Chapter Text
Heart held his trident firmly, it was supposed to show power and strength but in his feeble hands it was irresponsible and immature. It glowed a soft purple that reflected on the black voids floor like a pond reflecting moonlight. A heart was etched onto its handle, it had been there since the heart had first gained it. Now it sat by his side whilst he argued with mind. The mind held his logical mask very high, he pretended to be better than his counterpart because he could make sense of their world before them. From the very beginning mind told heart he wasn’t fit to rule, that his emotion would get the better of him.
“Stop playing with that as if it’s a children’s toy. You dont even know how to properly use it.”
The spikes of the trident slowly touched the floor and the void glowed purple around it as if to respond, It pooled underneath the surface like spilled paint.
”How would you know? You’ve never wielded the trident. You dont even have a weapon, at least soul has a pocket knife. All you have is your ‘logical’ words to protect you. They dont seem to be doing a great job at that.”
Heart waved the trident threateningly in front of minds head, he seemed to be struggling to hold its weight up on one arm.
”You dont have the courage to stab me with that, for the one with the trident you seem to be doing a lot more talking than me.”
“What if I dont want to? I never directly said I did.” The heart crossed his arms
Mind grinned, he knew heart wanted to.
“You do. You just are afraid of what soul would do, afraid of what you would do to yourself, afraid of what I would after I recover.”
Heart didn’t have anything to say, mind was spot on to exactly what he was worried about. He atleast had enough control over his emotions to not stab mind. Instead of arguing he just walked away, a pathetic ruler who couldn’t stand up for himself. He didn’t deserve to hold that trident and he didn’t deserve to act like it made him any better than him and soul, mind thought bitterly. Heart needs to be taught what a true ruler looks like. What someone who can actually control the half’s looks like in power. Mind thought of a plan to get heart’s trident, he had the logic but he missed one key detail. The trident matched the person who held it, including their emotions.
Heart walked into the house and entered his room. He sat the trident down and felt a wave of emotions hit him, without the trident to disperse his unwanted feelings he felt unbalanced and tears welled up in his eyes. He replayed what mind had said over and over. Surly he wasn’t that afraid of the others? He was the one in control. He’s the one who keeps their world balanced. He calmed his self and laid comfortable in his plain bed, he wondered what mind would do in retaliation to this small argument. Probably try catch his guard down or strike him when the trident wasn’t nearby. Heart sat up and proped his trident between his bed and the wall. Better have in on hand in case mind wants a fight.
He wondered what soul had been doing while him and mind argued. Usually soul would hide, like a small child, whenever him and mind fight. Soul would hopefully leave whatever dark crevice he was in soon. Mind was almost always the one to find soul when they wouldn’t come out, they seemed to sense where the others where in the house. Heart’s eyes felts heavy and his breathing slowed as he fell into sleep. Hopefully mind and soul would be ok for a few hours.
Mind paced around their small home, looking in cabinets and behind furniture.
“Soul?” He called out hopefully
The mind hadn’t seen soul for a little over 2 hours which was unusual. He only hid this long when him and heart’s fighting got really bad and nothing had happened, yet.
”You gotta come out soon. I uh have a monster for you?”
The mind heard the shifting of fabric from behind him and before he could turn around a scarred hand reached over his shoulder and snatched the monster out of minds grasp. Mind only smiled at this sudden appearance, he was glad soul was out.
“Where’ve you been, star? Ive been looking for you.”
The soul simply nodded, he didn’t talk much.
”I understand you have a monster but you probably need hydration, specifically water after going without for so long”
Heart woke from his sleep, a heavy feeling pulled down his chest
His eyes darted to every noise in their home. His hand held over his trident but there was nothing. Mind wasn’t coming for him yet he still strained his ears over every noise, he questioned and pondered each creak of the walls. The distant thump of his own heart in the back of his ears was almost too much to bear.
Then he heard laughter, coming from below him. It was soul and mind. Though simple reasoning would guess that the two were just laughing over a joke or something stupid the other did, heart had convinced himself they were laughing at him. They were laughing over the fact heart wouldn’t be able to protect himself from a coordinated attack from the two. They were laughing at how weak he is. Heart grabbed his trident and squished himself in the corner of his closet, behind the mound of blankets and pillows, into safety.
What soul and mind were actually doing is laughing at all the stupid hiding spots that failed miserably when soul tried to use them. Mind wasn’t getting a great deal of entertainment from their exchange but it was good for soul. Soul didn’t spend a lot of time with his other half’s and what little time they did spend was them failing to hide from one of the others. Not out of any wish to actually see them.
Soul also didn’t speak much, so hearing them laugh was reassuring.
“Soul?”
Soul looked up at the mind, their head tilted in question
“Where’d heart go? We were fighting earlier and they stormed off like a toddler”
Soul pointed at the stairs across the room. Mind stared up the stairs as if heart would suddenly walk out.
”Their probably fine” Mind carelessly said
Soul glared at mind, they wanted him to check in heart.
“Why would I check on that child? He’s probably throwing a tantrum right now. Better to leave him alone.”
Souls hands moved quickly.
Do it
”Fine, you owe me though.”
