Work Text:
Mondays is never a day that any student looks forwards to, the end of the weekend and having to go back to school for hours a day…But this Monday is special, cause its prom week. The week where all the prom proposals happen, and the school becomes decorated as much as possible to celebrate the school dance. Students walk down the halls Hexside High with excitement and glee in their voices as they talk about prom, showing their excitement for the dance that Saturday. Everyone’s excited to ask or be asked to the dance… except for one person, a green and brown-haired girl pacing in a secluded corner of the main hallway trying to give herself a pep talk.
“Okay…Okay…You can do this, you are a Blight. You are the top student and, this should be the easy…no problems whatsoever…Except for the fact that I’m an absolute disaster…and Luz is way too cute for anyone’s own good.” Amity could feel a blush come unto her face as she thought about Luz. Her beautiful tan skin, her curly hair, her eyes, her li…
Amity stops and covers her face with her hands and groans, feeling the blush getting even worse. “This is not the time to be thinking about that, and it never will be if I don’t do something soon.” Amity stops her thinking and takes a deep breath and calms herself, she just prays that someone else hasn’t already asked Luz out already.
Amity had asked Willow and Gus to not bring up anything to do with prom to Luz, just to make sure Luz didn’t start planning one of her crazy Luz ideas. The twins were also helping by giving her things to do and say, and they were going to help her with her dress and makeup when she (Hopefully) gets herself a date.
Luckily for her, she knew that she wouldn’t be rejected because Luz was straight, with how open and carefree Luz is with being bisexual. Luz goes as small as wearing a bi pin on her bag, to wearing clothes and face paint colored like the different types of pride flags every day for the entirety of pride month. She was an absolute dork, but Amity loved that dorkyness…and she’s sidetracked again.
Amity lightly tapped the sides of her head to get focused on the task at hand, asking Luz to go to prom with her. She started to get back into thinking about her plan until she suddenly heard the five-minute warning bell ring. Amity sighed, she’ll just have to keep thinking up her plan during any spare time she has throughout the day. She just hopes she gets the time prepare before running into Luz. She leaves the corner as she makes her way to her first hour class.
A few hours later
Luz never understood the point of big, overly flashy prom proposals. She always felt like they should be more of a quiet, personal, and special moment between two people, not something to show off like a trophy. The entire day she has been watching all kinds of different prom proposals, big elaborate signs, shouting out their confessions, serenading to the other person with a custom made love song, but the wildest one she saw was when some guy pretended to be hurt and get carried on a stretcher before saying the only cure was a date to prom…how they pulled that off she still had no idea.
As Luz was lost in thought, she wasn’t able to notice the head of aquamarine walking towards who also looked just as lost in thought until they both collided with each other. Luz felt the person run into her chest before they were knocked over, Luz staggers back and takes a second to regain her footing and what had just happened. She was taken out of her thoughts when she heard the person in front of her groan.
Luz panicked “Oh my gosh I am so sorry! Here let me help yo…” Luz’s words got stuck in her mouth as she looked down and immediately locked eyes with a pair of golden eyes staring back at her. Amity was on the ground rubbing her forehead after running into Luz’s chest, after both of them noticed who they ran into, both of them start blushing furiously and breaking eye contact and leaving each other in an awkward silence.
After what feels like forever, Luz breaks the silence “I’m sorry, here let me help you up.” She offers her hand towards Amity who continues to look at the ground to hide her blush before shyly nodding and taking Luz’s hand. The feeling of the others hand in theirs sends a shock a minor shock through both of them. Once Amity is on her feet, they resume their silence.
Luz didn’t know what to do or say, she felt bad for knocking Amity over, but she also was always carful around what she says and does around Amity. She doesn’t want to walk on egg shells around the other girl, but she also doesn’t want to push her or make her uncomfortable. Ever since she got to Hexside, Amity has always been the quiet type. According to Willow, Amity had always been the quiet and shy kind of girl, even when they were kids. Even when Amity hanged out with Boscha and the other bullies, she never joined in on the bullying, mostly just stood there and tried to get away from the situation.
Luz was happy when Amity stood up to Boscha and finally stopped hanging out with them, it let her be herself, a nerdy girl who enjoyed reading to kids at the library and loved reading The Good Witch Azura…
And was the girl who had stolen her heart. Luz knew she had a crush on Amity even before they became friends, ever though it definitely had grown even more when they did become friends. She always wondered if she should act on her feelings, maybe ask her out on a date, or prom. She knew she wouldn’t get rejected by Amity because she wasn’t into girls, ever since a month when her dad won custody of her and the twins, she started to wear a lesbian pride flag pin of the front of whatever outfit she was wearing that day. What stopped her from acting on her feelings was the fear of moving too fast, or making her uncomfortable, Luz noticed how red or awkward Amity became around Luz. She would stutter, or trip herself, or sometimes become fully silent and unable to talk to her. Luz didn’t want to make any of that worse or confess and have Amity not want to be friends anymore. So to Luz it was just better that they stayed friends and didn’t risk ruining anything with her feelings.
Besides…past crushes…never went well for her, they always ended in heartbreak in some way, being pranked, laughed at, or worse. Yeah…being friends sounds great.
Luz is taken out of her thoughts when she hears a whisper of a voice in front of her “So…” Luz looks at Amity and realizes that they have both been standing in the hallway for so long that the hallways were empty. Luz cringed on the inside at how awkward Amity looked, she quickly tried to think of something to say, her eyes flicked around quickly to see if there was anything to talk about. When she saw the prom banners and posters, she didn’t think much about what to say before quickly saying “So…do you have a date to prom?”
Upon hearing her question, Amity’s face immediately turned red all the way up to her ears and she quickly covered her face to hide her blush before attempting to stutter out “WHAT! I mean…no…but…umm…” Luz watched Amity’s reaction and immediately regretted asking and tried to come up with a way to fix this situation “I’m sorry! Its ok if you don’t! Or don’t want to tell me! I’m so so sorry, forget I said anything!”
Luz mentally slapped herself, panicking like that was only going to make this worst, she watched as Amity looked at her between her fingers shyly, she didn’t mean to make her uncomfortable…again “I’m sorry again, I’ll leave you alone…” As Luz tried to leave, she felt a soft hand grab her wrist, Luz tried her best to suppress the blush that was trying to cover her cheeks “Why does even feeling her hand near my hand do this to me?!”
Luz turns around and looks into the golden eyes of the girl in front of her as Amity took a deep breath before talking “It’s ok, I didn’t mean to freak out, it just surprised me. To answer your question no I don’t have date” On the inside, Luz could feel herself sigh in relief. Even if she won’t act on her feelings, it still made her heart feel lighter.
“Do…you have a date?” That question took Luz by surprise, she breaks eye contact with the other girl and looks down at the rest of Amity and takes notice how Amity’s arms are stuck to her side and tightly gripping her shirt. Luz felt bad that this situation was still making her uncomfortable, she almost wanted to switch topics to make Amity more comfortable, but if she didn’t answer her then it would be rude and make things worse.
“No, I don’t either, but I’ve seen plenty of proposals just walking through the hallway.” Luz noticed how Amity’s expression brightens when she says that and she sees her mouth turn into a small smile, and her hands unclench her shirt.
“That’s great! I mean…it’s not great…its bad…I’m sorry…I just…I’ve been talking for too long…” Amity went back to trying to hide the blush on her face by breaking eye contact and turning her head away. Luz’s eyes went wide, did she make her that uncomfortable? Why else would she stutter like that. Luz took herself out of her thoughts to respond before she makes Amity more uncomfortable with the silence “Yeah…Honestly I’m not to big into the whole big, over the top proposal…”
“How would you want to be asked?” Once again Luz is taken off guard with Amity’s question, she didn’t even think about being interrupted, she could only think about the question that she definitely was not expecting to hear from Amity. Amity still wasn’t looking at her, hiding her face from Luz, she also had crossed her arms and was tightly gripping her arms. She couldn’t help but admire just how beautiful she always looked, How pretty her eyes and hair are…and she’s being sidetracked “I really need to work on not getting lost in my head.”
Amity’s voice takes fully out of her thoughts “I’m sorry…you don’t have to answer, I know its very personal and sudden…” Luz quickly interrupts Amity, making herself sound as soft as possible to not accidently make her more uncomfortable “Hey, its ok, I promise. It just surprised me is all, don’t worry about it ok?” Amity makes eye contact with Luz from the corner of her eye and Luz can see a small smile before Amity nodded at her. Luz took a small breath in to ground and looked away from Amity so that she wouldn’t see her blush while she responds “Honestly, if I were to be asked to prom, I would want it to be something small and intimate. A quiet and special moment between me and the other person.” After Luz was done, she looked back at Amity and saw her staring intently, taking in every word she said. But now a new question came to Luz’s mind.
“If you don’t mine me asking, why did you want to know?” Now it had become Luz’s turn to catch Amity off guard as her concentration was broken and she seemed to be at a loss for words, she started looking anywhere but at Luz.
“Well…I…ummm” Amity suddenly looked up at a clock that was on the wall in the hallway “Oh wow would you look at the time! Lunch is ending soon, and I need to see a teacher before next class starts so GOODBYE!” Amity suddenly dashed past Luz and made her way down the hallway at speeds she had never seen her go before.
Luz stood there in shock at what just happened “What was that about?” Luz then heard the school bell ring, signifying that lunch was over and they had to start making her way to class. She looked down at the lunch she was holding in her hand still filled with food.
“Crap”
Luz started making her way to her next class with her head hanging low knowing she was going to have to find another time to eat her food. After a minute she got finally got to her class, she took her seat next to Willow and checked the time to see if she had time to eat something before class started. As she got her food out, she felt a tap on her shoulder, she looked over and noticed Willow looking at her with a worried expression on her face “Where were you? Me and Gus were worried Boscha and her cronies caught you.”
Luz smiled awkwardly back “Sorry Willow, I got caught up in the hallway talking with someone.” As soon as her words came out of her mouth, she watched as Willow gave her knowing look “Oh? And who would you be talking to in the hallway for that long?” She could feel the blush growing as Willow waited for an answer.
“It’s not what you think Willow…” Willows smile grows wider “So you were with Amity?” Luz sighed “Yes…” Willow laughed and patted Luz on the back.
“I knew it, its ok Luz, I understand wanting to spend lunch with my girlfriend…alone” Luz’s entire face exploded into the brightest shade of red Willow had ever seen that rivaled Amity’s blush “She’s not my girlfriend Willow, we are just friends.” Willow rolled her eyes and gave Luz her knowing smile “Sure Luz, keep telling yourself that.” Luz groans and looks away from Willow as her best friend laughs a bit before resuming what she was doing before Luz got there. Just as Luz was about to open her Lunch and eat something, the bell signifying that class had started rang, causing the girl to groan again before planting her forehead against the table.
Luz lifted her head as the teacher started class. After the teacher got done with instructing the class on the material they were learning, the teacher passes out an assignment that was to be done before class was over. Luz finished it quickly and decided to rest for a minute before finally eating her long overdue lunch. As she rested, she heard someone walking directly next to her and Willows table, the person bumped her arm slightly before she heard then quickly walk away. Luz opened her eyes to see a pink, folded note in front of her. She lifted her head to see who could have put it there, but she didn’t see anyone close enough to her. She commended them for how fast they could move. Luz redirected her attention to the note in front of her and opened it.
She saw some of the prettiest handwriting she had ever seen, focusing on what the handwriting said she could feel herself blush, but also become slightly confused “Meet me by the Prom Tree after school, I have something to tell you, please wait for me. Love, Your secret Admirer”
Luz felt her blush slowly spread more and more, but a question came into her head that she needed to know “Hey Willow?”
“Hmm?” Willow looked away from her phone as she gave Luz her attention.
“What and where is the Prom tree?” Willow gave her a puzzled look.
“It’s that large cherry tree behind the school past the football field, it’s also been called The Tree of Love. It’s been said that if you were to confess your feelings to someone under the tree during prom week that you would be together forever. It’s a very popular spot for people to confess there love there…Wait, why are you asking?”
Luz’s face became redder as Willow was talking, someone wanted to confess to HER!? Someone wanted to meet her at this “Tree of Love” this never has happened before! The only time something like this has happened was…Oh…right.
It’s happened when people would trick her into thinking they liked her, and then would laugh in her face, or post a video online to humiliate her…
Luz’s blush went away, and her excitement and smile went away with it. This had to be just a very cruel joke, right? No one has ever been sincere about this kind of thing. She suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder. Luz looked up and saw Willow looking at her with a worried expression “Hey, are you ok?”
Luz nodded “Yeah I’m ok…I was just curious.” Willow didn’t look convinced, she looked at Luz’s hand and saw the pink note in her hand. Her eyes widened when she realized what this could be about “Does it have to do with that note your holding?” Luz sadly looked down at said note and nodded.
“Did you see who put it here?” Luz looked at Willow, almost like she was begging for her to know. “No…I’m sorry Luz…Did the note tell you to go there?” Luz nodded again as she started sinking down into her seat as her mood worsened.
“Well…I think you should still go.” Luz’s eyes widened as she glanced in Willows direction, Willow had a very sincere look on her face, and she was lightly smiling at Luz.
“I know what you're thinking, and I understand why you would be hesitant or scared. But I have a feeling that it will be better this time.” Luz still didn’t look so sure. “How can you be so sure?”
“I’m not, I just have a very good feeling that you won’t regret going, but it’s still your choice if you do or not. And if you do go and it goes south, then I promise me, and Gus will have a sleep over with you and help you feel better.” Luz could feel how genuine Willow sounded, listening to her gave her a small piece of hope. She sat up in her chair and gave Willow a small smile “Thank you Willow, I’ll think about it, I promise.” Willow smiled back and nodded before going back to what she was doing.
Luz smiled back and thought back to what Willow said, she said she would think about it, but she felt like she already knew her answer without a second thought. She grinned even wider as she reached over to finally have her lunch, then the bell rang. The entire class could hear a loud groan over the bell.
A few Hours later
Luz could feel herself fidgeting as she made her way across the field on her way to the tree. If this was really real like Willow said, then what was she going to tell them? Would she go out with them, try to get to know them, even with her crush on Amity. No, she couldn’t do that, even if she never confesses to Amity, she couldn’t bring herself to like anyone else. Luz was coming to this tree to reject someone no matter who they were.
But as Luz gets closer to the tree, she can’t help but get more nervous, she’s never had to reject someone before, how do you even do it? The closer she got she could feel herself get more scared, by the time she was at the base of the tree, she wondered if she should have just gone home. She didn’t see anyone as she walked around the tree, did she get stood up? When they asked her to meet her here? Then she remembered that the note said to wait for them, so she would do just that. She sat down against the tree and waited.
After what felt like hours Luz felt like giving up and going home. But just as she started to stand up, she heard shuffling on the other side of the tree. Luz knew it had to be them, she took a deep breath before speaking “Hey…so listen, I really appreciate the note, and if you had wanted to ask me out. It means a lot to me, but…I already have feeling for someone else. Sorry that I made you come all the way out here, but I just can’t…” Luz didn’t know what else to say, but after a minute of silence she wondered if the other person had left “Hey, are you still ther…” She was cut off when she started to hear a girl crying from the other side of the tree.
Luz’s eyes widened, what had she done? She should have at least let them say hi or stood face to face before rejecting them. As much as she knew this was a outcome, she still could have handled it better, she had to try and make it right “I’m so sorry, I should have said that a bit better and at least let you talk before…that.” The crying didn’t seem to be getting any better, and she made the decision to go comfort the other person.
As she made her way around the tree, the first thing she saw of the mystery person was the fancy dress shoes and the pink and white dress that they were wearing, this caused a her stomach to tighten slightly, they got so dressed up for this. This only made her feel more guilty, as she continued to make the rest of the way around the tree she stopped when she heard the other girls very familiar voice “Please don’t come any closer, please. It would be better if you didn’t see me, so that you wouldn’t feel awkward around me. So please stay back and let me leave first…” Normally Luz would respect what they were saying, but she knew that voice, and she couldn’t let them leave.
Luz quickly rounded around to the other side of the tree before they could leave, and her assumption was correct. Because the person who had invited her out here was Amity.
“Amity!?” The other girl looked up at Luz with red and tear-stricken eyes, she could see her makeup running down her face from crying. The other girl was holding her knees up to her chest, she looked like she would break from the softest touch. Luz started to slowly approach Amity, the other girl tried to keep herself away from Luz, making herself smaller until there was nowhere else for her to go. She refused to even look at Luz.
Luz felt her heartbreak in half, she felt horrible about how she had handled this, she knew that she had to make this right. She lowered herself down to her knees as she moved closer to Amity, but keeping some distance so that she didn’t feel cornered. They sat there in silence, the only sound being the sniffles coming from Amity. Luz tried to think of what she was supposed to say, she knew she had to say something before Amity left. Then she remembered why she was here and knew what she wanted to say “Amity…” But before she could get another word out, Amity cut her off.
“It’s ok Luz…don’t feel bad, I knew this was something that could happen. I think I should go now…I’m sorry for wasting your time, don’t worry…I wont bring this up with anyone and…” Luz decided it was her turn to cut her off.
“Amity stop.” Amity’s head shot up and finally looked into Luz’s eyes, and staring back at her were the most gorgeous brown eyes that she had fallen in love with. The eyes that in that moment were holding the most heart-warming gaze she had ever seen from anyone. As she was admiring Luz’s eyes, Luz was doing the same, admiring how much Amity’s eyes always seem to shine with the most beautiful gold. The both of them could stare at each other for hours, but Luz knew she had to right her wrong.
“Amity, could you please…tell me what you were going to tell me?” Amity eyes widened.
“But…you already…” Amity felt a familiar soft feeling around her hands, she looked and saw Luz were grabbing both of Amity’s hands and were softly rubbing her thumbs over her knuckles. Amity looked back up into the pools of brown as Luz gave her a slight smile.
“Please, I really want to hear it.” Luz searched the golden eyes for any sort of discomfort, finding none. Amity held her gaze looking for any kind of trick or deceit, but only found genuine care. Amity closed her eyes and took a deep breath before looking back at Luz with confidence.
“Luz Noceda, ever since you came into my life…everything has become more and more crazy, and at first, I hated it. I wanted nothing to do with you, and I wanted you to leave me alone, all I wanted was to be alone. But after getting to know you, and after you tried so hard to be my friend. You helped me with rising against what others wanted of me, with your help I was able to leave Boscha’s friend group, let me get away from Odalia. Without you I would never have become the person I am today. I would never have been friends with Willow ever again without you.” Amity stopped to take a deep breath and checked to make sure Luz wanted her to keep going. Luz smiled at her and squeezed her hands in such a loving and gentle way, it gave her the confidence to continue.
“Honestly, I have so much to thank you for that I would be ranting forever. So, Luz Noceda, the light of my life and most beautiful girl I’ve ever meet.”
Amity takes a deep breath before basically shouting out “Would you do the honors of taking this madly in love girl to prom?” The silence that follows makes Amity realize what she just did, she quickly releases her hands from Luz’s grip and covers her face with her hands before she can see Luz’s reaction. After a second of silence, she starts to get worried, suddenly she starts to hear silent sniffles coming from the girl in front of her.
She quickly moves her hands away from her face and looks at Luz to see that the other girl had started to cry. Amity started to panic and start stuttering out apologizing, thinking that she had messed everything up. But Luz stopped her by regaining her hold on Amity’s hands and looking into Amity’s eyes with a smile on her face “Do you really mean it?” Amity wanted to hide her face but couldn’t because of the warm grip holding her hands. She felt her already red face get even redder as she nodded at the other girl.
What she didn’t expect was Luz cheering in glee before wrapping Amity in a hug and lifting both of them off the ground and spinning her around. Amity felt a bubbling feeling in her chest as she couldn’t help herself from joining the excitement of the amazing girl holding her. After what felt like an eternity, Luz started to slow down and put Amity down, but kept her hold on the goddess in front of her. Amity mover her head away from Luz’s chest as she looked up into her crush's eyes, the look in Luz’s eyes had an effect on her that she had never felt before “I really want to kiss her…” But Amity pushed those thoughts down, that can wait until another time. So instead, she wanted to spend as much time with Luz like this as she can “So is that a yes?”
Luz rolled her eyes before smiling back at Amity with the dorkyest grin she could muster with the blush on her face “Oh I don’t know Blight, what do you think?” Before Amity could answer Luz let go of Amity’s waist and grabbed onto her hands and dropped to her knees. Amity could feel the blush that was already on her face start burning into an inferno of a blush.
Luz looked back up and made sure they were looking into each other’s eye’s “Amity Blight, would you please take this blushing mess of a dork to prom?” Amity started giggling as she shouted “YES!” Luz stood back up and hugged Amity tightly.
After a minute of comfortable silence holding each other, Amity felt Luz pull away from the hug, but still they continued to hold hands to keep so contact with each other “It’s ok if you’d rather go home since it is getting late, but since we are going to be each other’s dates to prom. I wanted to see if you would want to practice?” Amity tilted her head to the side in confusion, this only made her look even cuter to Luz. And the way the sun framed the green haired girls form, it made her truly shine like a goddess “Amity, may I have this dance?”
Amity’s smile brightened as she nodded, they shifted their hands so that they right hands holding each other, while Luz’s left hand on Amity’s waist and Amity’s left hand went to Luz’s shoulder. They smiled at each other as they started to slowly dance together, they didn’t need any kind of music, they only needed each other.
And they kept dancing until the sun had dropped under the horizon, they wanted this moment to last forever. They finally were closer than ever, and there was nothing that could separate them. Even when they had to part ways that night, the thought of the other person brought such warmth to their hearts. This was only the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, and they were going to let every moment count. Now for the next chapter to start, and it started with the dance on Saturday, and they both couldn’t wait to take the next step.
