Chapter 1: Academy City

Chapter Text

Marrinette stood in the middle of the terminal bewildered by just about everything. Her ocean eyes twinkled in amazement, whilst her mouth hung slightly open. She could already tell that the technology was so far ahead compared to the rest of the world just by looking at the planes and other airports systems. She was as lost as an alien on foreign planet. Collecting her luggage, she finally navigated herself to the exit of the massive airport. A massive steel grey trashcan rolled by, pausing briefly to scan her face. An automated voice crackled to life. “Welcome to Academy City.”

Academy City was renowned for several things – an incredible number of students, technology light years ahead from the rest world and an abundance of state of the arc schools and universities – but this was nothing compared to its ace in the hole. Academy City had created people with superpowers - Espers. An Esper could develop a wide range of powers using their mind, electromagnetism, vector manipulation, telekinesis and several others. Anyone had the chance to enroll in the curriculum to develop their own powers, but few struggled to develop past level 4. The ranking system was split up into 5 levels. Level 1’s had just developed their abilities and were possibly years away from mastering it. Level 3’s were competent users able to pull of some impressive feats, there destructive power could be compared to that of a semi-automatic rifle. Deadly if used correctly, but still countered by modern technology. Level 5’s – Demi gods – were Academy City pride and joy. They held the power to raze buildings, shrug of armies and rival the power of nuclear warhead. There were only 7 Esper’s that qualified as level 5, a true testimony to the difficulty it was to obtain absolute power.

The sky had turned into amber glow as Marrinette hauled her hard toped pink suitcase up the several flights of stairs to her new student dorms. “You would think a city so far ahead would have phased out long flights of stairs.” Her body slumped as she realized her dorm was on the fifth floor, she was only on the first. Eventually after hauling her suitcase, she had reached the last step, she could’ve cried for joy. Beginning the final pull, her suitcase jerked upwards. This unexpected motion sent her flying backwards – only for her fall to be arrested by a set of gentle hands. Quickly turning around, she began to apologize “Merci- I -ahhh – I mean arigatou!” She stuttered. Japanese was still a new language to her, so she still defaulted to French by accident. With the adrenaline from her near embracement wearing off her brain was finally able to examine the image her eyes were relaying and oh boy. The young man looked around 18, his golden hair shimmering in the setting sun with his emerald green eyes teaming with kindness and a simple little smile she knew all too well. “A-a-ADRIEN!?”
