Disappointment. That is the first word that came to mind when Abagail thought about her only child, Brenda. Her daughter was a wild child with zero accountability in her life because mommy and daddy took care of her and bailed her out of the trouble that inevitable found her. Abby couldn’t even count all the times that Brenda had been arrested, it was such a frequent occurrence with John having to provide generous donations to clean up Brenda’s antics. John’s money was the only reason that Brenda didn’t have a record.
After receiving a call from the police station that notified Abby and John that Brenda was once again arrested, Abby decided that she couldn’t take it anymore. This was the final straw. She couldn’t sit ideally by and watch her daughter throw her life away. Abby decided that it was time that their reckless, irresponsible daughter learned some responsibility one way or another.
Abby thought back to her own wild streak and what caused her and John to turn their lives around 21years ago. Finding out that Abby was pregnant with Brenda gave the young couple structure in their lives, she and John went from irresponsible shits accountable to no one to parents responsible for another human being. They had to become responsible adults, especially Abby as she carried their baby and helped her grow in her belly.
Abby placed her hand on her flat empty stomach, wishing that she could have given her husband the large family that he had always wanted instead of just one delinquent child. It truly was a disappointment that Abby couldn’t have more children after Brenda especially since Brenda turned out to be such a failure.
Abby and John had only ever wanted what was best for Brenda. They wanted her to have everything in life that she could ever want, maybe they didn’t take into account what she needed. Abby now knew what Brenda needed. She needed structure in her life and Abby knew exactly how to give it to her.

Brenda’s parents sat her down at the family table. The atmosphere was tense. Brenda was waiting for her father to yell at her while her mother looked at her disappointedly. It was part of the song and dance that Brenda and her parents always engaged in. Brenda would do something stupid. Her father would bail her out and give a generous donation for the latest fundraiser the police was doing before sitting Brenda down and yelling at her. It was always the same. We have failed as parents. You are a disappointment! How could you do something so reckless?! You are a spoiled, irresponsible child. This is the last time that we are bailing you out. Instead, no one spoke, her mother just placed a paper in front of Brenda.
Brenda’s eyes opened wide in horror when she read the top of the paper: Harris Family Surrogacy Contract. What was going on?!
