Work Text:

“Dada! Dada, look!”

Jaeyun turns his head to look at Won who’s calling for him. His oldest son is gliding on ice and skating around faster than both his dads would like and doing all sorts of tricks Sunghoon teaches him despite them telling him not to (He really loves to spoil their children).

“That’s so cool baby! Please be careful, you don’t wanna hurt yourself on new year’s even now, do you?” Jaeyun says, smiling at the smug expression his son wears.

“I won’t Dada, promise!” He replies, and as much as Jaeyun likes to think his child knows better than to hurt himself, he’s still a 5 years old, so he’s glad his husband is on ice with them as well. Even if Heeseung is talking with Sunghooon, Jaeyun can see how his eyes never leave their son.

As the last day of the year came along Heeseung, Jake and their kids decided to spend it with Sunghoon and Jongseong as it is usually tradition for them. Only this year they decided to do something before their usual dinner together as well, and that’s how they came up with the idea of coming to the ice rink. Perks of Sunghoon being a teacher and having access to the facility when it's closed too.

So this is how they ended up as they are now: Sunghoon and Heeseung watching over an over-hyped Won and a low key scared Riki, while Jaeyun and Jongseong talk their way through both their partners having fun on ice.

“Riki is really trying his best, he looks like he’a a minute away from giving up.” Jongseong says from where he’s leaning against the railing beside Jaeyun, failing to hide his smile.

Jaeyun smiles as well, looking again over to where Riki is pushing himself up after falling yet again. His tiny white skates look incredibly big on his small feet but his son is really trying, end even though he’s usually not the type to give up (thing he learned from his older brother) Jaeyun saw him more perched on Heeseung’s hip than on ice during the last ten minutes.

“He’s a bold one, yes, but not as bold as his brother.” He replies as Won sprints in front of them once more.

Jaeyun is sure they’re both going to pass out as soon as they get home and he will gladly let them if that means they won’t fall asleep on their plates during dinner. But kids are always full of energy, especially their kids, so he’s not worrying the least bit about it.

Heeseung bends to pick up Riki from where he’s making grabby hands in front of him and Sunghoon pats his head telling him he’s done a good job. He hides his little head in the crook of his dad’s neck and that’s all they need to see to understand he’s done for the day.

“They make such a good picture.” Jongseong says, and Jaeyun looks at them with his usual warm eyes and fond smile. “They do. I‘ll never get tired of looking at them.” They are all Jaeyun needs to live and all he will ever want.

“The way I look at them is the same way you look at Hoon though.”

He playfully bumps his shoulder to Jongseong and nods his head to where Sunghoon is skating. The older blushes a little, the new redness mixing with the one already there because of the cold.

“I– yeah.”

“It’s been, How long now?” Jaeyun asks, trying his best to recall when his two best friends started dating but the older one beats him to it. “Four years.” He says, mouth still open as he’s not finished yet.

“But I– I think I want things to be different next year.”

Jaeyun frowns, confused. “How different?” He asks, and Jongseong is almost whispering his reply. “I want us to be more than boyfriends. I want him to be mine…”

Understanding downs on Jaeyun and he almost screams but is shushed by his friend and he’s quickly apologizing. More than boyfriends, he truly can't believe he’s talking about marriage.

“Jongseong that’s…beautiful.” Jaeyun says, warmth in his voice. “I knew this day would have come sooner or later!”

They both laugh as he proudly pats his friend’s back and they don’t register both the

kids and Heeseung and Sunghoon reaching them. “Having fun without us?” the youngest asks, faking a hurt expression when Jongseong immediately replies with a very much so.

Heeseung is still holding Riki in his arms when he stands in front of Jaeyun and leaves a kiss on his forehead. “He’s exhausted.” He says, stroking his back, and his husband only hums and does the same. Won is still sprinting in the rink and that leaves his parents asking themselves how a single kid can have such an endless energy boost.

“Won!” Jaeyun calls, and the little one turns to him right away. “Come on baby, it’s time to go.”

Won immediately pouts and it takes Sunghoon convincing him they’re coming back soon to get him off ice and out of his little hockey skates. “You promised, uncle Hoonie. We even did pinkies!” He says with his dazzling voice and wide eyes that remind Jaeyun so much of Heeseung. Said uncle only smiles at him and ruffles his hair until Won is laughing.

As for Riki, he doesn’t make it to their car. Once he’s dried and Jaeyun picks him up he’s fast asleep on his shoulder and naps for the whole car ride that brings them home.

“Will they even last until midnight?”

Heeseung is looking at his kids from the rearview on their way home, Won and Riki quietly napping in the backseat of the car. “If we let them sleep for a bit I’m sure they will.” Jaeyun says from where he’s sitting next to his husband.

“Nap for the kids it is then.” He replies. “Maybe we can even shower together before Hoon and Jongseong arrive for dinner, what do you say Mommy?”

The older squeezes Jaeyun’s thigh and even if he’s looking at the road the younger can see a grin on his lips. He clearly gets the innuendo and a blush doesn’t fail to spread on his cheeks, but he still playfully smacks the hand away.

“Oh, shut up.”

Either way, Jaeyun is smiling.

After arriving home and taking the kids in their room, Jaeyun eventually falls for Heeseung’s many attempts at seducing him and they take that shower he promised him. After all, getting to spend deserved alone time with your husband is all they both need after caring for their kids all day, just some time to relax and indulge in loving touches.

When the table is set and Jaeyun is almost done making dinner (with a clingy Heeseung attached to his back) the bell rings, a sign Sunghoon and Jongseong made it to their house.

“You wake up the kids and I get the door?”

Heeseung just nods before leaving a kiss to Jaeyun’s forehead and heading towards Won and Riki’s bedroom. The younger takes off his apron and opens the door to greet and accommodate the couple.

“I thought Sunoo would be here already.” Sunghoon says, looking around the house.

“He couldn’t make it, he said his family called him last minute and he couldn't say no.” Jayeun replies while taking their Jackets.

Sunoo, Jaeyun’s coworker, friend and babysitter was supposed to attend dinner as well but couldn’t make it due to family business and as much as the kids were sad to hear that there is nothing much they could have done. But after all, with him being their babysitter they’ll see him soon enough to forget about it.

“Uncle Hoonie!” Won screams as he runs to Sunghoon’s open arms. “Uncle Jengie!” This time it’s Riki, mirroring his brother but climbing up Jongseong’s arms instead, a plushie still in his hand.

“Hi little energy pills.”

“I’m starting to think they like them more than they like us.” Heeseung says as he gets close to Jaeyun and automatically wraps an arm around his back. Jaeyun just laughs and shakes his head as he looks at Riki climbing down Jongseong and standing in front of Heeseung, asking to be picked up.

He hides his little head in Heeseung’s neck and then whispers something Jaeyun almost doesn’t get. “Don’t worry Daddy, I like you more.” He says, and they’re both left laughing at their little boy who adores them so much.

Dinner goes by smoothly. They eat, laugh and share both resolutions and concerns they have for the year that is about to come. As he’s enjoying their presence, sitting at the table with his husband, his kids and his best friends, Jaeyun’s heart feels at ease. He feels like he’s living the life he’s always dreamt about, and he’s suddenly grateful for the amount of happiness these people fill him with.

After the dishes are done all that’s left is to wait for midnight to come. Time is spent between playing games with the kids and sipping wine while talking and it all feels special in a way that’s dear to all the people in the apartment.

When the time comes and merely two minutes are left before the end of the year, the first fireworks can be seen from outside their window and both Won and Riki are eager to see them so Jaeyun and Heeseung pick them up. Seoul is a big city, and seeing all those lights coloring the vast sky is always a sight.

Beside them, Jaeyun sees Sunghoon wrapping Jongseong in a back hug, both of them looking outside the big window as well. He smiles, and then the countdown starts.

Ten…nine…

Jaeyun hugs Riki closer to his chest and sticks to Heeseung’s side.

…five…four…

With the arm that’s not busy holding Won on his hip, Heeseung embraces Jaeyun so that they’re glued together, their kids in between them and his hand a comforting presence on his waist.

…two…one…

When midnight strikes they’re both smiling as they seal their lips together for a kiss. They’re each other’s new year’s kiss once again and they couldn’t ask for more. Their lips move sweetly and they separate quickly.

“Happy new year baby.” Heeseung says. “Happy new year dear.” The younger replies.

“And happy new year to you both!” Jaeyun adds, and then both him and Heeseung are tickling Won and Riki and painting their little cheeks in kisses. In front of them, the sky is lighting up with the countless fireworks filling it with colors.

“Sooo many kisses.” Riki says suddenly, and Jaeyun turns to see his two friends very much still making out. He only shakes his head resigned.

“Ew, too many.” Won says as he sticks his tongue out feigning disgust. He is truly adorable. “When are they getting married anyways?”

Jaeyun turns to Heeseung and finds him with the same wide eyes he himself has. Their five years old is truly incredible sometimes. They both shake their heads.

“Let’s hope soon enough.” Jaeyun says smiling, sharing that bit of something Jongseong told him earlier that day.

So that is how their year started, with them holding each other and both Jaeyun and Heeseung melting when their kids playfully thanked them for being “the best Daddy and Dada one more year!”.

And honestly, that’s what happiness tastes like.
