Work Text:

Light slivered through the blinds, landing conveniently right on Mondo’s eyes. Stubbornly, he kept them closed, determined to sleep, not wanting to give up the peace of the night. However, the sun had other plans, continuing to get brighter and brighter. Reluctantly, he moved, snuggling into what he thought would be another pillow, but oddly, it was warm, warmer than Mondo himself. It also wasn’t fabric texture, it almost felt like… skin?

Ohhhh shit. Taka.

He had completely forgotten that he had snuck his secret boyfriend over. One that definitely had not meant to spend the night. Still tired, he reluctantly opened his eyes, looking down on his lover’s face. He looked so peaceful, his brows not bunched together, leaving his forehead uncreased, and his jaw slightly agape, instead of clenched like it normally would have been. Through Mondo’s sleepy gaze, he almost seemed to have a heavenly glow. He stared at him for quite a while, never having seen him like this before, he could feel his heart flutter at every little snore that he made. He always made such an effort to be perfect, but in Mondo’s eyes, no matter what he did, he was perfect.

And then there was a clang.

Followed by a loud “FUCK!”

Goddamnit Daiya.

Taka’s eyes opened at the sound, before he quickly shot up, realizing that he was not in his own bed. He snapped his head at Mondo, confusion and fear in his eyes, “Mondo, what was that?” He asked, the blanket slowly slipping off of his chest, revealing the fact that he was shirtless. Mondo’s brain turned off, leaving him unable to move his jaw, just able to stare at Taka’s sculpted, muscular chest, again seeming to have a heavenly glow in the morning light.

“Mondo,” Taka’s voice snapped him out of his daze, and he directs his eyes from his chest to his face, which has changed an expression of slight annoyance and worry, “You will have time to quote ‘check me out’ later, but right now, we need to get me home,” he said directly.

It was at this point that Mondo had actually woken up, at least enough to form a coherent thought, “Right, uh, well it sounds like Daiya is awake, so it’ll be a bit of a challenge getting you to my bike so I can drive ya,” He looked around his room, trying to figure out the best way to sneak his boyfriend out. He didn’t think that Daiya would care that he had a boyfriend, what he would probably care about was the fact that he was dating the son of a leading policeman. Honestly, if you told Mondo that he was a year ago, he’d probably hit you, and if you told him he was dating Taka, he’d probably do worse.

He leaned over the bed, gathering up his and Taka’s clothes from the day before, passing the pristine white school uniform over to Taka before beginning to put on his own clothes. Taka hopped out from under the sheets, and began donning his wrinkled pants, taking great care with them as if they were brand new. Mondo, on the other hand, threw on his usual tank top before very haphazardly putting on his pants. By the time he was done, Taka had only just zipped up his pants, and was reaching down for his shirt. Mondo managed to sneak in a glance at his ass before a knock at his door made both of their hearts drop.

“Heyyy Mondoooo, you upppp?” A sing-song voice drifted passed the door, belonging to none other than Daiya.

Mondo put a finger to his mouth, silently telling Taka to stay quiet, “Yea, I just got up, the fuck do you want?” He said in a groggy voice. Taka cringed at the cursing, but it was a better reaction than he used to have.

“Aww, someone a widdle sweepy head?” Daiya teased, laughing as he did so.

“Fuck off,” Mondo said flatly.

“Oh fine, you're no fun,” Daiya huffed, “I’m making breakfast, come down when you aren’t such a grumpy pants,” His footsteps trailed down the hall.

Mondo and Taka exchanged glances, before loosening up their rigid stances. Well, at least Mondo did. Mondo let out a sigh, before making his way over to his still seemingly alarmed and worried boyfriend. He gingerly cupped his face with his palms, rubbing his cheeks with his thumbs, before leaning down and giving the other a kiss on the lips. Taka immediately leaned into it, closing his eyes and putting his hands on Mondo’s waist, letting out a tiny sigh as he did so. Mondo pulled away, “Sorry about him, heh,” He chuckled, keeping his hands on his cheeks, looking at his face. Mondo took note of how soft his face was. Despite how rough he was towards the majority of people, when him and Mondo were alone, he was soft, both emotionally and physically. It was as if Mondo just being there made him feel safe, relaxed. It was too bad that he only got to see that side of him every so often, but he always knew it was there, waiting for him. He moved his hands from his face to the back of his head and upper back, wrapping his arms around him into a hug. Taka reciprocated. They stayed like that for a few seconds, before Mondo pulled away, moving his hands once again towards his shoulders.

“Mkay, here’s the plan,” He began, looking into Taka’s eyes while he returned the gesture, “I’m gonna open my window, if it makes noise and Daiya notices, I’m just gonna say I’m warm, if not, that's fine. You can crawl out and hide by a bush near the driveway or behind the garage or something, just be careful, ya know?” He said with a chuckle.

Taka stood up straight and saluted, “Yes sir!” He said enthusiastically, but was careful to control his volume.

“Yeah, yeah, save that for later,” Mondo averted his gaze elsewhere as to try to avoid embarrassment.

“What?”

“J-just never mind,” Mondo stumbled through his words, before quickly making his way toward his window and lifting it. Luckily, it went without a hitch.

Taka made sure he had all his belongings before walking up to his boyfriend and the window. He swung his leg out of it, and not so gracefully managed to climb out. He stood up, wiped himself off from any dirt that might have gotten onto his uniform, and looked back at Mondo.

“Ok, now if I take awhile it’s probably Daiya trying to annoy me,” He started.

“Annoy you? Are you sure he isn’t just making conversation?” Taka asked.

“Well, yes, but he is a morning person and I am…” He looked down at his disheveled appearance, “Not. So he likes to kinda poke at me when we wake up,”

“Ah, seems brotherly, from what I have read about. Being an only child, it is hard to tell,” Taka pondered.

Mondo chuckled, “Yeah, I bet it is, babe. You want me to sneak you something?” He asked.

“Yes, if it isn’t too much trouble,” Taka said sheepishly.

“Of course it isn’t,”

The two smiled before Mondo reached his head over for a kiss, which Taka happily gave him one.

“Now, off ya go!” Mondo said. Taka gave a thumbs up, before running to find a hiding spot.

Mondo closed the window, again without a hitch, and grabbed his jacket, which was hanging on the back of his door. He shouldered it on, before going to the kitchen.

"Aww, good morning sleepy head!" Daiya said as he walked into the kitchen, "ohh, whatcha all dressed for? Ya got a date?" He said, wiggling his eyebrows.

Mondo's face dropped, a little blush dusted his cheeks, "Wha-? What the fuck's that supposed to mean?" He said, trying to hide his obvious expression.

"I'm just kidding man, I know you can't pull chicks," He loaded a plate with eggs and potatoes.

Hell yeah he couldn't. And he couldn't be happier.

"Alright, seriously though, why are you dressed?" He asked, his tone shifting, his voice becoming more gruff. He turned around, plate in one hand, fork in the other.

Mondo thought quickly, "I got some wood delivered to the uhh, wood… place,"

Daiya gave him a quizzical look, before he sat down with his heaping plate of food, "Y'alright, don't forgetcha wallet," he said lifting a forkful of eggs up to his mouth, "N eaf vefore you weave!" He finished, spewing egg bits onto his plate.

Mondo lightly loaded his plate, trying to figure out how to sneak some food outside for Taka. He scooped his potatoes carefully into his mouth. Normally, he wouldn't care, but he already looked so sloppy this morning, he would hate for Taka to see him worse. Daiya, on the other hand, ate like he hadn't eaten in days, which was normal. He always had a ravenous appetite in the morning, even when most nights he would have a midnight snack. Ketchup was smeared on his chin.

"Hey bro you got a-" Mondo started, but before he could finish Daiya looked up, and Mondo made a motion to wipe his chin.

"Ah shit, when we're out of napkins, too!" He huffed, "Eh, I'll just use the politics section of the paper, ha!" He laughed at his own joke, before getting out of his seat and heading for the door.

Oh shit.

Thoughts raced in Mondo's head. Some of the bushes out front were dense, sure, but others were see through, especially if you were wearing bright white. What would Daiya do if he saw Taka. Take him for a trespasser and attack him? What if he knew who he was? Would that change Taka's view on him? Should Mondo try to stop him if he saw him? But what would happen to him? Would Daiya kick him out? What if-

The door closed, and Daiya struggled to get the paper out of its plastic baggie. Mondo let out a sigh as he tossed it onto the counter, before plopping back into his seat. All was clear. After Daiya had freed the paper from its thin, plastic constraints, he ripped a small corner off and wiped his chin, and then made a beeline for the cartoons page. At this point, Mondo had finished his food, so he got up and went back to the counter, but instead of refilling his plate, he grabbed the baggie and started putting strips of bacon and slices of toast in it.

"Whatcha up to?" Daiya asked, chuckling.

"I don't wanna be late," Mondo said plainly, tying the end of the bag off.

"Ohhh, that's a first," Daiya teased, "I guess that fancy ass school is whippin ya into shape! Be careful, you don't wanna lose your whole personality," he winked, before looking back at his paper.

Mondo rolled his eyes, stuffing the bag in his pocket before heading towards the door, "Bye, I'll be back in a bit,"

"Byeeeee!" Daiya said with a laugh.

He left the house, grabbing his keys from his other pocket and speed-walked to his garage, checking to the side before going in. Lo and behold, there was Taka, his back pressed against the side of the garage. Mondo let out a sigh of relief.

“Oh, there you are!” Taka said surprised.

“Hey babe, sorry for the wait,” Mondo said, a slight smile pulling at his lips.

“It’s no trouble at all! Though, my father should get home from work in about half an hour, I recommend we start going right away!” He said, turning his whole body to face Mondo, his posture as perfect as ever.

That was fine. Sure, Taka’s house was about 25 minutes away, and Mondo didn’t really wanna cut it too close, but he was fine with a little speeding every once in a while. Thank god his dad had the night shift.

Fumbling with his keys, Mondo leaned down to open the garage, turning the lock with a satisfying *click*. He lifted up the slightly rusty door, and made his way in, grabbing his helmet as well and wiping the dust off. He handed it to Taka, since he always took safety more important than he ever could.

Taka gave him a stern look, “You should get a second one for yourself, since you want to take me everywhere on your motorcycle!” He piped up, “Plus, it’s always good to have an extra!”

“Yeah, you know I’ll get around to it,” Mondo said with a cheeky smile.

“You better!”

Mondo did his best to suppress a bit of a laugh as he swung his leg over the body of his bike, kicking up the kick stand as he did so. He scooted forward to make sure that Taka had plenty of room. Taka grumbled something about how helmets save lives as he reluctantly put it on and sat behind Mondo, pressing his chest into his back, his arms coiled tightly around the taller’s torso, and his head placed firmly between his shoulder blades. Mondo relished in this moment of being held for a few seconds, before starting up his engine and taking off, not bothering to close the garage door. Daiya can do it himself if he feels so inclined.

No matter how many times Mondo rode the streets at almost illegal to illegal speeds, it was always such a thrill. Feeling the wind in his hair, the rumbling of his engine, the sounds of other vehicles whisking away, it was amazing. Not to mention the adrenaline from maybe having to run from the cops!

He felt a grip tightening from behind him.

Maybe he should lean off the gas.

For as many years as Mondo had been biking, he hadn’t had a lot of passengers. It was because of this, when Mondo had offered to make Taka out on a date in the countryside - stargazing specifically - he was surprised as to how much he liked the feeling of being held by another person. It was only made better why the fact that the person holding him was his boyfriend. While of course it was incredibly convenient that since his dad worked a lot and thus wasn’t able to give him a lot of rides, and the fact that Taka did not have a driver's license, that Mondo would have to drive him around quite a bit. And he loved every second of it. He had no clue that biking could be made better, but here they were!

The two of them pulled up to Taka’s house, but Mondo drove just a bit down the block, just in case someone saw them. Mondo and Taka’s houses were somewhat similar, but at the same time quite different. They were both a strange shade of sandy brown with dark brown tiling, but Taka’s house had two floors, while Mondo’s only had one. Both of their houses had very poorly taken care of yards, with grass that was just a bit too tall. There was no car in Taka’s driveway, a good sign.

Mondo parked his bike before hopping off, Taka quickly following suit. Mondo reached over to lift off the shorter’s helmet, slipping it off easily. Taka’s hair was ruffled underneath, and it took extreme amounts of willpower to resist ruffling it more and kissing his forehead, but Mondo pulled through. He sat the helmet on the seat, figuring that he wouldn't be gone for very long.

“Mkay, I’m gonna walk you to your door, yeah?” He said, looking at Taka’s face, a grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.

“Alright!” Taka said happily, turning around to start the small trek. Mondo’s heart strings pulled. He wanted more than anything to hold his boyfriend’s hand in public, maybe even kiss him. But with both of their reputations… it was a dream just too far out of reach. He took stride next to his lover, walking along the sidewalk to Taka’s house.

“Oh, right, I forgot about this,” he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the now cold breakfast, “Sorry it isn’t a whole lot, Daiya didn’t make a whole lotta-“ his words were cut short by Taka grabbing the bag and digging straight into the toast. Mondo giggled, thinking it was cute, but also a little worried at how hungry he seemed to be.

Taka continued to munch on the toast and bacon as they made their way up the walkway to the front door. As they approached it, Taka fumbled for his key, the last piece of bacon dangling from his mouth. As he pulled out the shiny piece of metal, he gobbled down the remaining bite. Mondo watched as he unlocked his door. Taking a quick look around to see if there were any people that could see them, he concluded that there were none. His heart fluttered.

Taka swung the door open and gave a last look at Mondo, “Last night was really fun,” he said, a slight blush building at his cheeks.

“Yeah, I agree. Wanna do it again sometime?” Mondo winked.

“Haha, yeah! Perhaps with a little planning beforehand, however,” He said back.

The two looked at each other for a moment, love in their eyes, before Mondo made his daring move, and planted a firm kiss on his boyfriend’s forehead. Taka smiled a very toothy smile at this, and wrapped his boyfriend in a very tight hug, and Mondo hugged back, squeezing harder than the other.

He leaned down to Taka’s ear, “Hey,” He started, Taka humming in response.

“I love you.”

Taka buried his face in Mondo’s shoulder, blush creeping strong and red on his cheeks and the tips of his ears. The two of them hugged each other tighter still.

“I love you, too.”

It took a very long time for the pair to pry each other apart from the other, but when Taka remembered the imminent arrival of his father, they both knew that Mondo could not stay for long. As Mondo started to go down the walkway and make his way to his bike once more, Taka yelled down:

“Remember to wear your helmet! I don’t want you to get hurt!”

“Fine, Moooom!” Mondo said back sarcastically, but deep down he was appreciative of Taka saying that. He hadn’t had someone care about him, the true him, like that before.

And for the first time in a long time, Mondo Owada, did wear his helmet while riding his bike.
