Chapter Text
You cling to Steve as he drives you home to your shared apartment on his motor cycle.
He parks with a sigh. A sigh that doesn’t go unnoticed by you.
He had picked you up right after going to visit Peggy, you knew that was always hard on him. He loved you, you knew that. But she would always be his first love, you couldn’t compete with that. You didn’t want to, he was your husband after all, Peggy was only ever a crush.
You walked up the steps to your shared apartment hand in hand. When you got to the hallway your neighbor was locking up her door with a basket of laundry in her arms.
You smiled brightly, “Hello, Kate.” You said sweetly
“Y/n, Steve, hi!” She said with a smile, “sorry I’d love to chat more but I have laundry.”
You nudged Steve’s shoulder, reminding him of what you talked about earlier that morning.
He looked over at you confused and you raised your brows at him, “Oh.” He said turning back to Kate, “Hey, if you want. If you want, you’re welcome to use our machine. Might be cheaper than the one in the basement.”
“Oh, yeah? What’s it cost?” She asked jokingly
Steve turned to you and smiled
“A cup of coffee?” You said sweetly
She smiled with a a sigh, “Thank you both, but I already have a load downstairs, and you really don’t want my scrubs in your machine. I just finished a rotation in the infectious disease ward, so…” She said as her cheeks reddened with embarrassment
You and Steve both chuckled, “Well, we’ll keep our distance.” He said sweetly.
Kate turned the other way and started walking off and you and Steve did as well.
But then she stopped and turned around. “Oh, and I think you left your stereo on.” She said sweetly
You froze, you distinctly remember turning it off before you left for work this morning. Your eyes widened as you looked at Steve. Pure shock on your face. He gave you a side glance as if to say ‘don’t say a word.’ And you didn’t.
”Oh,” he said turning to face the door and then back to Kate, “Right. Thank you.”
She nodded and continued walking.
Steve waited till she had left completely before turning to you, “Get behind me and have your gun ready.” He whisperer cautiously.
You did as you were told. Following behind Steve with you gun drawn as you went around back and climbed through the window. He quickly grabbed his shield that was leaning against the shelf and you followed close behind him. When you both carefully turned the corner you saw a man sitting in the shadows in one of your arm chairs. He looked up into the light of the window, it was Nick Fury.
Steve sighed with relief. And lowered his sheiks, still keeping it in his grasp.
”Jesus, Furry,” you said lowering your gun, “I could have killed you. The hell were you thinking?”
”I don’t remember giving you a key.” Steve said with an annoyed tone
Nick grunted as he sat up, “You really think I’d need one?” He said sarcastically, “My wife kicked me out.”
You looked from Nick to Steve with a confused face, to your knowledge he wasn’t married.
You saw Steve’s eyebrows crinkle, “Didn’t know you were married.”
Nick merely shrugged, “A lot of things you don’t know about me.”
”I know Nick.” Steve said stepping away from the wall, “That’s the problem.” He said flipping the light switch
When the lights came on you gasped, Nick was bloody and bruised.
Steve’s eyes widened in response.
Nick raised his hand as of to say ‘hold on’ as he turned the lamp off next to him and began typing on his phone. You and Steve waited for what he was going to say.
He held up his phone to you both with a message reading: EARS EVERYWHERE
You apartment had been bugged.
“I’m sorry to have to do this but I had no place else to crash.”
He held up another message that read:SHEILD COMPROMISED
Steve looked to you and then back to Fury with a concerned face.
”Who else knows about your wife?” He asked
“Just,” he said holding up yet another message reading YOU AND I, “My friends.” He said as he stood up.
You glares at Fury, “Is that what we are?”
Steve gripped your waist warningly.
“That’s up to you.” Nick said bluntly
Before you or Steve had the chance to say anything a bullet broke through your window and ripped through Nick’s chest.
You gasped as three more bullets followed and Nick fell to the floor with a groan.
“Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.” You whispered in a terrified voice as you helped Steve drag Nick out of range.
You watched in horror as Nick handed something to Steve and whispered something before passing out.
it went dead silent before there were out dings at the door, “Fucking Christ!” You scream in terror.
”Captain and Mrs. Rogers?” You heard a familiar voice.
Kate.
She rushed in cautiously with a gun drawn, “I’m agent 13 of S.H.I.E.L.D Special Service.”
”Kate?” He said in shock
”I’m assigned to protect you.”
you looked up in shock.
”On whose order?” He said angrily
Kate looked down at Nick’s body, “His.”
She bent down to check his pulse before pulling a walkee-talkee out of her pocket, “Foxtrot is down, he’s unresponsive. I need EMTs.”
”Do we have a 20 on the shooter?” Someone said through the walkee
Steve looked out the window,” Tell them I’m in pursuit.”
”Steve, don’t.” You said trying to grab his hand
But before you could reach he he sprinted towards the window. He broke through it with a jump and started chasing after the shooter.
”Dammit!” You yelled before grabbing your gun and jumping out the window barely landing on the foot of the building across the street.
You sprinted to catch up to Steve and the mystery shooter, before you could even realize that Steve was on the floor below you he jumped through another window and landed right next to you. You continued running with Steve right behind you. You were hot on the shooters heels. Steve hurled his shield at the man who caught it with ease as you got a glimpse of his half masked face. His eyes had dark makeup around them and he had a metal arm with a red star on the shoulder, with long brown hair. The masked stranger hurled the shield back at Steve, who caught it but was pushed back slightly. When you both looked up he was gonna again.
“Where the fuck?” You said breathlessly
Steve walked up to you and grabbed your chin making you look up at him as he examined your body for bullet wounds or bruises.
You gently pushed his hands away, “I’m fine, Steve.”
As you and Steve stood looking through the giant glass window as they operated on Nick, Natasha stormed through the doors and stood next to Steve.
”Is he going to make it?” She asked almost breathlessly
“I don’t know.” Steve said still staring at Nick
”Tell me about the shooter.” She said blankly
“He’s fast.” Steve replied
”Strong.” You said gripping Steve’s hand
”Had a metal arm.” He said as he looked to Nat hoping that would mean something to her.
Nag didn’t say anything, “Ballistics?” She asked one of the shield leaders
”Three slugs, no rifling. Completely untraceable.” She replied.
“Soviet- made.” You said softly
“Yeah.” The shield leader responded.
You gripped Steve’s hand harder as you heard Nick’s pulse reader flatline.
”Don’t do this to me, Nick.” Nat said softly tears filling her eyes.
Three. Two. One. Clear. Time of Death 1:03 a.m.
You walked out, Steve was quick to follow. You leaned against the wall as tears streamed down you face.
“Baby.” Steve said softly
You looked up with tears falling from your eyes, his arms were spread out to you. You ran into them quickly as he held you tightly, sobs racking through your body.
Natasha stormed out and stared at the two of you, “Why was Fury in your apartment?” She said in almost an an accusing voice.
Steve sighed and gripped you tighter as he felt you tense up, “I don’t know.”
”Captain, Y/n,” a soldier said walking up to the three of you, “they want you both back at SHIELD.”
“Give us a second.” You said softly
”They want you now.” The soldier said
“Okay.” Steve said in an annoyed tone as he tuned back to Nat
“You’re a terrible liar.” She said before walking away
Before you both left Steve left the device he had been given by Fury in the vending machine hidden behind some candy. Then you both followed the soldiers back to SHIELD.
