Chapter Text
It was creeping up on one in the morning, Steve needed to complete the modules for this particular class to further his progress on his MFA, once he completed this semester he only had one more left. He felt like he had just finished grading papers for his middle school students.
Lazily he pushed his fingers underneath his glasses and rubbed gently, his eyes were dry from the strain of looking at the screen.
There weren’t enough hours in the day. His apartment was cloyingly quiet. Even in the bustling metropolitan area that Evanston was.
Sprawled along the shore line of Lake Michigan, tucked between Chicago and the fancier North West lake front suburbs of Illinois. People thought his parents were rich where he grew up- but the mansions along Sheridan road dwarfed the kind of wealth he was raised in.
He turned on the white noise machine, thinking the static might help his brain.
Spoiler alert: it didn’t.
At least it was Friday, he had all weekend to complete his own assignments. He needed coffee. He needed sleep.
Because tomorrow he had plans with Robin to decorate her apartment for Christmas, she was one of those, as in someone who needed decorations up the moment Thanksgiving passed.
He had already put it off for a week.
Getting back to a shortened work week with kids sugar hungover from the mini Thanksgiving break and hyped up about the upcoming longer holiday break was a feat in and of itself. There was no focus just excitement and excess energy.
He had taught the same age group in Indianapolis after college, met someone a year into teaching, she was sweet and whip smart. They had dated three years, the last two of those they lived together while she was also dating someone else.
Unbeknownst to Steve.
Who was invested in work, and spent too much time going to visit Robin in Chicago. The cheating accusations were often flung his way- even at his insistence that Robin would never be interested in him, due to the glaring fact she was a lesbian.
The pieces started to fall into place when his girlfriend came home later and later, her phone would pop up with ‘you up?’ messages as Steve’s insomniac self would see the screen. The icing on the cake was the men’s ties that weren’t any Steve owned showing up in their hamper when he was doing laundry.
The loss hadn’t been devastating as much as he felt like an idiot for not connecting the dots sooner.
Foolish.
He moved out, finished up the school year and applied to multiple middle schools in the Chicagoland area, wanting a change of scenery.
As well as applying to grad school programs.
He wanted growth, and change, and to pour himself into things he cared about. He tried to remind himself of that as he struggled through these final semesters of the program.
It felt like the longest stretch to get between this part of the school year and over the hump of holidays. Robin was blowing up his phone for friendship time, which was code for Christmas decorations time.
One such decoration was a real tree. Which Steve would be helping procure, chop down, wrestle up a flight of stairs, and put up in her 1100 square feet of living space.
They’d be driving over the northern border of Illinois into Wisconsin listening to Christmas carols and sipping hot cocoa tomorrow afternoon.
He needed to get some leeway on his class work. So then he could enjoy tomorrow and maybe smoke a nice bowl of good weed with Robin as they strung up all of her eight thousand lights.
Wait- Robin raved about a 24 hour café not too far from Steve’s place. It was the up side of living in a college town, there were often late night spots scattered around the Downtown Evanston area to cater to the North Western student body.
Steve perched his glasses atop his disheveled hair and pulled out his phone searching for the place.
‘24hr café near me’
Thank fuck for the internet.
Those About to Rock café was three blocks from his place, he must’ve walked past a hundred times in his first year here. He scrubbed a hand over his just starting to show stubble, grabbed his lap top, threw on his coat, and headed out the door.
For caffeine and a change of scenery.
It might help him refocus.
Here’s to hoping he thought as he locked up his apartment and creaked down the two flights of stairs.
***
Eddie often worked overnights at his café, big comfy brown leather sofas, heavy wooden communal tables, and walls lined with shelves and imposing bookcases filled with books and abandoned games.
It was like if a dusky library, retro café, and small venue got together to have a mismatched baby that was Those About to Rock vibes. Inviting, a haven for weary students, early morning business folks, and insomniacs alike.
He hosted live music the last Saturday of the month, and open mic nights scattered through out the year. Gareth insisted on testing out his stand up routines here before he booked bigger venues in the city.
His sleep schedule was always strange so the overnights didn’t bother him- he also wouldn’t ask his employees to do them if he himself refused to. Fair was fair. He liked to think he was a pretty fair boss.
Max came in from the early December crisp night, curtain of low back length red hair fanning behind her and air pods in place as she shot him a grimace and a quick middle finger before heading to the back to clock in.
Eddie clutched his heart and over- acted fainting, pulling a snort from one of his favorite minions.
“What’s up Red?” He asked as she came out on the floor, apron under her arm.
“Sorry, forgot me and Dusty switched, midterms are a bitch.” She rolled her eyes as the over head bell rang signifying a customer.
The two of them looked over to the doorway.
Eddie’s eyes widened fractionally, the man had wire rimmed glasses, a square jaw, and bronzed hair testing the limitations of gravity.
Oh, new meat, he hadn’t ever seen this late night customer. Eddie was good with faces, and this was a pretty face.
Eddie had also been at the shop for almost twelve hours at this point and smelled like stale milk, espresso, and B.O., He shot Max a pleading look, that she caved and gave him pity over.
She huffed at him and shooed him to the back slipping her apron on over her head and gathering her hair in a sloppy ponytail as the man approached.
He cleared his throat and wiped the fog from his lenses, “You guys are 24 hours right? I didn’t just like…sleepwalk my way into a café?” He asked quietly.
A small laugh could be heard from the back room.
Steve turned towards the sound as the barista spoke up, “Yeah, yeah we’re 24 hours my zombie amigo, what can I get you?”
The name tag on her apron read ‘Mad Max’, Steve liked her already, the undercurrent of winning her approval buzzed under his skin, like with the tough kiddos in his class he used a gentle voice, “Could I get a medium quad oatmilk latte?”
“Damn that’s a commitment four-eyes, didn’t wanna sleep in the next day then?” She grumbled under her breath as she rang him up.
Steve chuckled, “Technically it is the next day and I’ve gotta get some classwork done.”
She looked at the clock knowing her shift had barely begun, proof in front of her it was half past one in the morning.
She took his payment, washed her hands, and fired up the espresso bar, “Student at North Western?” She mused.
She used to hate the small talk aspect of the job, still did most days, but quiet overnights felt weirder to not try to make a connection, however small. Especially when the café was deadass empty.
He shook his head, “Doing an online program for my MFA.”
“Oh, masters degree? Shit I’m crawling against the current to my undergrad, it’s an absolute bitch.” She said as she steamed the oatmilk, and poured it over the shots in a cutesy cat motif ceramic mug.
He gave her an easy smile and raised his mug, “Cheers Mad Max here’s to higher education, and what a fucking nuisance it can be.”
She laughed lightly, Steve felt like he had accomplished something with her, even if it was a pity laugh.
He set up in the corner and focused on the discussion boards he needed to comment on for participation points.
Max popped her head in back, “Eddie the banished what the fuck was that about?” She asked raising one angled eyebrow.
Eddie made a prolonged uhhh noise and then, “Um, he was kinda cute?”
“Shit, if dorky is cute to you. I know it’s been about a year since you are Rick broke up, but dude was a total wastoid- why don’t you come mingle.” She teased and tossed a pen at him.
He held his cell phone to his ear, “Excuse me H.R. I am being physically assaulted by my employee…” He eyed her while he did his well worn bit, brushing off the comment of his failed five year relationship.
He was 33 now and liked to pretend the experience made him wiser, on his worse nights he thought of all the time he lost and ways he made himself smaller for Rick. Good riddance and all that.
“He’s in a grad school program, chances are he’s closer in age to your ancient ass, and not like the NW freshies who come in to flirt with your bad boy aesthetic bullshit.” She snapped her gum and made to head back out to the café.
“Bad boy aesthetic? I’ll have you know I’m hardcore metal through and through Maxine.” He called after her.
“Maxine me again and I’ll walk out!” She threw back at him.
Eddie twirled the offensive pen between his fingers in a rhythmic pattern, the guy had looked young. Maybe Eddie was pleasantly wrong? He did strategically retreat in back the moment he clocked the guy as cute.
Steve overheard the last part of the back and fourth it tugged a smile from the corner of his lips, it reminded him of his own relationship with Robin, especially in their customer service days. In the trenches together against the customers.
The man in the back made his way out when a petite pixie cut wielding red head made her way in around 5am to relieve him of his shift.
Steve’s eyes trailed the tall, long haired man- flannel peeking out from his leather coat, black jeans and clunky Doc Martens on his feet, before snapping back to his screen as the man locked eyes with him and gave a quick finger wave and dimpled grin on his way out.
Yeah, Steve may have found his new regular spot.
He couldn’t believe almost four hours had passed, he was picking Robs up around eleven so he had some solid time to try and sleep after completing nearly everything he needed to.
He packed up his lap top and brought the long forgotten empty mug back up to the counter, both red heads paused their conversation and turned to look at him.
“I completely forgot you were in here.” Mad Max said to him.
Steve shrugged lightly, he had a way of blending in with the furniture a superpower from childhood when he wanted to make himself scarce if his parents were home, “Maybe I’m more of a ghost than a zombie?” He joked.
She let out a barking laugh, the other woman smiled, “You a regular?” She asked.
Steve shook his head, “First time in actually.”
“Ahh I see, I’m mainly mornings so I’m never sure about our late night regs- some get super offended when I don’t know them or their order, like I’m supposed to keep tabs on that kinda thing.” She lifted one perfectly manicured eyebrow his way.
“This is the first place that’s helped me power through a quarter of my semesters’ workload so I’m sure I’ll be around.” Steve said as he zipped up his coat and adjusted his glasses.
“Welcome- what’s you name?” Max finally asked realizing they’d most likely cross paths again.
“Steve.” He responded, tiredness cloaking his body almost all at once.
“See ya around Steve, maybe get some sleep?” She teased.
He let out a long exhale, “That’s the plan.”
He made his way back to his laptop and tipped his head towards the red heads as he made his way out of the café and into the still mostly sleeping town.

Dingus, made us a thermos of hot cocoa with almond milk! I am reeeeadyyy!
Cool your jets Rob on my way 2 u now.
I have Santa hats for us to wear!
Absolutely not.
Don’t be a Grinch Stevie!
Steve huffed and turned the key in the ignition, his previously owned Subaru coming to life as he made his way to Robin.
They lived fairly close to each other on a nice day it was 10 to 15 minutes walking distance, Steve’s apartment was above a yoga studio, and Robin’s was closer to the bustling main strip of Evanston off Davis street.
Steve put his hazards on as he stopped in front of Robin’s building, texting to alert her of his arrival.
Moments later his best friend was bounding out the entry way bundled in her mid-thigh length puffy winter coat, jingling Santa hat complete with bells, hands filled with said thermos, and what looked like some type of pastry.
“Baby boooy, you ready to get your holiday cheer on?” She asked all slate blue eyes and stark freckles dancing over the bridge of her nose.
“You’re lucky I love you Robs.” Steve grumbled as she tugged a matching hat over his hair and handed him a cinnamon streusel muffin.
“I even baked for us baby cakes, I researched tree farms in the area and this one is family owned for generations and uses ethical practices.” She synced her Spotify list and let soft holiday music begin to play.
Steve set up the GPS on his phone, turned off his hazards and headed to Wisconsin.
“You okay? You look a little sleep deprived.” Robin stated as they got onto the expressway.
“Finally tried that café you rave about to get some of my classwork done.” Steve said as they drove.
“What’d you think? I could get lost looking through those bookshelves, usually when I stop in before work there’s this one employee with a red pixie cut-“ Robin was cut off by Steve.
“-She came in when I was leaving!” Steve said.
“…What time were you leaving?” Robin asked disgust apparent on her face.
Steve shrunk down in his seat, “Uh, just about five I guess.”
“Ah-Ha! Sleep deprived, see!” She snapped back at him as he smoothly changed lanes.
“So, this pixie cut employee?” He asked.
“Nothing to say really.” Robin got quiet.
“Huh? Really, thought you brought her up, Robs.” Steve teased.
“I mean she’s cute, obviously, and she had a Smiths pin on her apron by her name tag. So good music taste.” Robin downplayed her interest.
“There’s a metalhead guy who works there too, made the best cappuccino I’ve ever had it my life.” She added.
“And you stop in every morning?” Steve continued.
“Um, just my in office counseling days at the university.” Robin said with a non-committal air.
“Okay, so that’s just Monday through Thursday?” Steve glanced over at her as she jingled her Santa hat in tune with the current song.
“Did you see the guy though Stevie? He’s half the reason I told you to go, you have a type.” She added.
“I wont confirm or deny seeing him.” Steve said tight lipped and cheeks warming at remembering the flash of dimples as the man left.
Robin gloated she loved being right. She grinned at him and turned the music up, singing along to avoid furthering the conversation.
Steve shook his head and against his own volition began humming along to the tune as well. Letting the conversation be forgotten as they made their way to a more and more rural scenery. Further away from the comfort of the city and suburbs inbetween.
***
Robin’s apartment had all the old Chicago style charm that Evanston was steeped in. Adorable wall cutouts for her Christmas tchotchkes, arched doorways and her front room with the bay window overlooking the street was the perfect showcase for the tree they had lugged back from Wisconsin.
Steve and Robin wrestled the tree up the apartment stairs and into her unit with more coordination and ease than Steve thought would be possible where Robin was involved.
“Okay I already have the tree stand where I want the tree to go and I took my decorations out from storage last week so let’s get this baby on display!” Robin said excitedly.
Steve appreciated her enthusiasm even as the soft pines poked through the sleeve of his knit sweater.
He grunted as he held it in place and Robin twisted the stand to hold the trunk securely, “How’s it look?” He asked as she stood up and stepped back to take it in.
“Like a showstopper!” She said clapping her hands as Steve gingerly let go of the tree and joined her to look.
It was a squat and well balanced tree that would make the best backdrop for all her lights and whimsical ornaments.
She clapped a hand on Steve’s shoulder and ran off to grab something, she walked back in the room, cracking the window and packing her blown glass bowl, “I think we’ve earned this.” She smiled at him and offered the paraphernalia for him to have the inaugural toke to commence their holiday decorating.
Steve grinned at her, Robin always had a way of knowing just what they needed.
Steve grabbed the lighter from her side table and flicked it to life, hovering the flame over the ground up deep green flower, he held his thumb over the carb as he lit the bowl.
Taking a deep first toke and letting the burn fill up his lungs he held it and passed the pipe to Rob letting her take a hit before he exhaled.
He let the feeling wash over him in a slow wave as he knelt in front of one of her storage bins and began unpacking the strands of lights, the soft multicolor kind that had a vintage feel to them.
Robin coughed lightly with her own exhale and passed the bowl back to Steve repeating the process a few more times before setting it aside.
Her pupils blown and smile hazy as she got up to grab cookies from her kitchen, “My co-worker baked these, chocolate and salted caramel chip cookies.”
Steve took a bite of one, flavors dancing over his taste buds and mmm- ed loudly.
“I know, right?” Robin said with her mouth full.
The two got up and started stringing the lights onto the wide tree.
“How’s your course work coming along with the end of the semester coming up?” Robin asked.
Steve gave pause for a moment, “Honestly this one has been tough, I want to prove to myself that I can hold onto a 3.8 or above GPA for this entire program but this semester has been hard with time management.”
He felt the affects of the weed cradle his brain, a calmness, and an attention to every shiny thing they were putting on the branches.
“Stevie, not to be a sap but I’m so proud of you.” Robin said eyes soft as she caught his gaze.
Steve tried to accept the compliment but felt it settle weird between his ribs. He felt like he was on a mission to prove something to everyone- or more specifically his parents who thought he’d amount to nothing more than taking the privileges handed to him by his well connected lineage.
Next semester would be the last of his MFA a focus on culturally diverse pedagogy that he already was using what he had learned so far to apply it to his middle school English teacher position.
The school and district he taught in had an incredibly varied pool of students that Steve wanted to make sure every single one of them that passed through his class felt seen and included.
“Earth to Stevie, did I lose ya?” Rob shook him from his thoughts.
Steve grinned, “Lost in thought Robs, but yeah this has been a tough semester tried the café to help myself focus and I got a good amount done. I still have one more essay to complete and an assigned reading but I think I’ll try to get it done this week so once holiday break comes up I can actually enjoy it.”
They unwrapped some of her more fragile ornaments and placed them evenly spaced on the tree.
Late afternoon already giving way to a night time darkness as they ordered food and put up the stockings and garland.
The Indian cuisine was a quick delivery and Robin grabbed plates and silverware and climbed on the couch next to Steve, food spread out on the coffee table in front of them.
“Thanks for your help today.” Robin said as she scrolled on Hulu.
“It looks great, I know I put up a stink about it but your apartment looks magical Robs.” Steve said as he grabbed some naan and spooned a spicy curry dish onto his plate.
She smiled at him and landed on Elf, “To complete our holiday cheer marathon.” She said as she plated her own food and the movie began.
Steve rolled his eyes at her but would allow Robin to fully immerse him in her frankly contagious love of Christmas.
Lights strung about her apartment and on the tree softly twinkling around them as they ate their take out and relaxed into their Saturday night.
***
Sunday evening had Steve furthering progress on his essay and pacing his apartment, sure he had to be up for work at seven in the morning but it was only coming up on ten now and he couldn’t focus in his own home.
Packing up his laptop he already knew where he’d be heading before really admitting it to himself.
He had to test out the theory if the café really helped him complete his assignments or if it had been a one time thing.
He was out the door and down the block before he had time to talk himself out of it. The café was more bustling this time of night, not packed by any means but a group of students took up space at a communal table as well as a smattering of other people with books or their own lap tops holed up in their own staked out work spaces.
Steve walked in to the telltale jingle of the overhead entryway bell.
The long haired man from before had his hair tied up in a messy bun and was behind the espresso machines chatting with another employee who had curly brown hair and a Hawaiian print shirt.
Steve approached as the intriguing metal head was saying, “If you’re so sure you can run a more exciting and solid campaign, be my guest dude.”
“It’s just this current one is a blood bath Eddie, you’re killing off characters left and right, dude.” The younger man complained in a petulant tone.
The conversation broke as Steve reached the register, the Hawaiian shirt employee with the name tag ‘Dustin the Daring’ turned to help him.
The other man just noticing his presence went a little quiet but gave him a welcoming smile, Steve hadn’t been mistaken before, he had dimples.
Steve smiled shyly in return, Dustin looked between them, “Hey man what can I get for you?”
Steve fiddled with the strap of his messenger bag, “Hey, could I get a medium triple oatmilk latte?” He asked, very aware of the other mans’ gaze on him.
Dustin rang him up and took his payment, Steve scrounged up a few stray dollar bills to tuck in their tip jar.
The employee asked, “You play DnD, man?”
Steve gave him a look and laughed softly, “Uh, no, I do supervise an after school club for some of my middle schoolers- but honestly I have no clue what’s really going on most of the time.”
“Middle schoolers? Jeez that is an age I would never wanna deal with.” He said exaggeratedly.
Steve laughed again, “Oh yeah they’re brutal. Can’t let them smell your fear.”
The long haired man laughed, “You sure all you want is an extra shot oatmilk latte? Can I fix you up something a little more exciting?”
Steve locked eyes with him, he was ridiculously handsome, wide chocolate brown eyes and expressions that shifted over his features in a fun way to keep up with way.
Something about chestnut curls and doe eyes always made Steve weak in the knees.
Steve blinked, “Uh, sure. I’m not a fan of super sweet, and as long as it’s dairy free I’m good.”
“Nothing too sweet for you, sweetheart. Got it.” The guy winked at him.
Steve could feel his blush creep up his cheeks like a forest fire.
Oh, that was a cute reaction, Eddie thought to himself as he busied his hands making the drink.
“I’m with Dusty on that, middle school, no thanks. Have a hard time dealing with Dusty and his level is that of a middle school kid.” The guy joked.
Dustin scoffed near him, “Fuck off Eddie the ancient.”
Eddie shot him a glare, “Keep the ancient comments at bay kid. This’ll be you someday.”
Steve laughed at their banter, “Ancient? What’s that make me man?” He said to Dustin.
Dustin looked at him, “You can’t be more than 25, right?”
Steve balked, “Oh thanks I guess, but closer to 30 would be more accurate.”
Eddie smiled down at the concoction he was crafting for this adorable new- hopefully regular.
“Well, shit, keep drinking from that fountain of youth, Eddie’s still got you beat.” The guy joked.
Steve had a name now for the long haired man, who might be flirting with him, Eddie, his brain held onto the information.
“Dusty do you like being employed here? 33 is not ancient my man.” Eddie scoffed and drizzled something on the top of Steve’s drink.
Steve’s new Eddie file in his brain filled in, called me sweetheart, plays DnD, and is 33.
Steve piped up, “I’m 28 and if 33 is ancient what’s 45 mean to you?”
Dustin laughed freely, “Sheesh I dunno, do people still try at that age?”
Eddie wound up a rag that was tucked underneath one of the espresso machines, and snapped it at Dustin, “45 is also not old, and Dustin is 22 going on 12 so I guess he fits into your demographic of students perfectly. Hey Dusty, maybe you can join his middle schoolers DnD club?”
Steve found himself smothering a laugh as Dustin threw his hands up and huffed off to the back room.
Eddie turned to face him and slid over the mug as an offering.
Steve fiddled with the handle of the mug, “Is this a surprise or are you gonna tell me what you made?”
Eddie bit his lip and broke eye contact momentarily, “I’d tell ya,” He leaned across the counter closer to Steve and lowered his voice to a stage whisper, “But then I’d hav’ta kill ya.”
Steve rolled his eyes, body still feeling warm from the way it felt to have Eddie’s undivided attention on him.
Eddie let out a small chuckle, “Just steamed cinnamon in with the oatmilk and drizzled honey on top, promise it wont be too sweet for you.”
Steve, like a lunatic, kind of wished Eddie would call him sweetheart again.
He closed his eyes and took a sip still standing at the counter his eyes shot back open, “This is incredible, what’s the drink called?”
Eddie beamed a mega watt smile his way, “What’s your name?” He asked back in lieu of an answer.
“Steve.” He replied taking another sip of the heavenly concoction.
Eddie rapped his rings on the counter, “Guess it’s a Steve special then.”
Steve gave him a shy smile, “Thanks Eddie.” He said and stood awkwardly for a beat, “Should probably get some work done.”
The comment broke the moment and Eddie stepped back a little, “Sure thing, just come up if you need anything, we like getting new regulars in here.”
Steve smiled again, thinking to himself, duh, he’s probably like this with everyone. It’s his job to make drinks and connections. Steve was reading too much into it.
He made his way to a comfy oversized chair in the corner to set up for about an hour or so of school work.
Eddie watched from afar as Steve removed his bomber jacket, he had on an honest to god sweater vest, why was that sexy? Eddie felt like a goner and made his way to bribe Dustin not to tell Max about the interaction.
She was already teasing him about his strategic retreat, definitely not pure avoidance thank you very much- from the stranger the first time he was in.
Maybe he’d be coming in more frequently now?
He stepped in back to send Dustin out on the floor as he went over this weeks upcoming order.
Dustin was finishing a load of dishes, “Uh, Eddie- what was that? You definitely called that dude sweetheart.”
Eddie paused forgetting that he had in fact called a stranger sweetheart, “Um, under no circumstances tell Max I did that.”
“Wait!” Dustin’s eyes got larger, “Is that the nerdy dude you hid in the back from?!”
“How do you even know that?!” Eddie hissed under his breath.
“Max, Mike, and I have a group chat, duh.” Dustin said like it was obvious, “Too late about them not knowing about the sweetheart comment.” Dustin made a kissy face at Eddie.
“Get out of my back room and go do your job in the café.” Eddie said dejectedly, his life was overtaken by the absolute children he employed.
“Aw don’t be mad Eddie, we love you man!” Dustin said as he made his way out of the back.
Eddie took a grounding breath in and shook his head. Making his way to his desk and repeating the conversation in his head, sweetheart? What was his damage?
He hadn’t felt so off his footing around someone in a long time. He hoped he hadn’t made it weird already.

Steve’s week was going kind of shitty. He had a sit down with a parent who didn’t understand why their kid wasn’t getting a better grade, when said child was not turning in a single assignment or participating in class.
After multiple conversations about how Steve could help them succeed it seemed at home was a tough place in the moment. It made him wish his reach went beyond the classroom.
Another day a kid fell twisting from their desk after a fallen IPad and tumbled face first- the sickening crack and subsequent gushing bloody nose derailed the day a bit.
It was only Wednesday and he was exhausted, counting down the days, maybe with more excitement than his students for the upcoming holiday break. Two weeks his brain supplied as he made his way home.
It was only slightly after four as he walked past the café his steps slowed as he got closer to the entrance, an afternoon caffeine boost sounded nice. He followed his instinct and grabbed the handle making the split decision to stop in.
Mad Max was at the register the entire café was pretty filled with an array of patrons she nodded her head in greeting, “Welcome back Zombie Steve.”
He flashed her a smile, “Look no sleep walking today! I’m here amongst the living.”
Max laughed, “But are they? Are any of us? Is this just one big simulation?” She listed off as Eddie came up from the back room, flannel sleeves pushed past his forearms hands still damp from whatever task he was tending to before.
Steve’s eyes took notice of the visible tattoos. Tattoos, long hair, heavy silver rings- and Steve had on dark khakis and a fucking cardigan. There’s no way he was in Eddie’s league he thought as he snapped his eyes back to Max.
“Max we did it!” Eddie said, catching Max in the cleanest high five producing a loud smack that resonated between them.
“Sick, what’d we do?” She asked warily.
Eddie gestured to Steve, “Snagged a new regular, three is a pattern man!” Eddie gave him a joyful eye-crinkling smile.
Steve laughed, “I dunno, do I get a pin or something?” He straightened his glasses frames, did he imagine Eddie tracking the movement?
“No pin but you get the innate knowledge that you’re now woven into our weird little world.” Eddie joked.
Max shot Steve a glance, “See? Simulation. Whatcha getting today?”
“Could I get a to-go small double shot oat-“ Steve was cut off.
“-oatmilk latte with,” Eddie leaned over Max’s shoulder and finished the sentence with a flourish, “Cinnamon steamed in and honey on top. If you wanted the Steve Special again.” Eddie smirked.
“Yeah, I’d like that it wasn’t too sweet, just perfect.” Steve gave a shy smile as Max’s eyes went wide.
Steve swore he heard her under her breath say to Eddie, “sweetheart?”
Eddie pinched her arm and walked over to the espresso bar to make the drink. Steve finished the transaction and thanked an annoyed looking Max who was rubbing her arm.
“How’s your week going?” Eddie asked as he went through the motions of making the drink.
A group of three customers stepped up to order, taking Max’s attention off of them.
“Honestly?” Steve raised his eyebrows at Eddie.
“Oh yeah, gore and all, no stone unturned.” He said back.
“…my week has been absolute shit, and trust me you don’t want the gore because that entails a shattered bloody nose from a nasty fall and a parent meeting from the actual depths of hell, so this, right here-“ Steve picked up the proffered recyclable to-go cup, “- is the literal high light of my week so far.”
Eddie threw his head back and laughed, “Happy to be part of the solution Steve.” Eddie hated to admit he was more than a little smitten, the guy gave him a rambling, dramatic, insight to his week thus far and Eddie wanted to know more.
Eddie was known for his dramatics so it was a nice change of pace.
Up close and with the time spent to really look Eddie noticed the smattering constellation of moles decorating Steve’s neck, jaw, and cheeks. It made him even more handsome. Eddie was always a sucker for things that added to the uniqueness of someone.
The masculine square jaw Steve had was oddly soften by the beauty marks and long lashes behind his wire rimmed frames. Eddie tried not to be obvious as he took that in.
Steve was more than a bit distracted by the strong column of Eddie’s throat on display, more ink curling up from his collar bones barely peeking over the neckline of his shirt.
Max’s voice rang through, “Eddie we still have apple juice right?” Said in a tone that clearly was repeating the question.
His head turned to her as he processed the words, “Apple..yup, yeah just got the shipment in we’re stocked for apple cider.”
She turned away with the answer and let the customer continue their order. “Oh apple cider?” Steve asked.
“It’s good, but that particular one is tooth rotting levels. Might be a little much for you- sweet enough already.” Eddie said as he got started on the line of drinks that had just been ordered.
The planes of Steve’s cheekbones tinged red as he sipped his drink and made his way to head home with his magical drink.
“Thanks for the drink Eddie.” Steve said a little breathlessly as Eddie looked up and gave him a dimpled grin.
“No problem. You’re a regular now, no take backs.” Eddie teased as Steve turned to leave.
Max yelled at his retreating back, “See ya later sweetheart!”
Eddie shot her a murderous look.
Steve waved and laughed as he made his way to the door.
Yeah, you’d have to pry the new regular title from Steve’s cold dead hands, no give backs.

Hell week finished up with no real bumps along the rest of the way. Steve was getting down to the wire for his essay to be completed. Friday evening rolled around and Steve made himself dinner.
Sautéing vegetables and shrimp with bright and hot spices for fajitas as he outlined the rest of his paper.
He knew he’d end up at Those About to Rock and so what if he changed into his black jeans and a denim button down. It was something he’d wear to make an impression.
Not that this was a date.
Steve fixed his hair, waking up the volume after a long day and dabbing on some chapstick before he grabbed his necessities to try and get some more work done.
Robin was at a work summit this weekend leaving Steve to his own devices. At another time in his life nine on a Friday night meant mingling at bars and maybe looking for someone to go home with.
Now it was working on his grad school homework at a café. He sighed an exasperated laugh at himself, he knew he was being ridiculous, he checked himself out in the mirror as he slipped on his winter coat and hoped Eddie was working tonight.
***
Steve walked in to a fairly quiet set up with Dustin behind the line with another thin, tall, and dark haired boy in a baseball style tee, “Yo, Steve what’s up?!”
Steve smiled and made his way to the register, “Hey, quiet Friday?” Steve greeted.
The other guy commented to Dustin, “This is Steve?”
Steve’s brow furrowed, “You guys do this with all new customers?” Steve asked feeling confused.
Dustin spoke over his coworker, “Oh yeah, yup, Eddie- our boss, with the long hair, he wants to make sure everyone feels welcome here, so uh, that means he likes us all to stay up on the regulars and y’know how service industry can be-“
Steve strung together the information, “Oh yeah don’t have to tell me twice, my first year of college I worked at an ice cream parlor that was sailor themed, and well, irrelevant, but I get it. Wait, Eddie’s your boss? Does he manage the café?” Steve’s curiosity got the better of him.
The other boy was ignoring them and texting as Steve spoke to Dustin.
“Manage it? No, I mean well that too but Eddie owns it, Vickie is our other manager she’s got short red hair.” Dustin shared the information easily.
Steve nodded, ah so pixie cut has a name, he wanted to gather more intel for Robin.
“Whatcha getting’ tonight?” Dustin asked as another customer entered.
“Small oatmilk late with an extra shot.” Steve said not wanting to be too extra when Eddie wasn’t there to make his special drink for him.
Dustin repeated the order back and ran his card. Mike started in on the drink and glared at him from behind the espresso machine.
Steve took the mug, liquid sloshing over the rim as it settled, and walked to his favored corner spot comfy chair and got his usual set up ready to go.
Mike had texted Eddie, ‘Sweetheart’s here, kind of a dork? First time seeing him, don’t see the appeal, why do Dusty and Max like him?’
The immediate response from his boss was, Mike, boundaries, it’s my night off only text if the building is on fire.
Dustin pulled his own phone out and texted Eddie, ‘Geeky sweetheart is dressed well tonight, no cardigan or sweater vest in sight.’
Eddie’s immediate response was, Fuck off.
Followed by, Dressed in what?
Dustin sent off, ‘wouldn’t you like to know.’

Eddie shuffled around his apartment, joint tucked behind his ear as he sipped on an ice cold Coors. He let his tuxedo marked cat he affectionately named Mouse wrap around his ankles as he paced.
He stopped. His winding companion mewled for attention. Eddie crouched and pet her, scratching under her chin just the way she liked.
He really was going to head to a north side bar to support Gareth with his stand up gig his friend was work shopping a show for tour and right now he was ironing out the delivery and details.
He was on around ten so Eddie technically had time if he needed to grab some coffee before catching the bus to Rogers Park. He could use a little caffeine.
Perks of living literally above the café, all he had to do was exit the employee back door and go up a side set of stairs to reach his own door.
Major downside was the lack of boundaries he had surrounding the shop. He had a great team of employees currently- even when they were annoying children he still placed a good deal of trust in them.
Keeping the apartment had been a point of contention for Rick, even though he and Eddie lived together at his place, Eddie still kept his apartment for being able to crash at between work shifts and also keep Mouse since Rick claimed he was allergic.
In the long run Eddie’s glad he didn’t waver on keeping the place. It had been his haven and escape route when he realized how stifling the relationship was, so much of his Eddie-ness had to be toned down so it was Rick approved.
He made his split decision to grab some espresso on his way out, so what if the incentive was catching a glimpse of Steve?
He pulled on his leather coat and denim vest over it. He shook out his curls, hair in it’s usual magnificent mess he made fast work of smudging on some dark eye liner, grinned at Mouse, “Mousy do you think I’m cute enough now?”
The returning answer from his four-legged friend was her disinterestedly licking her back paw and ignoring him.
“Alright, it means nothing right? He’s been coming in for a week. I’m not attached I just need caffeine.” Eddie said aloud to himself as he grabbed his keys and tried to believe his own lies.
He found himself coming into the café to a very smug looking Dustin, “What’s up boss?”
Steve was sat in what Eddie now thought of as his usual corner, in the comfy leather wide seat chair, laptop on his thighs and glasses perched on his nose- squinting ever so slightly at the screen.
Eddie looked to Dustin, “Just needed some caffeine before Gareth’s set.” He flashed a quick grin.
And Dustin had been right, the denim button down Steve had on fit his frame in a way his ‘teacher clothing’ didn’t hug him. Hanging onto his silhouette snug across his chest and shoulders, Eddie strained his eyes as he leaned his hip against the counter.
Was that a hint of chest hair?
He couldn’t unsee that now. Thought about how it’d feel under his fingers, licked and nipped across by his mouth.
Well, fuck. It had been awhile since Eddie had wanted like this. He fiddled with the zipper on his jacket as Steve looked up.
He saw the other man and waved tentatively. Dustin snorted as he slid Eddie’s quad shots over ice with one pump of vanilla and a splash of cream his way, “Go talk to him, please Eddie, you’re killin’ me.”
Eddie glanced at Dustin, “I’m going to but not because you told me to, got it? Also- this is not ammo for your group chat.” He chided, moving away from the counter towards the other man.
Walking over Steve gave him a wide, open smile as he removed his airpods, seemingly pleased Eddie was approaching. “Hey.” Eddie said and sort of cringed at himself, “Looks like you’re a real party animal on a Friday night.” He teased.
Steve tugged a hand through his caramel- bronze locks and gave Eddie a small self deprecating smile, “Don’t you know it- nothing says former keg king like reviewing your essay on queer literature.”
Eddie laughed and tucked away the information on what Steve was working on, “I’m in the presence of a king? Alas but I am just a lowly bard and a humble servant at your service, m’lord.” Eddie did a sweeping curtsy in front of Steve in the big comfy chair.
Embarrassing himself with his antics. It was worth it the way Steve laughed breathlessly at his over the top game.
“The way you dress I wouldn’t have guessed it but you’re an overgrown nerd Eddie.” Steve said coming down from his laughter.
“Aw, sweetheart, you wound me!” Eddie said back of his hand to his forehead like a damsel about to faint.
“Absolute nerd!” Steve teased back, registering that Eddie called him sweetheart again, maybe it’s just the way he was? He seemed to talk to everyone in an animated manner.
“Says the man that owns a sweater vest.” Eddie lifted an expressive eyebrow at him, “Not knockin’ it just stating facts.” Hands up in a placating gesture.
Steve smothered a smile, “You working tonight?”
“King Steve I am only passing through, needing the nourishment of caffeine- heading to a comedy thing, event? Show? I’m not sure the verbiage my friend Gareth does stand up.” Eddie shrugged at the end.
Steve’s eyes were roaming over the patches on the denim vest layered over his leather jacket, he had a small rainbow flag over his left breast pocket amongst band pins and cutesy patches.
Steve looked up at him from behind his lenses, “That sounds fun.” Steve said casually, he didn’t really know this person, which was weird he felt too comfortable under his gaze- he wanted to be there, he needed his attention.
Eddie sipped his drink, “Was gonna catch the bus over to Rogers Park, he’s on at ten, uh, wanna come?”
Steve paused for a beat and Eddie backtracked, “Ah, shit man, I know you’re hard at work- and uh you don’t like know me. So no sweat!”
The rambling and visible shift in his confidence made Steve want to reach out to him, “Actually a distraction would be fucking welcome at this point, might do me some good to step away from it for a little, my brain is like scrambled eggs the more I edit and re-edit this.” Steve said.
Eddie smirked, “Really? Wanna head over with me?” Eddie asked voice still small.
Steve ran another hand through his hair tugging at the forelock, Eddie wondered if it was a nervous habit. He cursed his impulsive streak, at least there wasn’t a lot of pressure of carrying on a conversation once Gareth’s stand up bit started.
Steve stood and gathered his stuff, this close up, with no counter between them Eddie realized Steve was ever so slightly shorter than him, it made something hot run through him at that thought.
Steve tucked his belongings away. “We headed to the stop two blocks up?” He asked.
Eddie nodded, “Yeah that’s the one it should be coming in about fifteen.”
“Perfect my place is close to there just gonna drop this stuff off real quick if that’s okay?” Steve asked as he placed his mug back on the counter.
Dustin grabbed it, “Heading out?” He asked.
“Catching a comedy show I guess.” Steve smiled.
Dustin tried to discreetly glance at Eddie, “Gareth’s? Dude has me in stitches when he comes in the café!”
“Yeah he’s always been a bit of a clown.” Eddie said.
Steve shot him a look with a sarcastic tone rolling off his tongue, “Feels rich coming from you.”
Dustin snorted a laugh, “I like you Steve, give ‘em hell, man. Have him home by midnight, Eddie needs all the beauty rest he can get.”
Eddie threw him the middle finger as Steve said his goodbyes and they broke out into the cold winter night.
“Are these all your favorite bands?” Steve asked as they walked towards the bus stop and his apartment.
Eddie looked down at his denim vest, “More or less. I’ve always been a metal head and this ol’ gal has been a part of my armor since my senior year of high school.” Eddie said candidly.
Steve smiled softly, “Sentimental? I wouldn’t have guessed.”
“Don’t be spreading those kinda rumors about me, people might get the wrong idea.” Eddie said hands shoved in his denim vest pockets as he bumped an elbow casually against Steve’s.
Steve looked down the block, “This is me I’ll just be like two minutes.”
Eddie smiled and procured a joint from said pocket, “I’ll keep myself occupied, Stevie.”
The nickname made Steve’s blood run hot, the doe eyes on him and the nickname falling from Eddie’s lips just made the fire-y feeling of want rise in him.
He nodded dumbly and licked his lips as Eddie lit the joint between his own plush ones.
“Save a hit for me?” Steve asked as he slowly walked backwards.
Eddie gave him a happily surprised look, “Better hurry up then, sweetheart.” He winked as he held in his first hit.
Steve turned and picked up the pace to throw his messenger bag into his apartment and meet back up with Eddie.
He grabbed his phone and sent a text to Robin,
Eddie, from the café? Long hair, pretty eyes.
Yes? And what? Am I decoding something here? I know you’ve been back multiple times this week- not just for the coffee and ambiance then?
Invited me to his friends stand up gig and I agreed but now I’m like, not cool enough??
Steve you were a bona-fide hottie in high school and now you’re like ‘hot for teacher’ brand of geek chic you are cool enough he INVITED you. Go. Make friends.
This equal parts helped and not at all Robs.
Dingus! Just have fun!
Yes, right. Fun I can do that.
LMK when you’re home, or if you even go home?
ROB!!! STOP!
Okaaay but don’t act like he isn’t exactly your type when it comes to guys.
Fuck you, I love you, text you later Robbie.
Xoxo HAVE FUN!
Steve half jogged his way back to Eddie and panted an exhale when he approached, “Did you run back here?” Eddie asked around a cloud of dank smoke.
“You told me to hurry.” Steve said simply.
Eddie’s brain did a jump in mental gymnastics because he had told Steve, and Steve listened.
Obedient. His traitorous mind supplied.
He held onto the joint, “Always do what you’re told, Stevie?” Eddie said in a gruff voice.
Steve blushed, “Only when there’s weed involved.”
Eddie barked a laugh, “Good to know, and lucky for you, you definitely earned it.”
Something rose up in Steve at the edge the banter had taken, he reached out for the joint, hoping it would settle his nerves, he placed it between his own lips and drew in a deep toke.
Eddie’s dilated pupils tracked the movement as Steve held the smoke in his lungs, he liked the heat in Eddie’s gaze, he let the smoke out in a plume of three consecutive rings.
“Show off.” Eddie chuckled. Amused at how hot it was to see someone he perceived as a stuffy middle school teacher blow smoke rings like a champ. It was undeniably hot.
He wanted to dig up other hidden secrets that were obscured by the cultivated image of wire rimmed glasses and knit sweater vests.
Steve took another hit as they approached the bus stop. He glanced up at the stars and pointed, “There’s Orion.”
Eddie looked up too, tonight had taken such a weird turn, but he felt surprisingly at ease with Steve.
Steve handed him back the more than half way smoked joint, Eddie pinched the end to put it out and place it back in his pocket for safe keeping.
“Little bookworm know any other constellations?” Eddie mused.
Steve giggled and sighed out, “Little book worm? You’ve got a penchant for nicknames, huh?”
Eddie laughed too his mind felt fuzzy the high kicking in full force softening the evening to something akin to a dreamy fairytale state.
“I’m too fuckin’ high for this.” He joked as the bus came to a stop before them.
They flashed their metro cards and grabbed a seat, it’d be a quick trip only a handful of stops to the destination.
“Eds.” Steve said sitting next to him.
Eddie’s brain waited a few beats before it caught up, he turned to the other man, “What?”
Steve beamed at him eyes crinkling and another giggle escaping, “See I can do nicknames too.”
Eddie joined in on the laughter, “Eddie is already a nickname.”
“Well I guess I just nicknamed your nickname, Eds.” Steve said back through fits of giggles. Eddie thought it must’ve been some good shit he’d picked up from the dispensary.
Or maybe it was the company he got to share it with, a mix of both.
Time tilted on its axis as their stop approached and Eddie gave Steve a hand up from the bus seat. Skin on skin a mini electric feeling between the meeting of palms.
Steve locked eyes with him as he came to his feet, he leaned in close and said, “Thanks Eds.”
As they dismounted the small step from bus to curb. Eddie took the lead to navigate them to the bar he’d been to it enough times in support of Gareth. One of his usual comedy haunts.
They grabbed some cheap PBRs from the bartender and found a sticky two top near the stage, “We’re very upfront.” Steve commented high still in the forefront of his senses.
Eddie chuckled, “Yeah Gareth likes some light hearted heckling, gotta give ‘em some hell.”
“You two good friends?” Steve asked dipping his finger through the condensation on the outside of his beer.
Eddie gave him a warm smile, “The best, buds since middle school- we were in a band together, fuckin’ DnD club. He’s a good guy.”
“That’s like me n’ Rob, my other half.” Steve smiled.
Eddie’s faltered slightly, of course Steve was taken.
Steve shook his head, “Robin’s a regular too, morning though, freckles, kinda outgrown french bob?”
Eddie nodded, “Oh, oh yeah I’ve seen her I didn’t realize you two were-“ He sort of gestured his hand in front of himself.
It had been naive to get his hopes up.
“Oh she’s the greatest, definitely my better half, smarter too, best friend since high school minimum wage shit, went to college together, she insisted on Evanston after I was just…kind of depressed and directionless in Indianapolis.” Steve stopped himself, “Fuck am I rambling? Can we blame it on the weed, I swear I used to be cool.”
Eddie laughed genuinely at that. So what if he had Robin? They could still be friends. It was silly to have felt so interested in such a short amount of time.
The lights dimmed from between acts and Gareth took the stage to smattering of hoots and hollers, a few of which Eddie contributed.
Steve clapped loudly to add to the hype. A strawberry blonde with a perky ponytail dragged a chair up to him and Eddie, “Hey Eddie I ditched the kid tonight to keep an eye on my man.”
Eddie laughed and gave the woman a one armed hug, “And who do we have here?” Her eyes narrowed on Steve.
“This is Steve my new café regular and a causality to my antics tonight.” Eddie said introducing them.
She put out her hand, “I’m Chrissy, Gareth’s wife.” She smiled kindly at him and sort of surveyed him.
Gareth had a 90s grunge aesthetic going for him a very Waynes World vibe that worked for the guy.
His stand up routine was observational and anecdotal the perfect blend of personal and political, Steve found himself nearly in tears over the almost half hour set.
His closing joke began, “So I dunno if anyone here is bi?” a few people hollered- Chrissy did, and Steve included his own small whoop noise feeling less inhibited by the weed and beer.
Eddie gave him a side glance and smiled, sipping the last dredges of his beer.
“Cool, cool, cool- I am not, I’m just your average privileged cis, hetero, white guy married to my beautiful bisexual wife.” He continued.
Eddie piped up, “Not entirely hetero!”
Gareth was startled into a laugh from the comment, “C’mon Eddie our experimental kiss in 6th grade didn’t make me gay, clearly my charms worked wonders on you though.” The audience responded well to the interaction laughter picking up around the bar.
Eddie leaned back in his chair taking in the attention and doing an exaggerated shrug.
Chrissy was holding her stomach from laughing so hard, Eddie wiped his eye, “What can I say you’re a handsome boy with an affinity for dungeons and dragon!” He snapped back, prompting Gareth to move on with the joke.
Earning more laughter and claps from around the bar as he ended with a zinger as the lights came up slightly he took a small bow and hopped off the small stage to join their table, “Always gotta say somethin’ don’t you Eddie?” He said as he looked to Steve, “And who’s this, am I that replaceable?”
“Great set, man. I’m Steve.” He shook Gareth’s hand, “Can I grab us a round of drinks, what’cha guys want?” Steve asked getting up slowly.
“Oh you don’t have to.” Eddie protested.
Steve brushed him off, “So another PBR and?” He looked to Chrissy and Gareth.
“Oh I like Steve, I vote we keep Steve on the island!” Gareth said happily, “How about some Goose Island? A 312.”
Steve nodded and looked to Chrissy, “Can I get a cider? Whatever’s in a can is good with me!”
“Perfect, I’ll be right back.” He said as he headed to the bar.
Chrissy scooched her chair into Eddie’s space, “Steve is cute with the whole-“ She moved her hands around her own face, “Hair and glasses thing he has going on!”
Eddie sighed, “I know but he’s like a brand new regular at the shop and like I’m 90 percent sure he’s seeing someone? Also he is cute and I’m like…?” Eddie plucked at his denim vest.
“You’re a smokestack Eddie- is that how you were gonna finish the sentence, ‘cuz any other outcome would’ve been a lie!” Gareth snapped at him.
Eddie shook his head and giggled, “He shared a joint with me, he can blow smoke rings, why is that sexy?!”
Chrissy cracked up at that, “I’m not sure but I fully agree, we’ll figure out if he’s single or not okay?” She looked to Eddie for confirmation.
He twisted up his lips in a frown, “I dunno, like this was kind of a spontaneous outing I invited him on a whim and he was up for it?”
“That already sounds promising.” Gareth butt in.
“Atleast don’t be obvious?” Eddie asked with an edge to pleading in his tone.
Steve came back hands full of the beverages and set them down, “I think tonight’s the most I’ve laughed in weeks.” He said as he took his previous seat, “Usually I have to smother my reaction when I overhear 12 year olds throw insults at each other.”
“Teacher?” Chrissy asked.
“Yup. Middle school.” Steve conceded.
Gareth lifted his bottle in a toast, “To laughter, and my goddamn beautiful spouse, creative best friend, and new favorite middle school teacher Steve!”
Steve laughed again feeling included with the group in a way he hadn’t in a long time. His unit was just him and Robs, with her out of town he hadn’t even imagined his weekend taking this turn.
They clinked their variety of refreshments and cheers-ed amongst each other.
Conversation flowed easily they teased Steve about dealing with middle schoolers, he found out Chrissy was a dance teacher and had some overlaps with kids they mutually knew.
Steve shared a story about the drive out to Wisconsin for the perfect tree and spending the day decorating with Rob.
Chrissy spoke up after he showed pictures of the final outcome and her nauseatingly cute apartment decked out with holiday cheer, “How long have you and Rob been together?”
Steve choked on his drink, wheezed, then started cracking up. He finally caught his breath, “Oh, oh no- no, Rob’s my best friend like my Gareth equivalent, but she’s a lesbian so not completely a Gareth equivalent? Nah not seeing anyone right now.” He tried hard to not look directly to Eddie when he added the last part.
Gareth chuckled, “Well she has a sick sense of style when it comes to decking the halls.”
Eddie was grinning at him now, he had a massive weight lifted from earlier and a stupid hopeful pit in the core of his stomach about the attractive man next to him.
The evening wound down as Eddie and Steve said their goodbyes, Chrissy gave both of them a hug and Gareth offered Steve a fist bump as they set off on the way to the bus.
Eddie stopped out front of the bar, “Oh I got us a Lyft think the last bus was done for the night.”
“Thanks Eddie, what do I owe you?” Steve asked, a sleepiness settling around his features.
Eddie gave him an affronted look, “Nothing you grabbed a round and you agreed to coming on this little adventure tonight, so we are definitely even.”
Steve furrowed his brow, “If you insist, man. I had a good time though tonight.” Steve finished the sentence softly.
Their rideshare pulled up, “I had fun too,” Eddie opened the door for him, “My king your chariot awaits.” He gestured into the Honda Civic.
Steve snorted, “Such a nerd.”
They shared the trip in comfortable silence. Steve pulled his chapstick out from his pocket and applied it to his lips, unaware of Eddie’s eyes on him, he turned and caught the tail end of Eddie staring.
He offered the chapstick to Eddie who dumbly took it, brain short-circuiting to something feral his lips touched this and now it’s touching my lips.
He applied it to his own lips, offering it back with a small smile as Steve capped it and put it back in his pocket.
It tasted faintly of vanilla and peppermint. Something that would stay imprinted in his mind long after the chapstick wore off.
The car pulled in front of the café breaking the spell cast over the shared moment. Both men exited from their respective doors.
“See ya around Eddie?” Steve asked.
“Yeah at the café, you have to on account of being a regular now.” Eddie teased.
“Sounds like I have to then, I’ll be there upholding the duties of a café regular. Thanks for inviting me, I didn’t realize how much I needed that.” Steve said as he shoved his hands into his coat pockets psyching himself up to walk home.
“It was fun sweetheart, I’m glad you’re taking your duties seriously, I’m sure I’ll catch you during the week, but now I think you need rest.” Eddie gave him a half wave and a shy smile as Steve turned to walk home.
“I think you might be right.” Steve said around a yawn.
Eddie’s mind thought back to Steve doing as he was told. Get some rest. Be obedient.
Eddie was still watching his retreating form as Steve paused and turned around, he threw another wave at Eddie and spun back around, chin ducked towards his chest, quickening his pace home.
Eddie went up the back steps skipping every other one to his door and opened up to a bemused looking Mouse tugging on shoelaces from the shoes lined up at his entryway.
“Mousy, Daddy had a good night. He might've even met someone, I gotta trust my instincts I think this is someone important.” He said while toeing off his shoes and scooping up his attention starved cat.
He rubbed his cheek against hers as she purred playfully at the interaction, “I wonder if he likes cats?”
He kissed her head and tossed her on his made bed as he went to wash his face and finish the rest of the shared joint before bed, a hint of vanilla and peppermint lingering on his lips.

Steve took out his phone when he got home,
Had a really good night, he’s entertaining- and his friend doing stand up was actually funny!
Way to go Stevie, see you’ve still got it!
Lies Rob, all lies. His face is stupidly attractive, like how am I supposed to go into the café and act normal now?
Did you get his number??
….uh shit was I supposed to?
I take it back you def are off your game, bro.
Don’t fuckin’ bro me Rob! I’ll give you the full run down when you’re back- I need you to analyze this shit for me. It wasn’t even a date, just a random hang- does he do this with all regulars?!
Shit Stevie looks like we’ve got some digging to do.
Unreal, like tonight was good- but was I supposed to ask for a number? That would’ve been creepy? Shit shit shit, I shared my chapstick with him was that creepy?!
Calm down. Rest. Don’t freak out. I’ll be home Sunday afternoon we will dissect this the moment I’m back!
You’re an angel Robs.
Don’t I know it dingus!

Steve spent his weekend second guessing his not date with his passing acquaintance Eds. Shit, Eddie.
Eddie who invited him.
Eddie who sometimes calls him sweetheart.
Scratch that, increasingly calls him sweetheart.
Eddie who insisted on his ‘regular customer’ status.
So why was Steve acting so deranged? He’s only crossed paths with the man a few times, and they’ve all been positive interactions.
It was Sunday afternoon and the clock was dragging on before Robin was supposed to come to his place. Steve was restless and wanted his oatmilk latte.
He vacillated between his crushing self doubt and his reasonable maturity while laying on the couch and memorizing the lines on his ceiling.
“Fuuuck.” He said out loud to himself.
Shoved his hair under a knit purple hat complete with oversized pompom on top. He might not even be there.
Steve thought to himself and he aggressive stepped into his shoes.
He was torn between desperately wanting Eddie to be there or having the coast clear to avoid finding out Eddie regretted inviting him as the weekend went on.
He slipped his sherpa lined bomber jacket on and repositioned his glasses before locking up and facing the café for some much needed afternoon pick me up.
***
Eddie had an overnight shift and was having a proper lazy Sunday before he had to step foot into the café. He knew Max and Mike had it under control.
He scrolled on his phone in one hand and stroked down Mouse’s back with the other, multitasking.
A text came through from Max, ‘nerd alert in an atrocious purple hat.’ Was all it read.
Eddie hadn’t seen or heard from his minions about Steve since their impromptu Friday hang out. He wasn’t sure if he scared him away or if Steve just happened to have a life outside of the café.
It seemed like a novel idea to Eddie who’s entire world was consumed by the damn place.
He was practicing self control today, working on quelling his impulses.
That was never his strong suit.
Max texted again, no words just a picture came through of a frowning Steve in a truly eye offending purple hat.
Eddie burst out a sharp laugh shaking the bed and startling Mouse who got annoyed and jumped down.
Max’s next text popped through, ‘stop ignoring me I know you’re up.’
He scoffed at her attitude and replied, I saw him Friday I’m not in until midnight there’s no way you’re guilting me down there.
She sent back, ‘He and Mike are talking about Gareth’s stand up, EDDIE you hung out outside of the café?!!!’
He laid in bed, Dustin really hadn’t been a complete shit and overshared that in their little group chat.
Nunya bizz Red. Back to work. He sent to further irk her.
‘Fine you don’t deserve my intel.’
Intel? Feels an awful lot like meddling.
‘*middle finger emoji*’

Eddie hadn’t been in and Steve felt alright- if he was being honest with himself he was a bit let down. He tried not to let himself get carried away just because they spent some random time together outside the confines of the café.
Max had laughed at his hat, “Oh now that’s ugly, you willing wore this in public?” While taking out her phone and Steve was pretty sure she snapped a picture.
Mike started chuckling on bar, “C’mon Max that’s elder abuse cut it out.”
Steve looked between the two of them, “Oh now this-“ He pointed between the two, “Is a dynamic I don’t like, I would never put you two together on the seating chart in my class.”
Max shook her head fondly, “Oh yeah I hate this scheduling too. Mike doesn’t do fuck all when he’s here, the worst.”
Mike grabbed a stray coffee bean and threw it at Max who gave him a thunderous glare until he stalked off the floor to restock the ice bins.
“Now that he’s gone what can I get for you today?” She said unfurling a customer service smile.
Steve laughed, “You’re something else Mad Max. I’m getting a small oatmilk latte for myself and a small almond milk cappuccino to-go today please.”
He grabbed the drink for himself and one for Robs as he made his was back home meeting his best friend approaching from the opposite direction, “Is that for me?!” Robin pointed at his hands holding the two drinks.
He passed her the cappuccino and unlocked the door to the stairs that lead up to his apartment, “Welcome back Robs how was the conference?” He asked happy to have his best friend back in town.
Robin made a stink face about the conference, “ I only got mansplained to on my own published article twice so I guess it was fine?”
Steve shook his head and laughed as he let them into his apartment.
“Now tell me everything about Friday please.” She said as she made herself comfortable on his couch.
So Steve did just that he walked her through from being at the café and working on his essay to the invite, the shared joint, and the actual stand up at the bar, then to the shared ride home.
Robin listened attentively, humming and nodding in places it called for until Steve completed the recall of the interactions.
“This all sounds normal, and good, to me. He sounds -one like he’s interested, and -two like he was interesting to be around. My game plan would be continue going to the café and see what unfolds from there- don’t sweat it or overthink it to death.” She gave him a soft look on her last sentence.
“Yes, don’t overthink it, I’ll try my best?” Steve returned the look with a uneasy smile as the two started laughing.
“Who am I kidding, between the two of us all we do is overthink shit like this- you used to be popular, how?!” Robin said as her giggling calmed down.
“Probably because I was emotionally immature, wore a letterman jacket and Tommy H. and I shared one brain cell?” Steve joked back sending the two into another round of laughter.

Wednesday was a late start for Steve so he was trying to grab coffee on his way into work,
Hey what time do you usually stop by the café in the morning?
8:10, why?
Me too, me too. Late start so I can come same time as you.
Okay I approve of this, meet you outside by 8?
You got it see ya soon Robs.

This earlier part of December was still more rain than snow, not quite cold enough yet to really accumulate any winter precipitation just a slushy mix.
Steve tugged on his dark brown chelsea boots, cuffed his olive khaki pants, and pulled his jacket over his tweed cardigan and grabbed what he needed for work in time to meet Robin.
The two walked into the café together to see Eddie, Vickie, and Max crushing the morning rush. Eddie looked up from the espresso bar next to Max and his face lit up, crinkling eyes and wide dimpled smile that felt like it was just for Steve.
His long wild hair was in a low bun with a black bandana tied to hold any errant strands out of his face. Steve returned the smile, cut short by Robin pinching his elbow.
“Ouch Robs.” He griped at her as they waited in line.
“Steve he fucking looks at you like you hung the moon you absolute dimwit.” Robin whispered under her breath at him.
“This is the first time I’ve seen him since Friday. I guess I may have overthought it a bit.” He quietly responded.
They stepped closer to the register as the line moved, Vickie taking orders and grabbing pastries as Eddie and Max cranked out drinks impressively fast keeping the sequence in play like a well orchestrated dance to get customers out the door in a timely manner.
“Hey good morning you two.” Vickie greeted.
She shot a glance to Robin and excitedly shared, “Did you see they announced a re-release for the box set with vinyl of all The Smiths works?”
“No I hadn’t but now I know what I’ll be looking into during this morning’s meeting!” Robin responded meeting Vickie’s enthusiasm.
“Okay so I’ve got your almond milk cappuccino, and for you?” Vickie looked to Steve but Robin answered for him, “Stevie will have a medium quad oatmilk latte?”
Steve nodded, “Thanks Robs.”
He moved his way down the line as Robin treated him to his drink and stole a few more seconds with Vickie.
Eddie smiled at him as he kept working, “Morning sweetheart, want the Steve special?”
Steve’s heart tapped a double time rhythm in his chest, “Yeah Eds, you know what I like.”
Eddie chuckled, “A nickname of a nickname.”
Robin slid next to Steve and watched Max hold back from having a meltdown when another customer awaiting their drink complained, “I asked for this iced.”
Robin shot Steve a look and Eddie intervened, “Yeah man, no problem it’ll just take a minute to fix it.”
Once the customer left Max glanced at Steve and Robin and huffed, “Idiots.” Under her breath.
They laughed while Eddie tried to tamper down his own amusement, “Hey Max, be nice- you’ve got 45 more minutes until Dusty’s in and you can be your own angry self on your own time.”
She gave Steve a deadpan look, “See what I have to put up with?” she whined.
“Pure torture Mad Max, sorry.” Steve said in a sympathetic tone.
Robin giggled as Max handed her the cappuccino, Eddie held Steve’s drink out for him as well, fingers brushing causing a swoop in his stomach as he gripped the cup, “Have a good day today Stevie.”
“You too Eddie.” Steve replied and got ready to make his way to work.
“Oh, wait!” Eddie said before he left the hand off counter.
“Yeah?” Steve paused feeling off his footing.
“Are you allergic to cats?” Eddie asked, expression open and curious.
Steve cocked his head at him, was he allergic to cats?
“No man, I love animals, don’t think I’m allergic to anything outside of dairy?” Steve responded. Ending it like more of a question than a statement.
Robin snorted, “Half of our freshman year of college Steve harbored a mama cat until she had her kittens and he secured them all homes.”
Steve’s eyes went wide, “Shut up Robs.” He elbowed his friend.
Steve turned bright red as both Eddie and Max made an in unison awwww- ing noise.
The two behind the espresso bar breaking into laughter as both Steve and Robin waved and headed out. Vickie calling out good bye specifically to Robin.
Once out of the café Robin linked her arm through Steve’s, “Did I hear someone call you sweetheart, dingus?”
Steve sighed and told her the story as they made their ways to their respective places of work.
***
He was inching closer to winter break it was almost in his grasp, one more week, his mind supplied unhelpfully as he got home from work and looked in his nearly empty refrigerator.
Food.
Then complete essay.
Maybe get to see Eddie?
Steve liked going in for the late night quiet of the café, it helped him get his work done, but also meant less customers and a better chance to interact with Eddie.
Keep playing at the tentative game they had started, this nebulous build up of getting to know each other.
He forced himself out to grab essentials from the grocery store some parts to make into meals for the weekend and restocking on his go to items. Once back at his apartment Steve realized he didn’t feel like cooking at all, the efforts of the day catching up to him.
He took the easiest route for nourishment and made himself a PB&J sandwich, putting Cheetos between the slices of bread for an added crunch. The fast excuse for a meal made him feel closer to 10 than 28 but it hit the spot.
He had grades to input for his students as well as finishing some of his own coursework, organizing his thoughts as he sipped his water between bites of sandwich.
He grabbed his laptop and course reading material as he pulled on his purple hat and jacket to head to Those About to Rock to get his caffeine and thinking cap on.
It was just closing in on 8 as he entered the cozy atmosphere college kids gathered around, Dustin and Mike sitting in the café with a few others playing DnD at one of the communal tables.
Dustin threw him a wave, “Hey man what’s up? That’s some hat!”
Mike’s own concentration was broken glancing to him and giving him a look, Steve wasn’t really sure how to interpret it aside from the fact that Mike didn’t really like him.
“Yeah it is, my warmest one.” Steve shrugged causing the pompom to shake with the movement.
The slighter boy by them with an almost mushroom style hair cut spoke softly as he reigned them back into their game.
Steve came up to the counter, Eddie and Vickie were chatting while doing some cleaning tasks, Vickie turned and saw him, “If I hadn’t seen you the other morning I really would’ve believed your ghost status.” She teased lightly.
Steve let out a small laugh, “Between the days getting shorter and shorter and most of the sunshine hours spent in an old classroom with 12 year olds I’m beginning to believe it myself.” Steve said back.
Eddie smiled at him, “I dunno Stevie you seem pretty opaque, and why would you be working on your laptop into your afterlife?”
Steve laughed brightly, “Shit, I hope whatever comes after doesn’t involve inputting grades, lesson plans, and the personal hell of my making trying to keep my GPA up this semester.”
Vickie nodded, “Yup I hope whatever is after I get to finally rest and not worry about trivial stuff like health insurance, student loans, or 401ks.”
Eddie’s smile twisted into more of a smirk, “Easy Vick, just do what I do and don’t worry about it now. We’ll never be afforded the luxury of retirement anyway so don’t sweat it!”
The three joined in laughing at the seemingly true yet dark humor of the statement.
Steve knew Vickie and Robin had exchanged numbers the day after he had grabbed his morning coffee with her, Robin in a surprisingly bold moment told her about an exhibit at the Art Institute without knowing Vickie had a degree in studio art.
The conversation spiraling into Vickie saying how she used to be a docent in her summer’s between classes there, and Robin asking if she’d like to accompany her to the exhibit.
Vickie said yes. That she’d love to.
And Robin secured her number and was flying high with that small win. The two coordinating their plans for the following week.
Vickie looked between Steve and Eddie, “I’m gonna get started on that mountain of dishes in the back, think you can handle it out here Eddie?”
She shot a smile at Steve as Eddie answered her stumbling over his words, “Oh, uh you, yes I got it under control.”
“I dunno Eds,” He gestured to Dustin’s table, “Looks like they could get rowdy.”
Eddie snorted, “Total nerd herd, and their other friend has a massive crush on Max, he looked heartbroken when they came in and it was me and Vickie.”
“Oh what’s Max’s read on it?” Steve asked intrigued about the daily gossip.
“She’s putting up this hard pass energy but she goes all blushy and screechy when Lucas comes in sooo.” Eddie did a silly jazz hands gesture.
Steve giggled, “Damn I’ll have to sit back and observe some time, like a little anthropology assignment in the café interactions.”
Eddie was leaning a forearm on the register, “Getting your usual?” He asked.
Steve nodded, “As a small double tonight, maybe I’ll still be able to sleep a bit then.”
“Sleep, psh, for the weak!” Eddie joked as he started making Steve’s drink.
“Oh wait, you didn’t charge me yet.” Steve said still holding his wallet.
“On me tonight, incentive to keep coming back.” Eddie shot him a wide grin.
Steve felt the familiar feeling he got around Eddie, a certain fluttery giddiness in his core.
“We’ve got an open mic night next Saturday, you should come, I have it on authority that sometimes the owner smokes a joint before it starts and, wouldn’t mind sharing some?” Eddie said as he poured the oatmilk over the espresso shots into the ceramic mug.
Steve chewed at his lip to keep his smile at bay, “That sounds like something I’d be open to.”
Eddie grinned at him in response, “Oh, and nice hat Stevie.” He leaned across the counter and tugged the corded strands that hung from the knit earflaps.
Steve felt his cheeks heat up from proximity, “I know you’re all just jealous of it.” He punched out in a haughty tone.
It pulled a laugh from Eddie, Steve found himself trying to figure out ways to collect more and more of Eddie’s laughter, it was addictive in the way it opened his features.
“Okay, go get started on your work.” Eddie jokingly dismissed him.
“You got it, wanna make sure I have it all done so I can enjoy my winter break next week.” Steve replied before heading to his corner spot.
A small late night rush came and went bringing Vickie back in the café to help ring through and make drinks with Eddie. Once it had died down the crowd thinned out, leaving just the DnD table, Steve, and another student pouring over a book and furiously annotating in another corner spot.
Vickie looked to Eddie, “I think your boy is falling asleep in the café.” She nodded her head in Steve’s direction.
Eddie followed her line of vision from where he was leaning his hip on the counter, it was true the man’s features had softened and his laptop was moving closer and closer to sliding off the leg it was settled on.
“You should go over and wake him up gently.” She raised her eyebrows at him.
He rubbed the back of his neck, “He must be exhausted.” Eddie said introspectively.
Vickie poked his side, “Go on Eddie, wake him up I’ll hold down the fort. For what it’s worth he always sticks around more when you’re here.”
He made to move away from the counter and untangled the meaning of her words, he knew the two got along their impromptu outing proved just that. Eddie rolled his eyes at her, “Guess I’ll go wake him.”
“You go do that Eddie, be gentle.” Vickie teased as he walked past her.
***
Eddie hesitated when he got in front of the other man, in a soft voice he said, “Steve, Stevie? Wake up man.”
And nothing. Not even a stir in movement just steady sleeping breaths.
He hovered his palm over Steve’s shoulder and crouched in front of him, connecting palm to warm, solid, Steve.
“Stevie?” He shook his arm gently.
The other man’s whiskey brown eyes fluttered open, “Sweetheart you fell asleep, might be time to head home.”
Steve made a confused sighing sound, bleary eyes looking at Eddie, he reached out his own fingers and perched them under Eddie’s chin, “s’pretty.”
Eddie blinked owlishly at him, oh, that was unfair.
He let his own hand circle Steve’s wrist, “You up Stevie?” He asked.
The cloud seemed to lift from around Steve’s sleep softened features and he registered holding Eddie’s chin in his hand and slowly pulled away, “m'sorry, must’ve dozed off.”
He pushed up his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
Eddie folded his laptop shut for him and placed it between the arm of the chair and Steve’s thigh, “You okay sweetheart? Maybe time to go home and go to bed, properly?”
Eddie was still crouched in front of him as Steve stretched his arms over his head, “Yeah Eds, didn’t realize I was so tired.” He huffed out a laugh.
Max walked in for her shift, she was supposed to be Vickie’s relief, Eddie’s phone buzzed in his back pocket he took it out discreetly as Steve started gathering his things.
It was from Vickie, ‘walk the boy home! I’ll stay if you take my mid?’
You’re a queen Vick, I don’t deserve you.
‘Of course you don’t, but you have me anyway *heart emoji*’
Eddie surveyed Steve as he fumbled tucking his laptop into his messenger bag, “Can I help you?” Eddie asked quietly.
Steve rubbed his eyes again and put his glasses back in place, “Uh, I’m a mess this is so embarrassing.”
“You’re sleep deprived sweetheart, don’t be embarrassed let me help you, please.” Eddie asked tone gentle like he was coaxing a wild animal.
“Thanks, Eds.” Steve said stepping aside slightly for the help.
Eddie realized what a daze he was in when he allowed Eddie to hold his jacket out for him and tuck his hat on his head, fingers brushing his cheeks as tugged the ear flaps securely over Steve’s, also cute, ears.
Steve shivered at the contact, “Can I walk you home Stevie?” Eddie asked.
Steve’s eyes scanned his face, he was being taken care of, he couldn’t remember the last time someone handled him so tenderly, it made the tricky emotion get caught in his throat as he nodded affirmatively.
Eddie gave him a crooked smile, “Let me grab my coat Sleepy Steve.”
Steve let out a puff of laughter, “nicknames.” He whispered as Eddie smiled properly and made his way to grab his leather coat and buffalo plaid black and white scarf.
Eddie grabbed Steve’s messenger bag as the man began to protest, “Nuh-uh sweetheart we’re getting you and your property home safely.”
Steve checked his phone for the time and any missed messages, Eddie held his hand out for it, Steve handed it over as Eddie input his contact information and handed it back to Steve.
“Think this might make us friends?” Eddie asked as they walked out the café together into the cold night air, helping Steve come back to some of his senses.
He chuckled to himself, “Yeah think we’re in that realm, thanks Eddie, didn’t realize how tired I really was.”
“No need for apologies, you just need to take better care of yourself Stevie.” Eddie said tone chiding but still gentle.
The amount of sweethearts, and Stevie’s gifted so freely to him in the course of this interaction made something warm claw it’s way into his chest. It was killing him to be handled in this manner.
Steve didn’t know when they got to his building, but Eddie broke his thoughts, “Which one is you?”
Steve walked up to the entrance, “This one, um my keys…” He patted his pockets then pointed to the messenger bag Eddie was holding.
Eddie went through the front pocket procuring Steve’s keys and unlocking his entryway, “You good or you want me to walk you up.”
Steve let himself be selfish for a moment, “walk me up.” He said barely above a whisper, like a secret being shared.
Eddie looked over his face, his own eyes softening at the neediness Steve was showing him, “Okay sweetheart let’s get you nice and comfy upstairs, lead the way?”
Steve made his way up the two flights, Eddie trailing behind him, and handing him his keys to unlock his apartment.
They stepped into his home together, Eddie took it in as he set down Steve’s bag, “Didn’t take you as a plant daddy but it does really fit the image.”
Steve laughed lightly as he made to bend down and struggled to pull off his boots, Eddie lead him to his couch, “Sit down.”
Steve did as he was told, Eddie couldn’t help himself the words escaped his mouth before he could hold them back, “Good boy.”
Steve locked eyes with him as Eddie knelt in front of him and eased off his boots. Eddie’s voice like a salve on his overworked brain. Steve let out a shaky breath, good boy, his mind replayed the words.
Eddie’s thumb rubbed against the knobby bone of his ankle. “Such good listening sweetheart.”
Steve’s hands moved forward and cupped Eddie’s face, “Can I kiss you?”
Eddie smiled at him, “Do you like when I tell you what to do Stevie?” He asked back before answering.
“Yes.” Steve ground out.
Eddie leaned in the vee between Steve’s knees and up into his space, he kissed his cheek in a chaste manner, “Then sweetheart ask to kiss me when you’re not almost falling over with exhaustion.”
Steve whined in the back of his throat, tried to tamper down the rejection.
Eddie stood above him and touched his face, “This isn’t because I don’t want you. I just want to know you want this when you aren’t falling asleep standing up, understand?”
Steve nodded.
“No, be good and answer me, with your words.” Eddie’s voice had an edge to it that made Steve pay attention.
“Yes Eddie, you want me too. I’ll ask when I’m not falling asleep.” Steve answered shakily.
Eddie stroked his thumb along Steve’s cheek bone, connected the dots of his freckles under the pad of his finger, he was testing the limits here, playing with fire.
His thumb brushed Steve’s bottom lip, as Steve opened his mouth to gently hold it between his teeth and look up at Eddie.
Eddie let out a hitching breath as Steve released his thumb and swiftly kissed the finger before leaning back.
The apartment was buzzing with energy of the exchange, “Sweetheart get some rest.” Eddie’s voice sounded wrecked.
“Yes Eddie, good night.” Steve answered.
Eddie walked to the door, “You’re gonna be a handful aren’t you?” He said without turning around.
Steve stood from his couch and started pulling his shirt over his head, “Only if you’ll let me.”
It took every ounce of Eddie’s control to turn the doorknob, “Find me after you’ve had a good nights sleep Stevie.” He said as he made his way out.
A text came through on his phone,
I’ll let you sweetheart, I like a handful, and you listen so well.
Steve stood alone in his living room semi-hard and nowhere near tired anymore.
