Amelia had had a rough day. From performing a surgery to extend a patient’s life expectancy and potentially return his eyesight to finding out about April and Jackson’s baby, it had been a long day.
As soon as her day was finally finished and she had no more patients or obligations for the day, she retreated to the chapel in the hospital. Entering the room, the first thing to pull her attention was the table full of candles, all burning brightly in the dimmed room. Smile pulling at the corners of her mouth, she moved to sit in one of the pews. Taking a deep breath, the brunette forced herself to relax.
As Amelia sat staring at the candles, she heard the door to the chapel open and light footsteps making their way over to where she was seated. It wasn’t until she realised that it was Evie that she relaxed, having unconsciously tensed her body. Leaning over, she laid her head on the blonde’s shoulder.
“Hey Amy,” said the woman quietly. Amelia mumbled back a greeting. The blonde draped an arm around the shorter brunette, turning her head to press a kiss to the brunette’s head. “Want to talk about it?”
There was a moment of silence and Evie sat patiently waiting for an answer. A minute later, Amelia began, voice trembling, “My baby lived for 43 minutes.”
The blonde waited to see if she would continue, but upon no further words from the brunette, she murmured, “Your unicorn baby.”
“My unicorn baby.” Amelia's voice was thick with sadness, eyes shining as tears filled them.
The pair stayed sat in silence for several more minutes before Evie broke it. “Let's go home,” she suggested gently. “We can cuddle and look at pictures of him if you want.”
“I--” Amelia stuttered, “I’d really like that.”
“C’mon then.” Evie took the brunette’s hand and stood, waiting for her to join her before leading them out of the chapel and to the changing rooms where the blonde waited for Amelia to change out of her scrubs and back into her regular clothes.
As they were leaving the hospital, Amelia called out for Evie’s attention. “Evie.”
“Yeah, Amy?”
“Thank you.”
“Of course.”
Evie smiled at Amelia, holding her arms out for the brunette. Complying with the silent offer, Amelia returned the smile and moved to embrace the blonde, arms winding around her waist as the other woman’s arms went around her shoulders. Leaning down, Evie pressed a series of kisses across the brunette’s face, starting at her forehead and trailing them down her nose before gently capturing her lips in a kiss.
Pulling away, Amelia’s answering smile was radiant as the two continued their short journey to the car.
“Amelia?”
“Yeah?”
“Is that my sweater?”
