Work Text:

It was a late night, Anne, Sasha and Marcy were hanging out at a sleepover and were talking excitedly.

“Noo Anne! I’m the main character of the group, I’m the popular girl that everyone loves, with my two best friends in a coming of age t.v. show! Not in a ‘fantasy comedy’ t.v. show about some other world.” Sasha exclaimed, with a little bit of bitterness in her words.

“Sasha, no. I’m obviously the main character, I’m the loner outcast with only a few friends and-“ She yawned “and this is a show about how I get more confidence and blossom into the best version of myself!” Marcy answered back, getting more tired by the second.

Anne then said something and Sasha argued with her, but Marcy had began to zone out and wasn’t too focused on the conversation anymore.

“-rcy?”

“-ello?”

“-rth t- -arcy!”

Marcy’s eyes began to close, and she felt her head lowering. But before she could finally fall into dreamland, she saw a pair of tan hands infront of her face.

“Are you there Marbles?” Anne said, a hint of fear in her voice.

“Dude let her rest jeez..” Sasha bickered. Sounding way angrier than before.

“Ahh! Sorry sorry! I promise I’m still listening. I’m just resting my eyes, you don’t need to worry about me.” Marcy reassured her friends, giving a smile to really play the part.

“Uhmmm.. alright, but I don’t believe you for one second Mar-Mar.” The blonde retaliated.

“Good, you’re okay! So as I was saying…” Anne continued on, as Marcy began to see black spots hoarding her vision. She eventually fell into a deep sleep.

——————————♡——————————

The lightning outside rumbled as the sounds of rain hitting the hard ground echoed throughout the room. Anne Boonchuy and Sasha Waybright were about to face off in a battle against their friend, or well- not their friend but some old newts in their friends body? It was hard to explain.

The two girls definitely did not think this is how their mission to get their friend would have gone but, here they were.

“What are you gonna do? Just stand there? Pathetic.” Their not-friend said, as she began to swing a flaming scythe towards the duo.

Anne rolled out of the way while Sasha tried to block the attack with one of her swords, which didn’t go well, the flames went right through it.

But before their not-friend could hit Sasha, she quickly jumped back, the scythe just barely missed her chest.

Anne then rushed in and tackled the not-friend to the ground, earning a yelp from them.

“Give us our friend back or else!” Anne shouted, so much anger in her voice.

“Or else what? You’re not very good at acting on your threats, heart.” Their not-friend smirked, and Anne faltered, giving them the perfect chance to push her off them.

Anne tumbled but quickly got up, turning around to fight again. She decided, this time she’d be more gentle because let’s be honest, she doesn’t want to harm Marcy’s body in any way.

“Sash! Hold her still, I have an idea.” Anne exclaimed, Sasha obliged and slid past her not-friend, grabbing their arms and putting them behind their back.

“You two are imbeciles! Nothing stops The Core!!” The.. Core? shouted.. weird name, but anyway!

“Oh yeah? Nothing stops ‘The Core’?” Anne responded while attempting to rip the helmet off of their friends head, struggling against The Core’s attempts to free their arms from Sasha’s grip.

After minutes of shouting, insults and probably getting a few bruises on her shins, Anne got the helmet off of Marcy.

All of the eyes on the helmet dimmed and shut off while Marcy’s head lay limp, leaning into Sasha.

“Mars..” Sasha whispered in an attempt to wake her up. “Mars c’mon, you gotta wake up so we can go home and get you to a hospital..-“

Minutes later Marcy’s eyes opened, to the dismay of Anne and Sasha, they had an orange tint to them.

“You think you can defeat me that easily? You incompetent fools!” Not-Marcy? The Core!? shouted.

They grabbed one of Sasha’s swords and in a split second had-

“Marcy, NO!” Sasha heard Anne’s scream, frantic footsteps soon following as Marcy Wu dropped to the ground.. Sasha couldn’t bear to see the scene before her eyes.

“Mar- Marcy- no. No you’ll be okay. Just keep your eyes open.” Sasha said in a hurry, finally snapping out of her trance and helping her childhood friend.

The orange tint in Marcy’s eyes faded and she looked unfocused and confused.

“Sash?.. Anne?.. You there?” Her eyelids began to droop, and her skin paled.

“Yes, yes we’re here Marcy! You just gotta stay awake okay??”

“Okay..”

Sasha then noticed, her pink sword had been impaled through Marcy’s chest, so much blood coming from the almost healed wound that had been there from Andrias.

Shit. Shit.. no. No. Shit shit shit shit shit shit shit-

This isn’t happening. This CAN’T be happening, they had almost gotten Marcy back-

Marcy coughed, blood spluttering from her mouth. “I love you guys.. I really do.”

“Marbles- w-we know, you don’t have to speak, save your energy, please!” Anne had stuttered out, this was serious.

“Fuck- uh- Anne, talk to her about something, keep her listening to you! Make sure she’s listening too!” Sasha managed to get out, while laying Marcy down on her legs. Sasha then her cape over Marcy’s wound, feeling sick from looking at it.

“M-Marcy- do you remember when- when we first met, and- and we were at the beach, protecting your- your castle! hanging out with eachother, that was- was one of my favorite memories with you.. and-“ Anne started sobbing even more just thinking about days with Marcy.

Sasha looked into Marcy’s eyes, they looked so dark, the light in them disappearing at a rapid pace.

“And- and you remember when we- Marcy? Marcy?” Sasha made sure Marcy was listening, putting a strand of hair behind her ear and she slowly nodded.

“Remember the Battle of the Bands? And how we fought, but in the end we- we ended up singing together l-like the old times! It’s proof h-how we’re meant to be with eacho- eachother forever..” Sasha sobbed too, feeling so helpless and resenting herself for letting this happen.

Sasha and Anne continued in a cycle of each telling a story from their adventures in Amphibia, until they checked on Marcy for a sixth time.

Anne was frantically asking Marcy if she was awake and listening after realizing Marcy’s eyes had been closed for a while.

Anne lifted Marcy’s head and checked for a heartbeat that was just barely there.

“…I-I promise I’m still l-listening… I’m just- just resting.. my eyes…” Marcy coughed out.

Sasha could tell she was tired, her voice was shallow and hoarse. She cried harder, looking away to gather herself.

“Anne..” she spoke through tears.

“S-sash?” Anne responded.

“We-.. we gotta let her go.”

“No. NO Sash pl-plea..” she cried, after a minute she nodded.

“Hey.. Mar-Mar?” Sasha sniffled.

“Wh.. yes Sashy?” Marcy opened her eyes slightly to look up at Sasha.

“Are-“ Sasha took a deep breath. “Are you tired?”

Marcy didn’t respond for a moment, making Anne’s heart skip a beat.

“Y-yeah.. a little.. I’m sorry.”

“Th-that’s okay Marce.. you can go to sleep, we’ll w-wake you up when we’re home, okay?” Sasha stuttered near the end, knowing they wouldn’t be waking Marcy up.

“…Thank you.. I- I love you b-both so much Sashy, Anna Banana..”

Marcy coughed out blood, more and more trickling down her chin.

It had been 5 years since the incident, Anne and Sasha were both 18 now. They walked hand in hand to the local graveyard.

Stopping by a small but well kept grave they placed some white flowers beside it.

“Happy birthday, Mar-Mar..” Anne spoke quietly and smiled, somberly.

Sasha had a small cupcake in her hands, red velvet with ube frosting, Marcy’s favorite. It had a candle in the middle, she lit it.

“Happy birthday.” Sasha and Anne blew out the candle, holding back tears.

Even after all these years it was still hard for the two to accept their Marcy was gone.
