dancing in the kitchen

Summary:

Just two people, a familiar song, and a slow dance in the space where a table will someday go.

Notes:

This is just a fluffy little piece that popped into my head when I listened to the song, dancing in the kitchen by LANY.

Work Text:

Jungkook punched in the code for the door, relieved to be home again. Qatar was nice, but it had been a full schedule with minimal rest. The moment he opened the door, he heard it – music, playing softly. He smiled as he shut the door behind him.

Still smiling, he set his blue bag on the floor and slipped out of his shoes into his slippers. He padded down the hallway into the living room and came to a stop at the opening of the kitchen and grinned at the sight in front of him.

Jimin was at the kitchen sink, humming and swaying along to the music from his phone, nestled into the speaker dock, as he washed dishes. Jungkook folded his arms across his chest, his heart doing that familiar flutter, the one that came every time he caught Jimin like this.

He listened to Jimin humming as he rinsed a cup and set it on the drying mat. He watched, falling a little more in love with every second that passed, until Jimin's humming turned to singing.

Unable to hold himself back any longer, he pushed off the door frame. Jimin was too absorbed in his washing and singing to notice. He crossed the kitchen and wrapped his arms around Jimin's waist, resting his chin on Jimin's shoulder.

"Jimin-ssi," he murmured into his ear.

"Jungkook-ssi," Jimin countered playfully, leaning back into him, still swaying to the music as he rinsed the plate he'd been washing.

He laughed at that. He leaned to the side and pressed a kiss to Jimin's cheek before resting his chin on his shoulder again.

He waited patiently, letting himself be swayed while Jimin finished the dishes, eyes falling shut as Jimin sang softly along to Off My Face by Justin Bieber. The moment he heard the water turn off; he opened his eyes, lifted his head from Jimin's shoulder, and spun him around. Jimin giggled, that soft, helpless sound, and was still laughing as Jungkook took his hand, his other arm wrapping around Jimin's waist.

Jimin smiled his favorite smile up at him, eyes disappearing into crescents as Jungkook danced them back from the sink into the open space where a kitchen table would someday go.

"Do you remember when we danced like this for the first time?" Jungkook asked, even though he knew Jimin did.

Jimin hummed. "You were so flustered."

"I was not," he protested.

"Whatever you need to tell yourself, baby." Jimin teased.

Jungkook clicked his tongue and rolled his eyes, but who was he kidding. He'd been beyond flustered that day at their 5th Muster: Magic Shop, when Jimin had simply started dancing with him in front of everyone like it was nothing.

"It was cute," Jimin grinned up at him.

Smiling at the memory and at Jimin, always at Jimin, he took his hand from Jimin's lower back and spun him out, Jimin's arm extending wide, before pulling him back into a turn. Jimin laughed all the while. His nose scrunched with how hard he was smiling. He had missed Jimin, even though they had only been apart for a few days. He leaned down and pressed his lips to Jimin's.

"I missed you," he said, pressing a kiss between each word.

"I missed you too," Jimin whispered against his lips.

He leaned back, thinking about how the last time they'd danced like this, he'd been Jimin's height. Now he was taller and he'd always loved that, loved Jimin tucked under his chin as they slowly danced to the next song on Jimin's playlist, 17 by Pink Sweat$. He began to sing along quietly.

"So, promise you'll never change, and I'll always be the same."

Jimin's arms tightened around him. He kept singing, and when he knew the line was coming, he lifted his cheek from Jimin's hair and tipped his face up making sure their eyes met before he sang:

"I can see a thousand years when I'm looking in your eyes."

He watched Jimin's eyes glisten and wiped a stray tear away as they danced in their small circle. It was always like this with Jimin, perfect in a way that felt almost unfair. He could have nothing else in the world and, as long as he had Jimin, he would be okay.

He could spend a thousand nights just like this one. He wanted to always end up here dancing in the kitchen with Jimin.
