Chapter 1: Unexpected

Chapter Text

"Who's that?" Tony spoke. The one person you'd hoped remembered you. You were tired, you needed a hell of a recharge, and the fact that Tony didn't remember you hurt.

The flight from Seoul wasn't fun. There was a heavy set man who had sat next to you. He took up half of your seat and you were too damn nice to ask to change seats. All the flight attendants already looked so on edge. You couldn't drink or eat anything because of a stupid specialized diet required to keep you properly functional. I just want to properly eat and relax before I do anything that takes more energy than its worth.

"It's me, Tony. Your niece, [y/n][l/n]."

Tony stared for a moment. Your smile never faltering. He hadn't registered the name you'd given yourself. Of course, he shipped you to Dr. Cho before you were complete.

"I know, I think you need to hear from my mom," you pulled out the most advanced phone anyone in the room had seen. "Hi, mama. Yeah, Uncle Tony is here and needs a bit of help remembering why you dropped me off." You nodded a few times into the silence while Dr. Cho caught up. She chortled and asked for Tony. You held out the phone for him to take. He stared at the phone in your hand and took it quickly like it was a piece of bread and he hadn't eaten for weeks.

You smiled to everyone else in the room, whom had all stood shocked still since you entered. You knew them all, whether it be from their file or the news. Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, Sam Wilson, the Maximoff twins, Vision, and Thor. You took a big breath before starting:

"Hello, my name is [y/n][l/n]. I'm Stark's niece and I'll be taking over the newly opened secretary position. I hope you will be kind to me and we can be allies." You ended your introduction with a quick bow.

Tony had finished talking on the phone and was handing it back to you, already on the home screen. Well, not like I wanted to have a pleasant hello. But ok. Tony was rubbing his hands over his face until they rested on his forehead, ruining his perfectly manicured hair. You waited. That's a lot of what you were used to. You waited or learned, waited to learn, waited and learned, etc. He finally made eye contact with you and sighed.

"Some one care to explain?" Clint looked fairly unaffected by the news but his heart rate was fairly strange for someone who looked as he did.

"Explanations later. [y/n], I need to see you in my lab-"

"Tony, maybe I should give her a physical before that." Dr. Banner interrupted Tony's command. Tony have in a side glance. It had no malice or anger, just exhaustion. It was only like 10 am. He should be fine.

"You are right, my dear, but she has some robotic joints that need checking on. So, come along," Tony gestured to the elevator already walking fairly fast. With a skip in your step and a smile on your face, you practically ran to the elevator. Dr. Banner took his time but as soon as he entered the elevator left.

"Banner, She doesn't need a physical." Tony blurts into the silence.

Dr. Banner looks at you concerned and at the back of Tony's head. "Of course she does. She's new to the team and that me-"

"She's not human," he sighed staring at the closed doors of the elevator. "She's my first attempt at an advanced AI."

Banner was speechless. He stared at you. You smiled. You were used to this too. Dr. Cho would often impress her higher-ups with you, so long as they didn't touch or agitate you. There was that one time, but we don't talk about that because he had it coming.

Tony continued to explain you to Dr. Banner. "Brucey, I know this is a lot to take in," the elevator stopped and we stepped out. Tony pointed to a capsule scanner and you stepped in. "I was young and I wanted a maid. Someone to learn my mannerisms and how things worked. She had basic intelligence programming. She had basic emotions, a fairly high level of intelligence, plenty of room to learn, she was amazing. I sent the programming to Cho and-" He started the scan and pointed to you- "she was made. Sadly, when she was made her birth was a little too sudden and she was scared. So, she stayed in Seoul to adapt to living."

"What is she suddenly doing here?" Bruce asked. He was looking at all of your statistics and everything you'd learned. All conveniently plastered on the glass surrounding you. Once again, waiting for the scan to be over.

"Cho said that as soon as she was ready, she would leave to come home. This is home to her, as it always has been, though this is her first time here since her original program creation."

"What's all this?" Dr. Banner pointed at some of your features. He was fairly curious. You guessed that's what made him such a great scientist and doctor.

"Those are the programmed and learned 'features,' she's picked up. That's amazing what she's learned. Look here," he pointed at skills. "When I originally programmed her, she had the mobile ability of a fifth grader and basic self defense. Cho would never add half the things here. And this," he pointed at your intel. "She was originally made out to have the intelligence of a high school graduate and she has easily surpassed most world renowned college grads."

"She's impressive, to say the least, but when did you make her? It took how long for her to learn everything she's learned?" Bruce infers.

*ping*

Weeks passed and no one found out. Yeah, they gave you odd looks here or there but what can you do. They offer you pizza but you have a set diet to keep your self properly energized. It was easy to pass off as a need to stay in shape for health reasons. You can't stay up too late or you "pass out" from a failure to properly sleep and recharge, usually passed off as "sorry I'm 5", "I need my beauty rest, obviously", or "sorry I'm a grandma." Tony did evidently tell Pepper. The only person that might have killed him if he hadn't told her about a kinda sorta daughter.

"Hey, [y/n]."

You looked up at the voice calling to you. It was Bucky. Strange enough, it was Bucky in a pair of gaudy Hawaiian print swim shorts and a grey muscle shirt. You weren't one to ignore beauty but it was slightly odd considering he was in the main den. He looked at you through the door that connected the elevators to the den.

"Howdy."

"So. Why are you still here? Tony sent out a mass email about having the week off for the holiday." Bucky rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. He was becoming his own self again. Maybe not who he was but he's not scared to talk or scared of hurting people as much.

"I guess..." How do you tell a super soldier that you aren't a normal secretary? "I missed that email. I'm just finishing this bit I forgot and heading back to my apartment." You give a flippant wave of the hand and gently laugh it off. Or hope it was gentle. Maybe it was forced. He began to eye you suspiciously, as it happens more often than not.

"Well, since you live in the tower, it's be rude not to invite or tell you about the party on the roof." Your eyes widened some with the news. Wow Tony, rude. "Yeah, its just the team and a few agents. It's the rooftop pool and, if you bring food, you honestly can't be turned away."

It seemed intriguing. You had accustomed yourself to rain and underwater situations, as the time called for them. So swimming wouldn't be an issue. The problem would be finding the right thing to wear. You have a "scar" where your main motor circuitry opened, running horizontally across your belly button. You could always just tan and lounge about. It was a party, swimming wasn't necessary. "You know what, Buck? That sounds amazing. See you there in a bit."

He smiled and you winked as the elevator door closed to take him up to the roof.
