Work Text:

Midori had been tending to the vegetables that grow in the garden by the school when someone had sneaked up behind him. “Ah, Takamine-Sama. I thought I’d find you here.” The sudden appearance of the other person surprised Midori, and he dropped the tomatoes he had previously been picking. “Ah! Master Artist!! I didn’t notice you there!”

He stands up quickly and brushes the dirt off his clothes. “What are you doing here?” He inquires. “Well, you see, the Young Master demanded I go out and spend some time with a friend, I suppose he noticed I have been rather anxious as of late.” The blue haired boy states.

“Oh! Well, I am honored you see me as a friend, I feel kind of embarrassed, really.” Spits out Midori, looking a little flushed. “How so?” “Ah, well, you could’ve chosen Tenshouin-Senpai or Hibiki-Senpai, I’m sure you’re closer with them than you are to me…” The other boy suddenly takes Midori’s hands in his.

“Sure, I do consider them some of my closest companions, but neither of them are as soothing to be around as you. You’re kind and soft-spoken, it’s honestly quite refreshing to spend time with you.”

Ah. Midori feels his heart skip a beat or two as he lets those words sink in. Ohhh. Yep. Definitely something going on in there. He notices his cheeks heat up several degrees and is sure he’s as red as the tomatoes he had dropped a few minutes prior. The other boy, however, is as calm and composed as a cucumber.

“Ah… I-I’ve got to go…” he stammers, breaking free of the tender hands that were holding his own. Yuzuru is left with the vegetables, unsure of the situation.

His brother was bi, maybe he could ask him about the feelings he’s been having. He walks to the grocery store his family owns and taps his brother on the shoulder. “Oh, Midori. What do you need?” He asks. “Um.. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions. In private.” He stammers. “Sure… come on in.” He walks over to the break room and closes the door behind him. “So what is it? Are you having problems with school?” His brother says with a worried look on his face. “No! Nothing of that sort! Um. I was just…” Midori looks off to the side and grips the hem of his shirt tightly. “Um… how did you realize you liked boys?” Silence.

His brother let out an awkward cough. “Oh. Well… first off, I’m very glad you trust me with this kind of stuff, and I’m proud to call you my brother no matter what.” “Ummm. Ok.” “Secondly, I don’t really remember *how* exactly it happened, it really just… did. You know? I just kind of felt… right. There was a boy I suppose I had my eye on at the time, but we never hit it off.” “I see…” said Midori. “Well you like a boy, I presume?” Midori nodded his head. “I think so, at least. I just need some help making sure that’s what I’m feeling.”

“Well, have you tried imagining yourself with him?” His brother asked. “What do you mean?” “See how you feel after thinking about holding his hand or kissing him or whatever. That should do the trick.” Midori closed his eyes. He pictured Yuzuru gently slotting his hand in his own, and felt a light blush dust his cheeks.

“…” Midori opened his eyes and found his brother standing in front of him with his arms crossed and a knowing smile on his face. “So? How do you feel about him?” “I think… I need to try again…” he closed his eyes once more, this time imagining his friend with whom he has Very Platonic feelings for swiping his thumb across his bottom lip. That was all it took to have Midori red as the bow of one of his favourite mascots.

“So I take it you know now.” Midori nods his head shyly. “Thanks for your help.” He receives a pat on the back. “Anytime.”

———————————

Midori rushes back to the school, hoping to find Yuzuru still there. He sees Mao, and asks if he knows where his friend is. “Hmm, I’m pretty sure I saw him in the library not too long ago.” He replies. “Thank you, Isara-Senpai!” He says as he dashes towards the library.

Midori’s in luck, he spots a familiar shade of blue amongst the books. He takes a moment to catch his breath and walks up to him. “Master Artist,” he says, catching said boy’s attention. “I’m sorry for running away earlier.” Yuzuru slips the book he was holding back into its place in the shelf. “Oh, Takamine-Sama. It’s no problem, I apologize if I frightened you with my sudden praise. I know you’re a little keen about that sort of thing.”

Midori carefully takes the one of the boy’s hands and closes both of his around it. “This might be sudden, but I also enjoy being with you… Fushimi-Senpai…” he manages to spit out. “You inspire me with your graceful smile and you’re always so gentle… I really am glad to be your friend.” he finally looks up and sees something he thinks is worthy of being the 8th world wonder.

Yuzuru’s calm exterior had seemingly vanished, leaving instead a warm pink flush spread across his cheeks and wearing a flustered expression. “O-oh.” He mumbles. He desperately wants to cover his face with his hands, but being unable to do so, he turns his head to the side.

“I… never expected you to…” he lets out a deep breath. “I really hope this isn’t too forward, and I haven’t misconstrued your words, but would you like to go on a date with me, Takamine-Sama?” Now it was his turn to become all warm and mushy. He hadn’t thought this far ahead.

“Oh. Um. Yes, I would like that. Ah, I…” Midori sets Yuzuru’s hand free in favour of reaching to card his fingers through his blue hair, though stopping just before. “May I?” He requests. Yuzuru guides Midori’s hand down, accepting. Now the taller boy had his hand sitting on the back of Yuzuru’s head, his hand still atop his.

Midori receives the softest smile he thinks he’s ever had the pleasure of seeing. “How about we stay here?” Yuzuru suggests. “That sounds good to me.” The two spend the rest of the afternoon sitting in a far corner of the library, holding hands. It isn’t much, but to them, it means the world.

Yuzuru brings Midori’s hand up to his lips, leaving a small peck on the back of it. “I like you. I assume you feel the same way.” Midori is left flustered, gripping the side of the chair he’s sitting in. He can only nod his head. There are many words left unsaid, but not to worry, as they have plenty of time in the future to say them.
