Chapter 1: Happy ending

Chapter Text

Nicole was drawing circles on Waverly's thigh with her finger, it was something she always did when she was nervous, as if touching her girlfriend was the only thing that could calm her down.

Instinctively, the brunette sitting next to her in the car took her hand in her and squeezed it slightly.

“It’s going to work,” Waverly said, moving her left hand to the back of the redhead’s neck to play with the short hair there “I don’t want to be bad luck, but I can feel it, it’s going to work”

Nicole knew this was going to work eventually, but it was the third time they were on their way to the clinic in order to put a baby into Waverly’s body.

They didn't tell anyone about their many attempts to have a baby, the IVF process is long and they didn't want to put everyone through the waiting and disappointment especially now that it had already failed two times. They also didn't want it to be bad luck. But mostly because they wanted it to be a surprise for their friends and family.

On their first try, they were so excited that they almost celebrated a pregnancy that night. When the brunette took a test and it came back negative a few weeks later, both girls were extremely disappointed, but they remained hopeful.

Keep manifesting that they will have a baby.

The second time around, they decided not to get their hopes up and let nature, or in this case, science, do its job.

The second test result was given by the doctor herself, negative.

Waverly cried herself to sleep that night, cradled in Nicole's arms as much as she could, the redhead holding back her own tears until the brunette fell asleep.

 They will have a baby.

They knew it wasn't going to be easy. Waverly had read so many stories from people in their exact situation that she knew it wasn't going to work out the first time.

During their six-year relationship, Nicole and Waverly talked about having a baby for more than four years.

At first they were too young, then when they moved into their first apartment it was too small to accommodate a baby, then they were too busy, both starting to build their careers.

For over two years now, Nicole's company has been growing with the help of her partner/best friend/step sister, Wynonna, Waverly's sister.

They managed to turn a drunken conversation about creating their own beer one day into a huge local organic beer production company, partnering with local artisans for all stages of production.

It turns out that it's working very well as they now sell their beer all over the country. This allowed Nicole and Waverly to buy their first home a year ago.

Waverly was a full-time writer and had already published two best-selling books. Basically, all they needed to have a perfect life was a baby to fill the house and their hearts.

Nicole and Waverly were so madly in love from day one, that creating a life together and raising a human being that was a mix of the two was their ultimate goal.

Nicole wanted a little brunette who looked exactly like Waverly, and Waverly dreamed of having a little redhead.

They chose a tall redheaded donor, just to increase the chances of having a baby that looks like both of them.

Waverly rests her head on Nicole's shoulder, the redhead brings their joined hands to her lips to give the soft skin of her hand a little kiss.

"This is going to work. And if not this time, it will be the next, you'll be a mom Waves, I promise."

Waverly's smile lights up, and the creases of joy around her eyes appear, "WE are going to be moms. We're going to be so awesome, and fun, and you're going to be the mean one because one of us has to be," she jokes, knowing full well that there was no mean bone in Nicole's body, if one of them is going to be the bossy mom she knows it's going to be her.

"You know I won't be able to refuse anything to a mini you, I mean you're already the prettiest little thing the earth has ever made, how am I supposed to fight an even tinier version"

"hey! I'm not that little" Waverly pretended to protest as she took her head off Nicole's shoulder,

"Yes, you can try to convince yourself of that baby," she said with a laugh.

When they arrive for their appointment, Dr. Stevens welcomes them into her office.

"Hello ladies, how are you doing today?" she asks as she gestures for them to sit down,

"Good, thank you, we're...optimistic, I feel like today is going to be a good day" Waverly says, not getting her hopes up too high, she just wants to show the positive.

"Well, that's good spirit, did you take the herbal medicine I prescribed?"

"Every day, doctor," she nods proudly, holding Nicole's hand more firmly.

"perfect, well then, if you're ready, shall we?" the doctor said, leading them into the next room, telling Waverly to change and go lie down on the table and wait for her when she'll be ready.

Once undressed, Waverly put on the scrubs and sat down, helped by Nicole who kissed her temple, while the doctor prepared her equipment.

"It's going to work, baby, I can feel it," Nicole whispers in the hollow of her ear, Waverly nods, bringing Nicole's hand to her lips to kiss her gently.

"I love you."

"I love you more" Nicole always told her.

They usually argue about who loves more, but there's no time for that now, Waverly glanced at her girlfriend, silently uttering the words "I love you more, more" and Nicole just giggled, the doctor's voice bringing them back to the moment.

"Okay Waverly, you know the process, it's going to be a little painful but you have to stay still for it to work properly okay? ready?"

Waverly nods and squeezes Nicole's hand as the needle enters her body, both look at the monitors next to Dr. Stevens, clearly showing the needle entering the eggs.

“and we’re in” The lady said, removing the needle and cleaning Waverly who looked at her girlfriend who instantly gave her a kiss, excited to have tried again, their futures now in the hands of science.

"Remember, don't exercise too much this week, I recommend complete rest, no stress," she points to Nicole, as if she's the one who's going to make sure her girlfriend doesn't get stressed, but Nicole nods, taking her job very seriously.

"And I'll see you in two weeks for the blood test. Please Waverly don't take a pregnancy test from the drugstore, even if you're late on your period, we'll have a reliable one in just two weeks, okay?". The doctor was used to people having positive pregnancy results and being so disappointed when the blood test result was negative, she knew how terrible it was to go from imagining a future life, to losing all hope. And she knew Nicole and Waverly already suffered from it.

"Yes, thank you doctor, we’ll see you in two weeks."

When they left the clinic, Waverly wanted them to go get ice cream to celebrate, and even though the ice cream store was a five minute walk away, Nicole refused to let the brunette walk, she needed to sit down, lay down and rest. But she was still going to give the brunette what she wanted, because she couldn't deny her anything.

As they drove out of the clinic parking lot, Nicole headed for the store, both smiling widely, thinking that there might be a future baby in Waverly's body right now. Both of them didn't say anything, not wanting to jinx anything, but still clearly thinking about their possible future life as a family.

Their hands meet on the armrest between them, Waverly gently rubbing her belly with her other hand, thinking about the maybe life inside. Manifesting right?

Nicole orders their ice cream at the drive-through, Vanilla for Waverly, her favorite, and chocolate chip for herself.

"Here you go, vanilla ice cream for my love," Nicole said as she handed her cone to the brunette, then thanked the girl before taking hers and heading back out.

"So, now that we have the day to ourselves, what do you want to do?" Nicole said, licking the ice cream that was starting to melt on her cone,

"She recommended I rest, so why don't we go home, put on a movie, elevate my legs, and cuddle until tonight when you’ll make us dinner" she smiles, and Nicole giggles.

"okay okay, any requests from pregnant women already?" she nodded, looking at her girlfriend with attentive eyes.

"mmm I'm thinking, cauliflower gratin" Waverly chuckles knowing that Nicole never minded making them dinner, she loved to cook, and loved feeding Waverly even more.

"Anything for my baby," Nicole said, leaning in a little toward Waverly, the brunette leaning in as well, giving her a quick kiss at the red light, a quick kiss that turned into a longer kiss, them not noticing the light turned green eventually, too busy tasting the other's ice cream on the other's lips.

A honk of the horn interrupted them and brought them out of their kiss. They both laughed, Nicole apologizing to the car behind them before hitting the gear pedal.

Within seconds, at that very moment, Waverly turned around to face Nicole, witnessing the worst vision of her entire life, right behind Nicole's beautiful dimpled smile, her soft eyes focused on the road ahead, a sight that Waverly had watched hundreds of times throughout their relationship.

The vision of a truck speeding across their path, not enough time for her to scream, the front of the truck was already hitting their car at full speed, spinning their car around in circles for several yards, before landing on the side of the road.

Nicole's head on the steering wheel, the windows shattered, no sound around them except the car horn, leaving them both unconscious, in a wrecked car covered in blood and broken glass.
