Work Text:

Eve mindlessly twirled her pencil between her fingers, eyes empty and glazed over. This class always felt so much longer than the rest, partly due to the teacher's tendency to ramble, and also her lack of interest in the subject. When the pencil predictably slipped from her grip, clattering loudly against her desk, Eve grimaced and rubbed her nape as she sent apologetic smiles to those who turned to glare at her.

She sighed, resting her chin on her palm as she stared longingly at the outside world through the fingerprint-clouded windows. Why did school have to be so long and boring?

“Amawashi-san, please answer question number fifteen,” their teacher instructed, gesturing towards Aoi with his talking stick. It was only a matter of time until he stabbed someone’s eye out with it.

“Yes sir,” Aoi obeyed, pushing her chair back a bit and standing, back straight with her textbook held in front of her. She answered the question confidently, sitting back down once their teacher thanked her for her answer.

Eve could hear the murmurs of students sitting around Aoi, nothing out of the ordinary.

“To be expected of the class rep.”

“So smart and pretty, I wish I could be like her…”

“She seems so calm and mysterious…I wonder what she’s like outside of school.”

Eve chuckled to herself, staring adoringly at the other girl as she giggled at something Ichina said. Aoi might appear distant and mysterious on the outside—the typical beautiful model student—but inside she was still just like any other dorky sixteen-year-old. If only these people could see her when she hangs out with me.

After what seemed like an eternity, their class finally ended and they were given their fifteen-minute break between periods. Many students practically leapt from their seats and were out the classroom door within mere seconds of the bell ringing, eager to grab a spot in line for the few vending machines their school had.

Eve ran a hand through her blonde locks, her eyes zeroing in on the doodle of two stick figures holding hands that her doe-eyed classmate scribbled in her notebook during one of their recent “study” sessions.

(It had been rather awkward at times, considering Aoi was being closely monitored by an irritable and sleep-deprived Amane, who was determined to make sure Aoi finished her essay before midnight.)

She softly shut her math notebook, grabbing her bag off the ground to put her supplies away before a squealing body barreled into her torso.

“Eveeee!” Aoi beamed, draping herself on the blonde’s frame. She turned her head to glance up at Eve, pouting.  “I missed you.”

Eve laughed, raising an eyebrow. “You saw me today, though?”

Aoi pouted, cheeks puffed out adorably that the blonde itched to poke. “But haven’t gotten to talk to you yet! Anyway, I was wondering if you were free after school to hang—”

“You need to study after school, Aoi,” Amane sighed, ignoring the puppy dog eyes sent her way. “I think you would also benefit from a bit of studying, Kimishima-san.”

Eve threw her head back, letting out a loud and obnoxious laugh. “Haven’t I told you to call me Eve? And don’t worry, I’ve snuck in a bit of studying here and there over the past week, though I probably will look over everything one more time tonight.” She glanced at Aoi who still wore a disappointed pout and had her arms crossed in front of her chest in protest. “How about this; Aoi, if you finish all of your studying quickly, give me a call and I’ll come see you after. Does that sound good?”

Ali’s face immediately brightened as she grinned and nodded eagerly. “YES!!” She wrapped Eve up in a tight hug who only grunted fondly in response, patting her arm. “Oh my gosh, I’m so excited! I’m going to study extra hard today!”

Eve smiled as she watched Amane drag an ecstatic and babbling Aoi over to her desk. The short haired girl turned back to Eve, mouthing ‘look what you’ve done’ with an exasperated huff. Eve smirked, knowing exactly what she was enabling, though she didn’t find reason to stop. She enjoyed seeing Aoi so bright and happy, and if Aoi was happy, so was Eve.

The early evening air bit at Eve’s face as she slowly inhaled, her body relaxing. Next to her, Ichina rambled on about her classes and how some girl named Haruka kept pestering her.

“Ugh! And today when I dropped my pencil near her desk, she grabbed it and was like, ‘I'll give it back for a kiss’ . Unbelievable. I’m this close to breaking into her house and smothering her with a pillow.”

Eve cackled, wrapping Ichina up in a head lock and ruffling her hair. “Wow, my little kohai is so popular .”

“I’m not little!” Ichina whined, squirming in Eve’s grip. “Why do I even tell you things?”

“Cause you love me~”

“NO I DON’T!”

When they finally reached Ichina’s house, she waved goodbye and glanced at her watch. It was a quarter till four, meaning Aoi should have been almost done with her studying. Eve figured she could drop in and check on Aoi’s progress (that is, if Amane didn’t kill her fist).

When she finally arrived at the school, she headed for the library and peaked her head in, surprised to only see Amane staring boredly at her cellphone.

“Hey, where’s Aoi?” Eve asked, approaching the table the other girl was seated at.

Amane looked up, the bored expression never leaving her face. “She went outside with some guy just now.”

Eh?

“Oh, okay. Thanks,” Eve said as she turned to exit the library and go search for her dark haired counterpart.

“Don’t punch him too hard, Aoi won’t like that!” Amane called after her, an mildly amused smile playing at her lips.

After sending the other girl a goofy salute, Aoi sprinted off down the hallways, pushing open the door to the courtyard where she assumed they would be. And sure enough, there stood Aoi, wearing a gentle smile as usual—the same smile Eve had inevitably fallen for—and in front of her was the poor boy she was about to reject. At least, that’s what Eve selfishly hoped would happen.

She crouched behind a bush, attempting to listen in on their conversation.

“A-Amawashi-san, I’ve always admired you and found you extremely beautiful and smart, please go on a date with me!” the boy exclaimed, thrusting forward a white envelope sealed neatly with a red heart sticker.

“I’m sorry, Akira-kun. You’re really sweet, but I’m afraid I already have feelings for someone else,” Aoi replied, smiling guiltily at Akira’s crestfallen expression.

The boy nodded slowly, standing up straight again. “I understand. Thank you for your kindness, Amawashi-san.”

Aoi smiled warmly and waved as the boy walked off, exhaling slowly. Eve took that as her cue to come out from behind the shrub, dusting off her skirt.

“Already have feelings for someone else, huh?” she teased, coming up to stand in front of Aoi.

“Yep,” Aoi replied, smiling wryly. “Why? Are you jealous?”

“And what if I said I was?”

“Then I’d say you have nothing to worry about,” the dark haired girl whispered, stepping nearer to Aoi. “After all, you’re the only one I like.”

“Mmm, is that so?” Eve smirked, tugging Aoi closer by her waist. She leaned in closer, her mouth hovering over Aoi’s. “May I?”

Aoi didn’t even take the time to respond, instead wrapping her arms around Eve’s neck and connecting their lips.

Soon, no matter how into the kids they were, they still needed air to survive and so they were required to pull apart briefly.

“Wow,” Aoi said breathlessly. Eve grinned, smiling down at the flushed girl in front of her.

“Wow, indeed.”
