Of Coats and Capes

Summary:

Rae wakes up one night and accidentally sews his and Caspian's cape and coat together. Fluff ensues.

Notes:

First Fanfiction on here. I have very little clue what I'm doing. Written based on a headcanon I put in the fable smp discord awhile ago. Please note this was written before going back to the stronghold. Hope you enjoy.

Work Text:

Rae pulled the cape off the edge of the bed where it lay twinkling in the moonlight that illuminated the room. It must have fallen off while he twisted around in restless sleep. Another dream memory from ‘mother dearest’, it was one thing to see the results of her actions another to witness them first hand through her eyes. Caspian was still sleeping peacefully and despite his offer that he could always be woken up no matter the reason Rae couldn’t bring himself to wake him. It had been a long few days and it had taken its toll on the duo, the least Rae could offer Caspian was a good night’s sleep after dragging him into the madness that came with being a child of Enderian. Going to spread the cape over Caspian, Rae noticed the tear in the deep purple fabric. Right, an arrow had pierced it while running and in his hurry to get away from the large wave of nighttime mobs it had torn out a chunk. Rae had the piece if he remembered correctly, he’d gone back to retrieve it in the morning, sparkly purple fabric with stars was hard to make especially without his old setup from the previous reset. Checking in the barrels around the room Rae found the piece he was looking for in between the duck hoodie Ghosty refused to admit was his but also refused to get rid of and a piece of navy blue fabric with fluffy white on the other side. Right, Caspian’s jacket wasn’t in much better condition than his own cape. He grabbed that fabric as well along with the coat it belonged to and headed to the study after patting Atlas who had perked up at the movement around the room. Rae kept his sewing stuff with his book binding materials because alot of them overlapped in use, thread and stitching needles being used for both. Flopping down in his chair, sewing supplies spewed on the desk before him he began the mindless task of mending the cape while his mind wondered. Mentally going over the most recent info gained from the latest library he trailed stitch after stitch across the cloth.

Caspian woke up at the lack of a person next to him. Rae must have gotten up first, hopefully not for anything bad although he couldn’t think of anything good that woke you up in the middle of the night. He patted around for the familiar star speckled cloak and when he didn’t find it got up more urgently. If Rae took the cape with him he was probably going somewhere because he normally left it behind for Caspian if he was just going to the study. Glancing around and not seeing his coat he decided to ditch it and hope it wasn’t too cold outside or wherever Rae went. Patting Atlas who had been watching him intently since he had gotten up he left the room, heading towards the front door. He quickly glanced towards the storage room and study on his way out and was glad he did for he spotted a brief flickering light from the end of the hall. Quickly turning and heading into the study he paused in the doorframe. Rae sat calmly in his chair, candle light glowing against his face as he sowed looping stitches into the mound of fabric on his lap.

“Rae,” he called softly.

“Hmmm,” Rae hummed back.

“What are you doing, Love?”

“Sewin’,” Rae mumbled, making a hand gesture to indicate the materials surrounding him, the string twirled through the air as he waved at the objects with the hand holding the sewing needle. Caspian glanced at the fabric in his other hand and instantly recognized the cape in all its sparkly, starry glory, and his jacket? Was Rae sewing the two together? Glancing back at the table where a more awake Rae was trying to rewind the thread that had shot through the air a moment ago he realized that was where his coat actually was. Glancing back to the fabric now discarded in Rae’s lap he smirked.

“So you wanted a piece of me with you at all times huh,” Ghosty grinned from the door.

“Huh,” was all Rae managed to respond as he desperately tried to untangle the string he’d accidentally wrapped around his wrist and all the objects on the table a minute ago.

“Sewing a piece of my coat to your cape,” Caspian beamed brighter. Rae glanced down quickly and realized his mistake within a second. The blue and fluffy fabric was sewn in place of the purple. Caspian was still looking smug in the door frame or well trying to as his amusement betrayed him.

Do not say you were not thinking do not say you weren’t thinking

Caspian would never let him live it down and would insist he go back to bed with the whole you’re not sleeping enough lecture. He’d probably throw in some compliment about brains or being pretty and relate it to sleep. Then Rae would be even more flustered than he was already and would stupidly agree because he couldn’t think straight, it wasn’t his fault, he wasn’t straight. So doing the only semi-reasonable thing he could think of he agreed.

“Yes, is that a problem?” He asked as confidential as he could, hoping he wasn’t already too red in the face. Now it was Ghosty’s turn to be flustered.

“No, just- uhh.” Rae went back to sewing with new determination, quickly finishing the sem on his cape and moving to add the cape fabric to the jacket. The cape had a smaller hole but was more stretchy and the coat a large tear but a softer more sturdy material, either way the piece from each fit the gash on the other almost perfectly much to Rae’s delight. Ghosty had taken a seat on the edge of the desk content to just sit while his boyfriend sewed. It was quiet other than the occasional crackle from the candle that filled the room with warm light. The two shared smiles, no words needed. Caspian fiddled with some of the other sewing supplies before ending up braiding strands of colourful strings and ribbons into Rae’s hair as he worked.

Finally both the coat and cape were completed. The edge of the jacket had been patched and extra cape fabric Rae had pulled out was used to make it into a decorative pocket with a silver crescent moon charm as a clasp. The bottom corner that had been ripped away from the cape replaced with the blue and fluffy material and more had been used to just turn it into a trim around the bottom to make it more stylized.

About Two-ish or so Weeks Later (fable time is wack lol)

Ghosty and Rae had gotten split up on teams to check around the stronghold since they were the only two to know what to really expect. As Rae’s group looted the barrels in what he presumed as a storage room he fiddled with the trim on his cape. It had just become a habit at this point to squeeze the soft lining when Caspian wasn’t nearby. It wasn’t as good as holding his hand but it provided some comfort to the scientist. Hopefully he was doing good as well, he probably was, Ghosty was the adventurer after all.

Caspian spun the moon charm around with his thumb and pointer finger as his other fingers drummed on the stars sewn into the fabric. It was force of habit at this point especially without Rae there. He was glad Rae had basically sewn them together all that time ago even if it was most likely unintentional at first.

As both explored they could almost claim they felt each other’s heartbeats through the cloth even as ridiculous as that sounded. Neither cared though, smiling at the little piece of the other they had.
