Work Text:
The warm sunlight streaming through the tinted windows of the van warms his wings, making the soft nest even harder to climb out of. A glint of red in the walls of the nest catches his eye, causing the avian to coo loudly with the realization that Mumbo has added to their shared nest. The discarded suit jacket balanced carefully above it shimmers under the comforting rays of amber, pulling a fond trill from his chest as his wings fluff. The overwhelming fondness for his lovable idiot washes over him, pulling him down into the undercurrents of his instincts. The knowledge that Mumbo would give one of those fond lopsided smiles at his flapping hands and pinning eyes that keep expanding and shrinking only causes his trilling to increase in volume.
Pulling himself out of the nest is one of the most difficult things he has ever done, if Mumbo was here curled around him then the idea of fighting a ravager hoard would have been more appealing than leaving. The smell of roasted almonds and freshly cut ripe fruit pulls him forward into the small kitchen they had built together.
Drifting in through the open door reveals to him the radiant figure of his beloved, the holder of his heart, the one that he would willingly give everything. Mumbo stands in front of him, hair mussed from sleep, staring at a cutting board covered across every possible section of its surface with pieces of apple and melon. The remnants of light from the dying coals of the furnace coupled with the softly streaming rays from the bright star outside cast dancing shadows across the wrinkled white dress shirt clinging to his back. It takes everything the avian has to not immediately start cooing at the wonderful sight in front of him.
Stepping forward softly so as not to disturb the beautiful dream in front of him, Grian slowly winds his arms around Mumbo’s torso, burying his head into his partner’s back in the process. Mumbo immediately turns around, eager to hold him too. Looking up at the soft smile carved into his beloved’s face causes Grian to feel like he’s melting into the floor. He briefly coos loudly at the lanky man in front of him before attempting to plaster himself closer to the warm body wrapped around him.
Breakfast and all of their chores will need to be completed eventually, but standing together in the soft light is all that matters now.
