Work Text:
Not to brag, but Tengen thought he was a pretty good looking guy. He had three wives and could get both men or women to fall for him. Hell, even some of his fellow hashira had looked at him a certain way. Cough, Mitsuri, cough.
But there was one guy, one insurable guy, that he got absolutely nowhere with. Was he not good enough? Should he show off more of his muscles? Perhaps he should request that his uniform shows his chest like Mitsuri’s and Sanemi's? Would that work?
No, Tengen knew the answer to that. Because the guy he was desperately trying to woo didn’t think he was flirting. Somehow. Even though Uzui had made it painfully obvious. So much so that it made himself cringe.
So obvious. So annoying. So cute.
…………….
For the first time flirting, most people would just drop little hints, right? Well not Tengen. He had to make this flashy. So, after begging Ubuyashiki to put them on a mission together, and after begging Shinobu to tell him Giyuu’s favorite food, he was currently making Giyuu’s favorite food.
Giyuu’s favorite food was apparently salmon daikon. Not too shabby, Tengen almost expected something plainer. Huh. It was still a mystery to Tengen why he found Giyuu attractive. His type was usually flashy people, such as himself or his wives.
Oh shit his wives. He knew his wives wouldn’t be mad at him for trying to date another person, but they’d probably want to meet him first. Perhaps he could invite him after the mission?
Tengen made the rest of the salmon daikon pretty quickly. As soon as the sun started setting he made his way to the meeting point that Ubuashiki had told them to go to, holding the salmon in a well wrapped container.
Giyuu was already there. Damn, Tengen wanted to be the one there early.
He waved one hand in the air, “Giyuu, didn’t expect you to be here this early!” Giyuu stared at him for an awkward amount of time, until finally realizing that tengen was waiting for a response. “Ah, yes, I thought it would be better to arrive early, since you're usually the first to arrive at the hashira meetings…”
Giyuu trailed off at the end, muttering something too quiet for Uzui to hear. Wait, Giyuu was usually late to the hashira meetings. How did he know he came early? Eh, it doesn't really matter.
“Oh how thoughtful of you! Actually, I brought something for you, I hope you like it! I heard it was your favorite.” Tengen held out the wrapped up salmon daikon, watching closely as Giyuu opened it. He opened things far too slowly for Tengens liking. He swore he'd seen turtles moving faster.
When Giyuu finally opened the salmon, Tengen could tell he was put off guard. It was usually difficult to read what Giyuu felt in most situations, but Uzui could tell by the way his eyes opened wider and when his lips parted just slightly that he was surprised.
That means Tengen did it. He did it! He surprised little ol’ Tomioka! He had to brag to Shinobu later.
But then Giyuus lips did something really weird. It looked as if they went up…as if they… Oh my god. He was smiling. Barely smiling, but smiling! Giyuu Tomioka smiling! It was the flashiest thing Tengen had ever seen Giyuu do. Did…did he have dimples? This image was forever printed into Tengen’s brain.
Then Tengen noticed Giyuu was speaking. “Thank you for this, Tengen… How did you know I liked this?” Aw, he stopped smiling, “You know, you should smile more! It makes you ten times flashier. And definitely cuter. My wives would love you!”
Giyu seemed at a loss for words. His face was getting super red and he was making that surprised face again. He didn’t seem like he was going to respond anytime soon so Tengen continued, “Oh yea! How could I forget?!” Tengen reached down and poked Giyuu’s forehead.
“Would you like to have dinner with me and my wives sometime? I’m sure they’d love to meet you!” Giyuu stutterd for a moment, before lowering his head and pointing to the path ahead of them. It was already night. “Ah, erm… that would be great Tengen but…” Giyuu swallowed again. Were his ears red? “The mission?”
Shit.
………………
As they made their way through the forest that Ubuyashiki had assigned them to, Tengen thought that it was getting quiet. Too quiet.
“So, Giyuu?” Giyuu made a ‘hm?’ noise. “I’ve been thinking I should ask but, what's your type?” Gyiuu turned his head to look at Tengen. “Uh, I am the water pillar. Did you not know?”
What. Is this guy serious? Does he not understand the question? No, it's probably a joke. Giyuu doesn't really seem like the type to joke though… But there’s no way he doesn't understand.
Tengen decided to laugh it off, “Aha, funny.” Giyuu looked at him blankly. “Funny?”
Shit. “Wait, do you not know what I’m talking about?” Giyuu looked at him blankly again. “I’m the water pillar? I use water breathing.” Oh my fucking god.
Tengen was about to say something when a demon suddenly slashed him in the back. They’ll have to get back to this later.
………………….
After fighting the rather powerful low level demon, they both met back at a tree. There weren't any injuries other than the scratch on Uzui’s back. Oh well, it wasn’t all that bad.
Hmm.
“Hey Giyuu~ I think I got a scratch on my back, can you check it out?” Tengen started to take the top part of his uniform off. Maybe Giyuu is into muscles? Giyuu walked behind Tengen to get a better view of his back. “It’s not too bad. Still bleeding through.” It was? Ugh, how annoying.
“Wanna be my doctor, Giyuu~?” Giyuu poked what Uzui assumed to be the wound, “Shinobu would probably be able to help more than me.”
Did he still not get Tengen was flirting? “Nah, I don’t think I'll need Shinobu’s assistance for this one, it's not that bad.” Giyuu nodded.
They said their farewells and Tengen told him when to arrive for dinner with his wives.
Hopefully it goes better there.
