Chapter Text
We all take simple things for granted, like breathing and talking. The things that make us, us we all do it. Most of the time, we don't even notice until we can't do those things anymore. Until we can't hug the people we love anymore.
Breathing hurt, hell everything hurt but I pushed through trying to remember where I was. That's right Max Keller's office to win Wyatt that job back, but now I was in pain and sore to tired to move anymore even if I could. Finally opening my eyes I saw what was causing my breath to come out in strangled gasps like breathing through a straw. A cement pillar or rather a pile of them crushing me to the floor. One on my chest, stomach, both legs hell the only thing that didn't hurt was my head. My phone lay inches from my face ringing with Grace's name no doubt because Owen had panicked hearing that I was in here. "Owen is coming," I whispered not realizing I was surrounded by people. Civilians from the company and none other than Max Keller himself. My phone continued to ring, even if I could reach it I couldn't speak.
"hello?" Max asked in toned that sounded almost cheerful but I suppose it would when under Grace's name was 9-1-1 Dispatch.
I could hear the panic in her voice as Max described my injuries to her, I heard her ask about Owen as she was put on speaker. The pain and the need for air over powering the need to ask if the 126 had heard I was trapped.
"She says Owen is coming and to hang on she also says we are supposed to leave and that she will stay with you," Max said as I had all I could do to nod. I watched them go to safety and I listened to Grace's voice for a moment or two until I heard it. The click of a firefighter radio, the sound of someone moving in the ruble and my name. Screaming was useless as that required air I didn't have and sound I couldn't make.
"Judd, Baby its ok," Owen said as he moved my hair out of my face I just smiled because I knew it just like he did if I survived that would be one hell of a lucky break.
"I am going to get you out of here and Tommy will patch you up," he said as I watched his hands go for the pillar on my chest but try as he might he wasn't moving it. Stopping him seemed impossible so I bit my tongue and let him keep trying. The pillar moved inch by inch my world fading to black as Owen grunted and screamed crying out to god to fix this. The thing was fixing it seemed impossible and I wasn't ready to die but I wasn't going to let him kill himself either.
"I have got this you hear me! You do not die today Ryder," he said in his stern voice normally I would be a puddle begging for him but instead I just smiled.
:I have got it!" Owen yelled as he disappeared from my line of sight for a moment before returning with a long black metal pipe. He was going to try and pry the pillars off of me and I just shook my head he really was determined.
"ready?" he asked
"yes," grace and I spoke together but only her voice was heard as I tried to ready myself for the pain. There was no readying myself for this one minute it was the worst pain imaginable the next I felt like I could breathe again but a cough squished that dream in seconds as I spit out a mouthful of blood.
"That's Ok," Owen said as he kissed my head clicking his radio to get the team down here to me so I could go home.
"Dispatch we have got firefighter Ryder safely," Owen said to Grace as I could hear her excited yell.
"I love you," Owen whispered as I was lifted on to a back board and that was the last thing I remember. That and watching the team look at Owen and I with shocked faces as he held my left hand in his own.
"I am buying you a ring," he whispered softly kissing me.
