Chapter Text

I grew up in a rental house, owned by my parents. Many different tenants have come and gone. Most of them were elderly. So the house was peaceful. I didn’t grow up alone. I had my sister Maddie. She was a few years younger than me, still in high school. Madison was fearless and confident. Often in trouble for sneaking out. I never had a reason to sneak out. Even when Madison tried to drag me to a party with friends, I still found some way to stay behind. Lately, I’ve quit college. Instead, I accepted a job at a grocery store and picked up Madison’s chores at home when she was “ studying” . My days were spent at home and nights were at the store. Any free time, I spent curled up in the attic, reading. A place in the house no one entered unless it was a holiday. One day while I was cleaning up after breakfast, the doorbell rang. I left the kitchen to open the door, but was beaten by my mother. Going back to my job. Maddie entered to help.
“There are boys out there talking to dad about living here for a few months.” She whispered. “So?” I replied as I brought the dishes to the kitchen. Following me, Maddie placed the plates of food on the counter. “They look like they are in a rock band. Dad might not let them live here.” I shrugged, “Because they might be noisy and we have a few elderly guests; who might not want to hear rock ’n roll at three in the morning.” Madison scooped the leftovers up and put them in some Tupperware bowls. I rinsed off the dirty dishes and put them in the dishwasher. “They are kind of cute.” Maddie smiled. I stopped what I was doing and looked at her.
“What are you saying?”
“Nothing.”
“Madison?!”
“They might make it a little interesting around here.”
“Dad has an unspoken rule. Any guy who lives here is not allowed to fool around with us.”
Madison put her hands on her hips. Judging me. “What?” I tossed down the sponge. “Sophomore year. When the Ericksons moved in. I know you were making out with Sean by the garden shed.” She teased. My cheeks turned pink. “Like you’re an angel.” I joked, “ You tell mom and dad you're at a friend’s house. Yeah, your boyfriend is in the next state over.” Maddie gasped. Dipping a hand in the water and splashing me. I splashed back. Water-soaked my top, showing my black lace bra. “Dude!” I jumped back. She laughed at me. Taking out the hose I sprayed her, ruining her makeup. “You bitch.” Madison cursed. Her mascara ran down her cheeks. We giggled looking at ourselves. Water covered the kitchen.
“Ah…hey.” One of the band members stood in the doorway. He had shaggy dirty blond hair and thick sideburns. Wearing a trucker hat that said ‘I love Bingo’. He was slightly chubby. Wearing a polo, hoodie, jeans, and vans. About 5’5”. His face was red with embarrassment. We gawked at him as he stared back at us. Madison grabbed a napkin and wiped her face. His blue eyes looked fixedly on me. My jaw hung open. I crossed my arms over my chest. “Can I help you?” I asked awkwardly. “Ah….um…yes. Your um…Glass of water.” He tripped over his words.
“You mean our mom sent you.“ Madison fixed her hair. I rolled my eyes. Maddie went to the fridge and took out a bottle of water. Handing it to him, she winked. She was the reason our father made that rule. Once she entered high school, Madison act a certain way around guys. She was looser with men than I was. Dad walked in on her and some guy who was here living with his grandmother. Even without makeup, boys always followed her. She had curves in all the right places. Whereas mine was a little heavy. Maddie spent more time on her appearance than I did. I tended to live in the shadows from time to time. “I’m Patrick.” The boy smiled, taking the water.
“My name is Maddie and this is my sister Gina.” She introduced us, “ she’s a total nerd.”
I threw the sponge at her. “Hey” Maddie turned and glared at me. I walked out, pushing past them.
Walking through the hallway, and up the stairs to my room. I and Madison shared a room with a bathroom. Slipping off my shirt, I replaced it with my maroon tank top. The tank top was a little bag and the strap on my left shoulder would often slide down. Opening the bedroom door, I saw the rest of the band. 3 guys with tattoos. They all wore grunge-looking clothes. Similar to what you would find on the clearance rack at Hot Topic. One had brown curly hair. Taller than the others. The one next to him had shoulder-length ginger hair and snakebite piercings. He wore black rectangle glasses and held on to a pair of drumsticks. The last one had jet black and red hair. He wore thick eyeliner. He elbowed Patrick in the gut and nodded toward me. At least I thought it was me; until Madison skipped by. My dad, Richard, followed. He frowned. “You can practice in the shad, but no messing around with my daughters,” Richard warned. Maddie bent over a little as she picked up the shirt I tossed on the floor. I could see the guy in eyeliner raise his eyebrows. Dad banged his fist on the door frame; causing them to jump. I glanced up at my dad. “Gigi, if any of these boys mess with you or your sister let me know.” He smiled at me.
“Sure thing Dad. “ I grinned. My father left us alone. Guyliner steps forward. “Gigi.” He smirked, “Patrick said he likes your bra.” “Dude!” Patrick shoved him. His friend kept talking, “ My name is Pete. You and your sister should check out our band.”
“OMG! I would like love to check out your band.” Maddie giggled, “Don’t count on Gina though. All she does is work.” I pulled her hair, “ I work all the time because I cover your shifts at home.” She pouted, rubbing her head. “So then we can see you both there.” Pete handed Madison a flyer. Pulling Maddie in, I closed the door. Turning to her, I snapped at her. “What the fuck are you doing? You know mom and dad won’t let you go.”
“ Then come with me. Please. We never hang out anymore. “
“Fine. I’ll ask mom.”
“I think the drummer likes you.”
“The dude with the piercings?”
“No, the chubby one. Patrick. The chubby guy is always the drummer. “
“Bitch, you blind. The other guy was clearly holding drumsticks.”
Maddie places her hands on her hips. She gave me a sour look. She opened the door. “Patrick, do you play drums?” He nodded. Looking back at me. Madison spoke in a snotty tone,“ See, he’s their drummer. “ Patrick spoke up, “ I’m not the drummer. Andy is. I’m the lead singer and rhythm guitarist.” The guy with the drumsticks waved. Pete pointed to himself, “ I play bass and our lead guitarist is Joe.” He flashed a peace sign. Maddie blows a kiss. I grabbed my book from the dresser and stomped away. Hiding in the attic until someone needed me.
Curled up on the window seat. In the middle of reading ‘ The Hate List ’ when I heard the sound of punk rock. Looking out the window, I saw the shed doors open and Patrick singing. Place my bookmark in my book, save my spot, and headed downstairs. Walking down the hall of the third floor. One of the older ladies stepped out. “Gina, what is that noise?” An old lady with silver hair asked me. “It’s okay Mrs. Campbell, there is a band that is living with us for a little while. They are practicing in the shed.” I told her. Mrs. Campbell frowned. “ Tell them to keep it down, I was taking a nap.” She snapped. Mrs. Campbell shuffled back into her room and slammed the door. I dashed down the stairs and went to the laundry room. Mom was folding a set of towels by the dryer. Joining in. My mother, Claire, sighed. “ Anything you want to ask?” She nudged me. I nodded silently. “Spit it out then.” Claire laughed. “I and Maddie were invited to watch the band play. Maddie wanted to go.”I explained.
“Do you want to?”
“Yeah, but don’t you need me here?”
“ For one night, I think we can survive. Plus I would rather see you go with her than her friends.”
“Thanks, mom.” I smiled, “ Oh. And Mrs. Campbell wants the guys to keep the noise down.” Claire rolled her eyes. “ Mrs. Campbell would say the same thing if a bird was chirping. She’s more than welcome to move out. Old hag always complains about something. Plays the old lady card when the rent is late.” My mother started to rant. I laughed as she went off on everyone she couldn’t stand. Ending with why Richard did all the business. For the rest of the day, I helped my mom clean the house until it was time to make dinner. Then Maddie joins us in the kitchen. Madison inched next to me as I was chopping lettuce for the salad. “ Did you ask mom?” She muttered. “Yeah, she said as long as I’m going.” I replied. Maddie nudged me. I ignored her the first time two times. She hates being ignored, so she bumped me. “What?” I snapped at her. “You’re going right?” She gave me the puppy dog pout. “Really? The pout. I already said I was going.” I rolled my eyes. Maddie flung her arms around me, thanking me like I saved her life. I had her set the table while mom and I finished cooking.
I hid my book under the table. Barely eating. The chair next to me pulled out. From the corner of my eye saw Patrick sit down. Madison kicked me. Glancing up across the table, Maddie was using her eyebrows to point him out. Piss off , I mouthed. I went back to reading. “What are you reading?” I felt him lean toward me. Looking up, I was practically nose to nose with him. My brown eyes widened. “Gina, no books at the table.” Richard scolded me then turned to Maddie, “ no phones either. “ Closing it. I placed it between us. “ The Hate List. Is it good?” Patrick smiled, trying to start a conversation. I stared at my plate of spaghetti and just nodded. “I’m sorry.” He whispered. His voice sounded soft and a little hurt. I didn’t think he would be sensitive. Maybe because he was in a band. Certain musicians don’t look very sensitive. I turned to him and gave a small smile. “It’s well written and it makes you think. You feel bad for all of the characters with what they’re going through even the antagonist. “ I explained to him, “It’s a little different than the other novels I read.” “You mean those trashy romance novels you read at two in the morning.” Maddie giggled. I sat back in my chair. “Your daughter has no love life, Richie.” Mrs. Campbell squawked. I covered my face, “I’m going to get ready for work now.” I slipped out with my book and left. Alone in my room, I changed into my black work pants and green polo. Tying back dark brown hair. Grabbing my bag and my phone as I left my room. Making sure I had my book with me. By the front door, I took the keys off the hook at the door.
I sat at my register reading. Another late night. It was like a ghost town here. The register next to me was Jenny, a work friend, who I would often gossip too. Our manager, Mark, came out of his office and ordered her to mop up the spilled milk in the dairy aisle. I could hear her groaning as she passed by. Ding. The doors slide open. Yay. Costumers. Probably Potheads. They come in this late when they have the munchies. Mark walked up to my register. “Gina, Why don’t you do something? Like put-backs?” he pointed to the cart of things that needed to go back on the shelf. I dropped my book on the counter and dragged my feet out from behind the computer. Taking the cart and wheeling it behind me. I put back a few cans of soup, three bags of chips, nine jars of baby food, and a bag of Rolos. Down the breakfast aisle, Patrick was on his tippy toes. Reaching for a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. He didn’t even notice I was there as he stepped up onto the self. I glance in the cart and saw a family-sized one. I took it out and walked over to him. “You’re going to get hurt that way,” I said looking up at Patrick. He stepped off and grinned. “Sorry.” He fixed his shirt. He was four inches taller than me. I had to look up. Patrick walked up to me, awkwardly close. Holding a box of cereal between us. “We have cereal at home. Just so you know.” I told him. “Yeah, but you were out of cinnamon toast crunch. You’re sister said you get home late and normally eat cereal before bed.” He spoke softly.
“Right, I ate the last of it the other night.”
“It’s cool. If you are what you eat then I would be cereal.”
“Haha, Me too. I’m guessing Maddie told you where to find me.”
“Um…no. I have seen you here before.”
“What?” My jaw dropped, “I haven’t checked you out before.” His face went beet red. “I’ve checked out…you…um…I mean, I did self-checkout.” Patrick stuttered. The surprised look on my face made him pull down his hat. I giggled. “Stalker.” I tapped his arm. “Just so you know. I had no clue where you lived. Joe found the apartment in the paper.” He laughed. “Noted.” I looked down at my shoes. I went back to work. Placing more boxes on the selves. “I’m sorry for bothering you at dinner,” Patrick said as he handed me a box of Pop-Tarts. “It’s okay. It’s more Madison’s fault.” I shrugged. “Hey, Let me help.” He smiled. “You don’t-“ He cut me off.
“Get in the cart.”
“What? No.”
“get in the cart and I’ll push. We can put all of this back together.”
“What if I get fired?”
“I’m sure he’s not paying attention.”
“You’re crazy.”
“When was the last time you had fun?”
I bit my lip. Climbing into the cart. Patrick pushed the cart down each aisle as we put away the rest of the items. Laughing the whole time. When we were done, Patrick helped me out. the friction between his hand and mine made a spark. Zapping us, both. “when do you clock out?” Patrick asked. “In about ten minutes,” I told him. “Hungry?” He shook the box, “ I’ll wait for you.” “Awesome.” I blushed. Slowly walked back to my register. Jenny waited for me. Popping her gum. “You finally notice him. That fucker as came in here buying random things.” I rolled my eyes. “Don’t you roll your eyes at me?” Jenny sat on the counter, “Last time he came in here and bought a freaken Cosmo magazine. Then trashed it when he saw Mark flirting with you.” I logged out of my computer., “Mark is a creep who flirts with every girl who works here.” “Right, but the guy was so heartbroken.” She smacked her gum. Putting my book in my backpack, I headed out. Patrick leaned on the wall. “Need a ride?” I smirked. He followed me to the car. “Just so you know. My manager, Mark, is a creep.” I looked at him. “I’m guessing your coworker told you.” He blushed. “I didn’t know you like Cosmo.” I laughed as I started the car.
It was almost one in the morning. I was sitting on the kitchen counter with a bowl of cereal in my hands with Patrick. Feeling comfortable. I wasn’t the type of person that like to share my thoughts. I preferred to isolate myself. “So my dad walked in on her and Drake. In the middle of sex. Can you believe that? Since then we’ve had that rule.” I explained, “It’s mainly for her. She’s brought strange guys home and even slept with some who lived here.” “Have you ever brought a strange guy here?” He asked. “No. I normally just said I was going to the bookstore or something. I try to keep my life separate from here.” I stared at the bowl of cinnamon-flavored milk. “So you have had a boyfriend.” Patrick glanced up at me. “No. I’ve had dates. Really bad dates. Some ending in bad choices.” I frowned, “You?” He set the bowl in the sink. “When I get the guts to ask her out. yeah, but I can be a little shy.” I giggled, “A little?” Patrick shrugged. Placing my bowl in the sink next to his. I wiggled to the edge of the counter trying to get down. He placed his hands on my hips. Helping me down. My hands were on his shoulders. Staring into each other’s eyes. His eyes were blue with yellow specks. Like stars in the galaxy. I was lost. His soft lips are close to mine. I didn’t realize we were about to kiss. “No.” I pushed him away. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.” Patrick looked at his shoes. “My dad would kick you out if he knew.” I hugged myself. “You don’t have to tell him.” He spoke up. “Madison would if she saw.” I answered him, “I’m sorry. I….have to go.” I walked past him. Patrick grabbed my hand. Turning, I looked at him in awe. “Goodnight.” He spoke softly. My heart beat faster as he held my hand. “Night,” I whispered. A smile spread across my face. I snuck into my bedroom trying not to wake Maddie. Changed into my Pjs and slipped under the covers. Laying in bed, I thought of Patrick. Wondering if I should have kissed him. Wishing I had. Madison turned over and poked me.
“Hey. How was work?”
“Perfect.”
“Sweet…I got to second base with Andy. Don’t tell dad.”
She rolled back over. My eyes grew wide.
The weeks were gawky. Patrick wouldn’t look at me. We were back to square one. It was almost as if that night was a dream. The idea of him kissing me lingered in the back of my mind, soon it was all I could think about at night. The feeling grew rapidly. Until one night I woke up from a wet dream. Now every time I saw him, the dream of him pinning me down and taking me; would replay in my head. He didn’t enter the grocery store alone anymore. He had Pete tag along. I skipped dinner the last few nights leading up to the concert. Sitting cross-legged on the bed, I watch Maddie pick out the outfit she was wearing. A gray cami top and army green crop hoodie with a short skirt. She looked like a MySpace whore. I changed my clothes when she started doing her makeup. Black tank top, ripped acid-washed shorts, fishnets, and black ankle boots. I joined her in the bathroom. Taking out my small box of makeup. “Who are you trying to impress?” She teased. I put on a little eyeliner and mascara. “No one,” I said as I picked a dark red lipgloss. “That’s your dating lipgloss. You only wear that when you want the guy to kiss you.” Maddie said.
“Maybe I want to make out with random guys when I’m there since my love life is so empty.”
“Oh please, you would never do that.”
“You don’t know me.”
Madison straightened her hair. I just let my curls run loose. We left late for the concert. Maddie couldn’t decide which shoes to wear. She finally picked a pair of converse and we ran downstairs. Driving downtown Chicago was a nightmare. I parked the car as Maddie ran inside. When I entered, the band was on stage. Patrick was upfront singing. The sight of him caught me off guard. The night he hung out with me at work. Staying up late talking to him. Regretting not letting him kiss me. Was he upset about that? If we were back at the store, would I have let him kiss me? I read romance novels where the guy and girl always share a passionate first kiss. Reality has treated me horribly. I made my way through the crowd, trying to reach my sister. His voice was so pure. Sweet like honey. They practice multiple times a day when they weren’t at work.
“Between your smiles and regrets:
"Don't say it's over"
Dead and gone, dead and gone whoa oh oh
The calm before the storm set it off (set it off)
And the sun burnt out tonight
Reception less than warm set it off
And the sun burnt out too”
Patrick sang. Pete jumped around with his bass. Joe spun as he played. Andy angrily smashed the drums. I turned to look for my sister. She was by the bar. I pulled Madison off some guy she was grinding against and dragged her to the back to see the band. “Whoo! That was totally awesome!” She threw up her arms. Fireball came from her breath. “Did he buy you shots?” I asked. “Yeah, what a sweetheart. “ she gave me a goofy smile. “ you’re underage!” I yelled. Joe opened the door. Maddie leaned on me as I walked with her backstage. “Is she okay?” Joe asked. “She’s borderline drunk,” I said as we passed by. Having her sit down. “You guys were aammmazing!” Madison giggled. She pointed at Joe, “ you’re cute.”
“I’m sorry.” I apologized to Joe. He just shrugged. “All cool, she just needs to sober up.” Joe handed Maddie a water bottle. Patrick noticed me. Shocked, he said, “I thought you weren’t coming.” “ uh?” I tilted my head. We slipped away from the group. “I was waiting for you by the door, but Madison said she was late because you weren’t coming,” Patrick told me. “ The patron saint of liars and fakes couldn’t pick a pair of damn shoes. That’s why we were late.” I crossed my arms. Things grew silent at first, but then I spoke up.
“I’m sorry about the other day.”
“It’s fine.”
“ I just didn’t want someone to catch us.”
“It’s okay. You have the right to say no. You don’t have to hide behind that.”
“What? No, I wanted to kiss you.”
Bewildered, his jaw dropped. I looked at my boots, embarrassed. The words just slipped out. My heart wished he kiss me now. Patrick stared at the floor. “I’m glad you came.” He muttered. He took a small step closer. Making my heart beat faster. His fingers tips touched mine. Pulling me. Leaning in. Just as our lips almost touched.
“Gina, I wanna go home now.” Maddie shoved Patrick out of the way. He wrinkled his nose, frustrated. Maddie grabbed my wrist. Dragged me out of the dressing room. Sitting in the car. Maddie pushed her seatback. Resting my head on the steering wheel. She poked my side. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Goddamn it!” I hit the top of the wheel with my fists. “Geez psycho, just drive already. “ Maddie snapped. I screamed. She flipped me off. Starting the car, I put my seatbelt on. Pulling out of the parking spot and heading home. I was steaming mad. Pulling into the driveway, Maddie jumped out. He was going to kiss me. Yet, my sister felt the need to cock block me. Patrick was cute and sweet and funny. I was just getting to know him. What if he did and it lead somewhere? The visions of my dream replayed in my head again. I shuffled up the stairs. Kicking off my boots and collapsed onto my bed. Groaning. My eyes felt puffy. “Get over it,” Maddie said as she left the bathroom. I turned away from her. Hugging my pillow and kicking my legs in the air; on the bed like a three-year-old.
Maddie went back to school. The house was peaceful when she was away. I was able to finish my chores without interruptions. I was still kind of angry at her. She only cares about herself. Sometimes. I curled up on the window seat. The window was cracked open. Letting in a cool spring breeze. Getting lost in my romance novel, Unlocked. My brain couldn’t focus. I would read two sentences and my mind would fly somewhere else. A solo guitar riff broke through the window. I looked out to see Patrick. Listening to him sing. I leaned out a little more. Oops. My book fell out. Dropping by his feet. Patrick looked up. Anxiously, I closed the window. Counting ten seconds. I peeked out. He was gone. “Shit,” I mumbled to myself. I closed the window again. Backing away. My ears picked up footsteps. Spinning around. I was face to face with Patrick. He held up my book to his lips. “Lost something.” He raised an eyebrow. “Thanks” I reached for it. Patrick pulled it out of my way. “For a price.” He smirked.
“Someone had a confidence boost.”
“Only because we are on the same page.”
I smiled. Patrick dropped the book on the floor. Putting a hand around my waist, pulling me close. His body against mine. Lips brushed mine. Kissing me. He tasted sweeter than any guy I ever kissed. We pulled apart. Catching our breath as we gazed into each other’s eyes. One kiss wasn’t enough. Arms wrapped around me. Keeping me close. Gripping his shirt. His hands wandered down my back. Kissing his jawline down his neck. Patrick moaned in my ear. We back up against the wall. Things started to get heavy. Picking me up, I wrapped my legs around his waist. His lips kissed my neck up to my ear. Nibbling my ear. I moaned. “Should we take this elsewhere?” he asked, “Unless you want to stop.” His suggestion of stopping brought me down. I let go. “I guess we should.” I gave him a weak smile. Patrick held my hands in his. “I don’t want to push you.” He told me. “It’s fine. I was going to say we can go to my room. Madison keeps condoms in her sock drawer.” I laughed. He stared at me with a straight face. “Sorry.” I shrugged, “I’m just feeling a little more attracted to you in more ways than one.”
“That’s like the hottest thing you can say right now.”
“It was the only way I could phrase ‘I want to fuck you right now’ nicely.”
“I wish you just said that.”
Patrick took my hand and lead me out. We dashed down the hallway. Mrs. Campbell opens her door. “Gina, is that you?” She put on her glasses. Patrick stood behind me. I held his hand behind my back. “Hey, Mrs. Campbell.” My voice shook. She squinted at Patrick. “That one of them isn’t it? Those rockers.” She wagged her finger. “Yeah and I’m sure want to tell him off, but…uh…hey did you pay last month’s rent?” I made a lazy effort to change the subject. Appalled, Mrs. Campbell shuffled back into her apartment. Snickering, we continued to run to my bedroom. Locking the door behind me. “You’re sure this is okay? What if we get caught?” Patrick pondered as he sat on my bed. I went to Madison’s dresser and stole a few condoms. “No, it’s perfect. My family isn’t here.… unless you don’t want to.” I raised my eyebrow.
“Say it again.”
“Fuck me, Patrick”
“ Yeah, let’s do it.”
“You’ve had sex before, right?”
“Yeah. Yeah, lots of hot sex.”
I shook my head. “You’re joking,” I smirked. “With an ex, a long time ago.” He said honestly. Our adrenaline started to crash. I sat next to him. We sat together in silence. Rushing into it was a bad idea. I set the condoms on the nightstand. Things started to feel pretty odd, up until Patrick leaned in and kissed me again. Taking charge. He pushed me back, crawling on top. Kissing once more before he paused. Waiting. Wanting a green light. “Fuck me right now.” I moaned. Standing up, he undid his belt. I stood up and unbutton his jeans. We helped each other undress with sweet kisses in between. With only our underwear on. Felt his hands explore my body. Playing with my breasts. His index finger traced around my nipple. I squirmed. Gripping the sheets as he used his tongue to make circles around my nipple. Then sucking it. I bit my bottom lip. Stopping, Patrick gave me a devious grin. I felt his hand travel down; playing with the elastic of my panties. “How wet are you?” He purred. Voice sounding low and seductive. Words caught in my throat as he slid them off. Using his fingers to test my wetness. Teasing me. My body quivered. I took a condom from the pile. He dragged me by my ankles to the edge of the bed. I sat up. Kissing his chest down. Rolling down his boxers as I kissed his hips. Patrick bit back a moan. Making eye contact. I stroked his cock before rolling the condom on. Pushing the tip of his cock in my tight pussy. At first, it was painful. Making it a little awkward. I tensed up a little. Patrick said warmly, “It’s okay, I’ll go easy.”; caressing my inner thigh. Slowly thrusting, to help loosen it. My breathing hitches. Gently sliding it in when ready. He bit his bottom lip as he found a working rhythm. Gripping my thighs. I hooked my leg around his waist. At first, it was slow and steady. Arching my back, when he put pressure on my thighs. Leaving bruises like his fingerprints. Moaning. The pace picked up. I gripped the sheets again when he thrust harder. Faster. Warming up like a raging fire. “Oh dear lord.” Patrick moaned under his breath. I gasped. “Patrick…faster…oh god…” I begged. “Say it.” He growled. “Fuck me harder.” I pleaded.
“Say my name.”
“Pa…Patrick…” I stuttered. Tilting his head back. Pulling my hips down harder. Rocking the bed. Pulsing. Breathing in sharply as we hit the climax. “Jesus Christ.” I cursed as it dissolved into pleasure. Patrick pulled out. Bending over me. Both of us tried to catch our breath. I looked up at him. A little embarrassed by how sweaty I looked. Patrick kissed me gently on the lips, then went to the bathroom to throw away the used condom. Curling up in the covers. Trying to wrap my mind around the string of events. He came out of the bathroom and slipped under the covers. Spooning me. Nuzzling my neck. “What are you doing this week?” His voice sounded sleepy. “I’m working at Food-mart,” I told him. “Even Friday?” Patrick traced his finger down my arm. “I have a double that day,” I said, grinning. “You work too much.” He kissed my shoulder. “I’m off Saturday.” I giggled, “Are you trying to plan the next time we do this?”
“Will there be a next time?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe after our date?”
“A date?”
“Well I was hoping to ask you, but we ended up somewhere else.” Patrick laughed. “We had sex,” I said bluntly. Just saying it was strange. Patrick cuddling me was strange. Any man would have left by now. Or at least the ones I’ve slept with. Patrick was different. He cuddled with me and started talking about dating. “Great sex” I could hear him smile when he said that. I turned to face him. “Amazing sex.” I kissed him. Patrick brushed my hair out of my face. “So does that mean yes?” He asked. “What kind of date?” I smirked. “I didn’t think there was more than one kind of date,” Patrick said. His eyebrows knit together as he smirked.
“Yeah, it could be a chill date where we hang or it could be romantic. Different tones. Like is it just us or friends like the concert.”
“Was the concert our first date?”
“No, why?”
“ First dates are awkward.”
“We just had sex. I don’t think our first date will be awkward.”
“True.” He chuckled, “It’s just a simple movie date. Alone.” I leaned in to kiss him. Keeping our lips an inch apart. “Is it a make-out movie?” I purred. Tracing my finger down his side. “I don’t think Ghostbusters is a make-out movie,” Patrick said, with a crack in his throat. “Trying to scare me?” I kissed his lips softly before sucking on his bottom lip. His eyes widened when I let go. Gently rubbing the tip of his cock. Patrick gulped. Stroking his cock as it began to erect. “You’re naughty.” He growled. Patrick laid on his back. Wrapping my fingers around his dick. Jerking. He rolled his eyes up. Small moans escaped. I shifted my position. Moving my hand up and down. Patrick closed his eyes. Using my tongue, I circled the head. Then slipped it into my mouth. Lightly sucking. “Oh, God!” Patrick melts. Once his cock was hard. I slipped on a new condom. Crawling on top, I kissed his chest. Sliding his strong cock deep into my semi-soaked pussy. Patrick inhaled sharply. Riding him. He thrust up, bouncing me. I giggled. Patrick placed his hands on my hips. Thrusting again. “Mmm…” I moaned, “God, you feel good.” Rocking the bed again. Making it hit the wall. He grunted with every thrust. I rolled my hips. Patrick moaned loudly, “Damn babe.” Taking his hands off me, I pinned his arms down. “Say it,” I growled. “Fuck me.” He playfully snapped. I nipped his ear. “Say my name,” I said while tugging on his earlobe with my teeth. “Fuck me, Gina,” Patrick growled. I grind my hips again. Making his body quake.
Suddenly I heard knocking. “Gina, are you in there?” Maddie’s voice pierced through the door. Bursting my bubble. Looking at each other shocked. I climbed off. Patrick hopped off the bed and gather his clothes. Hiding in the bathroom. I grabbed my panties. Struggling to put them on. Took my bathrobe off the hook and threw it on. Finally, I answered the door. Cracking it enough to stick my head out. “‘Sup sis.” I grinned. Hair fell in my face. “Move, I need to do my homework.” She pushed on the door. “Why don’t you take the socks out of the dryer. “ I gritted my teeth.
“Huh?”
“The socks in the…the dryer.”
“Oh! …omg you’re fooling around with someone. Who? Is he cute?” Madison squealed, “You haven’t had sex in a while. How was it?” I hit my head against the door. “Fine.” She snapped. Leaving me alone. Shutting the door behind me. Patrick walked out in his boxers. “ why are you asking her to take socks out of the dryer?” He asked, puzzled. “It’s our code for having sex. In college or anywhere, if you put a sock on the door; it means privacy. We can’t do that. So we made up a phase to say.” I explained to him. Patrick looked over at the bed and then back at me. “Should we finish or cuddle?” Patrick shrugged. I rushed up to him and wrapped him in a hug. “What do you want?” I nuzzled his neck. Patrick picked me up and tossed me on the bed. “Roar.” He said, pawing at my robe.
“Spill. Everything. I want to know all of it. Like I was there.” Jenny said as she filed her nails. I blushed. “ He was sweet.” I smiled widely, not looking up from my phone. Another boring night at work. Patrick was texting me. I’ve had a smile plastered on my face for a full 48 hours. Not even working at Food-mart could bring it down. Jenny and Maddie were the only two to pick up why. I told Madison a few things but left out who. Jenny frowned. “No. I said everything. How big was it” she snorted. “ I don’t know. Bigger than I thought. Better than I’ve ever had. I didn’t even have to fake it. ” I laughed. “Ooo… I wish my hubby could do me like that.” Jenny joked. I looked up from my phone and saw Mark strutting up to us. “What are you giggling about?” He questioned us. Jenny walked back to her register. Slipping my cell into my pocket. I took out some paper towels and cleaner. Spraying the conveyor belt down and wiping it. Mark leaned on the counter. “I noticed you’re not working Saturday.” He grinned.
“Yeah.”
“Same here.”
“Cool.”
“So…um...Are you working at your other job?”
“No.”
“Great, do you-“
“Let me stop you right there.” I glanced up at him, “ I’m not interested in hanging out. I see you only as a manager. Not a friend or a love interest. I’m sorry.” His face was red. If this was a cartoon, steam would be coming out of his ears. Mark put his face close to mine. Dropping his voice low, he said, “ I saw you and that punk the other night joking around with a shopping cart. While you were on the clock. If you know what is good for you. I suggest canceling your date. You’re coming in on Saturday. We need an extra.” He turned his heel and made his way to the office. Tick...Tick...Boom! My anger exploded. I have worked at this stupid job for a couple of years. I was sick of Mark’s pettiness. I threw the bottle of cleaner on the ground. Stepping out from behind the register. I yelled out to him. “Then I’m calling HR. Because you just threatened me for not going on a date with you. I see you flirt with all the girls here.” Mark glanced back at me. “Some of them brush it off, but I’m not one of them. I work too damn hard. I have one day off this week and a guy who treats me better than you’ve treated any of the women who work here. So stick that in your juice box and suck it, Mark.” I pulled out my cellphone. He glanced down. “You’re just one person.” Mark chuckled. Jenny raised her hand, “I’ll call too and I know Rosa will, plus Niki, Alexia, and Brittney.” Panicking, he said, “ Having a nice Saturday.” Mark rushed back into his office. Jenny smiled at me, “You grew some balls.” I felt good. Proud. “It was a long time coming.” I beamed. I picked up the bottle and started to wipe down the counters again. Jenny gabbed about her kids. Mark left us alone for the rest of the night, until ten minutes till close when Patrick walked in. He greeted me and Jenny as he walked up. “Dude, you missed it. Gina was savage.” She expressed to Patrick. “What happened?” He looked at me confused. Jenny filled him in, “Mark was trying to ask her out and she laid it out for him. So he took the rejection hard and commanded her to work Saturday. Gina didn’t back down. She threatened to call HR.” Patrick glanced over at me. “I didn’t think he was watching the cameras and he saw us.” I leaned over and told him. Patrick lowered his smile. “He threatened you?” He questioned. “Nothing new. Mark treats women like shit.” Jenny spoke up,” He’s jelly because one of the girls on the list isn’t interested in him.”
“A list?”
“Of girls, he thinks are cute. He makes a little game out of it. Trying to see how long it takes to get us in bed. Any girl on the list who has someone gets targeted. Except for Rosa. She has a girlfriend, so he is trying to see if she is open for a threesome.”
“Okay…”
Patrick clinches his fists. “Hey, your punk ass boyfriend can’t be here.” Mark raced up. He stood close to Patrick, towering over him. “Who the fuck do you think you are? Treating women as objects. Do you think being a manager at a crappy grocery store gives you the power to treat people like that? It doesn’t.” He raged on with fire in his eyes. Mark backed away, but Patrick kept going. Chasing him back to his office. I lean in and whisper to Jenny, “He is so hot right now.” “Man, if my husband did that, I’d be making out with him in the car.” She smirked. I logged out of my computer, flung my bag over my shoulder, and walked up to Patrick. “You’re fired.” Mark looked at me dead in the eyes. “Fine.”, I shrugged,” good luck filling Friday. It’s the first of the month. I’m still going to call HR.” I waved. “Wait, no I’ll take it back.” Mark grabbed my wrist. I broke free and shoved him. Patrick followed. “Sorry about your job.” He said as we walked to the car. “It’s fine, I’ll call HR and get my job back. Mark will be the one fired.” I laced my fingers with his.
We walked into the dining room. My dad was sitting at the table doing bills. We stopped. Richard looked up. “Any reason you two are together?” He raised an eyebrow. “We are just friends dad.” I said calmly,” I was feeling uncomfortable at work and Patrick showed up to make sure I was safe.” My Dad glared at Patrick. I gripped the strap of my bag nervously.
“So you made friends with my daughter.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And you just so happen to be at the store when this happens?“
“No, sir. Gina said her manager Mark was making her uncomfortable, that was pursuing her. He wouldn’t take no for answer.”
“So you made sure she was safe.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Because she is you’re ‘ friend ’. “ Richard used air quotes. “Because she is my friend sir. I care about her. I always look out for my friends.” Patrick said with a straight face. My eyes avoided my father’s. Patrick turned to me, “ Goodnight Gina. I’m glad you’re safe.” He gave me a kind smile and left. “Night,” I said under my breath. I sat down next to my dad and told him about work. About how Mark targets women and how he threatened me. Listening to me complain about what a scum Mark is, Richard, nodded. When I started to talk about Patrick, he stopped me. “You like him,” Richard stated. I shook my head.
“He's just a friend," I fibbed. "Have you been taking your medicine?" He asked. "Dad, I only take that when I'm anxious," I sighed. I hugged myself. Richard got up from the table. Disappearing into the kitchen, then coming back with a glass of water. "We've been through this Gigi. No one will ever love you," he placed the glass in front of me. "He's a musician. He'll tell you whatever you want to hear. Then go make out with Madison. She was always the pretty one," Richard reached into his pocket and pulled out the bottle. Placed it in front of me.
"I'm sure you felt anxious today."
I nodded. I took one pill. After that, I went to bed.
Staring into my closet. Pondering. He said it was a casual movie date; so this shouldn’t be this hard. Maddie was sitting at the desk typing when she looked over. “Whoever you’re going on a date with. He’ll like you in anything.” She called out. “All of my clothes say I’m a loser book nerd.” I whined. “ borrow something of mine.” Madison suggested.
“ I can’t my hips are too wide. I’m not curvy like you. I’m pretty sure I’m fat.”
“He’s already seen you naked, so it’s too late to complain.”
“Maybe I should cancel.”
“ Have fun dying alone then.”
I took out a faded jean skirt, rose-printed fishnet tights, a black scoop neck shirt that went over my shoulder, and black converse. Changing my clothes. Lightly put on make-up and clipped back my hair. “How’s this?” I asked. I stood by our mirror. Madison turned and gawked. “Omg, you look like Avril Lavigne.” She gushed, “Love it!” I left the room. Dashing down the stairs. My mom crossed my path. “Whoa, where are you going? Where is Maddie?” She blocked me. “I’m going to the Cineplex with friends. Maddie is doing her homework.” I told my mom. She stared at me in disbelief, “Did you switch personalities? Are you up to something?”
“No.”
“Okay…have fun, I guess.” Claire waved me by. I tried to remain calm and walk out the door. Sprinting down the sidewalk. At the end of the street, Patrick waited in a car. I dove into the passenger seat. He stepped on the gas. I kissed Patrick on the cheek. “Late again.” He teased. “Okay, this was my bad. I stressed about what to wear. I’m so lame.” I covered my face. “You look cute.” Patrick smiled. My cheeks turned pink.
“Just so you know, this is my favorite movie, so if I start quoting it, I’m not sorry.” Patrick expressed to me as we stood in line for popcorn. “That’s fine, but don’t laugh at me if I jump. The first ghost we see creeps me out.” I laugh. Patrick ordered. we grabbed our things a walked through the lobby. Observing the lobby, I noticed Pete with Maddie. “Fuck, Pete and Maddie are here.” I covered my face, “She told me she doing homework. That bitch.” “Why is she with Pete? She was with Joe last night.” Patrick said angrily. “I thought her and Andy were hanging out?” I asked him. We snuck into our theater in the back. “Your sister is something.” Patrick laughed nervously. “She’s a slut.” I corrected him. “I think we lost them.” Patrick sat down. Fifteen minutes in, a couple come running in and sitting two rows in front of us. They were a little noisy. Making out. I started to toss popcorn at them. “Stop it.” Patrick whispered. “sorry, but it’s funny.” I giggled, “They are blocking some of the movies.” I point to the pair of legs on the back of the seat. Patrick to a handful of popcorn and threw it at them. They sat up. We ducked down. Between the seats, I could see Madison’s face in the light of the movie screen. “It’s them,” I said in a hushed tone. “Do we just get up and walk out?” Patrick sighed. “You don’t want us exposing ourselves.” I snickered. A huge smile spread across Patrick’s face.
“Go get her, Ray.”
We laughed as we crawled out of the theater. Sitting outside the door. Leaning against the wall, we continued to quote lines. “I’m not gonna lie, but I was totally going to do that thing,” Patrick said shyly. “What thing?” I pondered. “That cheesy thing guys do on movie dates. When they yawn and put their arm around the girl.” He blushed. “Oh my God, that is such cliche.” I stared at the ceiling. Patrick stood up and held out his hand. Taking it. He helped me to my feet. “So now what?” I raised my eyebrow. “We can always see the next showtime.” He smiled. I shrugged and followed him to the box office.
While waiting for the next showing, we hung out in the mall. “I need to tell you something.” He chuckled running up to a store window. Patrick point to shoes in the window. “I have a shoe addiction.” He tried to say with a serious face but kept cracking a smile. “It’s okay to admit you have a problem. I buy new books and never read them. I just reread my old novels. I’ve read Unlocked about five times.” I hugged him. Breaking apart, he grinned, “Is that the book that almost hit me?” “Maybe…” I paused. “If you wanted my attention, Then all you had to do was ask. The books would appreciate it.” Patrick teased. Making me laugh, “If you wanted my attention then you shouldn’t have used self check out.”
“At first I used Joe then I used the self check out, but it often needed assistance.”
“No. I would remember Joe.”
“we would come in at night when he had the munchies. Wore a beanie and sunglasses. Had a beard.”
“…Are you telling me the pothead that asked odd questions was Joe!?”
I pushed him away. “He use to make me uncomfortable. Asking me if I was single.” Patrick’s face went red. Glancing down at his shoes. “He knew I like you and was just trying to help. To be fair, Joe was stone when he asked.” I rested my head against the wall. “He said someone like me, but it came off so wried. Like he was talking about his little buddy.” Patrick snorted. “ I don’t think that’s funny.” I frowned at him. Crossing my arms in disgust. “I’m sorry.” He let out a hardy laugh, “He calls me that sometimes. it’s a joke, but you…” Patrick leaned agitated to the wall laughing until he slide down. I bit my lip the I realized I was wrong, “Oh come on.” I giggled. Once he was able to speak without laughing, Patrick jumped up and said, “Joe is a cool guy. He was just trying to get me a date with you.” “I think it’s cute how shy you are.” I took his hand a pulled him closer. He turned ruby red. I kissed him softly on the lips. “Yeah.” His voice cracked. “Yeah because you definitely weren’t shy in bed the other day,” I whispered seductively in his ear. “The back seat is empty and we have twenty minutes. Thirty if we skip previews.” Suggested Patrick. Rushing to the car, we climbed into the backseat. It was easier to have sex in a bed. Every so often he would pull my hair and not in a kinky way. We used our ten extra minutes to run back to the theater. Seating in the back again. Halfway through Ghostbusters, Patrick put his arm around me. I felt relaxed. Safe. On the drive home, we stopped at a clearing. Looking out at the highway. “I don’t want this night to end.” I turned to him. “It doesn’t have to.” Patrick said, “ We can drive around all night a talk about random things.” “My parents would worry. I never stayed out past nine.” I mumbled.
“You still have a curfew?”
“Kind of. My sister would come home the next day and say she was at a friend’s house.”
“They use you to set an example.”
“Well yeah, because actually punishing her would be horrible.”
“Fuck it.” Patrick started the car. Pulling out of the parking spot and speeding down the road. Patrick drove a little faster than before. The wind whipped through the open windows. Into the city. “Where are we going?” I questioned, pushing my hair out of my mouth. He just smiled. Not answering. Gripping the handle. I closed my eyes. Heart raced. Zig zagging in and out of lanes. Sharp turns. Tale gating other cars. Racing down the city street until Patrick pulls into an empty parking lot. Slamming on the brakes; ends with a fishtail. “Dude, what the fuck.” I screamed, “We could have died!” “But we didn’t” Patrick grinned. Exiting the car. He slide across the hood and hopped over to the passenger door. Opening, Patrick held out his hand. “We are going to have some fun.” He grinned, “Just you, me, and this city.” “And if my parents worry?” I nervously said.
“You’re with me. You’re safe.”
I took his hand. Trusting him. We strolled down the sidewalk. Popping in a few bars and clubs, just for the music. Dancing. Drinking a little. Then a lot. At one point, we were playing laser tag. After we went back to the bar. Not watching the time. Ignoring the world. For a brief moment, it felt like we were the only ones on earth. I didn’t even notice my parents calling. A smile never left my lips. Eyes locked on Patrick. Cares gone. Holding me in his arms. He kissed me as we sat in the corner of the bar. We stumbled out of the bar a while later. “ That was the best time I’ve ever had.” I giggled loudly. “You have a cute laugh.” Patrick slurred. “You have a cute butt!” I grabbed his ass. Patrick covered his face, embarrassed. “Why do you always wear hats? Your face is so hot. “ I took his hat and placed it on my head. “How are you drunker than me?” He asked. I tripped over myself.
“I’m a lightweight.”
“You have the same amount as me.”
“The water the bartender gave me tased funny. Like vodka. Oh! We should go to that bar. We can do shots!”
“I think…um… I don’t think that’s good.”
I fell. “Maybe, we should go home.” He suggested. “You’re too drunk to drive.” I checked his pockets for the keys. “Gina stopped that tickles.” Patrick fell next to me. Taking the keys, I jumped up. Stumbling a little then ran across the street. Patrick chased me. “Wait for me.” I leaned against the car. Patrick ran up to me. Snatching the keys. “Nope. Changed my mind.” Patrick tossed them into the cup holder. Climbing into the back of the car. He pulled me in. “I got you alone.” Patrick held me. I sat on his lap. “You’re naughty.” I laughed. I felt him pinch my ass. “Mmm…” I bit my lip. He slides his hand up my skirt. Our foreheads touched. “Every minute we’re alone, you can’t keep your hand to yourself.” I snickered. “ it’s hard when I’m around you.” Patrick laughed. I rubbed my hand over the front of his pants.
“Tell me something.”
“About?”
“Your band.”
“We’re just starting, but soon we’ll be touring.”
“I’ll miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too.” We kissed. Instead of fooling around, we talked about our goals in life and passions. I told him about my goal to own a bakery. Live on my own without my family and other strangers. I explained to him why I dropped out of college. Too much money for a low grade. Even when you pull all-nighters on an essay or study. I didn’t fit in. He told me his first instrument was the drums. Patrick’s love for music shined in his eyes as he spoke. Pete was the one who convinced him to sing. I listen to him for hours. Until I drifted off to sleep.
I woke up in the backseat. Wearing his jacket like a blanket. My head was on his lap. Frantically, I searched for my phone in my purse. It was over a hundred missed calls. I shook Patrick’s arm. “Wake up.” I freaked, “I need to go home.” His eyes fluttered open. “What’s wrong?” Patrick asked. “My parents left me a shit ton of voicemails and missed calls. I need to go home.” I hugged myself. He jumped into the front seat and started the car. Driving us to the complex. On the front steps, Claire sat with her coffee. Her eyes widened when she saw me. “Where is God’s name have you been!” Claire screamed. She grabbed my arm. Gripping it till her knuckles were white. I tried to pull away. “I went to a friend’s. I lost track of the time. Ow, mom.” I lied. “And you! What are you doing with my daughter?” She shoved me aside a went for Patrick. “She called me when we needed a ride.” Patrick covered for me. Claire pulled his ear. “Did you touch her? You better not have taken advantage of her or I swear on the holy bible so will send you to Hell personally.” She cursed. “Mom, please stop. You’re hurting him.” I cried. “ yes ma’am, I promise. Ow!” He gritted his teeth. Claire let go of Patrick’s ear. “Going to a party? Gina, that’s not like you.” My mom sounded disappointed. “I’m sorry mom, I met up with friends and we got invited to a party. I called Patrick for help.” I explained. Claire hates being lied to. Madison does it constantly. Even when mom catches her, she doesn’t do anything about it. So I gave it a try. She gawked at me. I couldn’t tell if she believed me or not. “Just let us know next time,” Claire said to me, heartbroken. We ran inside.
“I’m sorry.” Patrick expressed to me before opening his door. I nodded. Still exhausted from last night. We disbursed.
My parents grounded me. I thought when I turned twenty-one, I could do what I wanted. I feel disrespected. I didn’t want to lie to my mom, but they wouldn’t have treated me any different. They lump me with Maddie. Yet, she gets away with more. I took my anger out on baking. I felt like I needed comfort food. So I baked some chocolate chip cookies. I heard footsteps behind me. My first instinct was Madison.
“Can I talk to you?”
I turned around to see Andy. Giving him a forced grin. “Sure, what can I help you with?” I asked. Andy inched closer to me. “It’s about your sister. I don’t mean to be rude, but we have been hanging out. I think she liked me. However, I just saw her with one of my friends.” Andy confessed. “You saw her with Pete.” I sighed.
“She was with Pete!”
“Did you not see her with Pete?”
“No, I saw her kissing Patrick.”
My heart shattered. Stomach turned. I sank to my knees. “Are you okay?” Andy asked concerned. I never fell apart so fast. Everything crumbled. “Yeah…peachy.” My voice shook. Trying to hold back tears. Andy sat on the floor. “You saw her with Pete?” He asked calmly. “Andy… I’m sorry. My sister is a whore. Maddie has been fooling around with Joe too.” I explained to him. Andy joined me on the floor. “She does this a lot,” I said. “I thought she liked me.” He sounded bummed. Patrick entered the kitchen. “Gina! I need to talk-“ I stood up and slapped Patrick across the face. Tears fell down my cheeks. “I trusted you.” I sobbed. Andy jumped up, “I’m missing something.”
“Gina, she kissed me. I’m not into her. Believe me.” Patrick held his cheek, “ I loved going out with you last Saturday.” “Fuck off, Patrick.” I cursed. “Wait, are you two dating?” Andy broke in between us. “Yes,” Patrick answered. “No. Not anymore.” I corrected him, “ I don’t ever want to go out with you again.”
“Please, Gina, she kissed me. I care about you. Madison means nothing to me.” He begged.
“I don’t believe you.”
“Please.”
“Madison kissed you first,” Andy spoke to his friend. “ I told her I’m with someone else and she said so was she. Then kissed me. I pushed her away and told her I was with Gina. Maddie screamed at me then left.” Patrick explained. Andy nodded. Patrick apologized to Andy, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you liked her.”
“I thought she liked me. Turns out she likes any guy that walks past her.” He frowned. I turn off the oven and left. Fire coursed through my veins. Wiping my tears away. Marching upstairs. I kicked open the bedroom door to see Madison with Joe. I turned to Joe, “Tell Andy and Pete that she is a minor.” Joe jumped off the bed. “ You said you were 18.” He said angrily, “And you were messing around with my friends too!” He put on his shirt and stormed out. Maddie looked at me horrified. “Hey, sis. You never ratted me out before. You’re not going to tell mom and dad, right?” She rolled off her bed and backed into the wall. “You filthy little whore!” I yelled. Her fake smile dropped. “You never called me that.” She pouted
“Not only did you cheat on four band members, but one of them was interested in me. We were forming a relationship. He really liked me. I was happy. Then you crushed it. Plus you lied to them about your age.” I picked up her hairbrush, “ I can’t do anything with you around! I never had my own life. Everything was about you. Even my boyfriends liked you. My friend ditched me for you! Finally, someone comes along. He likes me for me. Sees me. Only me. And you kiss him. Even when he told you, he was seeing someone else. Then YOU KISSED PATRICK!” I threw her hairbrush at her. I didn’t stop there. I tossed everything at arm’s length. She ducked. I hopped over the bed. Grabbed her hair and slapped her. “Pull a stunt like that again and I’ll make your life a living hell. Madison you are dead to me.” I left her crying.
Walked across the hall, and knocked on their door. Pete answered. “Can we talk?” I asked him. Pete invited me in. Joe sat on the couch with Andy. I gave a small wave. “ I just want to say I’m sorry for the way my slutty sister has been acting. What she did was trashy and disrespectful. I’m not going to tell my father. It wouldn’t be fair to have you kicked out.” I explained to them. Pete gave a tiny grin, “Why are you sorry? She should be the one to apologize. Lying about her age. We can get arrested.” I sighed, “ You’re right. However Madison can’t right now, but I can reassure you that she will.” “And you’re not going to tell your dad?” Joe raised an eyebrow. “No. Even though this is her fault. My father would kick you out and call the police.” I told him, “plus my parents won’t punish her. They will just slap her wrists and say bad.” Andy spoke up,” so you took care of it.” I nodded. Pete stuck out his hand, “ Thanks for that. You didn’t have to clean up after her.” I shook his hand, “ I just didn’t want to see you guys stop being friends because some whore wanted to play a game.” I turned to leave, but Patrick blocked the door. I didn’t even notice him. “I’m sorry I slapped you. I was angry. I still shouldn’t have done that.” I muttered. Patrick looked down. Stepping aside. I exited their apartment. He followed me out. I headed down the hall. “Don’t end this.” He shouted. I paused. Glancing back at him. “Please don’t end this.” Patrick pleaded. “We can’t talk here,” I spoke in a harsh tone. We ran up to the attic. Hiding behind a pile of boxes and a dresser.
“Please, Gina, it can’t end like this.” He took hold of my hand. “She still kissed you. It hurts knowing that.” My voice sounded wet. My breathing grew heavy when I force back tears. Patrick kissed the back of my hand, “ you mean so much to me.” Kissing up my arm. “ I only thought of you.” I felt flushed. Dizzy with anger and lust. “ the kiss meant nothing, but our time together means everything.” Patrick reeled me in and kissed me passionately. “Oh, Patrick.” I moaned in his mouth. We melted to the floor. Making love.
My family sat in the living room with the tv on. I sat on the floor with a book. Mrs. Campbell hobbled in. “I would like to file a complaint,” she said. Richard turned the volume down low. “Go ahead.” He turned his attention to her. “I think you need to teach your daughter how to keep it in her pants. I heard them in the attic and saw them running down the hall.” She informed them. I looked up. Eyes widened. Face beat red. Claire glanced at Madison. “ really Madison?! In the attic? With who?” She snapped at my younger sister. Maddie covered her face. “Not her. Gina and that punk from the band.” Mrs. Campbell corrected my mother. Richard jumped to his feet. Grabbing me by the arm and dragging me to my feet. Shoving me through the house until we busted out the back door to the shed. “Which one of you low-life life punks has been sleeping with my daughter?” He barked. Twisting my arm. Pete, Joe, and Andy exchanged glances. Patrick turned white. “I’ll ask again, which asshole has been screwing with my oldest?” Richard howled, “ It was you, wasn’t it?” He pointed at Patrick. He yanked the collar of Patrick’s shirt. Lifting him. Face to face he screamed, “Who the fuck do you think you are? You think you can get away with it?” Patrick scrunched his face. “Dad, I’m moving out,” I yelled at him. Richard set Patrick down. He swirled around and pouted, “Why? You said you hated living on your own in college.”
“I did, but I thought I would be left to make my own choices. You bully every guy I date and treat me like I’m a child.” I crossed my arms, “ I’m not a little girl. I’m a woman. I make my own decisions.” “But he…” Richard point at Patrick. “We have been dating. I didn’t say anything because I knew you would act like this. Instead of punishing me, you need to respect the choices I make.” I told my father, “ I care about Patrick. He makes me happy. I trust him.” I walked up to Patrick and held his hand. Richard calmed down. He apologized and shuffled inside. “I’ll let you go back to practice.” I kissed his cheek and left. I waited by the porch door to hear them play. Then I went inside to read.
I sat on my bed. Reading. Maddie entered shyly. She approached me. Glancing over the edge of my book, I saw her rocking on her heels. No makeup, baggy clothes, and hair tied back. “ So… when you were fooling around last week, that was with Patrick?” Madison played with her hands, “ and the date too?” “Is there a point?” I snapped. “The way he looks at you. Your smile when he’s around. I should have known. He was trying to tell me. I’ve never been rejected like that. It’s weird. Your boyfriend rejected me. You’re exes never did that.” She sat at the foot of the bed. “So you admitted to kissing my ex-boyfriends.” I raise my eyebrow.
“They kissed me.”
“I am not seeing your point.”
“Patrick isn’t one of them. He has a good heart.”
“I could have told you that.”
“ I wish you did. I would have never made that move.”
To have a conversation with my younger sister, without wanting to rip each other apart was nice. She was able to express herself freely. In return she let me. Madison did apologize to the boys. She made an effort to change the way she asked for attention.
Patrick and I dated for a few months. Until the day came when he had to leave. They had a plan to tour around and promote their new album. He promised to stay in touch. At first, we texted and called every day. As time grew on, there were few calls and almost no texts. My mom ended up getting cancer. Around that time, the calls stopped. I took on twice as much work. The band went on hiatus. My heart still hoped for his return, but the light faded out. He wasn’t coming back. After that, it was a slippery slide into a deep depression. Maddison and my father sent me to a hospital for a little while. My therapist taught me how to deal with heavy emotions. I ended up going to school for baking. Then when I finally had enough, I moved out. Opening a small bakery with an apartment right above. Content with my life. Madison often helped me run the bakery on busy days. Able to put the past behind me.
