Work Text:
There’s a big test coming up at the end of the week. So, naturally, Danny was studying in his studio apartment, listening to a punk rock playlist and bouncing to the beat as he completed the day’s homework and review. This desk chair swiveled as he moved with the beat. Phantom was reading his textbook and lounging on the futon on the other side of the room.
It was a typical afternoon. Rain pitter pattered against the window. They were studying engineering at uni and they’d gotten their only micro studio so Phantom didn’t have to worry about dormies walking in on them. Most of their time was spent on school, so the apartment was pretty bare and very much the picture of poor college students, even if they were studying at MIT. Their ultimate goal was to complete an astronaut training program.
That was still several years away. Danny was also the only one actually able to get a master's degree, but that didn’t stop Phantom from studying all the same.
Danny bobbed his head to the beat. The music played loudly into the room for both of them to listen to, for the most part just background noise to help break the silence.
The next song grabbed Danny’s focus and he let himself take a short break from his homework to appreciate a good song. An infectious song. His foot bounced and suddenly he found himself dancing in his chair.
Small breaks like this were why they listened to music.
As the song came to the last lines, he settled down, grinning. He was prepared to get back to work when the next song picked up as soon as the last with a fast paced beat. Start Wearing Purple. A favorite. He figured one more song wouldn’t hurt.
30 seconds in, the beat picked up again. Suddenly the lyrics demanded he sing along. “-Or your sanity and wits they all vanish,~”
He glanced in Phantom’s direction as he spun in his chair, grinning as he poorly sang, “It’s just a matter of time~”
Phantom glanced up from his text, raising an eyebrow as the side of his mouth twitched upwards.
Danny drummed his hands along his desk as turned around, “So, yeah! Start Wearing purple, wearing purple! ~ Start wearing purple for me now…!” He grinned at Phantom when he saw him watching. “All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish, ~ I promise, it’s just a matter of time! ~”
The textbook slipped from Phantom’s hands as he choked back a laugh at Danny’s enthusiastic off-key singing.
“I know you since you were a twenty and I was twenty,” Danny sang to Phantom, his whole body dancing to the beat, “But thought that some years from now~ A purple little, little lady will be perfect, For dirty old and useless clown. ~”
Phantom laughed as Danny jumped up, shaking his hips and banging his head.
“So yeah, start wearing purple, wearing purple!!! Start wearing purple for me now! ~All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish~! I promise, it's just a matter of time.” For the next part, he turned and grabbed his pencil as his mic, just in time to butcher, “I know it all from tired genies, to da fu call, From Lozah-skin to Pausc-poa-too, heh ah, plansalse, stort-heh-hah-, cho ba so oh shot-ti mo ko-moo!”
Wheezing, Phantom slapped at hand over his mouth at Danny’s complete gibberish he’d just sang at the top of his lungs. He swung his feet off the couch and sat forward, slapping his knee. His cheeks hurt and his eyes watered.
Danny jumped right back in with the next chorus, banging his head and grinning so hard, “Start wearing purple, wearing purple!!! ~ Start wearing purple for me now ~ All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish!” He sang, holding Phantom’s gaze, “I promise, it's just a matter of time.~
“So, yeah, heheh,” Danny sang, reaching over to grab Phantom’s hang and pulling him into the dance, “Start wearing purple wearing purple, wearing purple ~” They rocked their hips together to the beat, “Start wearing purple for me now~ So why don't you start wearing purple? ~Why don't you start wearing purple?” As the violin strung out the words, Danny barely held it together as he sang into his pencil, leaning into Phantom. His voice warbled, making them both laugh even harder.
He stepped back, singing dramatically, “Start wearing purple for me now!”
And then just danced wildly for a moment, bobbing his head as they waited for the chorus to begin anew. Phantom wheezed with laughter, green in the face, and eyes sparkling with mirth.
“Ahah! Parti!!!”
“All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish! ~ I promise, it's just a matter of time!” Danny sang, bouncing on his toes and strumming his pencil, “So Fio-Fio-Fioletta! Eta! ~Da-da-dada ma ta mo-ya! ~” His gibberish spilled forth with great enthusiasm, “Eh, ah kya-too, vo tuee! ~ Ah hey my poeto k dinam!!!”
Phantom laughed his ass off and grabbed Danny’s hips as he danced closer, swaying with him.
“Oh, baidehad it babheohul dooo~”
“So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple, ~ Start wearing purple for me now,” Danny swayed with Phantom as the final chorus played. “All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish ~ I promise, it's just a matter of time~”
As the song came to a close, Danny laughed, breathless and giddy. He dramatically fell into Phantom’s chest, wrapping his arms around his shoulders and laughing with his ghost as they clung to each other.
The next song started up, but they ignored it in favor of catching their breath. Phantom’s joyous breath against his ear was a welcomed chill against his hot skin.
Danny leaned back, resting his hands on the back of Phantom’s neck, grinning. He opened his mouth to say, “-ah” But Phantom didn’t give him a chance as he leaned in, capturing his lips in a breathless kiss.
Phantom’s hands shifted, one sliding up the back of Danny’s t-shirt, and the other through his hair, to the back of his head, holding him. He gasped for breath and caressed Danny’s lips with his own. His core raced as ice spread through his veins, desire driving him mad.
Arching his back, Danny moaned as Phantom’s tongue danced across the tip of his tongue, slow and dirty. He carded his fingers through Phantom’s wispy white air, pressing closer. Desire burned in his chest, his heart racing with new excitement.
Phantom hummed as Danny’s moan tingled against his lips, making him light headed and unable to catch his breath. He dug his fingers into Danny’s lower back, pulling him with him as he stepped back into the futon behind him. His knees buckled as he brushed against the edge and he fell backward, bringing Danny with him.
Gasping, Danny reached out to catch him on the backrest. His sharp reflexes kept him from collapsing into Phantom and crushing him. He braced himself with one knee on the edge of the futon, a hand behind Phantom’s head, and one buried behind his ghost’s neck, Phantom’s hands resting on his hips.
He settled into Phantom’s lap and kissed his partner deeply. Phantom’s cold core made his body burn with desire. In the back of his mind though, the music playing reminded him that he had to study. He pulled back to take a deep breath and pressed his forehead against Phantom’s. They both grinned.
“That was the hottest thing I think I’ve ever seen,” Phantom said, kissing Danny’s nose, “and the worst singing ever!”
They both just laughed.
Phantom was the best. “You know you love me though.”
Phantom caressed his cheeks, “Of course, I love you.” He kissed his lips sweetly. “But it’s time for you to get off my lap and get back to studying. You have a test coming up.”
“Ugh! We always have a test coming!”
“Exactly!”
