Chapter 1: The Christmas party

Chapter Text

Connor never would’ve predicted that his first kiss would happen in the precinct bathroom. It was even harder to fathom that it happened with Gavin Reed.

Reed was, in Connor’s carefully formulated opinion, the biggest prick in the DPD. He constantly went out of his way to give Connor a hard time and never cared who was around to see it. Though it’s true that most people were comfortable treating androids as objects before the revolution, in the weeks since it’s passing almost everyone else welcomed Connor back to the precinct with a nervous politeness. Gavin on the other hand had only gotten worse. Connor never tried to provoke him, but his existence alone seemed to be enough to irritate the other detective. And Gavin seemed to enjoy his role as Connor’s personal bully. Connor on the other hand, couldn’t risk any workplace altercations. His new position as a paid employee at the DPD was tentative at best. So, Connor did his best to avoid Gavin whenever possible.

So how did they end up pressed against one another in the station bathroom, catching they’re breath between rough, feverish kisses?

Good question.

It all started at the DPD Christmas party. Hank had tried his best to convince Connor not to go, but Connor was rarely convinced of anything. Connor insisted that work-parties were important for social bonding and group cohesion and skipping such events would only further ostracize him from his fellow coworkers. Hank didn’t try to talk him out of it after that. He knew the android well enough to know there would be no changing his mind.

Connor on the other hand, had made the mistake of assuming Hank would be attending the party as well. He had just explained the importance of it, after all. And surely, Hank understood that he was Connor’s sole ally in the precinct. He wouldn’t leave Connor to face the revelries on his own. Right?

Wrong.

Hank didn’t like the way Connor was treated in the precinct, but they both learned quickly that trying to defend him would only make people like Gavin double their efforts to knock him down a peg. As much as it was his instinct to protect the android, his place in this world was something Connor was going to have to work out for himself. Connor understood that, even thanked Hank for staying out of it when things bubbled over with Gavin in the short time since Connor’s returned to the DPD.

Maybe it was selfish. But Hank decided not to mention that he was skipping the party simply because he didn’t want to square off against Connor’s unrivalled puppy-dog eyes. That was a battle he rarely won, and nothing was going to make Hank Anderson willingly attend an office Christmas party.

Skip ahead to December 23rd, 9:08 PM at the DPD station and the Christmas party was in full swing. Even in the bathroom, Connor could hear the music and drunken laughter emanating from the break room. The party was much livelier than he had expected it to be. He knew there would be alcohol involved, that was a staple for human celebrations, even so, he hadn’t expected everyone to feel so comfortable with getting intoxicated at the workplace. If he thought people were difficult to talk to before, it was even harder to hold a conversation when they were slurring their words and repeatedly forgetting what they were talking about. But no matter how uncomfortable or out of place he felt, he couldn’t allow himself to hide in the bathroom all night.

So, he headed for the bathroom door, but it swung open before he could reach it. Connor felt himself tense when he came face to face with Gavin Reed.

“The fuck are you doing in here? This isn’t the little robot’s room” Gavin sneered and continued walking forward, forcing Connor to step back to avoid a head on collision.

“I was looking for Lieutenant Anderson” Connor answered calmly. In truth he knew Hank had left hours ago, but he wasn’t about to admit to Gavin that he’d been hiding from the party. Gavin would get a kick out of that.

“Of course, you were” Gavin scoffed. His eyes were zeroed in on the android as though he’d come to the bathroom just to find him. He glared up at him with unmatched disdain. “Have you checked the break room? There’s free booze, he’s bound to appear.”

“You shouldn’t talk about your superiors like that” Connor told him. He hadn’t realized he’d still been walking backwards until his back met the far wall of the bathroom. Nevertheless, he gave no reaction. “It reflects poorly on your character” Connor spoke as though he was genuinely giving some advice.

The androids unwavering tone, and nearly blank expression made Gavin’s blood boil. Something in the back of his mind insisted that Connor was doing it purposely, that he always was.

“Look who’s talking!” Gavin sneered and poked Connor’s chest. “I’m a fucking detective. You’re here as a fucking publicity stunt, to fill our android-inclusion quota.”

“That’s not true” Connor said, his brow furrowing just slightly. “Captain Fowler knows what I’m capable of. I just haven’t had a case yet” he insisted.

Gavin smirked and looked Connor up and down with a shameless, predatory stare. “Yeah? Who else knows what your capable of?” He laughed. “Anderson?”

“You’ve been drinking” Connor blurted out.

They were standing so close now that he could detect the traces of alcohol on Gavin’s breath

“No shit I’ve been drinking, it’s a fucking party. Everyone’s drinking. Everyone except for you. Because you’re not. A real. Person.” Gavin seethed.

“I’m..” There was just a second where Connor let his voice trail off as he eyes scanned Gavin’s expression curiously. “Just as real as you are” Connor finished his statement carefully then resumed studying the man in front of him.

Something in Gavin’s presence had shifted, his eyes had darkened in a way Connor didn’t recognize. Even stranger, the room had fallen quiet. Gavin was always quick with a comeback and refused to have anything besides the last word. Yet he stood quietly, staring up at the android as Connor stared down back down at him.

Before Connor could finish deciphering the look in his eyes, Gavin had his hand on the back of Connor’s neck. He closed the small distance between them and pulled Connor down into an angry, domineering kiss.

Connor couldn’t react. The moment their lips touched his circuits were flooded with a detailed chemical break down of everything that was or had been in Gavin’s mouth.

GAVIN REED- D.O.B January 18th, 2005 Associations- DPD (Detective), Criminal record- N/A

The information kept coming, flooding his processors and leaving him frozen and overwhelmed. Connor wasn’t designed to kiss, until now his mouth had been reserved for forensic analysis. It was too much, he thought he might short circuit, but it only lasted a second or two, then the errors cleared, and he could think again. More importantly, he could feel.

He felt a strong, calloused hand clinging to the back of his neck with a grip that might’ve bruised him if he was human. He could feel Gavin Reed’s tongue forcing its way into his mouth. He could feel Reed’s chest vibrate against his own as he chuckled. The detective was clearly amused by the idea that he had left the android so stunned that he forgot how to move.

And he was right. It wasn’t just an overload of information that left Connor frozen. It wasn’t just a matter of design; it was a matter of disbelief. He knew with deviancy would come the opportunity to experience romantic attraction, but he figured he’d have to be patient for something like that to happen to him. Making friends proved difficult enough, romance seemed miles off. The last thing he expected was for it to start here and now with detective Reed of all people. He’d never been so unprepared.

Probability and predictions be damned, someone wanted him. It was exhilarating, exciting and exulting. The feelings themselves were just as overwhelming as the influx of data he had only just overcame. To make things even less fathomable, Gavin Reed wanted him. His social relations module would’ve marked Reed as the least likely person to have a romantic interest in him, but it only goes to show that real emotion couldn’t be simplified to statistics. Emotion was free from the constraints of logic, and Connor felt free too. Could it be that all this time he had simply misread Reed’s attraction as aggression? Perhaps they didn’t have to be enemies. Connor never wanted that anyways. Whatever this was, this was much better.

Thirium- RK-series prototype, model RK800, serial #313 248 317.

Connor was stolen from his giddy train of thought when he registered a sample of his own thirium. Without thinking he pulled away and touched a hand to his mouth. He stared with wide eyes at the small dot of blue-blood on his fingers. Reed had bitten him? Reed had bitten him, he realized.

He looked up from his fingers to find Gavin smirking and laughing at his bewilderment.

“You bit me” Connor stated, looking back at the blue stain on his fingers.

“You taste like plastic, plastic” Gavin laughed.

There was a baffling moment where Connor was left wondering if there was something else he should taste like.

“Huh, yellow” Gavin said, noting how Connor’s LED was spinning. “That a good thing or a bad thing?” He asked, raising a brow.

Connor knew immediately that he had come to a crossroads. Whatever he said next would decide whether this budding romance would come a swift end and Gavin would return to his prized role as Connor’s tormentor or whether he might stoke the flames and by chance, be kissed again.

“…good” Connor answered quietly.

“Good” Gavin repeated hungrily. “I’ve wanted to do this since cyberlife first dropped you off”

Connor blinked, eyes widening just slightly. “Really?” He asked.

“Yeah, but I figured Anderson already was. If you’ve got the right equipment, that is” Gavin muttered distractedly.

The next thing Connor knew, Gavin had his palm pressed firmly against his crotch. Connor’s breath caught in his throat. Again, he froze.

“hm” Gavin hummed, he seemed to have found what he was looking for. “You do that deer in headlights thing too well, you know that?” he smiled as he slid his hand around the android’s hip and slipped it down the back of Connor’s pants.

Connor stumbled forward against Gavin. “What are you-“ the question died on his lips when Reed slid his fingers between Connor’s cheeks and promptly found the hidden opening he’d been looking for.

“Just checking” Gavin murmured with a smug look on his face.

Connor didn’t answer, but Gavin felt a shaky breath brush his neck. Gavin slowly removed his hand from Connor’s pants and leaned back just enough to get a look at the android’s face. He’d come to expect one of two expressions, a pensive, calculated shifting of dark eyes, or an infuriatingly blank stare. What he saw now was something entirely different. Connors eyes were wide, his brows pushed together and raised, his lips parted in a silent gasp. Most peculiar of all, there was a light blue flush spreading across his freckled cheeks.

“Holy shit…is that…are you blushing?” Gavin asked, his voice quiet with genuine curiosity.

WARNING- Irregular pulse detected in Thirium pump.

Connor saw the red warning appear in his peripheral vision, but he quickly cleared it. He knew he wasn’t damaged. If anything, it felt like the opposite.

Connor shook his head “It’s…just a glitch” he said quietly.

Gavin grabbed Connor by the chin and looked him over. “Fuck me…” he sighed. He looked at Connor’s nervous brown eyes and wondered how he had resisted the android this long. “Do you do this blushing virgin act with everyone?” he asked.

Connor tried to shake his head, but Gavin was holding him in place. “No” he had to answer. “No one’s ever touched me” he admitted. “Not like that”

The way that made Gavin’s smirk grow into a toothy grin made Connor’s stomach turn and his chest buzz with excitement.

“That’s a fucking shock” Gavin stepped impossibly closer so that their bodies were flush against each other. “’cuz whatever Cyberlife nerd designed you was a real pervert” He muttered.

Connor couldn’t help but glance down at himself and wonder if there was really something about himself that he had never noticed. Was there something about him that was innately…perverted? Luckily, that uncomfortable train of thought was interrupted by Gavin kissing him again. Connor flinched away this time as he was met with the same overwhelming string of data from earlier. His apparent reluctance only seemed to encourage the human. Connor was dragged back into the kiss by a strong hand on the back of his head.

Connor tried to kiss back but even when the overload of forensic data cleared, his attempt was clumsy and unskilled. Gavin didn’t seem to mind; he was pressing against the android as much as he could and stealing little breaths between kisses that grew hungrier and more impatient with every passing second.

Connor grabbed two fistfuls of Gavin’s leather jacket in an attempt to ground himself, and because he had no idea what to do with his hands. Gavin on the hand never missed a beat. His hands went straight to Connor’s narrow hips.

It was when Gavin pushed him back against the bathroom wall that Connor briefly returned to his senses. With his hands against Gavin’s chest, he pushed him back as gently as he could.

“We shouldn’t do this here” Connor said, glancing at the bathroom door. Anyone could walk in at any moment. What they were doing was incredibly inappropriate behaviour for the work-place. Connor’s head was spinning, he couldn’t believe he’d let it go on for as long as he had. And yet, he was still hoping it wouldn’t end here.

Gavin followed Connor’s gaze to the door “Shit, yeah” He nodded breathlessly. They agreed on something or once. Gavin turned back to the android to see Connor waiting, looking at him expectantly. Gavin smirked. “Don’t worry, I’m not done with you” he muttered.

Connor just rose his brows slightly and tilted his head, waiting for a better explanation, a promise that this moment was going to slip away from them.

“Let’s go, just…don’t let it look like you’re following me” Gavin instructed then turned and headed for the bathroom door.

Connor was quick to follow. “Where are we going?” He asked urgently.

“I’m taking you home, plastic” Gavin answered without looking back.

Connor’s lips curled into a lopsided smile. “Your home?”

Gavin looked over at him with an impatient glare, “obviously.”

“I’ll call a cab” Connor said eagerly.
