Work Text:

“Did you tell them yet?”

Oikawa let his eyes space out, looking at the textbook in front of him. He could feel Iwaizumi staring at him, but refused to look at him. He just stared at the textbook, all the words muddling together.

“No,” came the quiet reply.

Iwaizumi sighed and lifted himself up from the bed, so he was sitting next to Oikawa now. Again, Oikawa avoided Iwaizumi’s eyes at all cost.

Iwaizumi licked his lips: “Look Tooru, I don’t want to pressure you…”

Oikawa let go of the book he was holding and grabbed Iwaizumi’s hands instead. “No, it’s just that, my sister is coming over next week and I want to tell them when everyone’s gonna be there.”

There was a moment of silence between them, both trying to find the words to say next. Oikawa squeezed Iwaizumi’s hands harder. “Believe me I want nothing more than to tell them we’re together, it’s just…”

Tooru thought back to all the attempts he made to try and find out if his parents are homophobic or not. None of them went as he initially planned.

His first attempt was two weeks ago and he made up a movie about two guys, who worked in space and they fell in love, then one of them found out the other was an alien. His mom focused on the fact that one was an alien and his dad just raised his eyebrows and said he had a bad taste in movies. Not as planned.

Then, a few days later he tried to matchmake two of his sister’s classmates together, telling his parents he heard they were in a relationship now. He completely forgot the fact that one of them was arrested for dealing drugs not even a year after he graduated. So all he got to hear was a mouthful from his parents about how he should never do that. Not as planned.

His most recent attempt was reading them a news article, which was absolutely useless as they just started fighting about who put so much salt in the soup, so he didn’t even bother to try again. At last, not as planned.

Almost a month since they started dating and he made no progress in telling his parents. It bothered him, much more than he showed on the outside, but he couldn’t just risk it. He needed to know for sure, before doing so for his, and most importantly Iwaizumi’s safety.

“I love you Hajime,” Oikawa finally looked at his boyfriend.

This time it was Iwaizumi who diverted his eyes somewhere else.

“I know you do,” he smiled, “I love you more though.”

Oikawa narrowed his eyes at the smirk Iwaizumi had on his face. He lunged forward and fell on the bed, Iwaizumi with him. They stared at each other for a second, before bursting out laughing and Oikawa falling to Iwaizumi’s side. He’ll do it. He’ll tell his parents. For Hajime.

“Why are you staring at me like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like…” he stopped, before a blush spread on his face, “ah, fuck it.”

He grabbed Oikawa’s face and captured his lips with a sweet kiss. And for the rest of the evening, the book lay forgotten under Oikawa’s bed as he had more important business to attend to.

-

The day had started as any normal day. Oikawa woke up in the morning like he did every morning, he did his skincare and brushed his teeth. He got ready, ate breakfast, said goodbye to his mom and went out to meet Iwaizumi to walk to school with him.

“You’re late,” Iwaizumi frowned.

Just like any other day. “Only two minutes.”

Iwaizumi sighed and started walking towards their school, Oikawa catching up with him. They walked beside each other like they always did. “Any tests today?”

“Yeah, I have an English test today.”

“You’re gonna do great then, Iwa-chan, you were always better than me at English.”

Iwaizumi smiled and Oikawa let himself daydream about how it would be if he could kiss it off his face. And then take his hand and walk to school where every one of his fangirls would be jealous that Iwaizumi had taken his heart.

But that was just a daydream. The reality was that they were just friends. And if that meant Iwaizumi would stay by his side, Oikawa would accept that. Not really enthusiastically, but he did.

As they walked into the school they made plans to meet during the lunch break and then went off to their classes. Oikawa waved hello to all his classmates as he walked into the class. As he sat down at his desk, his classmate Osaki came to him.

“You need something Osaki-chan?”

“My friend told me to give you this,” she held out a small pink envelope to him.

Another confession, another normal day.

“Well, tell her I’m flattered…”

“It’s not for you actually, but for your friend. Izumi-san was his name?”

“Iwaizumi?” Oikawa thought out loud.

“Yeah, I think that’s him.”

Oikawa stared at the envelope in disbelief. What was going on? How many confessions did Iwaizumi get? He never even mentioned one. Did he not trust him enough to tell him about them? Or what if he did, Oikawa just got more and Iwaizumi never got to tell him that he got one or-

“Oikawa-san,” Osaki frowned at him, the hand with the envelope still outstretched, “will you give it to him or not?”

Oikawa blinked, his bangs covering one of his eyes: “Why won’t she give it to him herself?”

Osaki scratched behind her head. “She’s kinda shy. Okay no, very shy. And since you two are such good friends, and you’re in my class so…”

Good friends, right. He had no right to tell Iwaizumi who to and not to date. He took the envelope out of Osaki’s hand with a fake smile. Then he told her he would make sure it got to the recipient and as soon as she bowed before him and went back to her seat, the teacher came in.

Oikawa immediately forgot about the confession letter as soon as lunch break rolled around. He was too excited to see Iwaizumi, Makki and Mattsun to care. He met them in the schoolyard where they met every day.

“Hey guys, have you had a nice day so far?”

“We were before you and your pretty face showed up,” Makki chewed on a piece of chicken he was eating.

“Aww, I always knew you were jealous of my beauty Makki,” Oikawa flipped his hair and sat down.

Oikawa looked at Iwaizumi from the corner of his eye. He was making a weird face looking down into his bento. He thought by now, he would have made a snarky remark but nothing came out of him.

They enjoyed their lunch and when the break was over, they went back to their classes. The rest of Oikawa’s classes passed quickly and he was excited, since he had volleyball practice today. After the last bell rang he grabbed his stuff and was out of the class like a rocket.

When he came to the locker room, the only ones there were Mattsun and Iwaizumi. Oikawa greeted them and went to change. Mattsun said something to Iwaizumi which earned him an elbow to his ribs, but Mattsun snickered and Iwaizumi just left, to warm up.

“He’s so funny, this guy,” Mattsun chuckled pointing his thumb at the door Iwaizumi just went through.

“Who? Iwa-chan?” Oikawa raised an eyebrow.

Mattsun, who was tying his shoelaces, looked up at him and suppressed a laugh. “Yeah.”

Oikawa raised an eyebrow at him, but otherwise, he paid him no mind. He got ready and stepped out into the gym, the confession letter forgotten in his school bag.

The practice went better than usual but that might have been due to the fact that Kyoutani was absent and wasn’t causing any of the usual chaos. After the practice, he tried to speak with everyone individually on how to improve themselves. After he sent the last player, Kindaichi, home, he just stood in the middle of the gym and smiled to himself.

“You’re really good at your job you know?”

“Huh?” Oikawa turned around.

“Like being captain and stuff, it really suits you.”

Oikawa waved a hand dramatically in the air: “Oh, Iwa-chan, you’re gonna make me blush.”

There was a slight slap on his arm. “Shut up and help me get the net down.”

Iwaizumi stomped over to the other side of the net and Oikawa thought he couldn’t be more adorable at the moment. He mulled over Iwaizumi’s previous words in his head and just hoped he didn’t look like a high-school girl with a crush, when he covered his face with his hands and silently screamed.

He helped Iwaizumi put the net down and Iwaizumi went to put it in the storage room. After he came out they both started to clean up all the volleyballs on the floor.

“So how was your day, Iwa-chan? Did you do well on the test?”

“It was okay. What about you? Any girls spilling their heart out for you?” Iwaizumi mocked.

Oikawa stopped in his tracks and felt like lightning just struck him. Oh no, the confession. He thought of Osaki’s words and he felt kinda bad for the girl who wrote it. He gestured for Iwaizumi to wait and ran to the locker room.

He dug through his school bag and as soon as he found the pink envelope, his heart constricted. He gulped and with heavy legs, he went back to the gym. Iwaizumi was just putting some balls away when he saw him. His eyes travelled to the envelope he was holding and frowned.

“You don’t have to rub them in my face Shittykawa.”

“It’s…”Oikawa swore he could hear the blood rushing through his head, “actually for you.”

Iwaizumi frowned even more, if that was possible. He took a step closer and looked at it. It was probably now drenched in Oikawa’s sweat since he felt like he just dipped his hands in water.

“Is this a prank?”

“I wish it was,” came the reply out of Oikawa’s mouth before he could stop himself.

Iwaizumi looked beyond confused. He looked from Oikawa to the letter in his hands. Eventually, he decided to reach out and grab it.

But Oikawa pulled it away from him. It was like an instinct. Iwaizumi frowned and reached for the letter once more. Again, Oikawa stepped back and held the letter so close to his chest, he almost crumbled it.

“Oikawa… Give me the paper,” he growled.

Oikawa sucked in a breath and as Iwaizumi reached for the paper again, he put his arm up, holding the confession above his head. He was really thankful for being slightly taller than Iwaizumi at the moment.

Iwaizumi shot his hands out to rightfully grab his confession, but Oikawa didn’t let him. He didn’t know what possessed him at the moment, but he just couldn’t let it get to Iwaizumi’s hands. He felt bad for being like this.

But he knew he would feel even worse if Iwaizumi opened it and after reading it, would ask the girl on a date and then they’d start dating and then he’d ask him to choose a ring for him to propose with, then be asked to be the best man for their wedding and maybe even to be the godfather for their children.

Okay, maybe he was overreaching a bit, but that could be possible. And he’d end up single forever because he knew he wouldn’t be able to get over Iwaizumi. So he just subconsciously kept dragging the confession letter away from his best friend.

“Tooru!”

That single word threw Oikawa off balance. No. Quite literally. As soon as his first name came out of Iwaizumi’s mouth, he stumbled and fell back, Iwaizumi right on top of him. And when Oikawa opened his eyes, he never looked as beautiful as he did now, panting on top of him and everything.

He hit his head. He was pretty sure he hit his head because what he did next was out of his mind. He dropped the confession letter on the floor, where he was still holding it above his head and instead grabbed the sides of Iwaizumi’s face. And before Iwaizumi could say anything, he leaned up and kissed him.

He didn’t really have the time to register what he was doing before Iwaizumi was kissing him back. It was really messy and both of them felt out of it at moment, but it was all worth it. Oikawa couldn’t find the words to describe it, he just knew he felt ecstatic.

“I think you hit your head,” Iwaizumi said after they pulled apart.

“Yeah, I think I did,” agreed Oikawa.

Iwaizumi licked his lips and made a move backwards to sit up, offering Oikawa a hand to take him off the floor. They sat there in silence for a while, trying to process what just happened.

“I think we should talk about this.”

“Okay, you go first.”

“You’re the one who kissed me!”

“Well, you’re the one who kissed me back!”

Iwaizumi glared at him and Oikawa realised what he had just done and he covered his face with his hands and fell back down. Iwaizumi got worried and went over to look at him.

“You okay?”

“I’ve been in love with you since Junior high,” Oikawa blurted out.

He peeked through his fingers to see Iwaizumi leaning in front of him, a shocked look on his face. “J-junior high?”

Oikawa just nodded. Iwaizumi sat back again rubbing a hand over his face: “Junior high…”

“What is that like… bad?” Oikawa sat up too.

“It’s just that,” he looked at Oikawa, “we could have been together so much sooner.”

Oikawa got on his knees and scooted to Iwaizumi. He took his face into his palms and gave him a quick peck on the forehead. “Let’s not dwell on the past.”

The confession letter lay forgotten on the ground up until the morning, when Osaki came to Oikawa’s desk and he told her with a big smile on his face that Iwaizumi was not interested.

-

The breeze was flowing through Oikawa’s hair as he sat on the swing overlooking his nephew and his boyfriend playing in the park. He smiled at the thought of how much Takeru liked Iwaizumi.

Would Iwaizumi want kids? Oikawa knew it was probably a reach, but what was so bad about considering it? He knew Iwaizumi would be great with kids. Having grown up with no siblings and just a mom, he knew he’d try to give them as much love as possible.

Would he want a daughter or a son? His initial thought was a son, but he could imagine him with a daughter too. Maybe they could have both.

“Whatcha thinking about?”

Oikawa was startled at the sudden appearance of Iwaizumi next to him. He whipped his head to the side to get his bangs out of his face. “Nothing.”

Iwaizumi reached out and put his hair behind his ear, brushing it out of his face. He let his hand linger there and Oikawa gently took it and put it back, to Iwaizumi’s side.

“Takeru’s here.”

Iwaizumi sighed: “When are you going to tell them? The week’s almost over.”

“I know I just…” Oikawa stared off into the distance.

“I already told you if you need support I can come to-”

Oikawa waved his hands in front of him: “No, no I said I’ll do it myself.”

“You said it yourself,” Iwaizumi laughed. He looked to the back where Takeru was. Oikawa reached out to look too, after all, he was the one who was supposed to babysit him, but Iwaizumi took his face and gave him a quick kiss.

“Don’t worry Takeru wasn’t looking.”

“What was that for?”

Iwaizumi settled his hands on Oikawa’s shoulders. “Courage? Or just because I wanted to.”

Oikawa smiled. "Thanks."

After a while it was time for Oikawa and Takeru to go home, so he took Takeru and with Iwaizumi they left the park. They walked for a while before Takeru looked at them and narrowed his eyes.

"Are you two dating?"

Oikawa quickly checked his hand, just in case it was somehow holding Iwaizumi's, but both his hands were in the pockets of his jacket. He started blabbering and gesturing wildly in the air.

"No, why would you even think that?"

"I saw you two kissing," Takeru said like it was nothing.

Oikawa turned to Iwaizumi with a hot glare in his eyes and he could see that even Iwaizumi looked a bit panicked.

"Yesterday, when Hajime-kun was leaving, I saw you kissing on the front porch," he said and continued walking.

After he gave Iwaizumi a quick apology look, he stepped in front of Takeru and grabbed him by either side of his arms.

"Takeru, you can't tell anyone. Not mom, not dad and especially not grandma and grandpa."

"Why?" Takeru raised his eyebrows.

"Because they don't know."

"Then tell them."

Oikawa looked down at his shoes and after a deep breath looked back at his nephew: "Look Takeru, some people don't think it's okay for two boys to be in a relationship… And I don't know if grandma and grandpa do, okay?"

"Then ask them."

"No, Takeru it's not that simple."

Then, Iwaizumi grabbed his arm and lifted him up: "Give the boy a break, he won't tell anyone, will you Takeru?"

Takeru shook his head vigorously but Oikawa wasn't convinced one bit. Even though he was on edge they continued walking until they reached Iwaizumi's house which was not really far from theirs.

Takeru ran to hug Iwaizumi as they parted and then Iwaizumi leaned into Oikawa's space a bit too much.

"Whoa, what are you doing?" Oikawa leaned back.

"The cat's out of the bag," he pointed at Takeru with his chin.

"I won't look," Takeru covered his eyes with his hands and for an even better measure, bowed his head down.

Oikawa gave Iwaizumi a quick peck to the corner of his lips and wanted to turn around to go, but Iwaizumi stopped him by grabbing his arm.

"Tooru, I can see how much it's stressing you out. I think you should tell them."

"Well, I don't know how," Oikawa said quietly.

He took Takeru by his hand, and as they waved goodbye to Iwaizumi, Oikawa felt a sharp pain in his heart. He really wanted nothing more than to tell his parents but at the same time, he didn't want it to end badly.

"It's gonna be okay uncle Tooru," Takeru said with a smile.

And Oikawa felt a bit better, until dinner rolled around. At first, it was okay, his mom made one of his favourite meals and he was actually excited to dig in and eat. That was until Takeru opened his mouth in the middle of it.

"Mom, can two boys date each other?"

Oikawa choked on the piece of vegetable he was chewing and his mom had to pat his back for him to be able to breathe again. But even after that, he felt like all the air in his lungs turned to poisonous gas.

Oikawa's sister, Kaori, frowned: "Why do you ask?"

Oh no, this was the moment. This was the moment Takeru was going to expose him and tell the whole table he was gay and his parents would throw him out on the street and-

"I was just wondering."

Kaori licked her lips.

"Tooru do you need some water, you look like you're going to explode," Kaori's husband, Makoto asked.

Tooru forcibly laughed: "Yeah I'm fine it's just the vegetable I almost choked on."

He nodded and went back to eating. Takeru was still intensely looking at his mom waiting for an answer. Kaori looked over at Tooru and then at their parents.

"Well… Yes they can, I know it's not what you usually see, but I don't know why they couldn't be together."

She looked at their parents again: "Right?"

"I mean, I don't see why not. They're not doing anything illegal are they?" Oikawa's dad said.

"I think everyone should be able to love who they want, no matter the gender," Oikawa's mom smiled at Takeru.

"Oh okay, thanks," Takeru wasted no time picking up his chopsticks again and devouring everything on his plate.

Oikawa felt as if the world had stopped. This was it, this was his confirmation. He was going to do it. He was going to tell them. Tomorrow.

-

"So do you want to tell them or should I?"

"Ugh, I don't know, what if they hate us then."

"Hanamaki and Matsukawa are like the least homophobic people ever. If I didn't know them I'd think they're gay."

"Don't make assumptions like that Hajime."

"What? I'm just saying."

"Hey guys!"

Hanamaki and Matsukawa were waving at them from the distance. The lunch break started just a while ago and Oikawa and Iwaizumi decided to tell their friends they got together after the gym incident.

"How's it going?"

"It's fine," Iwaizumi answered.

Oikawa just nodded and smiled at them. But his friends weren't stupid, no matter how much everyone said they were.

"Are you feeling okay, Oikawa? You look ner-"

"We're dating!"

Hanamaki looked at him with wide eyes, and Matsukawa, who wasn't properly paying attention until now, lifted his head too.

"Well, that's one way to do it," Iwaizumi grumbled.

"Shut up," Oikawa shoved him.

"Wait, for real?" Hanamaki's mouth opened.

Oikawa grabbed Iwaizumi's hand triumphantly and lifted it up in the air: "Yep."

"No fucking way," Matsukawa's jaw dropped.

"Well, it was about damn time!" Hanamaki shouted.

"I spent two and a half years looking at you two idiots pining over each other every single fucking day, you better be together," he pointed a fork at Oikawa accusingly.

"Wait, you knew?" Oikawa startled.

"Of course we knew," Matsukawa joined in, “in fact Iwa here, told us he has a crush on you like two months ago.”

“I thought we were going to keep that between us,” Iwaizumi gritted through his teeth.

Oikawa turned to him with a sly grin on his face: “So you had a crush on me?”

“Oh, don’t act like you haven't been crushing on me since Junior high.”

“Junior high?” Makki looked at them baffled.

“Damn, when’s the wedding then?”

“When it’s legal probably,” Oikawa replied with a tinge of bitterness.

He didn’t mean to make the mood worse, but he was being honest, was there something bad about that?

-

Before he went to bed himself, he made a stop at Takeru’s room, who was supposed to be sleeping now, but he knew his nephew’s sleeping habits. He lightly opened the door and quickly snuck inside.

“Mom?”

“It’s me,” Tooru sat on the edge of the bed.

“Uncle Tooru,” he sat up rubbing the sleep off of his eyes.

“I’m sorry, did I wake you up?”

“No, I wasn’t sleeping,” he grabbed the bedsheets, “what are you doing here?”

“I came to thank you, for today.”

Takeru smiled lightly: “Anything for my favourite uncle.”

“I’m your only uncle.”

“Yeah, exactly.”

Tooru giggled and then stood up from the bed. He gave Takeru a quick kiss on the forehead and wished him a good night. Before he left though, Takeru called out to him: “Can I call Hajime-kun uncle Hajime now?”

Tooru stopped in the doorway: “If he lets you.”

As soon as he got to his room, he fell on the bed and took his phone, dialling Iwaizumi’s number in an instant. It rang for a while until Iwaizumi picked up.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Hajime, you are not going to believe what just happened…”

And with that, he told him the whole story about what happened at dinner today. He could hear Iwaizumi laughing at the other end when he told him about how stressed he was that Takeru was going to out him. But in the end, when he told him his plan to tell his family tomorrow, Iwaizumi’s excitement matched with Oikawa.

“Okay, I have to get going now, but I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Yeah,” Oikawa bit his lip, “we’ll be official then.”

Iwaizumi laughed through the phone and Oikawa’s insides melted. He knew what he was doing was risky, even though his parents said what they said. But he was doing it for Iwaizumi and that was the most important part of it.

“I love you,” he heard through the speaker.

“I love you too Hajime, good night.”

It was indeed a good night, because Oikawa went to sleep with peace in his mind, unlike all the days before.

By the time morning rolled around, he was in a very good mood. Today was the day. Should he say it during lunch? Or should he wait until dinner? Nope. Enough waiting. He’s telling them the first chance he gets.

At least that’s what he thought until the actual moment came around. They were seated around the table and talking like they always did. His mom was currently laughing at a joke his sister said and he could feel Takeru’s eyes piercing through him every now and then. He took a deep breath.

“By the way what did you put in this, it tastes so much better than the one I make.”

“Oh, you know just-”

“I’m gay!” Tooru shouted at the whole table.

He could feel everybody’s eyes at him and he even heard Takeru sigh loudly. His dad chewed his meal slowly, looking at him through his glasses and even Makoto was looking around the table trying to find out what was happening.

“I mean, no I’m not! But I am, just not in-”

He stood up and cleared his throat: “Dear mom, dad, Kaori, Makoto and Takeru. I have come to the conclusion that I am attracted to both men and women, making me bisexual.”

There still wasn’t a word from anyone at the table, everyone just stared at him and Oikawa started to sweat. “And I wanted to share this with all of you, because…”

He felt Takeru staring intensely at him: “Because I am in a relationship. With Hajime.”

His sister took a sharp breath. “Iwaizumi Hajime? Your best friend Iwaizumi Hajime?”

“Yes,” Tooru gulped.

“I fucking knew it!” she stood up and pointed a finger accusingly at their parents.

Her husband Makoto was preparing to say something but she cut him off: “I knew it! I told you they were going to end up together!”

Oikawa looked at his parents expecting disappointment, but instead, he just found his parents looking defeated more than anything. His sister was grinning as she pushed the chair she was sitting in away and hugged him tightly.

“What-”

“I should have made a bet about this, damnit,” Kaori shook her head.

“Can someone explain what’s happening?” Oikawa asked, confused.

His mom sighed: “Kaori kept telling us you two were gonna get together by the end of high school, and me and dad thought you were going to be too oblivious even then.”

“Did literally everybody know but me?”

-

“Hajime, not everyone’s mom is like yours!”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

Oikawa sighed: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen her disagree with you or anything you did.”

“Is that a bad thing?” Iwaizumi frowned.

“Well, I don’t know but it seems like she doesn’t want to do anything wrong since you don’t have a dad.”

Iwaizumi stayed silent for a while and Oikawa wondered if he may have crossed the line this time. But Iwaizumi just looked at him and asked a genuine question: “Do you really think so?”

He came to sit next to him and wrapped his arms around Iwaizumi’s shoulders.

“I didn’t want to make you upset. I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s fine,” he sneaked his arms around Oikawa’s waist. He then kissed him on the cheek which Oikawa later placed on his shoulder. He loved moments like this. When they just sat or lied next to each other and didn’t need anything more at the time, but each other’s presence.

But what Oikawa said bugged him all day. He knew Oikawa didn’t mean it in a bad way, he just couldn’t stop thinking if it was true. Was his mom really just nice to him because his dad was a coward and left when he found out his mom was pregnant?

With a heavy sigh, he nudged Oikawa: “Hey, Tooru I’m gonna get going.”

As he was getting out of bed a sleepy hand caught his. “Can’t you stay?”

Iwaizumi closed his eyes for a while: “No, I have this really important thing to do.”

Oikawa mumbled something incoherently, but still hadn’t let go of Iwaizumi’s hand. The latter smiled and taking his hand, he put it back to bed with him. He gave Oikawa one last kiss on the forehead and was out of the door.

“Oh, are you leaving Hajime-kun?” Oikawa’s mom spotted him trying to get away.

“Yeah, mom wants me to be home for dinner, but thank you for letting me stay.”

“Oh Hajime-kun, you practically live here now,” she laughed.

Iwaizumi thought about Tooru and his stress to tell his parents they were dating. He could never imagine this sweet lady judging someone based on their sexual orientation. But he could be wrong. Would she act differently if she knew he was dating Oikawa? Who knows.

“So, I’m gonna go now,” he pointed to the door, his shoes already on his feet.

“Get home safe. And oh, say hi to your mom from me.”

“Will do.”

Of course, as soon as he tells her what he wants to. Or maybe he should greet her from Mrs Oikawa first. A conversation starter? He’d think about it.

As soon as he opened the door he was greeted with a good smell of fried rice. He went into the kitchen where he knew his mom would currently be residing. When she saw him, she smiled and came up to him, hugging him tightly.

“How was school?” she asked.

“It was okay.”

“And how’s Tooru-kun doing?”

Iwaizumi got seated at the table: “He’s fine. Mrs Oikawa told me to say hello to you by the way.”

“Oh, isn’t she just the nicest,” his mom smiled as she placed two bowls of food in front of them and took a seat at the table herself. Iwaizumi’s nervousness built up rapidly, just thinking about what he was going to say. He suddenly understood Oikawa’s situation much better. He would make a mental check not to put so much pressure on him next time.

Maybe he’d feel better if Iwaizumi came with him to tell his parents. Iwaizumi would certainly appreciate Oikawa being here. But at the same time, maybe it was better if he did it himself. No one extra. Just him and his mom. Like always.

“Mom?”

His mom lifted her head from her meal: “Yes dear?”

“I have something to tell you,” he dropped his spoon in the bowl.

His mom looked at him curiously: “My, this looks serious.”

“I uhm… I’ve been thinking,” he scratched the back of his neck, “and… I think I like boys.”

“Oh.”

They both stayed silent for a while, Iwaizumi giving his mom to process what he just said and his mom indeed processing what he just said, and finding the right words to say next.

“Just boys, or…” she cleared her throat.

“I think I like both.”

It sounded a little bit silly coming out of his mouth. Think. He didn’t think. He knew. But at the same time, he never really thought about who he likes, he just knew he liked Oikawa. That was the only thing he was sure about. Oikawa. Iwaizumi suddenly remembered the words that he said earlier. And it nudged him to say something more.

“You don’t have to tolerate it. Say what you really think.”

“What?” his mom looked quite shocked.

“All I’m saying is, you don’t have to go along with everything I say.”

“What are you talking about Hajime?”

“You don’t have to be so nice to me just because I don’t have a father.”

The silence that continued was pure hell for Iwaizumi. His mom didn’t look mad or shocked. More than anything, his mom looked hurt and Iwaizumi hated himself for making her feel this way.

“Mom, I’m sorry I-”

“Hajime, don’t ever think that my acts of love exist just because your father was a coward who left us. I love you more than anything in this world and I always make sure you know that.”

When he saw the tears in his eyes, he knew he went overboard. His legs practically carried him from his chair and he practically fell into the arms of his mom. They just stayed there like that for a while, Iwaizumi’s mom stroking his hair and Iwaizumi breathing into her shirt.

“Why the sudden coming out?”

“Just felt like telling you.”

“Any particular reason?”

Iwaizumi blushed and hoped his mom wouldn’t notice: “No. Not at all.”

Tooru felt like everything was where it was supposed to be.

He finally told his parents about him and Hajime. And even though they caught him after dinner and attempted to tell him to research how to have safe sex, he was full of giddiness when he closed the door to his room in front of their faces.

It gave him flashbacks to when they tried to give him the sex talk, which he was insanely embarrassed to listen to, but his sister just told him to suck it up, because she went through it too.

Right after he closed the door he picked up his phone and was already ringing Hajime. He told him the whole story and even laughed with Hajime when he told him about his unprepared outburst.

They told Hajime’s mom the very next day. She was absolutely ecstatic and invited Tooru to stay over for dinner and a sleepover, which Tooru gladly, even to Hajime’s protests, accepted.

During dinner, she told him about Hajime’s coming out story to which Hajime responded by grumbling, while eating his food. Tooru assured him it was still better than his and then told Hajime’s mom about it.

Makki and Mattsun are still the same. They still make kissy faces at each other when the two of them come to lunch together. They still pretend to puke when they see them kissing or holding hands but they’re still their biggest shippers.

They once had a small fight, Tooru can’t even remember what it was about. But Makki and Mattsun made sure they talked it out and weren’t mad at each other for more than a few hours. He wouldn’t trade them for anything.

For their biggest supporter, Takeru, he makes sure to talk to both of them regularly. And whenever he comes to visit, his first stop after Tooru’s house is Hajime’s house.

And as for Hajime and Tooru, they would say they are happy where they are. They still walk to school together, now however hand in hand. They still have volleyball practices, but now they make out in the locker room whenever they can. They still go to each other’s houses like before, now with some knowing stares and embarrassing remarks.

Yeah, he’d say they’re exactly where they should be. With each other.
