Chapter 1: The Choice
The early morning sun cast a golden glow across the Carolina skyline as a young woman stepped through the automatic doors of her job. Her warm breath fogged the air as she uttered a sigh of relief that her hour of labor had finally reached a conclusi- OK ENOUGH.
Sorry, but writing like this is going to give me an aneurysm.
Im just gonna get through the intro and we'll get this show on the road. Hi, my name is Tyler Morgan. I'm 23 years old, recently moved to North Carolina with my grandparents, and I'm employed at a Walmart working the night shift. All in all, I'm your average American 20-something. My life is pretty boring, but it's simple and peaceful which suits me just fine. Or at least it least it did, until recent events.
I had just ended my last 10-7 shift for the work week and was ready to go home to enjoy my days off the way I usually do, buried in video games and manga while I await Mass Effect Andromeda's release ( cutaway shot to Rose from Titanic saying, "Its been eighty years..."). This plan would have gone off without a hitch if life hadn't decided to throw a monkey wrench in it. A monkey wrench that took the delightful form of a tractor trailer with bad brakes doing 80 in a 55. I wish I could say my 2007 Altima fought the good fight, but my poor little Madam Blueberry was soundly thrashed. The last thought that passed through my mind as I stared down twin high beams was something along the lines of , "This is gonna hurt like a motherfu-"
And it did.
The next thing I knew, I was surrounded by a stunning amount of white light, and lying on a hard surface that felt cool to the touch. I turned my head to the side and realize that I was lying on the floor of…a room far to massive to qualify as a room. Slowly, I sat up and took stock of myself. After counting all fingers and toes, and noting that I felt no pain whatsoever, I realized two things. A: I was dead or in some kind of coma, and B: Since I wasn't in pain or surrounded by fire, I did NOT go to hell. I'd be lying if I said I didn't celebrate that last fact for a few moments (not that I was worried that I was a bad person or anything, it's just when you've been raised by a religious family and your as big a perv as I am, you kinda get nervous about these things). Before me stretched an endless hallway and further down it seemed to be filled with white doors with small gold plaques on each one. "Is this... heaven?" I asked myself as I looked around in awe.
No, It's so much better.
"SHIT!!" I squawked in surprise scrambling forward as a loud voice seem to echo behind me. I spun around and got into a knelt position, fists up in defense. An deep chuckle sounded from the tall dark figure that stood before. It's presence was unlike any I had felt before, haunting, powerful, yet gave off an amused air as it looked down at me. At least I think it did. It had no eyes, it's form more of a silhouette than a physical person. It reminded me of the personification of truth from Full Metal Alchemist, a dark shadow with an eerily prominent grin. "Where the-.....who are....WHAT?!" Truth wannabe laughed again, their grin stretching so wide I was surprised their face didn't split in half.
My my, aren't you the eloquent one? I shall answer your questions, or what I assume you meant them to be, in order. Where we are is my home, and who I am is-
They paused and spread their arms wide in a dramatic gesture.
The God of Fandom!
... ... ...
"...What? -_-"
Truth wannabe (or TW for short)'s smile dropped.
I was kinda hoping for a bigger reaction then that... After all most mortals don't meet a God everyday.
I shrugged. "Sorry it's just…that just sounds like a kinda lame thing to be in charge of. I mean compared to like gods of war and stuff. I mean aren't you essentially a nerd god?" At this point, TW was starting to get more then a little offended.
W-What?! Now see here you ignorant plebeian, I'll have you know I am a top-tier God with powers beyond your comprehension! I am in charge of every fandom in existence and to those who devote their lives to those fandoms-
"Nerds."
SHUT UP! I have the ability to create parallel universes for those fans as an alternative to the standard afterlife. I give them a chance to live again as a character in their favorite series or story. What could be more amazing then that?!
At this, my interest was peaked. "Wait, you can put someone in another world? Like a show or a video game and let them interact with the characters? That kicks ass!" TW smirked as they crossed their arms and began to study their non-existent fingernails.
It is pretty amazing isn't it? However, as much as I adore hearing about how great I am, that's not why I brought you here.
After those words, TW walked forward and stuck their index finger in my face.
You, Taylor Morrison , have been chosen to be the next mortal sent to their favorite fandom. Yes, that's right, you shall finally be...a Jedi. You will train with Yoda, you will learn to master your force and make the choice between following the path of the light or succumbing to the temptations of the dark sid-
"That's not my name.”
WILL YOU STOP INTERRUPTING ME?!? I swear you have to be the rudest, most ungrateful- wait, ...what?
"My name is Tyler Morgan, not Taylor Morrison."
... So...your NOT Taylor Morrison, the die hard Star Wars fan from Austin,Texas?
"Nope." I replied with emphasis on the "p" making a light pop with my lips.
...
FUCK.
TW frantically pulled out a tablet from what seemed like thin air and rapidly began typing on the screen. After a few silent moments of them feverishly searching the glass surface for something, their mouth dropped open in a silent scream. Some how, they managed to give off a look of sheer terror and disbelief with nothing but a mouth to emote with. It was kinda impressive really.
Oh no. I cant believe this. She's already been processed into heaven. There's no getting her back now. How could I make such a mistake?
The God's tablet clattered to the floor as they pressed their hands to their face, practically radiating despair. After a few moments, my bleeding heart (and an immense feeling of awkwardness at witnessing a stranger’s mental breakdown) drove my socially inept ass to attempt to comfort the distraught deity.
"Um...there there...everyone has off days at their job." I stated as nicely as I could patting them on the back. "If it's any consolation, I'm happy to be here, horrible demise aside."
*sniff* T-Thanks...I needed to hear that..
After taking a moment to gather themselves together TW raised their head and uttered a small sigh.
I have to admit, this is an unexpected turn of events. But given the fact that the individual that was supposed to be here is no longer an option, today is your lucky day Ms.Morgan. Most fans that come here have their world chosen for them based on whatever fandom they spent the most time obsessing over. However, since you are a fan of many different ones you can choose specifics, such as when in a series you end up, and what form you'll take in said series. According to my records, your two favorite fandoms are Pokémon and Dragon Age. Is this accurate?
"Pretty much, and if my choice is between the two then I pick Dragon Age, Origins please. I’d rather not visit Kirkwall or lose a limb just yet."
Excellent, at least the data was right about something today… As I said before you can also choose what form you can have in the game. Human,Elf, Qunari, Dwarf, Dragon, anything you want at al-
"I choose Mew."
...I'm sorry?
"I want to be Mew, the legendary Pokémon. Make. Me. Mew."
But...WHY?!
"Fuck you that's why."
