Work Text:
Sinnoh Now is the most popular show on the Sinnoh Cassette channel. It has been at the top since the very first time the show aired on television, at a time when the channel itself was in its infancy. It was the first show in the region to specialize in Pokemon celebrity news, interviewing both the up and coming as well the already established figures of the Pokemon world. It was also the first TV show to actually provide a look into the daily lives of celebrities, providing the public with a much more detailed and humanized image about their idols. Being a pioneer with regards to Pokemon news has served to distinguish the show from its rivals and put the Sinnoh Cassette on a league of its own. It's a privilege for a student of any branch of media studies in Sinnoh to get a job at the channel and more specifically the show. Rhonda was no different. But the difference is that she actually managed to pass the notoriously difficult interview process and secure her dream job.
She entered the business as a nervous little intern copying papers and bringing coffee and worked her way up-to being the most popular reporter the show ever had. She's proud of her work and what it took to get there. Of course there are detractors, people who wag their tongues about how she must've slept her way up. It used to bother her but now she doesn't even give them a backward glance. They weren't even worth her notice. They couldn't do what she achieved, so they had to try and bring her down to feel good about themselves. Just because she was a woman, that must mean she spread her legs to reach the top. If they believed that, it would mean it wasn't that they were inadequate but that she was cheating. That they would've gotten the job if she wasn't such a wily witch. She scoffed in derision. Not worth her time at all. Unlike them she actually had a career that takes up her time.
In her time as primary reporter for Pokemon related news, she has interviewed countless celebrities. Gym leaders, pokemon breeders, poffin bakers, coordinators, hell, even champions. But she wasn't always as good as she is now. Her first ever interview was with Aubrey from Ballonlea Town, a patissier from Galar who had set up his patisserie in Sinnoh and baked delicious treats with the help of his multiple Milcery and Alcremie. The place was an absolute hit and even Champion Cynthia, famous for her sweet tooth, was seen visiting it multiple times. Rhonda was just a junior reporter sent out for her first assignment at the time and to say she messed up was an understatement. Milcery and Alcremie, being exclusively Galar Pokemon were virtually unknown in Sinnoh, and as consequence she didn't know much about them. Nervous about her lack of knowledge she had crammed as much information as possible about them and their assistance in the man's profession as a patissier from the information packet the channel provided her, only for her mind to go completely blank at the actual interview. She stumbled through the interview and even though Aubrey didn't mind it at all and even told her she did well, Rhonda considered it a personal failure. From that day onwards she worked on her composure and demeanor during interviews until she became the first choice for interviewing particularly hard interviewees. She makes sure to always be prepared beforehand with information she compiled herself so that she can handle the interview better. And she's forever grateful to her past self for not giving up and building up useful habits.
At the moment she was assigned to interview a top coordinator. Now considering her expertise, this shouldn't be a problem. Go in, conduct the interview, get out, all done. But nonetheless she was a bit troubled. Rhonda is known for getting her interviewees talk about things they usually don't talk about. That's what makes her interviews the talk of the town. There is new information being brought out. Like the time she got Champion Wallace to talk about how he initially wanted to give Pokemon Performance a try before stumbling upon contests. Or the time she got Top Coordinator Dawn Berlitz of Twinleaf Town to talk about her Mamoswine's rebellious phase. Rhonda's interviews weren't just the same generic facts rehashed over and over again. They were goldmines for fans when it comes to information about their idols. But currently she's struggling to devise a way to continue this trend with her recent target.
May of Petalburg City is a top coordinator with three Grand Festival Ribbon Cups under her belt with the most recent victory being her Sinnoh Grand Festival. She's the daughter of Norman, the Petalburg City gym leader. She also has a brother, Max, who is making his way through various regional leagues and intending to take over the Petalburg gym from his father. Her starter Pokemon was a Torchic which has evolved into a Blaziken. She has a hobby of visiting restaurants in every city she's travelling through and rating them on her Poketube channel. These pieces of information are basically common knowledge to any Pokemon Contest fan. Beyond that the coordinator doesn't let much slip past her guard. Despite being friendly and outgoing, May is known for being private about her affairs and other than some uninteresting details not much is known about her other than what she wants to reveal.
Rhonda doesn't want her interview of the coordinator to be another one where all she gets is such superficial facts. She wants something new and exciting. Unfortunately the only way she can think of is by addressing May's unfortunate unofficial description in the contest circuit....that she is a monster of a coordinator.
As far as Rhonda knows two things contribute to this descriptor. One is that throughout her coordinating career, from her debut in Hoenn to her recent win in Sinnoh, May of Petalburg City has yet to loose an appeal round. Now, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a coordinator on their journey to the Grand Festival will falter in the appeals round every now and then. In fact, it was pretty much a given. The appeals round after all, was not only a gamble no matter how much the routine was practised but the evaluation itself was also very subjective, depending on the judges' reception. So it was almost a rite of passage, to do an appeal and think you did good enough to advance and excitedly look at the screen and anticipate your name popping up, only for it to not be there. It was how Pokemon coordinating worked, where some loose their mettle, while others grin and cut their teeth.
Of course, there are exceptions. Solidad of Pewter City for example, has never lost an appeal. The same goes for Robert of Silver Rock Isle, Zoey of Snowpoint City, and Drew of LaRousse City. They were prodigies, born for the contest floor. Their understanding of Pokemon and attack combinations as well as their skill and creativity ensure that where others falter, they excel. That why each and every one of them are top coordinators, dominating contests since their debut. It was reminiscent of Champion Wallace's own sweep of the contest circuit back in his competing days.
The reason May stands out even when several of her compatriots can also boast the same is that all of them knew they were going into Pokemon coordinating. They attended classes for it, trained for it, watched Pokemon contests back to back etc. May on the other hand, initially didn't even like Pokemon or Pokemon battles. She didn't even know about Pokemon contests until she saw her first one at Rustboro City. Yet in spite of being an absolute beginner with no background, she never lost an appeal. That's unheard of in coordinating. Beginner coordinators, unless they had early instruction and practice, almost invariably lost appeals and worked their way up to choreographing better and better ones. May's good battling skills can be attributed to her years of watching her gym leader father but what of appeals? That was nothing but sheer talent.
Rhonda, in preparation for the interview had hunted down and watched all of the coordinator's contest videos. Even a non-coordinator like her could pick out the fact that May had not even a cursory instruction in coordinating. For one thing she didn't subscribe to any known style of coordinating like her competitors. Soledad for example, uses the aggressive Kanto style where powerful motions and attacks dazzle the audience. Drew on the other hand tends to use the fluid Hoenn model, where smooth and elegant movements take up priority. Both Zoey and Dawn use the Sinnoh style, focusing on fast paced combinations and strong impressions from the get go. Compared to them, May was rough and untrained, but made up for it in creativity and novel ideas. The fact that she made it all the way to the quarter finals of her very first grand festival, a bracket completely made up of trained coordinators is a testament to her belatedly discovered talent. By the time she competed in the Kanto Grand Festival, May had smoothened out her rough edges and devised a prototype version of her own style of coordinating, a style with two variants, the Appeal Variant for the appeal round and the Battle Variant for the battle rounds. Today many young coordinators who idolise May follow her style of coordinating, which just two years ago acquired official recognition from the Pokemon Activities Committee and was christened the Petalburg Style. Even coordinators who use other styles, tend to use the Petalburg Appeal Variant for the first round. In other words, May has a rather frightening prodigal ability for choreographing an appeal.
Secondly, May is known for knockout wins. In coordinating, trainers generally tend to attack their opponents' points and outlast them while shoring their own. Elegant displays of power and diverting their opponents attacks their own way or neutralizing it with ingenious and gorgeous looking combinations, it is the usual contest method. Coordinators focus on skill rather than power after all. In this environment, May has amassed a reputation for knocking out her opponents. Not that she is brutish, Arceus No! No-one would ever say that her battles are nothing less than showstopping. But nonetheless she does have a propensity for knockouts. Knowing her track record, coordinators who face her in the battle round usually try to avoid her attacks and outlast her while sniping her points from afar, knowing that otherwise their Pokemon would most likely get taken out in a beautiful but powerful hit.
It was the combination of both, her prodigy and her power that gave her the definition of a monster of a coordinator. From what she can gather, Rhonda thinks that the unfortunate sobriquet was bequeathed sometime around her Hoenn Grand Festival Victory but only caught up years later when she defeated Soledad in an independent Pokemon Contest. By then she was a famous top coordinator and an influential poketuber. With her friendship with several other top coordinators, her family prestige, large online following, and refusal to divulge too much about her personal life other than what pretains to her Pokemon coordinating, most reporters and interviewers did not want to risk asking her about it and consequently alienating her.
Rhonda is not 'most'. She is confident in her ability to ask uncomfortable questions to her targets and weasel out of the situation if the reception was particularly bad. If she asks about this and actually gets an answer then this interview is guaranteed to go viral. It's just that she doesn't actually know how to go about it exactly. Rhonda hasn't felt this ill prepared since the Alcremie disaster of her debut.
As she's stewing on what to do, her crew walking on tiptoes around her, her assistant gave her the signal that the coordinator had arrived. Instantly the crew were in motion and set about with the finishing touches. As May is a very busy person and they were only able to secure a two hour slot before the coordinator had to leave they had planned to dive straight into the interview the moment she arrived. As the coordinator entered the room in a sleek red dress with black accents and started walking towards her, Rhonda took a deep breath and consoled herself with the knowledge that she was good at thinking on her feet.

R: "Welcome to another episode of the Sinnoh Now's Exclusive Special, Pillar Personalities, where we meet some of the most successful people the regions have to offer. I am Rhonda from Sinnoh Now and today with me you have three time Grand Festival winning top coordinator, May of Petalburg City!!!"
M: "Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here."
R: "So May tell me, how are you finding Sinnoh? Anything exciting to report?"
M: "Sinnoh is as delightful as ever. I've travelled through Sinnoh before during the year I took off and found it beautiful then as well, but there is something about going about the contest circuit that makes a region even more gorgeous to me. As for something exciting, I visited Canalave City and got to taste some delicious authentic Sinnoh dishes! It was absolutely amazing!
R: (chuckles) "It's nice to see that you're having fun and no doubt bombarding your followers with food suggestions that I'm sure that they'll appreciate. With how many videos you've uploaded lately maybe we should make you the official ambassador for Sinnoh cuisine!"
M: (chuckles) "If it means that I'll get to eat even more great food be my guest. No complaints from me."
R: "We'll definitely be keeping that in mind! Note that down Sinnoh Tourism Board! Now you've won your third Ribbon Cup, congratulations for that by the way. I know that you must be so tired of hearing this question over and over again but what do you plan to do now?"
M: "First of all, thank you. What do I plan to do? Well I have some seminars lined up in some Coordinating academies in Veilstone, Sunyshore, and Solaceon. So currently I'm focusing more on gathering material for these talks. Other than that I don't have much planned. I'll stick around Sinnoh some more, continue with my vlog and enjoy my downtime."
R: "Well no-one can say don't deserve a break. Coming back to the Grand Festival, your appeal was absolutely gorgeous! I was mind blown and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. An orb of light surrounded by revolving glowing spheres imitating the solar system. Where did you get the idea and how did you achieve it? "
M: "The idea actually came from Sinnoh legends. I happened to visit an archaeological site which had these engravings of the adamant and lustrous orbs from Sinnoh legends on the stone relief. They appeared to be revolving around each other. I was struck by the image and never forgot it. So when I was preparing an appeal for the grand festival I knew I had to do something inspired from it.
As to how I went about achieving it, well both Blaziken and I worked very hard. It was actually an exercise in control. The orb of light was a tightly controlled Fire Ball and planets were an extremely tightly controlled stone edge. It was exhausting manifesting stone edge as spheres and then settling them into orbits. But we're very grateful that all of that effort paid off and that you enjoyed our appeal!"
R: "Amazing! Absolutely amazing! After your appeal you blitzed though the battle rounds with remarkable flair as always. How did it feel to once again to head to head with one of your rivals, Zoey? "
M: "It was thrilling. Zoey is such a great coordinator and I've always held her in such high esteem. Her appeals and battle skills never fail to impress me. We met up after the finals at the banquet and we joked around like always and even made plans to meet up later. To have that special moments of a battle with a friend grinning on the other side, knowing that whatever the result we're both going to have great fun...it's just all around awesome!"
R: "Wow! I can see that you're both great friends! I did see that you uploaded a pic from the banquet of you and Zoey and it looked like you were both going to pass out from laughing. What happened there if I may ask?"
M: "Well (giggling)...sorry. Our friend Kenny, ummm... (soft laugh)...Its not a good joke at all but we couldn't stop laughing. He called our battle where I had brought out my Delcatty and Zoey her Purugly....um... A cat fight...(chortle)."
R: (short laughter) "I see... That must've been hilarious given the setting."
M: "It was. It was festival banquet and Mr. Contesta was right next to us and Kenny just swanned in and said "Congratulations on your cat fight!" and then he saw Mr. Contesta and went so red we were worried."
(Laughter from Rhonda and the Crew)
R: "I also saw a picture of you accepting the Ribbon Cup from this year's presenter, Top Coordinator Robert of Silver Rock Isle. It was captioned 'Greatest moment of my life, to get the Ribbon Cup from his hands', Could you elaborate on this?"
M: "Robert was the winner of the Hoenn Grand Festival, the very first one I ever participated in. He beat Drew in the finals. Drew and I were, and still are rivals. But he was so much more experienced than me, so despite my annoyance at him and desire to beat him, I'd put him on a pedestal. So seeing Robert win against Drew was kinda jarring. But at the same, Robert provided me with the first ever concrete picture of a how a top coordinator should be. His bond with his Milotic and the trust they had in each other was awe-inspiring to witness. Seeing Robert gave me perspective...the prospect of being a top coordinator was not just this abstract idea anymore. If I were to aim to be one I had to become like him. Skill, power, knowledge.... All of these won't matter unless you know your Pokemon and nurture and grow the bond between you. So he was someone I've always admired and to win a Grand Festival and have him present me the Ribbon Cup...it was just amazing!"
R: "A dream come true huh?"
M: "Yes."
(Rhonda seems to contemplate something deeply. She then seems determined about doing something)
R: "Are you aware that you have a rather unconventional nickname in the contest circuit?"
M: "Hmmm? Is this about one of those ridiculous nicknames Harley keeps giving me?"
R: "No, nothing like that. Um... you're called a monster of a coordinator in contest circles. Are you aware of it and if so what do you think about it? "
(Rhonda seems to have the expression of someone who willingly bit a bullet and 100% okay with eating it)
(Silence. May has an unreadable expression on her face)
M:......(snort) "I was wondering someone was going to ask me that. Yes. I do know that I'm called that and I kinda like it. That I'm skilled enough to be a monster at coordinating is something I can be honestly proud of. It wasn't always like that but now I'm all okay with it and weirdly enough I consider it something I earned through hard work. That my appeals are strong is indicative of my skill as well the skill of my Pokemon and that I have a tendency to win by knockout says that my Pokemon are strong enough to do so while still putting on a show. And if all our effort to attain that skill and power gave us the title of being monster then it's only fitting. You're the first person to ask me about this though."
R: "Well I'm glad you didn't take offense to that! (chuckle)
M: "Were you psyching yourself up to ask me that?"
R: "To tell the truth, yes. I was kinda worried for a second actually!"
M: "I'm not that intimidating. And besides its not my fault. It's my mentor's fault!"
R: ".........Mentor?"
M: "Yep! Totally his fault that I got saddled with monster as a nickname."
(Rhonda' takes on a 'Jackpot' expression)
R: "Would you mind explaining? Can you tell us who is this mentor you mentioned?"
M: "Of course. It's a long story so bear with me. I'm pretty sure everyone already knows this but I did not want to be a Pokemon trainer at all when I started out. Perhaps it was the pressure of being a great gym leader's daughter but I didn't like Pokemon or Pokemon battles. To me setting off on my Pokemon journey was just an excuse to travel and visit all the restaurants I wanted to visit.
I met my mentor in what was then distressing circumstances but now just seem extremely hilarious. He was from Kanto and a Pokemon trainer aiming for the Hoenn League. It wasn't until I saw him in gym battles that I realized how talented he was. I mean... I thought he was good but not that good you know? I was a complete newbie, couldn't tell you what was up and down in Pokemon battling or Pokemon care. He took me under his wing basically. I still hadn't decided on being a Pokemon Coordinator then...didn't even know what that was... so the early days of my training were for the League. It's actually pretty evident when you look at Blaziken, who as my starter went through some intense Pokemon battling training under my mentor-"
R: "Sorry for interrupting but are you telling me that your Blaziken was initially trained as a League battle Pokemon?"
M: "Yes. As a Torchic he didn't get much training other than simple exercises but later as Combusken and then as Blaziken most of his battle experience came from sparring and training with my mentor's absurdly powerful league Pokemon.
Coming back to the topic of my mentee days, one thing I always amazed by was his creativity. He was an extremely creative battler. His strategies were so insane and weird but they always worked. He was gym leader's nightmare. You know when we say 'think outside the box'?....I don't think he even knew the box existed and his Pokemon didn't either.
(An extremely fond expression crosses May's face and Rhonda noted it down mentally)
So when I started participating in contests, for my appeals I took cues from his creative battling style. I used to ask for him suggestions and he used to give me ideas and his gym battles would inspire me. Back then I didn't realize that my unpredictable coordinating style was unusual or that there even were things like specific styles for coordinating. I just took whatever he taught me and tweaked it for contests. So in a way I didn't come up with the Petalburg style individually as much as I contributed to and refined it.
My battling style as well was somewhat the same. My Pokemon constantly trained with his Pokemon and all of them were Pokemon who cut their teeth on tough gym battles and all my battle experience came from that so-"
R: "Naturally your battling style, even though you were a coordinator, oriented itself that way and since it was your foundation, you can't completely shake it off even years later?"
M: "Exactly! You see it was his first attempt at mentoring as well....he didn't know what he was doing just like I didn't know what I was doing. Especially because he hadn't heard of contests either so he just taught me what he thought would be useful. So we were both learning as we went. It was a learning process for us both. It's actually quite visible when you look at how I was taught and how Dawn was taught-"
R: (startled) " Excuse me what? Taught Dawn? Are you telling me that both you and Dawn Berlitz were mentored by the same person?"
M: "Yes. After we went our separate ways, he went to Sinnoh and he met Dawn there under coincidentally enough, similar circumstances. Dawn wasn't a complete newbie like me. Her mother was a top coordinator and she attended coordinating schools and seminars with Zoey and Kenny. So she knew what to do but lacked practical experience. Our mentor with his experience with my coordinating career, was able to direct her much along the lines of contest battling than with me. So even with the same mentor, we have vastly different styles."
R: "So you met Dawn through your mentor?"
M: "Yes. He was the one who suggested Dawn to go travel with me so that she can get more experience. In fact he actually has a habit a foisting his newer mentees onto me after their mentorship is over. Kinda like, this is my first disciple! Go bother her now?"
R: (chuckling) "So who else did you get saddled like this?"
M: "Serena."
R: ......"Kalos Queen and Top Coordinator Serena? She was also mentored by the same person?"
M: "Yes. His experience with mentoring coordinators was very valuable when she was participating in Showcases and when she expressed an interest in contests, he called me up and asked me take her on. That was the year I took a break from the circuit you see."
(Rhonda and the crew are now looking extremely bewildered and awestruck)
R: (in a disbelieving tone) "Anyone else?"
M: (with an amused grin) "Drew!"
R: Whaaaaaa-...(cough cough)...Now you're just having me on.... If you were the first mentee your mentor had then there is no way he mentored Drew of LaRousse City as he was already a well known coordinator by then. Right?"
M: (chuckle) "You're right. He didn't mentor Drew in coordinating.
(Sighs of relief from the crew. Most of them look like their world is imploding.)
M: He mentored him in showcases!"
(Rhonda's eye look like enormously saucers by now)
M: "You see after getting acquainted to Serena though me, Drew became interested in showcases but he didn't act on that interest until his second Grand Festival victory in Kanto.
Despite being similar showcases are different from Contests. In Contests it's the Pokemon that have to shine. The involvement of the coordinator in an appeal is not prohibited but only allowed as an accessory to the Pokemons' performance. In showcases, the involvement of the trainer is a must but here it's about complementing each other. In contests nothing should overshadow the Pokemon while in showcases neither pokemon nor trainer should overshadow each other.
So Drew approached Serena for some coaching, but she hadn't mentored anyone before and wasn't feeling too confident about it. I told you before that our mentor was an unconventional trainer didn't I? One of the ways he trains his Pokemon is by being physically involved in their training. I kid you not, he asks his pokemon to attack him so he can gauge their level and strength. So because of his personal experience of involving himself in his Pokemons' routine and his experience with mentoring coordinators he was an excellent mentor for a Pokemon Performer. So Serena directed him to Drew and Drew actually knew that he mentored me and Dawn so he decided to give it a shot! He was mentored in the Orange Islands and what do you know? He became the very first Orange Islands Showcase King when they set up Showcases there!"
(Several beats of silence)
R: (slowly) "You're telling me that.... one single person mentored three top coordinators and one top coordinator into a Top level Pokemon Performer?"
M: "And a league champion! My brother was also mentored by him when he became a Pokemon trainer."
R: ....I see...
M: "You know, in hindsight it made sense that Drew won the Orange Islands Showcase Series. I mean our mentor did play a crucial role in establishing showcases there and raising it to the international prestige it now enjoys. Makes perfect sense that his mentee would win the first one."
R: (almost out of breath) "What do you mean he set up the prestigious Orange Island Showcase Grand Prix?"
M: "...Let's just say he's a figure of extreme political importance in the Orange Islands as well as Kanto as a whole."
R: ....."Who is this man?"
M: (with a very amused smile) "Oh! I didn't say his name?"
R: (catching onto the fact that May is enjoying this) "No...you didn't".
M: (grinning) "Oh! Well, he's Ash Ketchum!"
(Absolute silence)
R: (slowly) "Ash.... Ketchum?"
M: "Mhmm."
R: "Champion Ash Ketchum of Alola?"
M: "Yes."
R: "Reigning Grand Champion Ash Ketchum?"
M: (very amused) "Is there another Ash Ketchum I should know about?"
R: "Oh."
(The room was silent for several seconds, then..... pandemonium erupted as people lost their minds)
(Rhonda slumps onto her chair as if all strings were cut. Her crew is still going crazy in the background. May is grinning like a Meowth that got the cream, thoroughly enjoying the chaos.)
R: "I'm so getting promoted."
