Flora de Mayo

Summary:

Isabela Madrigal is not fine.

Despite what she tells everyone, including herself, she is not fine. Not having a gift, being reminded of it daily and her Abuela seemingly hating the very ground she walked upon, Isabela had nothing to look forward to.

That was, until she noticed the Casita starting to gain cracks

(also known as a swap between Mirabel and Isabela)

Notes:

Hello, and welcome to my first Encanto fanfiction.

So, the other day, I was listening to "What Else can I Do" and the I wondered, 'Hey, what if Mirabel sang that song?', thus this idea was created.

I want to see how different the events of the film would have been if Mirabel got a gift but Isa didn't. I want to keep some things from both the characters (Isabela's engagement to Mariano and Mirabel's awkwardness), but I'm mostly trying to change them as much as I can.

Two little disclaimers though: This story still follows the same plot as the movie, so there will be major spoilers for the movie, also any Spanish in this story will be from Google Translate, so take it with a grain of salt

Chapter Text

'Isa, it's time!"

"Already?"

"Time flies fast, doesn't it, Mi Vida?"

"Mh-hm! What kind of gift do you think I'll get?"

"It depends on what the Casita gives you. I'm sure your gift will be wonderful."

With that pep talk, little Isabela held her head up high looked at the stairs of the Caitsa, her abuela at her side.

The five-year-old was excited for this. For her whole life, she was told that she would receive a gift, just like her Mama, her Tia Pepa and Tio Bruno did. And knowing that she was the first kid of her generation to get one made it all the better.

So with a large smile on her face, she fixed her white layered dress and carefully walked up the stairs, surrounded by excited villagers.

When she reached to the top where her door was yet to be revealed, her whole family was there. Her Mami and Papa, Tio Felix and Tia Pepa, Tio Bruno, her cousin, Dolores, who would be getting a gift herself in a few months herself, little baby Luisa in her Mami's arms sucking her fingers and Abuela, holding the candle that held the miracle of her family.

"Isabela, do you promise to use your gift to help out the community, to bring joy to our Encanto, and to keep the miracle of the family?", Abuela asked, a proud smile on her face.

"I do", the little girl said, touching the candle.

And with that, she put her small hand on the door handle, brightness flashing to reveal her room and new gift...
