Maja takes to motherhood in a way that Dani’s not entirely sure she’ll ever be able to. He hangs with his legs dangling from her hips, babbling a blue streak, hands tucked into the folds of his mother's gown and smiling up at her like she’d hung the moon.
Dani hasn’t thought about what it will be like if she has kids. What – or more precisely who – she’ll think of when her own baby comes. That some ugly thing will be loosed from the back of her mind when it finally happens.
Then Maja says, “Would you like to hold the baby?”
Dani takes the child quite carefully into her arms. Johan is round and sweet and uncomplicated, and though sometimes she looks for bits of Christian in him she mostly just sees a happy, chatty, well-adjusted baby who’s fascinated with her earbobs.
“Ow,” she remarks and hands him back to Maja, who just smiles sweetly.
“It will be an honor to dance with you at his naming ceremony today.” Maja takes her hand in Dani’s – clean, slim, and iceberg cold. Dani smiles and squeezes back.
Hours later, they hold each other’s hands and move together toward the center of the circle in one single, smooth motion, laughing all the while, as Johan sits at the center of it all, a chubby, confused, wriggling puppy.
