you can't make your heart feel something it won't

Summary:

::

Even though it’s only ten in the morning, the lines of exhaustion are draped heavily on Yoohyeon like a blanket, blinking slowly and eyelashes kissing the tops of her cheekbones so prettily that Minji couldn’t resist the urge to lean forward, kissing her right under her eye.

Yoohyeon stops mid-question, lips parted slightly as she exhales. Her breath smells like stale coffee she undoubtedly had during her early morning shift. Minji wrinkles her nose, smiling.

“Unnie,” it’s not a warning but Minji knows she caught the alpha off guard.

“Sorry,” she doesn’t know why she’s whispering but Yoohyeon leans forward to hear her better. Suddenly, Minji snorts, laughter bubbling up her throat until her body collapses forward, forehead nestled on a strong shoulder. “We’re both so sleep-deprived right now.”

A hum vibrates from Yoohyeon’s throat, resting her head against the top of Minji’s.

lil note:

for simplicity and plot’s sake: minji, bora, handong, and siyeon are of the same age—all of them are juniors. yoohyeon, gahyeon, and yubin are of the same age—all of them are sophomores.

::

Minji has roughly two hours of sleep, head still processing half a semester’s worth of information on the world history of… something—she’ll remember it once she sees it on the exam later—so no one can fault her when she jumps two feet into the air when someone calls her name the moment she steps out of her dorm lobby.

Jesus,” she whines, the flashcards she meticulously highlighted with every color imaginable dropping on the pavement, and a laugh reaches her ears before a hand helps her pick up her stuff. “I’m going to kill you.”

“Sorry,” Yoohyeon doesn’t sound even the tiniest bit apologetic. She does brush off some dirt from the stack of index cards, even smoothing out a smushed corner where it dropped. Minji notices a paper bag and coffee. “Breakfast.”

“Thank you,” Minji nearly sobs, letting the alpha carry her bag in exchange for the food. They start walking towards Minji’s building, the sun is already high in the sky. She glances at the other woman and Yoohyeon’s still in her cafe uniform. She must’ve just finished her shift. “Is it worrying if I said I feel like a part of me still thinks I’m in bed?”

“Very,” Yoohyeon nods, holding the iced coffee as Minji wrestles with the sandwich’s wrapping. “I snagged that one earlier. It was the last one and I saw a dude eyeing it so I took it down. You should see how hard he glared at me when I said we were all out.”

“Remind me to never break up with you.”

Yoohyeon shakes her head, lips curling up but it’s not quite a smile, straightening her posture when Minji’s building comes into view.

“What’s today’s agenda, captain?”

Minji takes the abrupt topic change in stride, taking a sip of her coffee to wash the food down. “I have an exam the whole morning and maybe stay in the studio after. I’m thinking of getting a headstart on the project I told you last week.”

Yoohyeon hums, checking the time. “You still got fifteen minutes. Sit down with me?”

They sit on a bench with the perfect view to see people moving about inside the ground floor’s hallway, Yoohyeon slouching on the chair, flicking through Minji’s flashcards with interest.

“Quiz me?”

“I’ll probably sleep as soon as I get back to my dorm.”

Minji pinches a waist. Yoohyeon yelps and they move away. “I thought you had class today?”

“Cancelled.”

“Fucking lucky.”

Yoohyeon sneaks a sip of coffee, grinning cheekily. “I thought you wanted me to quiz you?”

Minji sighs, wrapping the half-eaten sandwich. She chugs down her coffee, hoping it’ll take effect as soon as her exam starts. “You’re distracting. We have five minutes left. Let’s do it fast.”

“Bossy,” Yoohyeon grumbles.

“Isn’t that your type?”

Yoohyeon flushes, Minji answers every question perfectly.

::

“It seems like we’re not the only ones with the same idea.”

Minji pouts. “Let’s find a tree.”

Yoohyeon tips her sunglasses down the tip of her nose, considering. “You sure?”

“Trust me.”

They end up near the outskirts of the south quad, Yoohyeon only putting down the blanket that Minji packed when the older woman gave her the go signal after checking for ants near the tree. Most of the students are near the middle, basking in the sunlight, light clouds, and cool breeze; a reprieve from studying in densely packed library tables or stuffy dorm rooms.

“I got pastries,” Yoohyeon proudly spreads in between them before chucking out a thick wire-bound stack of papers from within the depths of her bag. How it fits in there, Minji has no idea. She’s just glad the pastries weren’t squished. “The thermos has iced tea.”

“I thought this was a study date?” Minji raises an eyebrow as she lines the snacks neatly on the edge of the blanket, inhaling the scent of grass and wood deeply when a breeze passes. “This is looking more like a picnic.”

“I’m studying,” Yoohyeon grunts as she hauls the thick tome—that’s what Minji’s calling it inside her head, it looks serious enough to be one—onto her lap along while scattering her highlighters on the space beside her, settling back against the bark of the tree. “The food is to keep you company.”

A group groans loudly and Minji watches as they take out a frisbee, excitedly stretching their limbs after a long while of slumped over their laptops. Someone trips but they end up laying down on the grass instead of getting up, laughing until their stomachs hurt more than the fall.

Yoohyeon mutters under her breath when she studies, all complex terms and complicated intricacies of biochemistry. Minji shudders at the number of foreign words, leaning over to tuck the alpha’s hair properly behind her ears so it doesn’t get in the way as she highlights a phrase.

Overcome with a sense of wanting to be productive, Minji takes out a sketchpad, noting how close she is to the end again, and lazily sketches.

Her latest project is drying at the back of the studio and is the whole reason why Yoohyeon invited her to study outside for a change; saying something about the fumes inside the single classroom enough to get her high for a night and can’t imagine staying there for hours like how Minji does when she’s working on something.

She draws vague shapes: the changing clouds, the frisbee mid-air, a dragonfly that flies away too soon. When she munches on a creampuff, Yoohyeon opens her mouth expectantly. Minji lets her have a bite.

“Can I draw you?”

Yoohyeon glances at her before shrugging. “Such a girlfriend cliché .”

“I can make you look ugly, you know?”

“That’s kind of impossible to do.”

“So humble, too,” Minji teases, wrist flicking as she traces the curve of Yoohyeon’s jaw with a pencil.

She’s trained enough to be able to draw Yoohyeon from memory but she still takes her sweet time calculating the slope of her nose, the dip of her eyes, the little furrow in between eyebrows as she concentrates. Wants to get it as close to the real thing as possible.

It takes her too long to finish, the pads of her fingers grey with charcoal as she touches up the shadows.

“See,” Yoohyeon’s suddenly close, voice by Minji’s ear and the heat of her body felt even through the thin shirt Minji’s wearing. “, impossible.”

Minji sighs, trying to disguise the sudden shortness of breath with irritation. The thick book is on the side, Yoohyeon’s highlighters squished under its weight, and Minji decides to capitalize on the younger woman’s break. “Move.”

She pats Yoohyeon’s shin until she’s opening her legs, Minji fitting her hips in the space.

“Uh,” she doesn’t need to look back to know that Yoohyeon has a dumbfounded expression on her face, fingers clenching against the blanket, not knowing where to put them. “What are you doing, unnie?”

Minji hums, balancing her open sketchbook on her thigh before bringing out her phone. “Trust me.”

She uploads the picture on Instagram: Minji clearly sitting in between the legs of someone, a biochemistry book cut off at the edge of the frame, Yoohyeon immortalized in a sketch that’s visible for all to see, the south quad in front of them, and their hands intertwined on top of Yoohyeon’s lap.

“Genius,” Yoohyeon whispers against the side of her head, watching as people start liking the picture.

They keep track of who reacted to their picture and when they’re satisfied, Minji leans more heavily against the younger woman.

“Nap?”

Yoohyeon doesn’t answer, just adjusts her arms so it’s wound around Minji’s waist.

They fell asleep like that.

::

Everything’s loud.

“Nice hoodie,” Handong teases as a greeting, shouldering her way past other people until she’s standing beside Minji next to the food table.

“Thanks,” Minji beams, making a show of spreading her arms.

“Look at you, domestic and shit,” her best friend quips, shaking her head as she reads the large BIOCHEMIST on the hoodie’s front, KIM YOOHYEON undoubtedly embroidered on the back in a similar fashion. “Ugh, romance.”

“Find a girlfriend and let’s see if you’re still disgusted if she gives you a hoodie.”

“Try this,” Handong deflects instead, shoving a red cup under Minji’s nose. It smells like strawberries and tastes like cherries. It’s confusing. “Think someone spiked it?”

Minji wipes her lips, grimacing. “Definitely.”

She doesn’t even know how someone sneaked alcohol inside the building but a lot of students don’t seem to be complaining. Minji watches as the still-wet paint runs down a hastily painted banner, reading something about the dean of the fine and performance arts department getting an award for their dissertation.

“Someone should always get an award,” Handong happily munches on a pizza, sticking close to Minji. “No class for the whole day plus free food.”

“Hey!” A boy with paint specks caked under his nails bumps into the wall beside them. Minji vaguely remembers him as Handong’s classmate. “The dance department’s going to have a show on the 5th in half an hour. You guys coming?”

Perfect.

“Sure!”

::

“Unnie?”

Yoohyeon’s voice filters from the hallway and Minji grimaces, huffing out a breath while stealing a glance in the mirror. She’s only half-dressed.

“Wait!” She yells back, the keys hooked at the back of her door falling when she pulls it open too fast, one hand still clutching her unzipped dress tight against her chest. “I forgot how thin the doors are. Sorry, everything’s a mess.”

“It’s…” Yoohyeon’s eyes slip down to the expanse of skin just there, kneeling to pick up the keys, and harshly reminding Minji of how grossly unprepared she is. “... fine.”

“You can sit anywhere, I’ll just,” she walks backward slowly, weight heavy on the balls of her feet. “, finish my hair and make-up.”

Yoohyeon nods, gingerly sitting on the top of Minji’s hastily made bed. She looks unfairly good, making a simple oversized tee tucked into light denim jeans undeniably attractive. Plus, she always smells good.

Minji applies lipstick, smacking her lips and her eyes automatically looking at Yoohyeon through the mirror’s reflection. Her girlfriend is taking in her dorm room with wide eyes, blushing when her eyes brush past a laundry basket.

Crap, I forgot to shove it inside the closet.

“Where’s your, uh, roommate?”

“Honestly? I’m too nervous to remember what she said before she went out.” Minji drapes her hair over one side of her head then to the other, humming when she’s satisfied with the volume. Still clutching the front of her dress, she walks barefoot toward the younger woman. “Zip me?”

Yoohyeon doesn’t so much as graze Minji’s skin with a finger.

Minji doesn’t know how to feel about that.

“You’re nervous?” Yoohyeon asks softly. If Minji focuses, she can hear the disbelieving tone in the alpha’s voice. Like it’s so impossible for Minji to feel this way.

“Aren’t you?”

Yoohyeon lends her a hand as she puts on her shoes. “I guess I am.”

Minji straightens her back, slinging a purse over one shoulder before reaching to cup Yoohyeon’s cheeks in her palms softly.

“It’s just a stupid party,” she whispers, smiling when she sees Yoohyeon’s shoulders sag slightly, relaxing. “Everyone already knows anyway.”

Yoohyeon exhales slowly, closing her eyes, and something inside of Minji tells her to not look away.

So she doesn’t.

“Okay,” Yoohyeon grins back at her, still shaky at the edges and her hands are clammy when she takes Minji’s but it feels solid. Here. Right in front of her. “, let’s go to a stupid party.”

The weird energy between them doesn’t dissipate even when they arrive at a townhouse a few blocks away from campus. Yoohyeon gets them both a beer each and Minji immediately peels off the label with her thumb.

Yoohyeon keeps close to her, almost caging Minji against the kitchen counter, sipping her drink slowly. If it were any other person, they’d think the alpha is relaxed, but Minji’s close enough to see the muscle of her jaw twitching and her fingers tapping against the neck of the bottle.

Minji’s about to open her mouth to say something—anything—but her eyes see movement beyond Yoohyeon’s shoulder and her brain just stops.

Quickly, she loops her hand around a thin wrist, pulling Yoohyeon impossibly closer, making the younger woman tumble into the space beside her until she’s also leaning against the wall. The action startles Yoohyeon but when she sees Minji’s quick glance in front of them, she catches on.

Bora nods in their direction from the other side of the kitchen, sidestepping to mix herself a drink. They both hold their breaths, thinking that this is it, but then the weird expression on Bora’s face morphs into something else before Minji can relax.

She’s smiling, striding over with nothing on her face to give away her emotions.

“Hey, enjoying the party?”

Minji feels Yoohyeon suck in a breath beside her. She does damage control by looping an arm around the alpha’s waist, getting in her space.

“It’s lovely,” Minji gives her a smile of her own and it grows when she catches Bora’s eyes darting down to her hand clutching at Yoohyeon’s waist. “Thanks for the invite.”

When Bora’s eyes come back up, Minji subtly pinches Yoohyeon.

“The music’s nice.”

Minji cringes at the younger woman’s stiffness, sighing to herself.

Bora, however, doesn’t seem to find anything amiss.

“Cool! Let me know if you guys need anything,” she sounds genuine and for a moment, Minji understands why Yoohyeon fell for Bora. “And congrats. On getting together.”

Minji narrows her eyes but there’s nothing else there. Nothing left to unpack. And Minji feels nervous at the frozen expression on Yoohyeon’s face.

“Well,” Minji awkwardly starts, getting worried. “, as far as finally meeting your ex goes, I think that went well.”

Yoohyeon blinks exactly four times before her eyebrows furrow, the peeling skin on the corner of her bottom lip visible from the kitchen light, then she pries Minji’s fingers off of her waist one by one.

“I think,” her voice is hoarse even though she hasn’t said more than three words in the last five minutes. She’s looking at the space in front of her the way she does when she’s solving something complex in her homework. When she turns to Minji, she looks at her like she’s a damn exam. “, I think we should break this up.”

::

Minji remembers exactly how Yoohyeon and her got together.

But let’s start with how they met again.

Minji just got back from her hometown, her junior year starts in a week, summer stubbornly sticking around, and when she remembers Handong discovering a newly-opened cafe just a cartwheel away from the art building, Minji leaves her unpacked suitcase and sets about in her mission to get something cold to drink before she sweats through another shirt.

Even from the outside of the cafe, it looks like someone’s Pinterest board came to life; all earthy tones, large wood beams visible from the high-ceiling, and industrial pipes left exposed on the wall. There’s even one wall dedicated to taking pictures. Complete with little succulents.

It’s a little bit overwhelming. Cute but overwhelming.

“Minji-unnie?”

She startles, head whipping up from where she’s searching through her wallet to see Kim Yoohyeon standing on the other side of the counter, a can of whipped cream in hand.

“Yoohyeon!”

They used to sit next to each other for AP chemistry back in high school even though Yoohyeon is a year lower than them, the alpha letting her borrow her notes with nothing in return. Minji would never hesitate to say that the younger woman was her favorite junior back then.

Apart from Yoohyeon being the one behind the counter whenever Minji gets her daily caffeine fix, they don’t really do much apart from his and hellos and small talk. Though Minji learns through the rumor mill—which is really just Handong—that Yoohyeon and another junior omega from the dance department, Kim Bora, used to date.

Keyword: used to.

“It was a pretty quiet breakup. Just before summer break, I think.” Handong says with a paintbrush clenched in between her teeth. “But they dated fairly short, too, so.”

And because Minji can’t help it, she asks around. Apparently, Yoohyeon and Bora don’t seem to be having any problems.

Weird.

So, now, here’s how Minji and Yoohyeon got together:

The first time Yoohyeon sees Minji on campus instead of the cafe, the younger woman is crying.

“Yoohyeon?”

“Fuck,” Yoohyeon harshly wipes at her cheeks as she keeps her head down, a dry chuckle escaping her mouth. “I’m a mess, unnie.”

“I’ve seen you as a teenager,” Minji tries to lighten up the mood, gingerly setting her bag on the ground before sitting down on the bench with the proper distance from shaking shoulders. “Nothing is worse than that.”

Yoohyeon glares at her with puffy and red-rimmed eyes, posture slouched. “You’re older by just a year, unnie.”

“Still.” Minji doesn’t know why but she stays, waiting until Yoohyeon composes herself again. They’re at a fairly secluded area behind the library, the noise of the industrial aircon lined at the wall blocking out any other sound around them. When Yoohyeon smiles wetly, Minji offers a handkerchief. “Okay?”

“My ex broke up with me three months ago and it just hit me today.”

Minji bites down the I know at the tip of her tongue. Instead, she focuses on the last part.

“You still… like her?”

“Maybe? I have this stupid idea inside my head that thinks the breakup was unfair.” Yoohyeon shrugs, staring ahead blankly. “She seems so fine and here I am. Crying behind the library.”

This is definitely not Minji’s forte. She fumbles, tumbling the words inside her head as she tries to find the right words to say. “Was it not mutual?”

“No, it… it was,” it sounds like a question, like Yoohyeon doesn’t know why she also agreed back then. “But I want to…”

“Get her back?”

“Make her feel something.” Yoohyeon clenches her fists in her lap. When she finally stares at Minji, she looks so tired. “I just want to make her feel something. Whatever it is. Just for one last time.”

Minji doesn’t know how Yoohyeon thinks she’s perfect for her plan and Minji doesn’t know why she’s even considering it.

“Make her jealous?” she repeats, tasting the words on her tongue. It feels weird.

Yoohyeon nods. “You two are in the same building and the same year. She’ll be bound to see you around.”

“Until when?” Minji isn’t agreeing—not yet—so she doesn’t know why she’s asking.

“Until something happens.” Yoohyeon sits up straight and despite their almost similar heights, Minji feels suddenly small under her gaze. “Help me, unnie. Please?”

Even without the please, Minji knows that she already agreed the moment she saw Yoohyeon crying.

She sighs.

“Who knew letting me borrow your notes with nothing in return is going to bite me in the ass one day.”

Minji plays along: Yoohyeon walks her to her building most mornings and if they have more time, they’ll sit on the bench outside the building where the dance rooms are visible the most, amping up the PDA when one of them spots Bora near the windows; posting couple pictures on Instagram with enough clichés to make any romance movie pale in comparison, lurking on the page until Bora—or Siyeon, Bora’s best friend and the only mutual friend Minji has with her—gives the picture a little heart; and even prancing around their building wearing Yoohyeon’s hoodie, making sure the KIM YOOHYEON at the back is visible when Bora is near.

Two months later and here they are at the climax of their little show where every little moment they’ve accumulated all semester is finally put to use.

And Bora just wishes them congratulations.

Minji thinks that with all the scenarios they’ve thought of how this moment will go, this is the one they were too scared to mention. The fear of making everything seem too real.

“Okay,” she agrees. Way too easily. “, sure.”

Yoohyeon smiles at her. Strained. “It didn’t work.”

Minji just stares. Really takes in Yoohyeon’s face. And in a sudden burst of clarity, she finally understands the feeling bubbling at the pit of her stomach all night.

I don’t want to break up.

“Do you want to get out of here?”

“Milkshake?”

Again, Minji agrees.

In the morning, trudging her feet towards the younger woman’s dorm with hot breakfast in her arms, Minji curses herself for falling.

“Morning,” she chirps as soon as Yoohyeon opens the door, hair sticking up at the back and looking adorably confused.

“Unnie, what’re you doing here?”

“Breakfast,” she holds up the paper bag in the same fashion Yoohyeon did for the past two months. “Just because we fake broke up doesn’t mean we’re not friends anymore. You can cry on unnie’s shoulder if you want to.”

Minji, despite the curtains closing on their little show, can’t help but wish for an encore.

::

It takes them breaking up to finally hang out as friends.

“I bet I can beat you in every game in the arcade.”

They’re in Yoohyeon’s room, supposedly studying, but Minji is idly scrolling through her phone on the alpha’s bed.

Yoohyeon rolls her eyes, biting the bait as she puts away her notes, getting the keys to her car. “You sure about that?”

Minji feels guilty whenever she expects arms to wrap around her waist or for the familiar weight to settle on her shoulders and there are times she thinks Yoohyeon will.

It’s just wishful thinking, of course.

They’re just friends now.

(That thought never fails to make Minji frown.)

::

“I thought you were staying the whole night?”

“That was the plan,” Yoohyeon wobbles down the steps in front of the library, her overnight bag full to the brim with books and notes. “Until we got kicked out because of something I already forgot, fuck. I need to study.”

When the younger woman finally sets foot on the sidewalk, Minji forcefully turns her around, taking out two books from the bag to carry herself. Yoohyeon looks like she’s two footsteps away from breaking her back.

“What you need is sleep.” It’s not an exaggeration. Minji knows for a fact that Yoohyeon barely got any sleep this week. “How’re you gonna answer your exam if you’re going to fall asleep if you blink once?”

Someone sighs in the background. “I wish I had a girlfriend to pick me from the library at night.”

Two familiar women are going down the stairs and Minji vaguely remembers them from pictures and little stories Yoohyeon tells her. It’s Gaheyon and Yubin, Yoohyeon’s best friends. The sound of the word girlfriend tumbling out of Gahyeon’s mouth makes Minji’s heart thud loudly inside her chest.

“Unnie—I can call you unnie, right? Cool—I don’t know how we haven’t met yet but I’d like to meet you again when I’m not delirious from sleep deprivation,” Yubin rambles, not giving anyone a chance to speak apart from Yoohyeon’s hey. Yubin ignores her best friend. “You two really suit each other.”

Minji blushes so hard she’s dizzy from how fast blood traveled to her cheeks. Yoohyeon sputters, stuttering as she tries to get the right words out and oh.

They forgot to tell people that they broke up.

“Aww, look, you broke them,” Gahyeon coos, enjoying how riled up the two women are. “You’ve been together for what? Months now? Honeymoon phase is still not over, I see.”

Yoohyeon gives up, shuts her mouth tightly before marching away with a hand fisted tightly on Minji’s shirt and walking towards the direction of the dorms.

Minji hastily throws a goodbye behind her back but as soon as it’s just the two of them, she can’t help but feel confused with how Yoohyeon reacted.

She’s still hung up on Bora… right?

::

It was a moment, Yoohyeon’s sure of it.

Of course, she knows—objectively speaking—that they make a pretty couple. She spent an absurd amount of time zooming in on pictures they take together and wondering if it’s enough. If they look real enough.

She doesn’t need to zoom in on Minji’s face to know that the omega does a good job of putting on a show.

You two really suit each other.

It’s a little jarring to hear that now, uncalled for now that she knows they aren’t acting, throwing Yoohyeon off-guard that she can blame on the lack of sleep as she trips on air. Minji’s already reaching for her even with two heavy books in her arms, concern pulled tight across her face and Yoohyeon looks away quickly.

There it is again. That feeling.

Like it takes too much energy in her to look away from Minji.

“I’ll drop my stuff at the lobby,” Yoohyeon can’t help the disappointment leaking into her voice when her building comes into view. Hers is closer to the library than Minji’s. “Then I’ll walk you home.”

“You need to—”

“I can sleep later, unnie.” Minji’s endearing when she’s worried like this. Cute. “I want to make sure you get home safely.”

Minji pouts. “Fine.”

The older woman’s wearing a large hoodie and denim shorts, having just got back from dinner with some of her classmates when Yoohyeon slipped and texted her that they got kicked out from the library. Minji was quick to say that the library’s on her way from the restaurant and that they can walk together.

Her cheeks are a bit red and Yoohyeon wonders if she drank.

“Did you drink?”

“Hmm? No, why?”

“Your face is red.”

Yoohyeon bites her lip when Minji looks away, the red deepening.

She drops her stuff in the lobby, waving off Minji’s concern that someone might take her stuff. Alphas are way too sensitive to the smell of someone else’s property.

Her mind vividly flashes back to the time that Minji used to wear her clothes—her scent. It left Yoohyeon reeling the whole day the first time it happened, spacing out at odd times, and only pulled out of it when Minji excitedly called her after class to say that Bora looked at her oddly before realizing she smells like Yoohyeon.

“We’re here,” Minji mutters, fingers covered by the sleeve of her hoodie. “Thanks for walking me back. You really didn’t have to.”

“Of course,” Yoohyeon damn near sighs out. Somewhere along the way during the short walk from hers to Minji’s dorm, she grew softer, tongue a little looser. “, that’s what girlfriends do, right?”

Fuck.

Minji blushes so prettily, more visible since she’s got her hair up in a ponytail. Yoohyeon doesn’t want the moment to end so soon so she tugs the corner of the hoodie’s pocket, pulling Minji closer as she hugs her goodbye. Can’t help but nuzzle at the softness of her hair, lightly scenting the omega by nuzzling her cheek at the side of Minji’s head.

Either from the night or her actions, Minji shudders in her arms anyway, spine bending forward and into each other’s spaces some more.

“Text me when you get home.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She waits until Minji’s back disappears into the elevator before turning.

But she doesn’t go home. Not yet.

She feels restless, insides buzzing with energy so she heads for the park instead. There’s a 24/7 convenience store that she ducks inside to, buying ramen and canned coffee before settling down to sit outside.

BESTEST GF (caretaker) [11:34 PM]

I’m sleepy

I told you to text me when you got home

Yoohyeon slurps some soup, resting the cup on the ground and balancing her chopsticks on top of the coffee.

Puppywuppy [11:35 PM]

Got hungry

What she gets in return is a selfie of Minji, blanket drawn all the way up to her nose, eyebrows furrowed in the way that means she’s scolding but the softness of the lamp behind her along with her hair fanned out below her dulls the desired effect.

Yoohyeon blinks harshly as she finds herself staring at the screen, unblinking until her phone screen goes dark with inactivity.

I want to kiss you.

BESTEST GF (caretaker) [11:39 PM]

I can’t wait up for you

I’m sleeping now

Puppywuppy [11:40 PM]

I promise to text you once I get home

Good night unnie

It’s… weird—this feeling inside of her.

It’s familiar but not. It’s the feeling of liking someone but more. More intense, bigger, more consuming.

It’s the same churning feeling inside her gut that night they met Bora.

The realization that she no longer cares about how her ex will react and was startingly aware that she’s more concerned about how Minji feels about the entire thing. Yoohyeon felt guilty that night—how easily Minji seems to go along with what she suggests—but when the older woman showed up at her door the next day like nothing drastic between them happened, everything became clear.

She cares about Minji.

The more time they spent together, the more she realizes that… she hadn’t really thought of Bora. Not in a while anyway.

Yoohyeon stays in the park for a while, the sky’s already deeply blue by the time she dusts off her pants and starts walking home.

Puppywuppy [2:12 AM]

Just got home hehe

I like you a lot unnie

Can’t wait to see you again

[Read 6:43 AM]

Minji doesn’t reply.

“This one, please.” Yoohyeon keeps eyeing the other pastry at the center of the display and it takes her five seconds before she caves in. “And also one of that pink one, thank you.”

The cashier thinks nothing of Yoohyeon’s jittery energy, quietly packing the pastries as the alpha reopens her phone for the nth time.

Still nothing.

She wonders if she should be worried. Minji usually sends her a link to a funny video first thing in the morning. Was what she said too much? Did she finally cross a line?

Puppywuppy [10:31 AM]

Unnie

I saw a pink cake and thought of you

Can I come over?

“Here you go, ma’am.”

She counts the change with her phone face up on the counter, waiting for Minji to open it.

Nothing.

She stares at the little icon on top of Minji’s contact name, smiling widely at the camera. For Yoohyeon.

A violent squeeze in her gut has Yoohyeon reaching for the phone, dialing before she can think twice. Something’s wrong. She can feel it.

Something happened and Minji’s not picking up her phone and she bursts through the bakery doors, running back to the dorms. She painfully waits for someone to slip out of Minji’s lobby, shoving a foot through the door so she can wriggle her way inside, taking the stairs two at a time because she has no patience to wait for the elevator.

The pastries in her hand are probably jostled hard by now, icing no doubt sticking to the packaging’s walls but she could care less.

Handong opens the door, clearly just woke up and confused to see Yoohyeon panting in the hallway.

“Unnie… she’s—where’s Minji-unnie?”

“At the infirmary. Wait, Yoohyeon, did you run?”

She doesn’t bother asking why, feet already sprinting back down to the ground floor.

Unnie’s at the infirmary. She’s hurt. She won’t answer my calls and she’s hurt and no one fucking told me.

“Kim Minji,” she pants out at the reception desk, knows she looks like a mess. “, where’s Kim Minji?”

The nurse is unbothered, looking down at her through the tip of her nose. “What’s your name?”

“Kim Yoohyeon. Here’s my ID, uh, just in case.”

She squirms in place as when eyes bore into hers, the nurse double-checks her identity before grunting, filling a box with something Yoohyeon can’t see from beyond the counter before gesturing for her to follow. She’s led to a wing in the infirmary that she’s never been before, going through a sealed door before they end up in a sanitized hallway with identical metal doors.

They stop in front of a door that has the number 3 engraved in the middle and Yoohyeon realizes just where she is.

The heat chambers.

“You’re listed as her emergency alpha,” the nurse drawls, holding out the box for Yoohyeon to take. “You’re only allowed twenty-four hours together. It’s just usually to help the omega adjust. I’ll fetch you tomorrow.”

He unlocks the door and walks away. Minji’s scent leaks from the ajar door and Yoohyeon’s grip tightens on the box.

She opens it and it’s condoms.

In her size.

::

“Unnie?”

I wasn’t imagining it. She’s really here.

Minji watches as Yoohyeon slowly inches her way inside the room. The alpha looks haggard, clutching a box against her chest and something that looks like food on the other.

“Hey,” it’s a lame greeting, she knows, but now that Yoohyeon is here, she can’t help but feel insecure with the measly nest she made with the too-clean blankets. “, how… how did you know I was here?”

The door closes behind Yoohyeon and Minji’s thankful she’s sitting down on the small couch in front of a small TV, sure that she’ll buckle under her weight the moment she smells Yoohyeon.

“You didn’t answer my calls and texts.” Waving her cellphone, Yoohyeon stays by the door. “So I went to your place. Handong-unnie told me you were here but…”

“She didn’t tell you my heat came last night?”

Yoohyeon blushes but doesn’t look away from Minji. Saying it out loud makes it more real.

“No.” Slowly, she starts walking forward, eyes growing dark with every step. Minji bites a whimper, crossing her legs before remembering that she’s not wearing any shorts, the fabric too scratchy. Yoohyeon looks at her thighs and it burns. “Was it after I took you home?”

“When I was asleep.” Taking a shaky breath as Yoohyeon stops in front of her, Minji presses herself more firmly against the seat. “I woke up and knew it was happening. Checked myself in here before I could text you.”

Yoohyeon places her things on the table, Minji having to crane her neck upward to look at her. She shivers at the scent of Yoohyeon’s arousal tickling her nose, mouth watering embarrassingly. Yoohyeon watches the bob of her throat.

“So,” her voice is already rough, a little wrecked. “, you put me down as your emergency alpha.”

“Yes,” she sighs, unable to stop herself from breaking eye contact to fall forward, burying her nose against Yoohyeon’s stomach, inhaling her scent. She feels herself leaking. “I… changed it when we were still a thing. Forgot to take it back. Don’t want to take it back.”

The last part slips out unintentionally, slowly getting drunk on the alpha’s scent.

“Unnie,” Yoohyeon sounds strained and Minji springs away suddenly, ashamed.

“Shit, sorry, I—“ she stands on soft legs, wobbling away from the alpha until they’re on opposite sides of the room. “You shouldn’t have… they don’t call emergency alphas until it’s for extreme cases. That's why they took our phones, too.”

“Don’t—“ Yoohyeon moves to follow her before she freezes mid-step. “Do you not want me here?”

This is spiraling way out of her control.

“How am I supposed to answer that?” Minji drags a hand down her face, the other tugging the hem of her shirt, hyper-aware of how much skin is out for the alpha to look at. A thrill shoots down her spine, scent spiking at the thought of Yoohyeon enjoying the view.

“With a yes or no, unnie.” Yoohyeon doesn’t come closer but she pins Minji with her stare. “Do you want me here?”

“Do you want to be here?” Minji doesn’t mean to snap but she asks the question like a snake out to sting.

“Yes,” comes Yoohyeon’s unwavering answer. So sure. “But only if you want me to.”

It’s…

Minji gives in.

“I’m out of sync with my schedule,” she starts, feeling her confidence build back up now that she knows Yoohyeon wants to be here and is concerned enough that she looks like she ran like a headless chicken just to find where she was. “, do you know why?”

Yoohyeon sits on the edge of the bed and Minji sees her chance. She moves close, smiling when the alpha parts her legs as in instinct, splaying her fingers on top of fabric-covered collarbones.

“No?”

“You think you’re sneaky, scenting me last night,” she rubs the collar of Yoohyeon’s shirt, trapping it between a thumb and forefinger, pulling it down slightly to reveal more skin. “It’s because of you. Your scent set me off. And you know what else?”

Yoohyeon already looks wrecked when she digs her hand on soft hair, gently making a fist to make their eyes meet.

“What?”

“I like you, too,” Minji sighs out, bending down to press a kiss against the alpha’s forehead. “You don’t know how I felt to wake up to a vivid dream about you, with your scent, and read that you can’t wait to see me.”

“Unnie…”

Slowly, Minji picks up her own feet, kneeling on the bed beside Yoohyeon’s hips, lowering herself down until she’s straddling the younger woman, moaning as she settles firmly against a stiff cock.

“Yes, baby?”

She bites her lip to stifle a moan when Yoohyeon bucks her hips unexpectedly at the pet name. Interesting.

“Fuck,” Yoohyeon’s already panting, palming at Minji’s hips. “, the condoms… how’d they know my size? Did you list that one down, too?”

This time, it’s Minji’s turn to fluster, turning away, and has no time to react when Yoohyeon decides to play dirty by rolling their hips together.

“Thought about it,” Minji whispers, now moving, following the pace set by Yoohyeon’s hand on her hips. “, thought about your cock before. And it’s not as subtle as you think when you pop a semi when wearing sweats, baby.”

Yoohyeon moans, dirty, and the sound of it shakes Minji’s bones until they both lose it.

They undress quickly, Minji wasting no time in pushing Yoohyeon’s shoulder until she lays flat on the bed.

“Gonna ride me, unnie?”

Minji softly fists Yoohyeon’s cock, jerking it off while reaching for a condom. There are five in the box in total and she plans to use every single one of them before their twenty-four hours are up. Slowly, she unravels the latex, twisting her wrist as she secures the end to the base, and Yoohyeon’s hips rise to chase the friction.

“Shh,” Minji positions herself, drooling as she feels the tip nudging against her entrance. “, yeah, I will.”

She sinks down, sucking a breath through her teeth as the head pops inside of her. It’s… Yoohyeon’s big. Bigger than the three fingers she’s used to. Girthier, too. And it doesn’t help that Minji feels herself clenching in time with her heartbeat.

“Oh my god.”

“Baby,” Minji feels like she’ll break in half and she still can’t feel the heat of the alpha’s skin against the bottom of her thighs. “I’ll put it in one go, fuck. Maybe it’s better that way.”

“Okay,” Yoohyeon nods frantically, fists clenching against the sheets, not trusting herself to hold onto the omega just yet. “, please please please. Wanna be inside you so bad, unnie.”

At the desperate tears pooling on the corner of Yoohyeon’s eyes, Minji finally sinks all the way down.

She screams.

“Fuck,” she whines, long and drawn out, feeling a tiny orgasm shaking her body and she feels the haze of heat finally enveloping her mid, thick as smog and dizzying. “Feels so good inside me, baby. The best.”

Planting her hands on top of a firm stomach, Minji takes a deep breath, ears ringing with Yoohyeon’s groan whenever her inside involuntary flutters around the thick cock, and she starts moving.

The head of the alpha’s cock rubs deliciously against her front wall, catching whenever she pulls out and hitting it with deadly precision every time sinks back in. It’s like the curve of Yoohyeon’s cock is made just for her, molded for her cunt to use, and it’s absolutely divine.

“Don’t get up,” Yoohyeon babbles, eyes glazed over so hard that Minji wonders if she set off a mini-rut within the alpha. She shivers, hoping that it’s the case. She whimpers when Yoohyeon moves to plant both feet on the bed, pulling Minji back down on her cock. “Don’t wanna get out of you. Even if it’s just an inch.”

Minji falls forward, taking in shaky breaths whenever Yoohyeon thrusts up impossibly deeper, and she does her part by swirling her hips in small figure eights, delirious with pleasure and the unrelenting pressure against that one spot inside of her that she’s only reached once with a discreetly purchased dildo when Yoohyeon and her were fake dating.

Yoohyeon cums unexpectedly, hips snapping forward so suddenly that Minji shouts, didn’t know her cunt has any room for more.

“Oh my god,” she shakes, orgasm knocked out of her, and she feels herself making a mess. Can feel it when she sits back to stuff herself full of cock and feels how wet the top of Yoohyeon’s thighs are. “Baby.”

“Don’t—” Yoohyeon hisses, slowly pulling out and ripping the condom off. It makes a mess. She quickly pulls another one and rolls it down. “, don’t call me that right after I bust a nut, fuck.”

“Why?” Minji moans out, falling on the bed and letting the alpha spoon her, slipping the cock from behind. It somehow feels bigger inside of her in this position. “I love calling you my baby.”

Bruising grip wraps around an ankle, Yoohyeon pulling a leg up, pressing deeper, more insistently, until Minji opens her mouth in a silent scream.

“Because it makes me want to fuck you harder.”

Minji knows a challenge when she hears one.

She reaches backward, fisting Yoohyeon’s hair until their lips are a breath apart.

“Baby.”

Her moans are drowned out as their lips slot against each other, messy and frantic.

Their first kiss.

::

“I promise to take you out on a proper date after,” Yoohyeon whispers, dropping a quick kiss on Minji’s lips, mindful of the nurse watching them from down the hallway. “I hope I scented you well enough to help.”

Minji smiles, sly and it’s embarrassing how fast arousal zips through Yoohyeon’s body at the sight of it.

“Don’t worry, baby. You did a very good job.” She almost pushes her way back inside the room but someone clears their throat. Yoohyeon glares at the nurse. Minji laughs softly. “See you in two days, pup.”

::

“Gross,” Handong wrinkles her nose.

“Who needs dessert when these two are enough to get the whole campus in a sugar rush?” Gahyeon teases.

“I’m so single,” Yubin whines.

Minji is Yoohyeon’s girlfriend. Yoohyeon is Minji’s girlfriend. What people don’t know is how it happened.
