Chapter Text
“I’ll come back to get you after school is over,” Hinata’s mother said, trying to calm the young boy down. Hinata sobbed, grabbing his mother’s hand. He didn’t want her to leave. He had never been away from his parents before. He looked around and saw that most of the other kids were crying as well, especially one girl with long, unevenly cut hair. “Go on Hajime. Go and make friends.”
Hinata sniffled and nodded. He still didn’t want his mother to leave, but he knew there wasn’t anything he could do to stop her. She had told him what school would be like so he needed to show her that he was strong and could be on his own.
Hinata looked around and saw that there was one person who wasn’t crying. A young boy with wild white hair, he seemed to be drawing something. Hinata slowly approached the boy and looked over his shoulder. He seemed to be drawing a fluffy dog. Hinata sat down next to the boy. The boy looked up from his drawing and gave a small bow.
“Hello. My name is Komaeda Nagito,” the boy introduced himself. Hinata hurried to bow back.
“I-I’m Hinata Hajime,” Hinata stuttered. Komaeda gave him a kind smile and sat back down. Hinata looked on the boy’s desk and saw a massive box of crayons. His mother had told him they couldn’t buy a big box like that because it was too expensive. Hinata stared in awe at the box and Komaeda seemed to notice.
“Do you want one?” Komaeda asked as he grabbed the box and showed Hinata. Hinata stared at Komaeda in shock.
“C-Can I?” Hinata asked shyly. Komaeda nodded and showed all of the crayons. Hinata cautiously picked out his favorite color, a mossy green. Hinata held the crayon close to him. “Th-Thank you, Nagito.”
Komaeda nodded and returned to his drawing. Hinata smiled widely. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. Hinata already decided that he liked this boy and wanted to be his friend.
“Hey hey,” a soft voice spoke up. Hinata turned around to see a young girl approaching them. She was staring at a game console in her hands. “Do either of you want to play with me?”
“Sure!” Hinata said before remembering his manners and bowing. “My name is Hinata Hajime.”
“Nanami Chiaki,” the girl greeted. Hinata looked at Komaeda. He wanted the other boy to join, but he seemed to be absorbed in his drawing. Nanami brought Hinata to a punch of pillows at the edge of the room and sat down on them. Hinata got comfortable next to her and asked her to teach him how to play. They didn’t have any video games at his home since they were expensive. Nanami told him all the rules and they got to playing. Nanami easily defeated Hinata in many rounds and the boy huffed. “It’s okay. You’ll get better over time.”
Hinata smiled at the girl. It seems like he already made two friends. Hinata stood up and walked back to Komaeda. Nanami followed and set her things on the desk next to Hinata. Hinata smiled at her and looked at Komaeda’s drawing. He was almost finished. Hinata held the crayon he was gifted close. When Komaeda was finished with his drawing, he set his crayons down and looked at Hinata. Hinata blushed and smiled at the other boy. He didn’t know why he was feeling shy all of a sudden. He guessed it was because he was grateful. Hinata decided he should probably thank Komaeda in a way other than words. He wrapped his arms around Komaeda in a hug. Komaeda tensed and raised his arms slightly. Hinata wondered why Komaeda wasn’t hugging back. He seemed nervous and lost. Didn’t his parents hug him? Komaeda finally seemed to understand as he wrapped his arms around Hinata. Hinata smiled and squeezed Komaeda gently. Komaeda felt skinny and Hinata wondered if he ate enough.
“Let’s be friends, Nagito,” Hinata said. Komaeda nodded and gripped Hinata’s shirt. Hinata was glad that he made two friends. He had already forgotten about how sad he was when his mother left. Hinata broke away from the hug and sat down. Komaeda seemed a bit disappointed and sat down as well. The teacher started speaking, telling everyone to find a seat. All of the kids hurried to find seats while Hinata waited to see what they would do now. He felt a lot better now that he had two people he felt good around.
The teacher introduced herself as Miss Monomi and told everyone that they would be going around introducing themselves. Hinata immediately felt anxious. He would have to talk in front of all these people? What if he messed up? Hinata looked at Komaeda and saw that he seemed nervous as well. Miss Monomi pointed to a random student. She was pointing at a young boy with interesting brown hair. He stood up confidently and stood in front of the class.
“I am Hanamura Teruteru,” the boy introduced himself with a bow. Hinata was jealous of how much confidence the boy seemed to have. “I hope we can all get along.”
Hinata felt uncomfortable as the boy eyed some of the girls before returning to his seat. Hinata sighed in relief when he realized that with the current line up he wouldn’t have to introduce himself for a while. The next person to stand up was a pudgy boy. He walked to the front of the class and fiddled with his hands for a moment.
“My name is Togami Byakuya,” the boy said. Monomi shot him a look and the boy looked away from her.
“Tell the truth Mitarai-Kun,” Monomi scolded. The boy sighed.
“My name is Mitarai Ryota,” the boy bowed and then hurried to his seat. Hinata wondered why the boy would lie about his name. The next person was a pretty girl with red hair.
“I am Koizumi Mahiru. It’s a pleasure to meet you all,” the girl said politely. Hinata noticed that she had a small camera with her and wondered why. The next person to introduce themself was another girl. She was blonde and was wearing a traditional kimono.
“I’m Saionji Hiyoko. Don’t expect me to be friendly with all of you ugos,” the girl said. Monomi gave her a warning look, but Saionji ignored it and sat back down next to Koizumi. The next person to stand up was a pretty girl with long silver hair.
“My name is Pekoyama Peko. I hope we can all have respect for each other,” Pekoyama bowed. The next person was a boy with short blonde hair.
“Kuzuryuu Fuyuhiko,” the boy said shortly before walking back to his seat next to Pekoyama. Hinata noticed that the two of them seemed close. He guessed that they knew each other before school. The next person was a brightly clothed girl with colored hair.
“My name is Mioda Ibuki! Ibuki would love to spend time with all of you!” The girl said excitedly. She hopped back to her seat and was replaced by a girl that Hinata identified as the one who was crying the most earlier. She still seemed sad and worried.
“M-My name is Tsu-Tsumiki Mikan. I-I’m sorry if I get in anyone’s way,” Tsumiki stuttered. She hurried back to her seat after. Hinata felt bad for the girl and wondered if she needed some help. The next person was a young boy with intense eyes.
“Hello! My name is Nidai Nekomaru! I hope we can all have fun together!” The boy’s voice boomed. He bowed politely and was replaced with a girl with long brown hair.
“Owari Akane. We should all play together during recess. I bet I’m the fastest,” the girl said. She was replaced with a flamboyantly dressed boy.
“My mortal name is Tanaka Gundam. If any of you mortals dare, I would delight in engaging in discussion about animals,” the boy said. Hinata had a hard time understanding what he was saying at all. He went back to his seat and a boy with bright pink hair stood at the front.
“My name is Souda Kazuichi. I’m really good with electronics,” the boy introduced himself. Hinata felt slightly panicked when he realized it would soon be his turn. Next, a pretty girl with blonde hair stood at the front.
“I am Sonia Nevermind. My family is from the Novoselic kingdom. I apologize if I say some things wrong,” Sonia bowed. She moved with grace and sat down next to Nanami. Nanami stood up and took her place at the front of the class.
“My name is Nanami Chiaki. I love games and I’m a fan of all genres. Let’s all play together some time,” Nanami said. Hinata felt dread when he realized it was his turn. He nervously walked to the front of the room and tried to ignore everyone’s eyes on him.
“M-My name is Hinata Hajime. It’s nice to meet you all,” Hinata bowed and then hurried back to his seat. Komaeda stood up and went to the front of the class.
“My name is Komaeda Nagito. I’m nothing special but I hope you will all tolerate me,” Komaeda said. Hinata tilted his head. Why was Komaeda talking like that? Komaeda was cool! He shouldn’t be saying that about himself. Komaeda sat down and class officially started.
