Chapter 1: Goodbyes

Chapter Text

Last day of the semester. I would finally follow my family and go to the sunny place they had moved almost five months ago, in sunny California, after living my whole life in the middle of NY.

The history professor handed me my last paper and smirked at me. We had a love-hate relationship.

History was definitely my thing.

Let's just say I have a thing with old people.

Ok, I am a Mediator.

When people die, some of them leave unfinished business, then they find me to help them and lead them to their happily ever after or anything else that waits for them beyond the grave.

I sighed as I got into the deserted metro and sat in one of the first available seats.

Last night I had to deal with a really old and annoying ghost that haunted a house full of old people.

It was a nightmare.

The deal was that I helped some people to deal and help their relatives so they could rest in peace and stop sending messages from the beyond.

Fate had been a bitch to me, being honest.

It was a difficult job, people thought that I was completely out of my mind and I had to fight fuckers from beyond the grave, and trust me, they felt pretty real to me.

Apparently, I had mostly the same abilities and strength the average Avenger had. Strength, almost unbreakable skin and bones, I was faster than most, smarter. All of that helped me do my job.

But no one that didn't require my services - read ghosts and annoying people - knew what I did.

Just imagine my mom when I got brought home by the police by trespassing several times.

Bruises all over, disappearing in the odd hours of the day, strange happenings on the house.

If I told them what it really was, they'd locked me up in a mental institution.

So, no, they didn't know.

No one, in fact.

No one other than the underworld of NY.

We knew each other.

I sighed deeply as I saw four drunk guys approaching me.

Of course, being a Mediator also made me look like a fucking actress. Almost like a model, but with muscles and a little bit more meat.

Theory was that, by being a Mediator, your life would already be extremely difficult and shitty, so all of the other stuff was compensated.

I had loads of luck, intelligence and, well, good looks.

Much to my dismay.

"Hey there, pretty thing. Whatcha doin alone here?" The tallest guy asked me while his friends chuckled.

I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose.

"Just leave me alone." I said, irritated.

"Are we bothering you? Come on, we're going to a party, just you and us." He said, almost touching my face with, now that I noticed, a pocket knife's blade.

Perfect.

I cracked my neck and moved forward, closing the blade over his fingers.

As the guy screamed, I moved to beat the fuck out of the other guys that were dumb enough to attack me.

I fucked them up beautifully before simply getting out of the wagon and heading to Pope's Midnight nightclub, cleaning the blood from my clothes, hands, wrists and face in the bathroom before heading there.

The streets were deserted and the few people that passed looked at me with fear and surprise.

They all knew where people like me were headed.

I got in front of the small inferno and walked the alley beside it.

The front part was a normal club.

The part where I was going was the place the night creatures gathered.

The security guard didn't even try to stop me this time, probably remembering the several broken ribs from our last encounter.

He just stared at me for some seconds before opening the door for me as I raised a brow at him.

I gave him a curt nod as I entered the crowded and dark place.

There was a spell inside that told us who we were based on the color our eyes reflected.

I saw green flashes and red ones, from angels and demons, or mixed ones that had purple or white eyes.

There were occasional normal eyes from people that were dragged into that life from normal ones.

Gamblers, magicians, witches.

Then, there was me.

My eyes were bright yellow in this spell, making the crowd literally swerve from me.

Mediators were brought to earth to balance the scales between good and evil.

So, occasionally, I had to beat some of these fuckers and send them back to wherever hell or heaven they had crawled from.

I headed to the back and the security guard stood in front of me quietly.

"I need to speak to him. Move." I simply said and he frowned at me.

I sighed.

"Move. Or be moved." I told him and he pondered for a second.

New guy.

I threw him in the middle of the dance floor and he landed over a glass table.

The people didn't even look shocked as I slipped inside the Pope's office.

"Miss. What a pleasure." His grave voice greeted me as I took a look on his companions.

God.

Constantine.

"Oh, God. Thought we were supposed to leave the animals outside." I said, sneering at him.

"Nice seeing you too, love." He said and damn, I wanted to punch him.

Balthazar, the demon that was standing at the farthest corner, simply smiled at me while playing with a coin between his fingers.

"To what do I owe the visit?" The Pope asked me and I looked at the towering black sorcerer sitting across me.

"I'm leaving NY." I simply stated and he raised a brow at me.

"Turn the scales and I'll be back to dust your ass to hell." I said and he raised both brows.

He swallowed and nodded slowly as the other men looked at me in shock after I talked like that to the most feared man from the underworld.

I was the only person that guy feared, so you can gather the idea.

"Goodbye, love." I heard Constantine's voice as I turned and left the place.

I took a deep breath as I finally reached the street, right when the paramedics attended the guy's wounds. The security guy.

Poor thing.

I got home and got my suitcases, heading to the airport.
