Chapter Text
—-----Ayla’s Pov—------
It's a quiet night. I don't know where I am. I don't know how I got here. It looks like some kind of void, nothing but emptiness going on for miles and miles. I look ahead of me to see this ugly, tall horse, with holes in her legs and horn.
She has bright green hair, and see through light green, torn up wings. I can't see her eyes. It's almost glitched out. But I can see her mouth, and it's moving? But I can't hear anything! I can hear something next to yelling in my direction, but it's muffled.
Like they're trying to talk to me through a door while my ears are stuffed with cotton balls. I look at the person yelling next to me, and all I see is long, wavy, pastel rainbow hair and giant white wings surrounded by a gold light, before I wake up. I've been having that dream since I turned.
For as long as I can remember I've been in this 'facility'. Heh, facility, more like a prison. Literally. This is Alcatraz. God I hate my life. What I remember of it anyway, hey what a great subject change let's talk about that! Ok so what I do know is that the monster ambassador Frisk Dreemur, a human, Asriel, the monster prince, and Chara, another human, broke the barrier and freed the monsters.
It created a wave of old timey magic from the old mage who made the barrier and any human who had mages in their ancestry, or even monsters in their bloodline, were turned into monsters. Which caused absolute chaos in the human government around the world when the American president turned into a monster, and he was immediately shot. They took all the humans turned monsters, who they named invertos, and fit as many as they could into all abandoned prisons, schools and government buildings, and called them 'inverto facilities'. Anyway, I don't remember anything past that, I just remember waking up on the streets as a skeletal monster with no memories of my life before that, just my name. Every time I try to remember my life before all this, I get a terrible migraine that feels like someone is slamming a sledgehammer into my skull.
I should mention that I am a very rare inverto. Mainly because me and only one other person turned into this type of monster. A skeleton monster. The other person is a 3 year old named Mary. She was dropped off here the day she was born.
Apparently when the barrier broke, instead of turning the mother into inverto, the magic lingered in her stomach and just turned her next child into one instead. Don't ask me for that logic I don't know. Because I was the only other skeleton monster, she was put with me. At first I hated it, but me and Mary have been put through the ringer together, and I know I'd do anything to protect her. She's the cutest, tiniest little skele-girl in the whole world, with her pretty green eye lights and the... the cracks going across her face like a spiderweb.
But that's a story for a different time. Anyway, enough backstory, I am currently sitting in my 'room', a cell, and reading a book given to me by my doctor, Dr. Alphys. Dr. Alphys wasn't always my doctor, at first they gave me a human doctor, because humans are idiots. The book she gave me is called 'Where the sidewalk ends', which is a big book, filled with poems and mini stories. Alphys gave Mary a tub of 240 Crayola crayons and five coloring books, which were My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Minnie Mouse, Sanrio and a child appropriate anime type one.
I also have a laptop, but there isn't really internet in Alcatraz so it's kinda pointless. Man it feels like life goes by slower each day, wishing something would happen already. As I was finishing this thought, the door opened, and a security guard walked in.
"Hey get the kid, and get your shit together, the monsters we contacted when you first got here are finally here to pick you up."
Well, guess someone heard me then. I stopped him before he could leave and asked a very important question.
"Hey wait! Do they at least know about Mary, like did you inform them of Mary?"
He smiled in a weird way I didn't like, and snorted and slammed the door closed. Well, that's not good. Oh well, it doesn't matter. I go over to my bed and crouch down to grab the duffel bag under the bed. I don't have much in terms of things, only the clothes on my back, my book, and my laptop.
Luckily me and Mary's rooms are connected by a door. I go over and open the door a little, and peek out the crack. Mary is on the floor, coloring in her My Little Pony coloring book. My Little Pony is one of her favorite things, her favorite character being Princess Luna. I promised her a long time ago that I would get her My Little Pony toys, which seemed like an empty promise at the time, but now might actually be possible.
I opened the door more and walked over to where she was laying on the floor.
"Heya Chickadee, we're finally getting out of here, there's some nice monsters here to pick us up. Help me pack up alright? Can you put your coloring books in the duffel for me, and put your crayons in the tub please?"
I took the duffel off my shoulder and set it on the ground, and zipped it open. Mary looked up at me with her Big "eyes" with a look of curiosity. The small cracks across her nose bone that go all over the front of her face fills my chest with pain. That never would've happened if I was looking, maybe just paying a little more attention. I was very irresponsible with Mary when she was little. Shaking my head mentally, I take my mind off of that, todays a good day I don't need to be thinking of that.
Mary spoke up, spewing off questions fast, like the tiny toddler she was, catching my attention as I started packing up her crayons.
"Do 'uo know tem? Have 'ou sheen tem? Are tey nishe? Are tey like ush? How many of tem are theres?"
I laughed as her face started to turn green from not taking any breaths.
"Alright chickadee, slow down, take a deep breath!"
She stopped, took an exaggerated breath in, and breathed out. She then looked up at me, probably waiting for an answer.
"Well, I don't know them. They were contacted when I first got here, before you were born! They never responded, but I guess they did now. No I've never seen them, I've never even met them. Yes I'm gonna assume they're just like us, because that's the way it works. Invertos can only go with monsters the same as them. Or someone with the same magic type as them. But us skeletons are special,"
As I said that last sentence, I booped the tip of her nose bone, she giggled, and I continued.
"Our magic is one of a kind, only other skeletons have our magic, so we can only go with other skeletons!"
She looked at me with her big eyes, that seemed to always sparkle, or maybe I'm just biased. She looked at me nodding as I spoke, trying to make it seem like she understood everything, but I knew she only understood a couple words, like magic and skeleton. But that's alright, I'm not annoyed or anything, I realize she's only tiny, and wouldn't understand such big words. I looked at her gently, and motioned to her coloring books.
"Do you wanna put those away and put your shoes on while I put your crayons away hun?"
She looked at her coloring books and nodded, putting her coloring books away, and went over to get her shoes. As she's doing that I crouch down and start to gather up all her crayons to put in the tub.I wonder how it is in the waiting room.
Meanwhile in the waiting room; 3rd person POV
Sitting in the waiting room was an old human man in a suit, two security guards, and three Skeletal monsters, two shorter and a tall one. The first short skeleton was in pretty simple clothing, a blue jacket that was open, a white t-shirt, black shorts with a white line going down them, and slippers. He was sitting in a chair with a relaxed smile and one eyed close, seemingly glowering at the human, making the human sweat nervously, as though he could feel his sins crawling on his back.
The second short skeleton was wearing something a bit nicer, it seemed to be a fancy bikers 'fit. He's wearing a deep royal purple shirt, with a leather jacket that had lilac highlights, dark purple, like nearly black, but you can still tell it's purple, tight jeans, a purple belt with a belt buckle with a star on it, dark purple leather bikers gloves, and calf high boots. He had scars going across his right 'eye', and his eyes seemed to have three triangles in a triforce pattern. He was pacing back and forth, stopping occasionally to tap his left foot.
The third Skeleton was sitting at a table, reading a book. He was wearing a dark purple jacket that had a lilac fluffy hoodie, a black shirt, purple gray ripped jeans, and black shoes with purple highlights. He was wearing a medical eye patch on his left eye. The human man spoke up.
"So, you folks local to California?"
All three skeletons turned their heads towards the human. The taller skeleton rolled his eyes and turned back to his book, the short skeleton's, who was smiling, and his smile seemed to get strained. The final skeleton who was pacing, stopped to talk to the human.
"NO ACTUALLY, WE'RE FROM EBOT CITY. ONCE WE HEARD OF THE SKELETON LIVING HERE IN ISOLATION, WE CAME TO RETRIEVE HER AS SOON AS WE WERE ABLE."
The humans in the room all looked at each other with a strange look on their face.
"Hmmm, alright."
The human said nothing after that. Soon after a bit of awkward silence, footsteps were heard from down the hall, to the skeletons surprise there was more than one pair of footsteps. The skeletons looked at each other, wondering if the skeleton inverto needed to be escorted, and if yes, why? The smaller skeleton who was sitting sat up with a strained smile, the taller one put the book away somewhere, and the pacing skeleton stopped to face the door. The door opened, with the two skeletons tensing, and the standing skeleton standing up straight in a military-like stance, perhaps to be intimidating.
Ayla walked in with the duffel over her left shoulder, and held Mary's hand. She stopped noticing the three skeletons, and noticing the tense look on two of them, both of whom looked ready to pounce. Mary noticed the feeling in the air, and hid behind Ayla, whimpering in a scared way. Snapping out of his surprise, the skeleton left the position he was standing in, and walked over to them in a more casual, calm way, perhaps to try to calm down the young one.
He stopped a foot in front of Ayla, and put out his hand to her to shake, Ayla took it as he started to speak,
"HELLO, I AM BLACKBERRY, YOU MAY CALL ME BLACK FOR SHORT. IT IS A PLEASURE TO FINALLY MEET YOU, DEAR."
Ayla blinked and put her hand to her side when he let go,
"Uh, yeah same dude, name's Ayla."
Black nodded, then looked down towards Mary, who was still hiding behind Ayla’s leg. He bent down slightly and smiled gently.
"AND WHO MIGHT YOU BE?"
Mary stared at him, being shy, until Ayla gently put her hand on Mary's back, not pushing her but just being reassuring.
"Go on then chickadee, tell the nice dude your name."
Mary stepped out slightly to see the skeleton man more clearly
"I-I'm Mary."
Blackberry nodded.
"MARY HMM? A PRETTY NAME FOR A VERY PRETTY GIRL."
Black made no comment on the cracks and breaks across Mary's face, but Ayla could tell he noticed with the way his eye light was moving across Mary's face. Mary's eye light's brightened and she smiled, and fully got out from behind Ayla’s legs, and stood in front of them instead. Blackberry took Mary's hand, slightly pressed his teeth against Mary's very tiny, slightly malnourished, skeletal hand. He looked at Mary,
"WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE A MAGIC TRICK, DEARIE?"
Mary gasped, her eye lights forming as literal stars, and she nodded. Blackberry patted his jacket pockets, and frowned.
"HMMMMM.."
Mary looked at him and turned his head, like a curious puppy.
"wha' isth it?"
"WELL," he started "IT SEEMS I HAVE LOST, HMMM WAIT."
He looked up at Mary, stuck his hand behind her head, and pulled out a Twix bar.
"AHA THERE IT IS!"
Blackberry handed Mary the candy bar,
"FOR YOU MY DEAR."
Mary squealed, Mavors smiled and gently whispered,
"Mary say, 'thank you."
Mary nodded and gave Blackberry a hug
"Tank you."
Black's eyes widened, before his face softened and he gently hugged the small skeletal toddler back.
"YOU'RE WELCOME"
Ayla smiled at the adorable scene in front of her and looked towards the other two skeletons. The tall one is leaning against the entrance out of the main building, looking at Black and Mary, and the other short one seems to be having a very strained and awkward conversation with the old man in the suit. Ayla frowned. She never did like that guy. Not important enough to even remember his name.
Blackberry stood up and bowed slightly towards Ayla.
"MAY I TAKE YOUR BAG, AND THE BUCKET OF CRAYONS PLEASE."
Ayla hesitated, but handed him the bag,
"Uh, sure dude, thanks."
Black took the bag and put it over his shoulder, and held the crayon tub in his right hand. His brow bones scrunched up,
"THIS BAG SURE IS LIGHT, DO YOU NEED HELP GETTING THE REST OF YOUR THINGS?"
Ayla blinked "Oh no no no, this is all of our stuff."
Black frowned, "HMMMM I SEE."
Mary looked up at her big sister and loudly whispered ,
"Ayla can I hold hith hand pleathe?"
Ayla smiled as Black and the tall skeleton chuckled at Mary's adorableness.
"Mary, you'll have to ask him."
Mary shook her head, "I can't" she whined,
"And why not?" Ayla asked the silly toddler.
"I'm shy"
Ayla chuckled while shaking her head.
"May she hold your hand?"
She asked the shorter skeleton while nodding towards Mary. Black smiled and held out his hand towards Mary,
"M'lady."
Mary grabbed his hand and they both started to walk towards the door with the taller skeleton. As Ayla was walking behind them it seemed the other shorter skeleton was finally done with his conversation with the human, and after being handed a file with papers, most likely her and Mary's info papers and Mary's birth certificate. He walked next to Ayla, then looked up at her and held out his empty hand.
"heya bud, names comic."
Ayla smiled and shook his hand. As she touched his hand a fart like noise echoed through the room. Snickers were heard from the taller skeleton and Mary started to giggle. Ayla blushed a dark slate blue and looked at her hand. She looked up at Comic who was holding up his hand that had a whoopee cushion on it, with a shit-eating grin on his face.
"hehehe whoopee cushion trick, works every time."
Ayla smiled, "Hehe pretty cool dude."
Comic winked at her. "thanks."
Then the taller skeleton spoke up.
"Eh I hate to ruin the moment, but can we get out of here please, I got homework I gotta do, and a commission due in some hours."
Comic nodded, "you're right, let's get on the next ferry, before the water gets too bad."
Ayla nodded. "Lead the way please, me and Mary have never been out of this section."
Comic nodded and walked out the door with the rest following. After they left the building, got on the next Ferry, which luckily they only had to wait a few minutes for, and reached land, Black, who was still holding Mary's hand, led them to a black Cadillac Escalade.
Ayla whistled, "Damn fancy".
Black turned his face towards her with a smug grin on his face.
"THANK YOU."
He finally reached the car and dug for his keys with his free hand and unlocked the car. He then opened the door and lifted up Mary gently and set her in the car, then he seemed to stop to think.
"HMMMMM, IF I HAD KNOWN YOU WERE JOINING US, I WOULD HAVE STOPPED BY THE STORE REAL FAST TO GET YOU A CAR SEAT. AH WELL, WE CAN STOP BY A WALMART TO GET YOU SOMETHING, UNTIL THEN, AYLA CAN SHE SIT IN YOUR LAP?"
Mavors walked up to the car and nodded.
"Yeah sure I don't mind, also thanks!"
Black stared at Ayla while she got in the car, she was struggling slightly, so he lifted her slightly while asking her,
"WHATEVER ARE YOU THANKING ME FOR?"
Ayla looked at him while setting Mary in her lap,
"Well, cause you thought about getting her a car seat, you didn't have to but you did, and that's real cool."
Black gently smiled and closed the door, and then opened the drivers door and jumped in.
Comic jumped in the passenger seat, and the taller skeleton jumped in the back next to Mavors and Mary. Black started the car and backed out and started to drive back to Ebot.
"THE DRIVE FROM CALIFORNIA TO EBOT IS ABOUT 14 HOURS, BECAUSE EBOT IS IN CANADA, SO FEEL FREE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES FOR A BIT. ALSO, IF MARY GETS BORED, THERE'S A MINI THEATER IN THE BACK THERE AND SOME BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES. ALTHOUGH I'M NOT SURE I HAVE ANY CHILD APPROPRIATE SHOWS IN THE CAR, SO I WILL PICK THOSE UP AT THE NEXT WALMART AS WELL."
Ayla nodded, "Sounds good to me."
Black nodded back, and put all of his focus into driving. (Titan knows you need it in California traffic) Ayla closed her eyes, and the next time she opened her eyes, the car had stopped, it was sunset, and the bright lights of Walmart shined on her eye sockets. Black turned to her and proceeded to whisper,
"ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR SHE LIKES?"
Ayla blinked, the question processing slower due to her fatigue, she looked at the tall skeleton and Sans, and noticed they were both asleep, she then looked down at Mary and noticed she was curled up asleep too. Ayla answered in a hushed voice.
"Um, well she has a My Little Pony, Strawberry shortcake, Minnie Mouse, Hello Kitty and a children's anime coloring book, and she loves them to bits, so I'd say look for anything around those."
Black nodded, "ALRIGHT WELL, I'LL BE RIGHT BACK. IT'LL BE A QUICK IN AND OUT."
All of a sudden a hushed voice spoke up,
"Hehe, that's what she said."
Ayla looked next to her to see the tall skeleton up, but he looked like he was ready to go back to sleep, he was looking at Black with a tired smile on his face. Black rolled his eyes,
"OH SHUT UP MONEY."
He closed the door and Ayla watched as he walked to the entrance. She turned her head towards Money who spoke up,
"So what's yer name? I didn't catch it."
Ayla blinked, "Oh my name is Ayla."
Money nodded. “Nice."
The conversation seemed to stop there when Money started to nod off again, and then he fell back asleep. Ayla still felt tired and decided it wouldn't hurt to close her eyes till Blackberry came back. She felt herself being shaken gently awake. She opened her eye sockets to see Blackberry setting a bag full of DVDs on the car floor, and he looked at her ,
"MAY YOU STEP OUT FOR BUT A SECOND, I NEED TO SET UP THE CAR SEAT."
It was then Ayla noticed the singular cart with a car seat on it, but she was so tired, it was blurry and she didn't see what it was. She stepped out of the car, an asleep Mary in her arms, and he nodded at her. He then put the car seat she was sitting in down as gently as possible, so he could access the far back seat and not wake the other three passengers. He then used his magic to take the car seat out of the box, so they could be quicker about it. He then clicked in the car seat and he reached for Mary, who was still asleep in Ayla’s arms.
Ayla handed Mary to him, and he put a pillow that he bought for her on the car seat, and he set her down on the car seat. He clicked the seat belt on the car seat, and pulled out a blanket from the Walmart bag, and set it over her. He then got out of the car and put the seat back up. He turned towards Ayla and motioned his arms towards the car. She sat in the car, and Blackberry closed the door, got back into the car, and started it. As he started to drive out of Walmart, she then started to close her eyes, and fell back asleep. She had a good feeling about the future.
