Summary:

"Dad," Tobio started nervously, clutching his dampened school bag tightly, "Teach me... how to put up a wall."

His father placed a mug of steaming green tea on the woven bamboo place mat, fixing his son with a concerned look.

"Did you get rejected, Tobio?"

Tobio jerkily nodded his head, scrunching his nose in a futile attempt of keeping his tears at bay.

"Yeah," Tobio croaked, an unwelcomed sob ripping itself from his throat. A pair of strong arms wrapped around his shoulders, pulling his nose into a cotton t-shirt smelling of sandalwood and home.

"Tobio, look at me," his father spoke softly.

Two pairs of blue eyes met.

"Do you want to leave Japan?"

When Tobio grows older, he would realize that his father needed to leave Japan just as much as he, that neither of them could live in a soulmate barren land.

So with nothing left for them in Miyagi, he and his father packed their belongings, never looking back.

Notes:

I've read every IwaOiKage rejected soulmate au that AO3 has to offer, and since I'm severely blocked on my two KyouKage fics right now, I decided why not. I've had this idea in my notes app for about three months, so I'm excited to finally write it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Alright guys!” Ukai called out, clapping his hands together to get the attention on himself, “Gather ‘round.”

Each of the eleven boys on the Karasuno volleyball team sat in a semi-circle around their coach, mops and volleyballs left strewn about the gym to be cleaned up later.

“I’ve got word that tomorrow we're getting a transfer student from the United States, who has already sent in his application forms for the team.”

The club members nodded their heads in understanding.

“What’s his name?” Sugawara questioned, eyes shining in genuine curiosity.

“Kageyama Tobio.”

A contemplative silence wrapped itself around the gymnasium.

“... A Japanese name?” Tanaka murmured mostly to himself.

“Yup. From what I hear, he’s a Miyagi native, coming back to Japan after three years,” Ukai added, sensing his team’s confusion.

“Do we know anything about him- as a player I mean,” Yamaguchi asked lamely.

“A lot actually,” Ukai sighed, “He is a national level player, ranked second best high school setter in the United States.”

“What’s a player like that coming here for?” Tsukishima glowered, eyebrows scrunched in both disbelief and confusion.

“Beats me, just give him a warm Miyagi welcome tomorrow.”

“Yes Sir!”
