Work Text:
It was a beautiful day outside. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, it's on days like these, people like me, were watching over a certain skeleton. Papyrus and I had come to Muffets bakery to try out one of her newer baked goods, since he was the mascot for Monsters this made him a figurehead, which ultimately made him some what the representative for Monsters. this meant going to special events no matter how small. which is why we were at Muffets, because Papyrus insisted, and I quote "IT'S AT TIMES LIKE THESE THAT I NEED TO BE THERE FOR MONSTER BUSINESSES!" (His scarf waving valiantly). Which is nice, but I think it's because of his sweet tooth that he keeps denying he has.
"Sir, we're catching the eye of the public" I voiced concern.
"OF COURSE, I AM AFTER ALL, A VERY FAMOUS SKELETON," He looked to me, "YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO COME YOU KNOW."
"You know very well I did, sir," It was my job after all. I was his assistant, and he is my priority.
"ENOUGH WITH THE SIR, YOU KNOW YOU CAN CALL ME PAPYRUS" He stated. He let out a sigh, having know him a while he had at some point started to grow sick of the professionalism. I was his friend, and he couldn't see it any other way.
"I have to sir, we're in public" I stated back.
He pouted... I think. Can skeletons pout? Anyhow, I hadn't been expecting myself to end up with this kind of job, looking after someone, politics, human monster relations, non of this was my strong suit. I had ended up here because of my own volition. I volunteered after hearing that the monsters mascot needed an assistant to help him and pretty much everyone refused. I was naive. But I wouldn't change my decision regardless. I would help him represent monsters. Things were rough in the beginning but since then things had mellowed out. Being with Papyrus, watching him for so long, I had started to admire him, his strong will, his positive attitude, he really was, as he says, great.
"AT LEAST TRY SOME"
"But si-"
"TO LATE, MUFFET! CAN WE HAVE ANOTHER PLEASE?" The whole bakery practically shook, he was being very insistent about this. In truth I would of loved to take a break, sleep had been lacking recently. "YOU LOOK LIKE YOU NEED A BREAK," took the words right out my mouth.
"Thanks Pap... err sir," he huffed a nyeh like laugh. I swear, he was too 'sweet' for the world.
***
"SO?" He had a patient dog look. Adorable.
"I like it, you've outdone yourself Muffet, it's delicious!" I looked to Muffet who was by the till.
"Thank you dearie~ only the best for my favourite customers" She giggled.
Truthfully Papyrus had ended up becoming a regular, he would never admit it though. He can be stubborn at times. A sudden ring (Bonetrousle) emitted from Papyrus' pocket, "AH BROTHER!" His brother. I've never actually met him, but Papyrus talks about him a lot. He talks about how lazy he is and how he tortures him with puns, but there's no doubt he loves him. "YES IM WITH MY FRIEND AT THE MINUTE," it's crazy to think I've gone this long without never have met him. It always seemed to me that he was avoiding me. "OF COURSE I AM... WAIT, WAS THAT A PUN?!" But why would he avoid me? It seemed silly, and maybe I was just paranoid. Actually I think Papyrus spoke about other family members recently. "HM THAT IS A PROBLEM," though I don't recall him having any other family members other than his brother. "RIGHT NOW?" He made it seem like there were a lot. I wonder what it was like, to have so many family members. I was an only child and always seemed awkward around other existing family members that weren't my mother or father. Even around them I could never act quite right. "IT QUITE ALRIGHT, DO NOT FRET THE GREAT PAPYRUS SHALL HELP YOU," there was a beep noise, "I'M SORRY TO CUT THIS SHORT BUT I NEED TO ASSIST MY BROTHER WITH FAMILY MATTERS," he looked somewhat remorseful. I took sips of the last of my spider cyder.
"Y/N?"
"Hm, sorry?" It seemed I was spacing out.
"IM AFRAID I MUST LEAVE TO HELP MY BROTHER." I found myself feeling a little disappointed.
"Oh"
"IM VERY SORRY TO CUT OUR TIME TOGETHER SHORT," It seemed he was just as disappointed and more so if that sad expression had anything to say about it. A frown doesn't look good on him.
"It's alright, when greatness is called for right?" A small attempt to cheer him up.
"YES! I MUST NOT IGNORE THE CALL FOR GREATNESS!" Seemed like it worked, "AWAY I GO THEN!" I followed him out the bakery doors giving Muffet a quiet wave, she could only giggle at the scene. He took strides to his red convertible and standing next to it I couldn't help but think how well it suited him. They both seemed to have red knight like capes that flew with the wind? Oh, now they're gone. how does he do that?
"I SHALL DEPART! I WILL TEXT YOU SOME TIME LATER?" He opened his car door.
"Of course sir, after all we still need to go over your visit with the school." I smiled. He hated professionalism.
"OH MY GOD I THOUGH WE WENT OVER THIS!" I couldn't help but laugh. "I WILL SEE YOU LATER."
"See you later... Pap"
And he drove off with a screech of the tyres. Right, now to make my own journey home. Despite my position, I lived humbly, a small studio apartment that was decent money. I think a walk would be nice, the sun had started to set and the breeze felt nice. Besides it wasn't like I would attract any attention, not the kind Papyrus gets.

The car had come to a halt. Now to check what all the fuss was about.
"BROTHER, IM HERE!" The door slammed open. "SO WHAT HAPPENED THIS TIME? I WAS SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH MY FRIEND I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW." He looked across the room full of skeletons.
"By friend you mean that super hot chick that's always by ya side on tv?" Red didn't seem to care that Sans was glaring into his skull.
"SHE IS MY ASSISTANT," Red's grin grew.
"She could assist me with somethi-"
"I WOULD PREFER IF YOU NOT SPEAK ABOUT HER LIKE THAT RED," that comment seemed to irk him, he didn't like his friend being spoken about so vulgarly.
"Heh, sorry bro" Sans looked apologetic, "didn't mean to drag you away from your 'play date'" he winked... never mind. He wasn't sure if he was blushing, but his face defiantly felt warm.
"IF WE'RE QUITE FINISHED"
"YES, SORRY EDGE," Edge had started to explain his side of the story and after a certain point everyone started to butt in, leading to a full blown argument. Honestly this happened way too often. Papyrus had at some point zoned out hearing only words here and there, lasagne, broke, kitchen, tacos, swear jar, shit, ok I think he's heard enough. It was getting late and he had briefly wondered if y/n got home ok, he did leave rather abruptly so he never gave her a lift home. He got out his phone.
////////
(18:44) DID YOU GET HOME OK?
MISS Y/N, (18:45) Yes thank you, is everything at home ok?
(18:45) SAME THING AS ALWAYS IM AFRAID, THEY ARGUE LIKE A GROUP OF BARKING DOGS.
MISS Y/N, (18:45) That sounds tiring to deal with, would you prefer to talk about the school visit tomorrow morning?
(18:46) YES THAT WOULD BE PREFERABLE. AGAIN I APOLOGISE FOR LEAVING SO ABRUPTLY.
MISS Y/N (18:46) It's ok Papyrus really, you don't have to keep apologising.
(18:46) IF YOU'RE SURE.

"You texting your girlfriend?"
"SHE IS MY ASSISTANT AND FRIEND!" Red was too nosey for his own good. Papyrus was pretty sure his face was orange.
"Sure man"
"CAN WE MEET HER?" Blue's eye lights seemed to sparkle.
"HM, I HADN'T CONCIDERED," Papyrus was mulling it over, it was a surprise they had gone this long without never having met any of his... relatives. "I SUPPOSE?" He seemed unsure.
"Y/n huh," Red managed to swipe his phone from him and was now reading they're text messages.
"RED! THATS INCREDIBALY RUDE!" It had only just occurred to him that the arguing had stopped at some point and all attention was now on him. He snatched his phone back.
"IS Y/N HER NAME? I LIKE IT" Blue looked too excited, to the point he looked as if he was vibrating. Everyone else seemed just as curious though some being stubborn about it. Though he had spoken about her before he had never mentioned her name.
"WHAT IS SHE LIKE?" Willow timidly approached the conversation. And Papyrus could only smile brightly at the question.
He took a moment to look down at his phone fondly, he saw that she had texted while he was distracted, wishing him a goodnight. With no lack of a sir in there, honestly. He didn't quite realise how much it effected him until it was too late. She is certainly a resilient one, liked to grind his gears too. Such cheek! But it made her no less the lovelier. The first time he met her, he knew, and there was no way those eyes could lie, after all, eyes were windows to the soul even with her glasses. He rarely saw them off. He found it cute when her glasses would slide down the bridge of her nose then having to adjust them constantly. He bet, that if he ever saw her soul, he bet his scarf that it would look just gorgeous. Just her.
"Hey bro you ok?" Oh, he spaced out. Everyone looked to him with questionable gaze. He could only sum her up in one word.
"Y/N IS NOTHING BUT TRUE."
