Work Text:
It’s dark, a navy blue sheet spreading right across the night sky, slowly fading into black as it succumbs to the lateness. The moon is bright though, bright and beautiful and its light is shining right on through the window. By now, Ben would’ve been moaning and groaning about the streetlights and how their obnoxious glare is playing havoc with his glasses, with orange lines all he can see. Usually by now, the curtains would be shut for the night, only to be opened again come the morning. But right now, he doesn’t have it in him to care. All he’s thinking about is the man half laying next to him, and how he can’t wait to marry him.
Ben’s got a notebook in front of him, the pages curling in on itself in the corners from how it's sloppily been stored. On the page is a list, written in both his and Callum’s handwritings and somehow they just fit together perfectly, with Ben’s loops and Callum’s circles on the top of his I’s. There’s lines striking right through some words, indicating that those things have been booked or sorted out. Others though, remain perfectly clear to read.
Callum’s half laying in the bed, half sitting up against the pillows. It’s probably an uncomfortable position, but he hasn’t moved for a while now. His laptop is against his stomach, the screen angled down towards him, though Ben can make out what he’s looking at.
“Do we need anything for the tables?” Callum asks. “Like flowers or something?”
Ben shrugs, though there’s something about planning their wedding that warms his heart, making it all fuzzy and light. He thinks for a moment, and then a smile grows. “Roses?” He enquires. “Because of the proposal.”
A blush falls across Callum’s cheeks, as bright as the roses he remembers, and Ben almost has his breath taken away when he sees how gorgeous Callum looks, blushing in the moonlight.
“Yeah.” Callum breathes out. “That sounds perfect. A rose for every table.”
Ben makes a note, scribbling down a few words onto the end of the list.
Callum watches over him, rubbing his hand to his eyes, exhaustion taking over him. They’ve been like this for hours now, planning everything to perfection and as much as he loves doing this, he’s also aware that he needs to sleep. “What’s next on the list?” He asks, stretching out his body.
Ben taps against the notebook. “Rings.” He reads out, looking back up at Callum. “Any idea?”
A soft smile forms across Callum’s mouth and he bites at his bottom lip in an attempt to disguise the smile, though it’s in vain.
“What?” Ben chuckles, though it’s in confusion.
Callum shakes his head softly. “I’ve been looking at some.” He says, tapping a website into his laptop. “You don’t have to agree to them, I just saw them one day when I was looking and I thought I could see us wearing them.”
There’s a silence that grows between them for a few seconds, just whilst the webpage loads up. Ben moves slightly, resting his head against Callum’s shoulder. It makes his glasses uncomfortable, digging into the bridge of his nose, but he pushes through that annoyance because Callum’s warm and smells comforting.
Callum shifts the laptop closer to Ben, angling it so he can see the screen properly. The ring appears on screen, modelled on a hand. It’s silver, just a simple band, though there’s two different textures on it. Ben looks at it, flicking through the four different pictures and back again.
“You don’t have to choose them.” Callum says. “We can go to the jewellers to find some. A-and they don’t even have to be matching, not if you don’t want.” His words come out in a jumble, his nerves showing.
Ben tilts his head slightly. “Cal.” He breathes out. “Shut up. I love them. I can see both of us wearing them.”
“Yeah?” Callum grins.
Ben’s hand rests against Callum’s chest, his thumb rubbing warmly at his skin. “Yeah.” He breathes out in response.
Callum leans his head to the side, resting it on top of Ben’s for a second or two, and when he pulls away, he breaks his movement just so that he can press a gentle kiss to Ben’s hairline. He reads the page, though he could probably recite it by now with how much he’s found himself looking at the rings over these last few weeks. “It says here that they can be engraved with anything.” He says.
“We could get the date of the wedding on.” Ben smiles, nudging Callum’s hand out of the way to scroll down the page himself. “Or the date we had our first kiss. Anything.”
Callum shrugs. “We’ll always remember those though. Even if you’re bad at remembering dates.”
Ben rolls his eyes because it’s a thing now, where Callum teases him about how bad Ben is at remembering important dates. He yawns, shutting the notepad and putting it on his bedside table, resting the pen on top of it carefully. “What about names?” He asks, mid way through a long yawn. “I get your name engraved, and you get mine.”
“Could do.” Callum says, and he yawns too, rubbing his hand over his face.
Ben climbs out of the bed, padding over to the window and closing the curtains without a second thought. “We can go to order them tomorrow.” He says. “We need to go to that part of town to pick up the ties anyway.” He pushes the laptop shut and puts it on Callum’s bedside table.
Callum stretches out his arms, smiling as Ben falls right into place, fitting perfectly inside of Callum’s embrace. “Sounds good to me.” Callum says. “We can try and find a florist too. For the buttonholes and the roses now.”
Ben hums softly, entwining his fingers with Callum’s.
“I can’t wait, babe.” Callum whispers out, shuffling to get comfortable, ready to settle down for the night. “You and me, together forever. It’s all I’ve ever dreamt of.”
A smile forms on Ben’s lips at Callum’s words and he knows exactly what he wants to get engraved on the rings then. He presses a gentle kiss to Callum’s knuckles, hitting right where the ring would go. “Together forever.” He breathes out.
Together forever.
