The One Certainty Amidst A Thousand Doubts

Summary:

She didn’t remember when she started to love him.

Was it when she saw his gentle smile for the first time, consciously falling for amber eyes that resembled a golden abyss? Was it when he rushed to see her as soon as he caught word of her catching a cold? Was it when he stood in the middle of her and the army that once followed his every whim—declaring a promise to protect her even if the entire world became his enemy?

Or maybe it was from the very start—written in the stars of London and Cradle; finally connecting when their worlds collided.

Chapter Text

     A tap on the nose.

It was gentle, feather-like. His finger traced the shape of her nose, careful not to disturb her peaceful sleep. His beloved slept soundly in his arms—her breathing, slow and light.

He brushed a curious dot of brown skin on her cheek, curiosity piqued. He noticed the same little birthmarks on her arms when he held her hand on walks, but never did he notice the little speckles on her face.

He brought his face closer to hers, sharp amber eyes concentrating in the dark. Little marks spread across her face, her neck, her shoulders—but they truly shone on her arms. She resembled a night sky, one that sparkled with thousands of stars.

A curious hand hovered over her right arm—a delicate finger tracing the little dots. If she was awake, she’d glare at him, complain that it tickled, and he’d feel himself fall in love all over again. Jonah smiled at the thought. He continued his exploration with the gentlest of smiles on his beautiful face, a sight that was reserved for her if she chose to wake at this hour. His finger traced the marks on her forearm, stopping at her elbow.

     A constellation , he thought.

Her body was full of little stars that formed constellations. He felt like an astrologer who had caught the first glimpse of the sky on the tallest mountain, speechless at the sheer beauty that chose to show itself to him. He thought he couldn’t discover more reasons to fall for her, but she had proved him wrong again and again.

Jonah, however, wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Carefully, he tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, and pressed his lips against a birthmark that rested just above her cheekbone. His lips spread into a grin as she wrinkled her nose and slowly opened her drowsy eyes.

“Mmm…” with a groggy voice full of sleep, she asked: “What is it Jonah?”

“Nothing, darling. Go back to sleep,” he whispered, lifting her forearm and kissing the mark he traced earlier. He then tilted his head and placed another kiss on a different mark. He traced her soft skin and left warm kisses as he went—his love manifesting in the form of light pecks.

Still too dazed to process what was happening, his girlfriend squinted her eyes and stared at her partner.

“Uh huh, so what are you doing there?”

“Tracing the stars,” he replied, his breath tickling her soft skin. The brief contact of warm air on her arm had spread throughout her body, immediately warming her up amidst the chill of night. Each kiss woke her up a little better, like a cup of caffeine in the morning.

Jonah watched her reactions from the corner of his eye, careful not to cross a boundary; “You can tell me to stop at any time.”

“What if I don’t want you to?” She teased in response, now slightly awake.

Jonah shifted his attention from her arm to her face, nuzzling the little nose he found so adorable. He allowed himself to laugh lightly as he taunted back:

     “Let’s find out, shall we?”
