cat got your tongue

Summary:

As a cat hybrid, Jimin is scared of many things. He’s scared of the vrooming machine humans call vacuum cleaner, he’s scared of cars, he’s scared of people stepping on his tail. But mostly, he’s scared of the large bunny who keeps following him around and trying to sniff him.

Work Text:

All in all, Jimin has adapted rather well to the hybrid life. He’s had to learn how to get by since he was a child, after all, when his mother had told him that she wouldn’t always be there to shelter him and therefore, he needed to figure out how to make room for himself in this fast-paced world where people constantly look down on each other, overpriced cup of coffee in one hand and macbook sleeve in the other.

Being himself is a daily battle that Jimin has had no choice but to accept. And now, despite the occasional belittling stare he gets on the street, he can honestly say that he's proud of who he is. He’s proud of the two fluffy ears that stick out from his mop of messy blonde hair; they are soft to the touch, and they help him avoid all sorts of danger while he’s out and about in the city. He’s proud of the long tail that curls behind his back; he knows that the black, brown and white spots that adorn it make him look even prettier, and nothing compares to the feeling of being petted right at the base. He’s proud of his reflexes, of his sharp vision, of the way he’s able to sense when something is about to go wrong.

Even if he had the choice, Jimin wouldn’t want to become a human. He’s perfectly happy with the way things are, and at least, being a cat hybrid means that he gets the best treats in the household, especially because he knows that he’s got his owner, Yoongi, wrapped around his little finger. Well, little paw, so to speak.

There is one fateful day, however, that ends up jeopardizing Jimin’s entire philosophy of life.

He’s lying on the couch, the leathery one that Yoongi always claims is extremely expensive, meaning no one but him should technically be allowed to sit there. Except Jimin is Jimin, and Jimin gets to do whatever he wants in the house. So he’s lying there – licking his paws clean, purring quietly for no particular reason other than how comfortable and relaxed he’s feeling, when he hears the rustle of keys coming from the front door, which opens a second later.

Yoongi comes in, face practically drowning in the huge scarf he’d wrapped around his neck this morning.

This isn’t what surprises Jimin, though. What surprises him is the smell that Yoongi is carrying with him – there’s his usual scent, of course, pine and slightly citrusy, but it’s not quite the same as every other day. There’s something else here, something… animal.

Jimin frowns. He knows that Yoongi sometimes likes to go to one of those dog cafés in the center of the city, but he’d been so busy with work lately, there’s no way he could’ve found the time to go.

All sorts of thoughts suddenly invade Jimin’s mind, and he feels his heartrate pick up.

Yoongi couldn't have brought another cat home, right? Oh please, not this. Jimin had told him time and time again - he’s all for emptying the shelters, but there isn’t enough room on Yoongi’s lap for two cats, and Jimin needs his evening petting session, otherwise he can’t fall asleep. Getting another cat is out of the question, and Yoongi had promised never to take such an important decision without consulting him first.

Jimin is genuinely confused.

He looks at Yoongi, then makes the mistake of letting his gaze trail further down, all the way to his feet, where a cage is resting, carefully placed on the ground. Jimin swears he hears movement, a small squeak followed by a string of curious sniffles. He sees the twitch of an ear, and he squints his eyes – too big to belong to another cat, he thinks to himself.

His claws dig into the couch, and he knows that Yoongi will chastise him later about leaving marks, but he doesn’t care. Whatever’s inside that cage has just moved again, and Jimin needs to be ready to defend himself. Another minute passes, and then the creature takes a few steps forward, effectively walking into the light. Jimin’s eyes widen.

It’s a bunny.

He immediately hisses, back going taut, tail pulled straight up and hair rising all the way to his neck.

A bunny. Yoongi has brought home a bunny. Is he out of his mind?! Jimin thinks.

The thing looks at him with wide, scared eyes, and Jimin lets out another menacing hiss.

“Jimin, stop.” Yoongi’s voice is serious and commanding, a tone he doesn’t use often. Jimin grumbles under his breath, sparing Yoongi a glance, and when he sees that his owner is really not joking, he settles back down on the couch, mindful to keep an eye on the bunny’s every movement. He’s never really interacted with one of those before, but he knows better than to trust another hybrid blindly.

He turns an accusing glare towards Yoongi, who just sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Look, I know. But I had no other choice, alright? Hoseok is going on a four-day vacation, and he’s asked me to watch him. What was I supposed to tell him? I’m trying to get him to date me, remember?”

Jimin huffs. Humans and their ridiculous crush business. He doesn’t mind romance, as long as it doesn’t interfere with his nightly pets. And by the looks of it, it’s exactly what’s about to happen.

He ends up sulking all evening, acting haughty and disinterested even when Yoongi proposes to share some of the roasted chicken he’d brought home. Usually, Jimin can’t resist the tempting smell, but this time, it’s different. There is an unwanted bunny in the house, and that’s enough to cut his appetite.

Jimin keeps sending the creature hard glares from his spot on the couch. After the fourth time, Yoongi stops trying to berate him, shrugging and going back to his food.

The bunny is currently munching on some lettuce, next to Yoongi who’s sat on the floor. When he feels Jimin’s gaze on him, his head tilts up curiously, only to whimper at the menacing expression on Jimin’s face.

It’s not enough to deter Jimin, though – he knows what the bunny’s doing. He’s trying to make Jimin’s resolve crack by making use of his cuteness, but there is no way that it’s going to work. First of all, he’s not that cute, Jimin thinks with a disgruntled huff. And second of all, Jimin is way cuter.

In the end, he decides to leave the living room. If he’s going to have to share what is supposed to be his territory, might as well make it clear to this intruder that showing up uninvited has its consequences.

Jimin struts towards the kitchen, not sparing the duo a second look. He can hear Yoongi’s exasperated sigh in the distance, but pays it no mind – he knows that his owner is too whipped to stay angry for long, anyway. That’s why he always forgives Jimin for stealing ham off his plate.

As he approaches the corner of the kitchen where his dish is located, Jimin hears a strange tap tap tap sound that makes him stop in his tracks. His ears twitch, identifying the noise as coming from behind him. He turns around sharply and can't help but jump a bit in surprise when he realizes that this oversized bunny is actually following him. Not only is he stealing all of Jimin’s living space, he’s apparently also decided to threaten his safety.

“What do you want,” Jimin hisses, tone menacing as he assesses the rabbit’s size. He is indeed a lot bigger, but Jimin is quick, and if it comes down to that, he’s pretty sure he’d be able to win in a fight.

The bunny doesn’t respond. His big, round eyes never leave Jimin’s face, and his nose twitches occasionally. He takes one tentative step forward, then another when he sees that Jimin isn’t cowering back.

Stop,” Jimin says, but the bunny doesn’t listen – of course he doesn’t, why would he? – and hops even closer.

Jimin is at a complete loss. It’s not until he focuses on the bunny’s nose that he understands – the thing is sniffing him. Or at least, trying to.

Immediately, Jimin jumps back, baring his teeth in what he hopes is enough to deter the other hybrid. He knows that he’s not the scariest kitten out there, even prides himself in looking so soft and adorable, but right now, he really wishes that bunny would just bugger off.

“What the hell are you doing?! Stop sniffing me, you little-” He tries to move away, but his back comes in contact with the counter, and there’s no space left for him to escape. The persistent bunny buries his face in Jimin’s neck, sniffing and kneading at his soft fur with his paws.

Jimin squeaks and freezes. Out of fear, he shuts his eyes. If that thing is planning on hurting him, he’d rather not see it happen. Bearing it will be hard enough already.

He’s excepting pain, whether from a bite or mean scratches or whatever it is that bunnies do to attack others, but nothing comes.

The bunny keeps sniffing him and rubbing his face all over Jimin’s fur, and when he hears the sound of footsteps coming closer, Jimin finally opens his eyes to be met with the sight of a laughing Yoongi, his cheeks still puffy with food. “He really likes you, huh,” his owner muses, promptly taking his phone out of his pocket to record the uncanny scene. He looks entirely too amused by what is happening.

Jimin grunts and stomps his paws to show his annoyance.

If there’s nothing he can do about this terrible situation, let it at least be known that he is not enjoying any part of it.

The bunny refuses to leave his side.

It’s been three days, and he’s still clinging to him to the point where Jimin has trouble walking from one place to another.

He’s learned that the bunny is named Jungkook, that he’s two years younger than him and that he enjoys strawberries the best. That’s all he’s been able to get out of him – Jungkook, despite being overly affectionate, is not very talkative.

Despite his initial reluctance, Jimin has gotten strangely used to the feeling of having another warm ball of fur stuck to him at all times, just like he gets used to all things. With deep, irritated sighs leaving his mouth every five seconds or so, but still. He was wary at first, even going as far as to show his claws, but trying to shy away from the bunny is a tiring task – after many, many failed tries, he's come to the conclusion that it's actually rather pointless. Jungkook will only whine and lower his ears in a way that looks so genuinely sad that Jimin always ends up caving in.

And he’ll admit that the cuddles do feel a bit nice, especially when Yoongi is working late shifts and therefore comes home too tired to give Jimin the thorough petting that he deserves.

Jungkook is all too happy to take on that responsibility, licking the back of Jimin’s ears with earnest, that one particular spot that feels so, so good and that Jimin can never reach on his own.

He purrs contentedly as Jungkook nudges and nips at him, and every once in a while, they’ll switch roles, Jimin being the one to groom the big bunny who’s always dirty from hopping around the house too much.

Yoongi comes home one night to find Jimin and Jungkook all tangled with each other, sleeping soundly on the couch (the leather couch, he notes with a hint of irritation, but the scene is so endearing that he doesn’t even manage to get mad).

Jimin is purring in his sleep, something he only ever does when he’s feeling particularly comfy.

Yoongi snaps yet another picture of the two, and searches for Hoseok’s name in his contacts.

i think they’re getting along

He’s in the process of reheating some leftovers from last night when his phone pings with a new notification. Jungkook jumps slightly at the sound, but doesn’t really wake up, instead cuddling closer to Jimin with a happy little sigh. Yoongi smiles at the sight the two of them make, and looks back down at his phone.

Yoongi’s eyes widen at the exact same moment a loud screech resonates from the living room.

Are you mad?! Stop rubbing yourself against me you little- Jungkook!”
