Life Lessons on How to Love Your Rival

Summary:

They ate in silence but it wasn’t awkward. Bakugou slipped the bottom section of his bento back to him when he was done and walked off with a lazy wave, not once looking back.

“Later loser!”

Shouto waved to his retreating form and then stopped himself. In their untimely race to confess to Izuku, Shouto forgot what had initially made him so curious about Bakugou in the first place. Despite all his fire and crassness, Bakugou had always been someone he surprisingly had an easy time talking to.

Shouto Todoroki falls for his boyfriend's boyfriend with these life lessons.

What am I doing writing for BNHA? Why do I already have four chapters for this when I have another story to finish? How did I end up in Todobakudeku hell? Send help. But enjoy reading this before doing so! Not beta'd.

UPDATE for September 21, 2018: If you are an anime only viewer, proceed with caution. There be spoilers here.

Also, this was written before the personalities and ages of some of the Todoroki family were cemented. I have updated the story with their canon names, but they will appear out of character and their ages will probably be incorrect.

Chapter Text

It was around twenty past eight that Shouto finally walked into the lounge room. Momo, who had been filling out crossword puzzles with vacant eyes, lit up and instantly got out her seat upon his arrival. There were only three other students in the brightly lit room: a couple much too involved with each other and studying and one more curled in the couch, sleeping. Whatever Shouto had to say wouldn’t be heard.

The young man didn’t look troubled. In fact, he was relatively calm. He gave her a nod, the corner of his mouth curving to appease any apprehension she may have had. “Take a seat Momo. Everything is fine.” She slowly began to lower herself in her chair, a hand on her chest. “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.” He took a seat in the chair opposite to her, regarded her busy work with a brief glance before looking to her again. “We came to a decision.”

Yaoyorozu reached up to nervously twirl a strand of hair on her finger. “You don’t look devastated. So I’m guessing in the end, Midoriya chose you?” Shouto lightly smiled but shook his head.

“Yes, and no.”

“What do you mean?”

Shouto’s smile disappeared, looking very grave. “Izuku asked if he could date both of us. And I consented.”

The young woman let go of her hair, placing her hands on the table and straightening her back in an unpleasant shock. “You can’t be serious?”

“Very,” Shouto nodded again, folding his hands together on the table. “But it’s okay, really.  There couldn’t have been a better decision. Bakugou is an important part of Izuku’s life. There’s a messy past, yes. But they’ve grown up together, grown so much as individuals by being together. Bakugou is an essential part of what makes Izuku the person he is today. To ask him to forsake Bakugou for an exclusive relationship with me wouldn’t be a relationship I want.”

“So, you want this…” Momo said quietly, putting a hand under her chin. “It seems you’ve put a lot of thought into the matter. Before Midoriya even propositioned.”

“I’ve been thinking about this since Bakugou and I both confessed,” Shouto explained, lowering his eyes to the table. He’d since started playing with the corner of Momo’s paper crossword. He was bashful confessing all his inner thoughts like this but this was Momo, who had practically become his best friend since their first year here, so he could do it for her. “As soon as he made clear that he was going to be honest with his feelings for Izuku, I knew deep down that Izuku would never part with him. If I’m to be honest, I thought Bakugou would have been chosen tonight.”

Momo took his hands into her, eyes sincere. “That’s your insecurities talking. You don’t see how you are with Midoriya. But I do. Everyone else does. Even when you didn’t make your feelings known, we could all tell how much you two adore each other.”

“I really do adore him,” Shouto said with a soft smile, his cheeks getting warm. “I think I fell more in love when he told us that if neither of us was okay with his request, he wouldn’t date either. It wouldn’t be fair to us knowing he was pining for the other still. But Izuku is so kind and loving, it makes sense why he has room in his heart for two people. And I’ll accept anything and everything about him.”

“Even Bakugou?”

“Even Bakugou.”

“Well, I’m glad this is all mutual,” Momo said looking up to the ceiling and closing her eyes with a relieved sigh. It had been a very drama filled week and she was glad she was seeing the end of this life’s event chapter. “It is mutual, right? At least, for our fiery class mate?”

Shouto chuckled, lightly squeezing her hands. “For the most part. There was a lot of grumbling but he agreed, and promised that he’d learn to get along with me.”

“That’s a start. Though, being friends with him…that may be…”

“Fucking difficult.”

“Yeah, that’s exactly what I was going to say!” Momo shook with a hearty laugh and they shared grins, hands still clasped. They continued to talk into the night, about love, statistics class, and figuring out what ten letter word meant favorable.

In the morning, with rising sun peeking through, Shouto walked in classroom 1-A, with his heart already beating fast. He had texted him good night but nothing could compare to the quick turn of his head, the gleam of his bright eyes and the wide smile that blossomed across his face. The sun’s rays glowed around him, as if he had descended from heaven itself. Todoroki really had come to think of Midoriya Izuku as his personal angel. The young man with his bushy green hair and peppered freckles, called to him with glistening eyes.

“Good morning Shou!”

Shouto felt his knees go weak and he tripped over his feet as he briskly walked over to his new boyfriend. Boyfriend. His boyfriend. It didn’t matter that he had to share him with Bakugou of all people. All that mattered was that he finally, after two years of whishing he could, got to lean down in front of the smaller boy and give him a peck on the lips. Izuku squeaked in surprise and Ashido and Hagakure gasped in delight. Shouto hoped his face wasn’t too red as he pulled away. “Good morning to you too Izu.”

“Izu?” the seated boy asked, looking up at him with those round curious eyes. “Is that my new nick name?”

“It is if you want it to be…” Shouto muttered training his eyes to stay on him and ignore his two female classmates running out the room. Probably to announce to everyone the good news.

“I do!” Midoriya cheered, eyes crinkling shut with a blinding open smile. Dear Kami sama above, he loved this boy. He couldn’t help but sneak one last kiss and this time, Izuku didn’t squeak, only leaned in closer.

“YES! I WON! I WON THE BET!”

The two tore apart, startled to see Mineta jumping and fist pumping about the classroom. In the door way stood Ashido and Hagakure again with a few other classmates behind them. This small group included Iida, who was furiously nodding his head in approval and Uraraka, grinning with a thumbs up. Mineta shortly stopped, ripping up a piece of loose leaf paper, and then throwing it up in the air around them like confetti. Izuku turned beet red, and waved his hand in gesture to please stop. Todoroki tried to make his face as stoic as possible but it was starting to get annoying how big of a deal this was turning out to be.

“Congratulations turtle doves~” Mineta sang, face shining in euphoria. “I knew I could count on Izuku to make the right decision and make my pockets bigger. Sero, I need you to pay up!” Sero crossed his arms in a huff, passing by the small crowd to come into the classroom. “No way. I told you it would be wrong to bet on them.”

“Extremely wrong,” Shouto added in for good measure with a mean glare at Mineta. The small boy nervously laughed, rubbing the back of his head. “I only did it out of good faith. You’ve been in love since freshman year so of course I had to bet on you.”

“No, you really did not,” Izuku objected, face still pink from embarrassment. His friends had since joined him at his desk and Urakura cradled his head in her arms. Iida meanwhile was firmly patting Shouto on the back. Shouto couldn’t help but wince by the fourth to fifth pat.

“I only brought up bets because if  I did want to bet on Midoriya getting with anyone in our class,” Sero went on to say, placing his back pack behind his seat. “I would have bet on Bakugou. It was all hypothetical!”

“But you were wrong my ill betting friend,” Mineta said with a conniving smirk, inching closer to Sero with his hand held out. “Come on now. I know you at least have 600 yen on you.”

“That’s for my lunch!”

“Losers must starve for their sins.”

“I’m not giving you jack, asshole!”

Suddenly the door burst open and after being in the same class with him all three years at this boarding school, they easily guessed who it was. Bakugou stood in front of the door way, hands shoved in his pockets and his left foot hanging in the air. Behind him stood Kirishima, Kaminari, and Jirou.

“Minoru, are you begging Hanta for money again?” Kirishima asked as the four filed into the classroom. “We’re already in our senior year of high school. You and I both the know the manly thing to do would be to put away childish antics. Such as getting a job for cash and excelling at it!” The red head had stood in front of his audience, with a fist to his chest and his eyes scanning the imaginary horizon towards his ideal of manhood. Mineta picked at his nose, then yawned.

“Yeah, yeah. I won a bet and I want my money. It’s my right to have it, as a man.”

“And it’s my right as a man to tell you once more, there was no actual bet!”

Shouto had tuned out this squabbling a while ago and immediately forgot its existence with the arrival of Bakugou. He watched him without blinking, his eyes following the bristled young man to his desk. Freshman year, it had been in front of Izuku but now it was near the back of the class, on the other side. Bakugou didn’t so much as acknowledge him or Izuku, choosing to fiddle with his book bag and talk smack with Kaminari. When Shouto turned to look at his boyfriend, he was definitely looking at Bakugou as well. Urakura took turns looking at all three of them with an eyebrow raised. So Izuku probably brought her up to speed on the current situation already.

“Midoriya! Congrats by the way!” Kirishima cut in his thoughts, leaving the bickering two he had been lecturing to their devices. “I’m so glad to see how far you two have come. You and I both know what a handful Bakugou can be but he’s crazy about you and I know he’ll be loyal till the end!” Ashido, who had been sitting nearest to the Izuku scrunched up her face in confusion. Hagakure who was standing by her desk must have been making a similar face too but she was invisible so of course no one could see it.

“Bakugou and Midoriya? He’s dating Todoroki!” the unseen girl piped up. Ashido nodded her head, certain. “They just made it official this morning.”

“Well um,” Izuku began, roughly grabbing the ends of his hair. “About that…”

“You don’t have to explain yourself Izuku-kun,” Iida told him but Izuku shook his head in disagreement. “No, I should. It’ll save everyone the confusion.”

“They can figure it out their fucking selves,” a loud snarl was heard right near Shouto’s ears. His turbulent home life had trained him to not jump when surprised but he was certainly taken aback by Bakugou’s sudden presence.  He still had his signature scowl on his face, with his harsh eyebrows and spiky blond hair. But his back was straight and he was looking at Izuku and Izuku only.

“Kacchan, I just-”

“Just nothing. You don’t owe anyone anything.” As Bakugou talked, he drew closer until he was right in front of Midoriya. There was something that told Uraraku to let go of his head as Bakugou drew nearer and she did. Which was good because the angry blond yanked him by his shirt, pulled him up and smashed his lips onto his. There were more gasps from the classroom, Mineta’s mouth hanging from his hinges and the quiet Koda, who had yet to say anything this entire time, covering his eyes with his hands. The kiss seemed to last for an eternity for Shouto but eventually, Bakugou pulled away, with an intense yet less harsh expression pointed towards their shared boyfriend.

“You don’t owe anyone shit, except me,” he commanded and Izuku looked up back at him, meek yet devoted to his word. “Kacchan…”

“Well, you owe this asshole too, I guess,” Bakugou said, grunting towards Shouto with a head jerk. “But I could give less of a shit what goes on between you two. When it’s just you and me, it’s just you and me. Got it?”

“A-Alright then.”

Jirou peeked over Bakugou’s shoulder, letting out an impressed whistle.

“That was a hella a twist if I’ve ever seen one,” she concluded for the everyone who hadn’t known. Sero let out a laugh, dug in his pocket and gave Mineta one single yen. The small teen, still shell shocked from the turn of events, looked up at him, puzzled. “What is this for?”

“A pity coin for the loser.”

Mineta chucked the money back at him but Kirishima caught it in time before it fell into a black corner of the classroom, never to be seen again.

Eventually, their other class mates came in from breakfast and buzz around the trio filled the room very fast. Izuku tried to calm his nerves by leafing through a random text book which Iida had to turn right side up for him. Bakugou choose to sit on Izuku’s desk and while he didn’t say much, he gave a nasty glare to anyone who looked their way for too long. For some reason, Shouto found himself sitting on the other half of Izuku’s desk as well and briefly smiled when he met eyes with Momo not too far off. She observed the scene with a giggle behind her hand. It was a little funny having two unsmiling young men, blocking anyone from seeing the person sitting at said desk.

The two returned to their seats when Aizawa sensei came in for home room but Shouto’ s chest began to squeeze as the lesson went on. He took a quick glimpse at Izuku, who still has slightly red in the face and then craned his head as subtly as one could, to check Bakugou. He was actually paying attention until he realized he was being watched and gave him a nettled stare. With that, Shouto immediately took his heterochromia eyes off him, heart pattering at being caught and paid close attention to the lesson.
