Work Text:

Jolyne was coming up on her 5th birthday when Kakyoin first saw her use Stone Free.

Kakyoin was walking back into the kitchen after taking the garbage out and he slapped his hand over his mouth to muffle a scream as he stopped in the archway, his eyes wide. There was his baby, on her tippy-toes against a counter too tall for her to see over, stretching her right arm up with her tongue poked out in focus. Except half her arm was gone, stretched thin, a thread was pulling at the box of Girl Guide Cookies that was stashed between the cupboard and ceiling where Kakyoin had put it after letting Jolyne have a few.

The box fell to the counter and the thread pulled back to wrap around it, pulling it all the way back into Jolyne’s reforming hand like a lasso, and Jolyne grinned.

“Yes,” she whispered, proud of her success, and Kakyoin’s shock finally wore off.

“Jolyne!” he cried, rushing into the kitchen, and she jumped and looked at him with a mix of surprise and guilt.

“Daddy,” she said, holding out the box of cookies. “These fell down.” She was a terrible liar.

“I saw what you did, Jolyne.” Kakyoin kneeled down and took the box, setting it on the counter. Jolyne looked terrified, then.

“Are you mad?” she asked, looking down at her feet. “I’m sorry. I just wanted more cookies. I was going to share.”

“Oh, sweetheart.” Kakyoin ran a hand back through his hair, trying to think. Should he call Jotaro? They had talked about this, about Jolyne getting a stand. Jolyne peeked up at him sheepishly and Kakyoin sighed. “I’m not mad. This isn't about the cookies.”

“Is it about my magic? Did you see it?” she whispered and Kakyoin had to laugh. A stand, magic. Of course, she probably thought it was. It didn't seem strong enough yet to manifest itself physically.

“Yes, sweetie, I saw it.” Kakyoin swept her up into his arms and stood up, holding her close. As he stood, Hierophant appeared, wrapping themself around the two and dipping their head in close. “And do you want to know what it means?”

“What?” Jolyne looked at him with eyes bright.

“You have a stand!” Kakyoin said, hugging her. Jolyne seemed confused.

“Like Hero and Star?” Jolyne couldn't say Hierophant yet. “I haven’t seen anybody.”

“You will, soon. Come on, let’s call the old man.” Jotaro would probably be upset if he didn’t call about this big of a development, Kakyoin decided.

“Yay!”

-

“It’s like yours,” Jotaro said quietly, watching Jolyne from the couch as she sat on the carpet in front of the TV. It was after work, Jotaro couldn't get home immediately after the call, but Jolyne had been happy to demonstrate her abilities to him. Now they were watching Jolyne’s favourite movie as a treat. Kakyoin looked at him.

“Hm?” Kakyoin prompted and tucked a stray hair back behind Jotaro’s ear. He knew exactly what Jotaro was saying, but also knew he hadn't finished speaking. Jotaro only ever revealed a bit of his thoughts at a time.

“Like Hierophant. She could probably make a web if she tried.” Jotaro’s gaze turned to him. “You could teach her.”

“It seems too early to do anything like that,” Kakyoin replied and looked at Jolyne. “Let’s let things develop naturally. Stands know their user best. And the other way around.”

“What if something happens?” Something meant an enemy, Kakyoin knew. Jotaro never stopped worrying. Though Kakyoin rarely did, either.

“I’m always home, Jotaro. I decided to be a freelance artist for exactly this purpose,” Kakyoin said and then smiled wryly. “Plus, if anyone attacked us, with your reputation, they would be a fool.”

“Keep it down, you two! This is the best part!” Jolyne complained and peered over her shoulder at the offenders on the couch.

Jotaro let out a sigh and Kakyoin snickered.

“I think we need some supervision,” Kakyoin suggested.

Jolyne took the bait easily and stood up, running to the couch and climbing up onto Jotaro’s lap as quickly as she could to miss as little as possible of the movie.

“Now shh!” Jolyne insisted and rested back against Jotaro’s chest as he wrapped a protective arm around her, the other moving to rest along the back of the couch over Kakyoin’s shoulders.

Kakyoin cuddled into Jotaro’s side and planted a kiss on Jolyne’s head.
