when the moon fell in love with the sun

Summary:

Sunghoon is the moon.

Sunoo is the sun.

They don’t meet often, because that’s how nature works, they smile at each other passing by and call it a day. Eyes that gleam under the sunlight, and mouths that remain closed as the rest talk.

Work Text:

Sunghoon is the moon.

All bright and full but solemn at moments, a pale white mixed with a bit of yellow, that shines even during the day although not by himself. Sunghoon is and isn’t, at the same time. He’s two-faced in a good way, deceiving. By his looks, his manners, his personality.

Sunoo is the sun.

They don’t meet often, because that’s how nature works, they smile at each other passing by and call it a day. Eyes that gleam under the sunlight, and mouths that remain closed as the rest talk. Sunoo is a shining, blinding person, rays of light coming out of him, warm and clear. He’s aware of his own power, but doesn’t take advantage of it.

The moon doesn’t produce its own light, Moonlight is actually sunlight that shines on the moon and bounces off. The light reflects off old volcanoes, craters, and lava flows on the moon's surface. All perfect imperfections. So the moon needs the sun, to live, to be. It’s a fact, one that Sunghoon can’t ignore. No matter how hard he tries.

Because when he shines, sometimes late at night, alone, it’s not his own work. Sunoo helps, Sunoo is there for Sunghoon to brighten up everyone’s nighttime. In thought, in his imagination, in a picture he stares at on his phone. Sunoo exists to create.

And he creates, light and perpetuation. Yet sometimes chaos and destruction, too.

When the sun touches the moon just slightly, chaos erupts, the moon becomes dependent, becomes bashful and somehow inhibited. It’s a small contact, a passing brush in the hallways, and it makes the moon feel like home.

Home is a difficult concept, for both the sun and the moon, but they make it work.

Home is a Sunday morning with a cup of smoldering coffee, home is wherever the sun decides to go on a rainy, and cloudy night where they don’t shine as much. Home is the universe and the way Sunghoon holds Sunoo’s hand, delicate and earnestly. Now, the concept is a new one for them.

Sometimes the sun doesn’t shine. Therefore the moon doesn’t, either.

It’s hard to understand, hard to take in, and Sunghoon does his best to help Sunoo whenever he’s feeling down. But it’s not enough. There’s a thought, a feeling, that tells Sunoo he’ll never be enough, he’ll never glimmer as much as the rest. And Sunghoon is very conscious of it.

When the sun kisses the moon, it’s all golden in the sky. A fine, metallic color that takes over. The moon is full, so bright and silvery. And the sun burns with the intensity of a thousand suns. Sunghoon doesn’t believe it happens until he leans back and looks into Sunoo’s honey-like eyes, and they glow. Sunoo beams. And Sunghoon is blinded.

He reacts by closing his eyes and kissing back, pushing Sunoo against the bed. It’s hot to the touch, too radiant, too fiery. The sun allows the moon to push and push until gravity stops existing. Until their bodies become one, and the explosion it creates produces a hole so deep it sucks both of them in.

A black hole.

The sun collapses and takes the moon with it. Diving deep into hidden galaxies and nebulosas. Sunghoon doesn’t care that he can’t breathe, only focused on the way Sunoo holds him, with his hand against his skin under his shirt. It’s entrancing.

There are moments when the sky is dark, and the only thing shining is the stars that live far away. Moments in which the sun is too occupied to care for the moon, so the moon ceases thriving. Black blankets them, dotted and cold. Sunoo wants to understand, but Sunghoon and his temper are incredibly stubborn. When an idea gets into his brain, there’s almost nothing Sunoo can do to get it out.

They don’t fight, but don’t talk. So the sky turns a darker shade, a distant storm coming, vast gray clouds that cloud their vision and distort it.

It doesn’t last too long. After the storm comes the rainbow, mostly. And the sun smiles when the moon passes by, this time reaching out. Sunoo grabs Sunghoon’s arm and they walk hand in hand, a grin appearing on both their faces.

It’s gold, then, when they fall. It’s a short and easy drop, because they both saw it coming. Falling in love isn’t easy, but the sun and the moon make it work, no matter how difficult it can become.

The hallways cave in until there’s only space for them to walk through them. The distant voices and chatter are just white noise to their ears, because Sunghoon shines.

Sunghoon shines and Sunoo burns and their hands melt.

A sunny day, it is, when they step outside. Their friends comment on their hand-holding but Sunghoon hushes them as he points to the full moon making an appearance in the sky.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?”

Sunoo stares at him and nods.

“It is.”
