Chapter 4: silver bullet

Chapter Text

Two Years Later

“Do you have to get up,” Kaina mumbled into Rumi’s soft skin, nuzzling closer while her grip around Rumi’s waist got impossibly stronger. “We can just sleep in and—”

“You know I’d love to, but I actually have a job to get to. You know? The one I’m doing for you?”

“Quit then. Stay with me in bed forever.”

Rumi couldn’t help but chuckle at this impudence. Kaina always got like this when she didn’t get to sleep enough

“You can be my sugar baby. Don’t you want to jet-set around the world with me, live in luxury and never have to lift your finger again if you don’t want to? I’ll buy you the most lavish clothes, the most expensive jewels you can think of.”

With a snort, Rumi gently pushed Kaina away from her, shaking her head. “As tempting as this sounds to you, I’m just a regular girl. I need the dirt, my work… you don’t want me all restless and bored.”

Kaina’s expression darkened for a moment, clearly displeased about this rejection of her generous offer, yet she quickly recovered as she stretched with all the gusto of a lazy cat and rolled on her back. “I’d know just the right things to have you less bored and more sated.”

That earned her a pillow in her face.

“I think, you’re more afraid I might meet somebody else when I’m out too often, conspiring with other peasants,” Rumi teased, leaning down as Kaina peeked around the fluffy pillow, presenting herself like she was a three-course meal on top of the way-too-highly threaded Egyptian bed sheets she insisted on using. “Rolling in the dirt, getting close and sweaty while doing all our lowly tasks.”

Kaina wasn’t having it though, her expression sobered instantly.

“Listen, I am not of the jealous type. I don’t care what you do with your body or what you use it for. Who am I to deny you your weapons?”

She had proven that much several times in the past, encouraged even. Kaina really wasn’t one to get jealous over trivial things. However, her possessiveness knew no bounds in the important things.

“Your heart on the other hand. Promise me your heart will belong to me alone. You’ll be mine... until you have enough of me.”

Rumi wanted to laugh. The thought itself was laughable. How could she ever have enough of this woman that had not only shown her that there was more outside of her job, that some things didn’t require her to throw a punch and that the sweetest things in life could lessen the bitter sting of some less savoury methods they used. There was another fear eating away at Rumi though: “What if you grow tired of me first?”

“I don’t think anybody could ever grow tired of you. Your energy and your spirit are infectious, bunny.”

For a long moment, they simply looked into each other’s eyes, their bared hearts more powerful than any weapon, any drug they could lay their hands on.

The spell was broken though when an incoming text message reminded them of the real world though. Kaina dragged the covers over her face, stifling her groan. “Go! Go do your awfully righteous job as a cop, you horrible goody two shoes. And when they give Sumiyoshi all day, you better lock him up with a fucking grin.”

It had taken them nearly a year to find out who exactly Toyomitsu’s killer was, another couple of months to collect all the hard evidence and more. Of course, in the end, Sumiyoshi was just a pawn in a much bigger game Rumi still struggled to understand. However, for her, it was the first step in the right direction. Toyomitsu’s murderer would get his payback, and next they could start taking a much closer look at the generous donations her superiors had taken and were still receiving to this day to either keep their mouths shut or even worse, help the enemy.

“You better be home tonight though, it’s race day, bunny,” Kaina called after her when Rumi was already out of the bedroom.

“I won’t miss it!” Her grin was audible in her holler. It was the truth. Not a lot of things came close to the thrill of race day, and even those were all granted by Kaina herself. So of course, she wouldn’t miss that for anything in the world.
