Chapter Text

“Rafe?” It couldn’t be... he was in

“It’s me Brooklyn” He said out of breath. I finally turned around to face him, in shock, I was about to speak but he read my mind, knowing what I was going to say. He always did that. It was sweet. Sweet that we were able to read each other's minds. But terrifying because that’s exactly the word I would use to describe Rafe. “Listen Brooklyn... are you afraid of me? He said in a soft whisper. Scared of what my answer was going to be.

“Of course not. Just because Rose and literally everyone else in our family said that you’re a dangerous person and have deep psychological problems-

“I get the memo Brooklyn.” He said rolling his eyes,

“I’m not afraid of you Rafe. Even though there is definitely something wrong with you.” For real though, there is. “What are you doing here though? You’re supposed to be in a mental institution.”

“Yeah, I know.” He said sighing before falling on my bed and patting the side net to him for me to sit. When I sat down next to him, he began again. “I escaped. They don’t know I’m here.”

“Yeah, I gathered that.” I said sarcastically, ignoring him when he playfully swatted my arm. “Why though, did you escape?
I mean I sort of figured why. No one wants to be locked up in a mental institution. Mentally, I think something’s wrong with him, but I don’t think his problem is a mental illness. Instead, he should be forced to go to therapy every day for life.

“Brooklyn!” Rafe said a little to loudly.

“What?” I said a little spaced out. I tend to do that a lot.

“You’re spacing out again. Why? It can’t be me. I know I’m not boring.”

“Just… continue.” I said moving my hand for him to continue speaking.

“Brooklyn… you have to realize that our family are bad people. They’re the ones that out me in that hell hole. They don’t care about anyone but themselves.” He said with frustration and anger.

“Even Rose?” I said, hoping that the points that he just made weren’t about her.

“ESPECIALLY ROSE.” He said sounding frustrated. “She’s the one that convinced them to put me in there.”

Alright, I’ve had enough of this.

“Rafe, stop! The reason put you there is because you have mental problems.” Calm down. “Getting ha-

“Brooklyn, don’t you dare.” He said in a low creepy tone.

“Rafe, you are a disgusting human being. And you’re a creep. And I’m sorry if that offends you, or hurts your feelings, but it’s the truth. Truth hurts. You’re a psycho,” I said getting a little bit madder, “YOU’VE KILLED INNOCENT PEOPLE.”

“I killed three people, and they deserved it.” He said coldly. Unbelievable.

“Really? What about Jeanine? Did Jeanine deserve it?” Silence. Hm. That’s what I thought. “Get out of my room Rafe.” I said as he left in silence.

I checked my surroundings before leaving the suite. I had no idea where both Petra and Magda were, but frankly, I didn’t care. Let’s just hope that Rafe got to them before I did and killed them all. But that could never happen. Out of the people that Rafe cared about, it was only me and Magda. Why he cares about Magda I don’t know, but he knows that if he killed Petra, then Magda would somehow manage to blame her death on me, and then proceed to beat me to death.

As I went outside to where the reception was being placed, in my peripheral vison saw Rafael in a heated argument with who looked like to be my grandfather, not step grandfather, Emilio. Emilio being back in town was brand new information to me.

“EMILIO??” I said, excitement filling my voice.

“BROOKE” he said as I ran up to him to give him a big hug. Emilio was the only one I allowed to call me Brooke. I don’t like nicknames because it isn’t the name I was given at birth. My actual name is Berkline, but the name is so fucking ugly, that the first thing Magda did when we came to America was change the name. As much as I hate my grandmother, that was probably the best thing, or rather, the only thing she’s ever done for me that I liked.

“Emilio, I thought you said you would be here in two days?” I questioned.

“I was supposed to, but surprisingly everything went well, so I decided to return.”

“Well, I’m glad you did because we have a lot to talk about.” I said grabbing his hand and leading him away from my crazy in-laws.

“Yes, of course sweetie, but first-“

“I’ll be in the lobby finding Anna. Just find me when you’re done.” I said texting Anna and making my way towards the lobby. Not knowing who he was talking to, or what the commotion was.

Don't forget to comment and give me kudos. It encourages me to keep writing!

Notes:

I was writing this during all of my classes in my notebook, so I already started the second chapter. But... it is Christmas/Holiday break for me, so all though I am not writing as much as I do in school, I will still try to write. Since it's my birthday tomorrow I'm not going to be writing, but once school starts for me, expect frequent updates.

Hope you enjoyed the book!
