Chapter Text

It’s the contrast of warm sunlight against his skin, and the harsh cold of newly grown blades of grass under his feet that makes Taehyung sigh. That lovely calm only spring air can bring, the turn of seasons and you find yourself born again in a way. He’s always loved that, for so many reasons but he supposes it holds more to the feelings it sprouts now.

His robe, old and long since worn, trails delicately behind him, bunching over the field and sparkling a brilliant blue and white. It’s one of the few adornments he’s kept in all these years, usually preferring to keep his birthright a secret amongst the new lands they inhabit. And though it’s been ages and no longer under the care of seamstresses, the silk has still managed to keep itself together. Enough to make it a piece of his old life he couldn’t let go of.

He casually passes through the trees of the forest they reside in, their cottage not so far off but he awoke to find the other side of the bed empty, still warm enough to prove Jeongguk had just been there. It’s the reason he’s so giddy to come look, seek out his mate as he passes over stones, ankles now deep in the river, the cool water licking passed the juncture of his calves. Even his robes begin to soak and yet, Taehyung’s never minded this. There’s something beautiful about the water’s edge, the feel of it...so reminiscent of a time where his only view was a pond amongst castle grounds.

Admittedly, this scene was far more freeing.

Yet, it didn’t stop the memories from flooding back. Taehyung could still dig deep enough in himself to recall the way the water of the pond lapped around his legs, when it could make him smile because it was the few open areas he could be in. It dimmed in comparison to this river now, where the water was murkier and more traveled. Still, he could find something to feel fond over, even if it had been nine years already since he last saw that pond.

“Where did you go…?” He mutters to himself, though it holds no actual bite to it. He’s more amused by the disappearance of his mate, knowing Jeongguk often preferred to rise early in the day, a habit he never lost from his years as his guard. However, it doesn’t make Taehyung any less curious, it’s the reason he slid from the sheets, pulled the closest robe on and made his way outside of their cottage, humble as it was. One quick sniff of the air and he caught a fading trail of cedarwood, and inevitably...he followed.

Thankfully, it led him here; to a clearing in the forest, where the greatest half of the river opens into a large, beautiful body of calmed waves. Taehyung has to squint against the sunrise, hand shading the light away and he finally--finally, spots him.

Jeongguk is clothed in simple trousers, leather belt hanging loose around his hips, chest bare. Sometimes Taehyung truly believes he was more than happy to shed the usual armor he wore back then. Even his hair had grown longer, much beyond the regulations of normal guards, but Taehyung found it suited his mate more. His dark locks hung in short waves at the front, framing his strong features in a lovely manner that still made Taehyung sigh like he just fell in love. So much had changed on him--for them, but when Taehyung sniffs the air again he always feels like they’re back at the start in a way. Because Jeongguk’s scent always remained, only now it was mixed with a little of his own...and perhaps one more.

“Found you.” He whispers softly, breathless, and though he figures Jeongguk had already scented him coming his way long ago, the alpha still plays along.

Jeongguk makes no move to acknowledge him, just stands proud in the river, water up to his waist and fish rod in hand as Taehyung sinks deeper, closer. His robes now float around him, but he doesn’t mind the cold water, embraces it as he does his mate when his arms curl around Jeongguk’s hips, palms settling over his lower abdomen. He lays a small kiss to the center of Jeongguk’s shoulder blades, tip of his nose nuzzling up his spine and nestling over the hair of his nape. Taehyung can feel Jeongguk relax into him, stubbornly remaining silent until he leaves a nip to his neck, gingerly kissing over the area to ease the slight sting away.

“Keep that up,” The alpha huffs, shifting on his heels, so very visibly affected by the caress. “And I’ll miss catching today’s breakfast.”

The statement makes Taehyung laugh, hiding the majority of his giggles in the neck of his mate, shoulders trembling further when Jeongguk merely clicks his tongue, feigning offense. “Good morning, love.”

“Morning.” Jeongguk returns, setting the line he had and steadying the fishing rod between a cluster of rocks, Taehyung still attached to him the entire time. “Was going to try to surprise you both with breakfast, but well...you’ve gone and ruined that.” It’s playful, though, the way he whispers the words into Taehyung’s temple as he turns around, nuzzling the omega in greeting. His lips are soft when they brush down his cheek, over his nose and finally touching his own in a sweet kiss, both remaining still to simply soak in the affection. Taehyung braces himself against Jeongguk’s chest, palms pressed to him as they lazily kiss away the sunrise, the alpha’s arms now wrapping around his waist to bring him impossibly close. Their breaths are the only thing heard between them, soft and panting, lips peeling away only when they absolutely have to.

“I have something for you.” Jeongguk breathes against his lips, giving a quick peck to them before pulling away and smiling at the raised brow Taehyung gives.

He was used to the other bringing him random trinkets or treats from the village nearby, spoiling him with his own idea of riches just to keep him on his toes. Taehyung always told him those material goods weren’t necessary, something he long ago came to realize even when he had wealth at his fingertips, but Jeongguk still insisted every time. Saying it was his pleasure to do so, that prince or not he deserved more than the world could give and if that warmed Taehyung’s heart, he kept that to himself. Though he’d admit he did fret, half jokingly, over the fact his larger bathtub was a thing of the past.

Still, it’s easy to forget all of that, the pomp of emperors and kings, because to Taehyung what he had now in his life was far better and more than he could have ever wished for. The days were his now, fully, no treachery nipping at his heels. Only calm, joyful days. Where he could wake up to the chirping of birds, the sunlight and a mate he actually desired. They could be each others now, make love as they wished, no longer wary or fearful to steal a kiss. For all the years of hiding, the dynamic of their love has now finally shifted into what it always should’ve been; released.

“Do you?”

And Taehyung couldn’t be happier.

“That I do.”

Jeongguk wiggles his eyebrows for effect, making him laugh merrily at the sight and it’s moments like these that completely burst his heart, giving him every cause to believe all their heartbreak and tragedy had been worth it in the end.

Even when they both decided nine years ago to turn away from their old lives, to leave many loved ones behind...Taehyung cannot pretend he regrets it.

It wasn’t an easy decision, he knows that--can admit that. But sometimes, sometimes fate (or a strongly written letter) can change a mind. So when the choice of sticking around to be a prince with more freedom, or leave and begin something new came about, both he and Jeongguk held the same desire. Leaving Hoseok behind, Jimin and Yoongi...even Jihoon in a way, had been difficult but their family supported them, had even bid them farewell with a blessing. Taehyung had held all of them for hours on end, until his arms ran numb from the embrace and even when they were loaded into a wagon, given coin to start easier, he still almost didn’t let go.

Not until it was Jeongguk who took his hand, squeezed it tight and kissed the backs of them just to reassure him of their future.

And what a future he was blessed with.

Though he wanted little in life, he can safely say he was given far more. They traveled for a time, months flying by with them merely enjoying the lands new to them. ‘Til one morning when they happened upon a forest, endless and scenic, with flowers that bloomed along the edges in various colors and a village not too far off. One look alone and they both knew it was home.

“Close your eyes for me.”

Jeongguk calls him back to reality, the visions of the past fading as Taehyung lets out a small chuckle, doing as he’s told with a giddy sense of excitement. “And what is it this time? More strawberry cakes? Or...perhaps,” Taehyung sniffs the air, a hint of floral hitting his senses. “More of that perfume that merchant prefers to make…” He can hear the alpha snickering, something soft touching the tips of his fingers, so soft it makes him shiver in delight. “Can I open them now?”

“Mmm...no. I’m busy admiring you.”

“You can’t do that with my eyes open?”

“Let me be shameless, will you?”

“Jeongguk.”

“Alright, alright…”

It feels like he still waits forever, but he’s patient, enjoying the silence between them. How could he not, after all, when their entire love story was built upon a foundation of trust and endless longing. Taehyung, in fact, would submit to the very idea of waiting on Jeongguk forever by this point.

“Open them, Tae.”

He slowly blinks them open, squinting against the sun still rising. Something pink comes into view, the shape of smooth petals forming before his eyes and he can’t help but smile at the gift in his love’s hand. “Oh.” Taehyung lifts his finger to touch it, mindful of the delicate flower but no less enthusiastic by its presence. “A rose, now where on earth did you manage to find one of those out here. I know very well they don’t grow in these parts.”

“Well,” Jeongguk winks at him, brushing his hair aside as he helps the rose over his ear to adorn him. The alpha’s fingertips linger over his silky strands, combing down to his nape before he pulls away with an endeared grin. “Fairies.” Is his only answer, admiring Taehyung and it’s evident how taken he is by the illustration of him like this; vibrant rose against his tanned complexion and silver locks.

“These fairies wouldn’t happen to be those sweet old florists in the village, would they?”

“It’s a possibility.” Jeongguk leans in to nuzzle him, kissing down towards his neck where he playfully nips the mating mark. “You look beautiful, by the way.”

“Mmm, thank you.” The gratitude leaves him in a heavy sigh, airy and fond while he smooths his palms down Jeongguk’s chest.

“You know,” His alpha says between light kisses, tasting each inch of Taehyung’s skin. “They were kind enough to reveal their sources to me.” His fingers move the silk robe aside, caressing down his sternum and provoking goosebumps to flush across his body. The kind that makes Taehyung writhe in his grasp, eager and happy.

“And that would be?”

“The seeds come from the royal gardens.”

Now that captures Taehyung’s attention, his eyes shooting open and a slow smile spreading. “Ah.” Though it’s information he thrives on, he won’t pretend he’s surprised. It should be the rose’s season down there, after all and over the years it’s been so evident how open to all of their lands his brother had become in regards to trade. Even down in the castle grounds, Hoseok had allowed merchants to flood to their gates, every new season providing a safe harbor for them to show off their new wares. While it was undoubtedly to Hoseok’s benefit, it also provided a better livelihood for their people. To say the kingdom has thrived under the beta’s care would be an understatement, because Hoseok has done more than any king has in the past. And though their only contact with each other has been through the occasional letter, Taehyung will say he feels closer to Hoseok than he ever has before.

Though, the absence of physical contact wasn’t for lack of trying, that is. Of course, Taehyung missed them all dearly and letters were hardly a reprieve some nights, but time gets away from you on occasion. It started when a year passed, then another and distance feels greater when traveling by horseback and by the time they had soundly built their new home amongst the forest, it had been three years between them all. Then when they decided it was time to visit, fate had other ideas for them.

“Of course, that’s where they came from.” Taehyung giggles the words out, letting Jeongguk hum in response as the alpha leads him back towards a tree, still keen on memorizing his body all over again. “They are as beautiful as I remember…” The alpha stops briefly to give his attention elsewhere, nosing at his jaw and nurturing a mixture of their scents.

“You’re beautiful.”

Taehyung scoffs, amused by the compliment. “So you’ve said a hundred times just this morning.”

“It hasn’t been that much...has it?” The question sounds sincere, but Jeongguk’s eyes don’t mask the obvious contentment he finds in that knowledge.

“Yes.” Taehyung can’t help but tease. “Twice just now, seven times in our bed...and I swear that was far earlier this morning.”

“That’s only nine, pup.”

“I swear it was more. Don’t you remember?” It’s hard not to play along, nipping at Jeongguk’s bottom lip and riling the alpha up. “In our bed...hours ago…”

“I am not likely to forget those things, Tae. And,” Jeongguk smirks at him, though it’s more fond than arrogant. “I would very much love a repeat of those events.”

Taehyung keeps him a breath away, palm on his chest, nails teasing the smooth skin but his refusal is weak, feigned and the display does little to ward off Jeongguk’s hands from gripping his hips hungrily. “You’ll forget our breakfast this way.”

“Well, I did warn you.”

“I suppose you did…” Taehyung tilts his head back in a small laugh, the sound breaking into a whimper as they grind their hips together. The pleasure sparks down his spine, arching his lower back and he tries to keep his noises down but it’s difficult when lips begin to trail over his collarbone, tongue licking and teeth nipping possessively. “Jeongguk…” His eyes slip closed from the intimacy, hands squeezing strong arms but a single rock of his hips makes him gasp, the need to look upon his mate growing and when he finally has the mind to gaze back at him, something clouds his vision.

Taehyung stares at the hill towards their cottage, the view blurry in his haze only for a moment but as it clears he sees him. A small figure, a sprightly child that is clouded in the neutral scent of air before a storm. It’s the soft aroma of innocence, playful but typical of a wolf unpresented and the very presence makes Taehyung smile.

He sets to tapping Jeongguk’s bare shoulder, his own wolf reluctant to stop their actions but never wishing to let his child catch them in such an indecent manner. “We have company.”

Jeongguk simply hums into his neck, pulling back and grinning with a short laugh when he catches sight of their son running down the hill, nearly tripping over his own feet in his haste.

And this, this is the very reason they’ve never left this place in so long. Yet, how could Taehyung regret such a fated delay in their plans when it has brought him nothing but endless bliss.

“How is he capable of so much energy this early? When I was his age I begged whatever gods to let me sleep more.”

Taehyung lets out an amused scoff, rolling his eyes as he nudges the alpha away from him, inclined to fix his robes to a decent position. “You are just bitter we were interrupted.” Jeongguk just huffs, kissing his forehead one last time before giving them space, kneeling down to get closer to his son’s height. Taehyung watches as the small wolf comes bundling into Jeongguk’s arms, who begins to nuzzle the boy, scenting him and making the child laugh as he swats his father away.

“Stop, I’m not a baby anymore!”

“No?” Jeongguk sniffs around him, raising his eyebrow in challenge making Taehyung bite back his smile at the scene. “You don’t smell like an alpha, or a beta...and nope, not even an omega. So,” He continues to tease him, nuzzling along his round cheeks and neck. “Still a pup after all, I’m afraid.”

Taehyung tries his best not to laugh at the annoyed look his son throws Jeongguk’s way, but the sullen expression is quickly relieved by a mere toss in the air, Jeongguk safely catching his son who drops back into his arms with a joyous laugh. The air around the child makes his black tresses flutter, and when he falls for a second time into Jeongguk’s arms Taehyung catches the soft whiff of something floral or perhaps earthy around him. He can’t yet pinpoint the exact base scent, but something in his nature tells him their son will be a beta when he presents. The thought comforts him, because there’s something in the way their child acts that allows Taehyung to realize how well that suits him. Even though the natural desire of being an alpha clouds his fantasies, like it does with all children and clearly provoked by Jeongguk and his typical strength and courage (a hero like figure for most young wolves), Taehyung knows he’ll be a perfect beta. Besides, there’s something about him that reminds Taehyung of his middle brother, the endless energy of Hoseok. But it’s his curious mind that makes Taehyung smile the most, so very much like that of his eldest brother…

“Alright, that’s enough.” Taehyung embraces Jeongguk from the back, clasping his hands around his lean waist and pulling him closer, hooking his chin over his shoulder. The alpha tilts his head to look at him, smiling at the affection. “He’ll get dizzy, love, put him down.” Jeongguk is quick to oblige, ruffling his hair when the child sulks.

“You heard your father, my hands are tied, Seokjin.”

“But--”

“His hands are tied.” Taehyung scolds, fighting back another laugh when Seokjin huffs, crossing his arms.

“You’re both no fun.”

The attitude just makes Jeongguk chuckle, Taehyung hiding his smile in his mate’s shoulder, but true to the boy’s nature, he forgets the slight, instead pointing up at Taehyung with a curious look.

“That looks pretty.”

His small finger directs towards the rose in Taehyung’s hair, making the omega hum in satisfaction. “Doesn’t it? A gift from your father.”

“Can I have one too?”

“Did you clean out the stables?” Jeongguk interrupts, kneeling down by him again, squinting suspiciously when Seokjin nods. “Did you?”

“Yes! I promise.”

“In that case,” The alpha pulls one from behind him, Taehyung’s eyes seeing the small satchel at his hip but hidden from their son who blinks and gasps like some grand sorcery has been performed. “This belongs to you. A lovely yellow one.” He puts it into Seokjin’s hair, the boy excitedly gesturing at him and Taehyung, screaming about them matching now.

“We look alike, papa.” He hugs Taehyung’s legs, squeezing tight.

“We do.” Taehyung smiles, bending down to kiss atop his head. “Come now, let’s go feed the horses.”

“Oh, there’s already a man doing that.”

That instantly causes Jeongguk to perk up, whipping his head towards the hill where their cottage rests. His brow furrows in concern, hands coming to pull Taehyung and Seokjin behind him as he eyes where the stables would be. “What man?”

But their son only shrugs, his bored look turning sour when he notices how tense his parents are. “H-He’s kind of short, said I should come fetch you both, that it was something important.”

“What have I told you about speaking with strangers?!” Jeongguk’s voice raises, his scowl deepening when he notices the boy pouting, lip trembling from being scolded, and just as quickly the anger fades. The alpha sighs, still alert but he pulls Seokjin closer, sniffing him carefully to pick up any foreign scents but he catches nothing.

“But he knew your names, even knew papa was a prince.” Seokjin tugs desperately at Taehyung’s robes, leaning into him more when he senses Jeongguk’s concern.

However, it’s those words that catch both of their attention, the shock evident on their faces. If there was one thing Taehyung wanted, it was to keep his birthright a secret from all around here. To the villagers nearby, he was merely a commoner, nothing more.

“Stay here, both of you.”

“Jeongguk--”

“Please. Just stay put.” He kisses them both on the forehead, taking one step forward before his path is halted by a hooded figure just feet away, the dark cloak he wears drenched in mud at the ends, proving he must’ve made a long journey. No scent comes from him, and Jeongguk flinches back before he snarls in warning, covering his family who peek around him.

The concern, however, is replaced by a dumbfounded sort of silence when the figure pulls the hood off, familiar eyes greeting them as Jeongguk stutters over his shock. “Y-Yoongi?”

“Jeong--” Yoongi’s smile is filtered by a surprised huff, his own reception being cut off by an overdue embrace, the shorter alpha laughing as he hugs his old friend back, patting along his shoulder in relief. “It’s good to see you. It has been ages, I know.” Yoongi smiles at Taehyung over Jeongguk’s shoulder, grunting when his friend squeezes him tighter instead. “But you must let me go soon or I’m likely to suffocate.”

“Can you blame me, Yoongi?” Jeongguk pulls away, looking him over like he’s still in disbelief. “I scarcely believe it’s you.”

“Ah, but it is.” Yoongi supplies, finally moving towards Taehyung who pulls him into an equally tight hug.

Their son moves back to Jeongguk now, suddenly wary of the stranger as he hides behind the alpha’s legs, peeking around them as if he’s testing the waters, waiting to see if he’ll be scolded again.

“I didn’t scent you.” Jeongguk says, gently placing a palm over Seokjin’s hair to ease his fright.

“Ah, well…” Yoongi pulls a small vial from his cloak, turning the tube in his hand with a sheepish look. “Purchased this from a merchant at the village down the river, said it had the power to block scents..I wanted to surprise you. To be fair, I didn’t believe it would work but...guess I wasn’t swindled out of my coin after all.”

Taehyung laughs into his hand, giving Yoongi a fond squeeze to his arm. “I’m glad it did. This is--I have no words, Yoongi. I can only say that we’ve missed you greatly...it really has been far too long.” He can’t help but hug the alpha again, holding him that much tighter just to make up for all the years they’ve missed.

“Is he safe…?”

They all look down towards Seokjin, the boy still nestled at Jeongguk’s side, looking up at his father who smiles warmly, ruffling his hair again. “It’s alright, Seokjin. You did well on this one.” Jeongguk nods towards Yoongi, winking at the boy as he does. “Go on, say hello. This one is practically family.”

Neither parent misses the way Yoongi beams at that, the guard now kneeling down to the boy’s height. “Thank you for fetching them for me.”

Seokjin hesitates for a moment, blinking back at the alpha before his lips stretch into a smile that could mimic Jeongguk’s own. “I wanted to help.”

“And so you did.” Yoongi praises.

“How do you know my papa’s?” Seokjin tilts his head at him, holding onto Jeongguk’s hand for protection as he gets closer to the other alpha.

“That...is a very long story, but I can tell you that I’m the one that trained your father and taught him everything he knows.” He winks, easily convincing Seokjin he must be the strongest wolf ever to have taught his own father, judging by the way the boy bombards him with questions now, tugging on his cloak and making Yoongi laugh.

To Taehyung and Jeongguk, it’s slightly strange to see their old friend around a child, always being more reserved in that area, but it does suit him. Even if they had mentioned in past letters of their son’s birth, not much meetings had taken place, and so if Yoongi is surprised to see how much the boy has grown, he doesn’t show it. Only laughs at how eager the child seems, still too young to fully understand the world around him or the lives his father’s held before, but no less enthusiastic to learn.

“Seokjin, leave him be.” Taehyung sighs, giving Yoongi an apologetic look as he grabs his son’s hand, tugging him towards the cottage. “Go on, now. Go wash up and prepare some plates for us four, hm?”

“But--”

“Now.”

Seokjin pouts at him, relenting only when Taehyung gives him that look. Still, he manages to tell Yoongi he’ll be right back before rushing off towards their home, leaving both parents with a humored look of tired affection.

“He’s fearless, that one.” Yoongi smiles at them, the happiness in his eyes so clear it makes Taehyung beam with pride. There’s a mirrored sort of relief in all of their gazes, no doubt their want to be near each other again filtering through. “And a good name.”

“Thank you…” Taehyung nods, looking back to their home. “As I’ve said in the past, I couldn’t have possibly picked a better one.”

There’s a small silence, Yoongi smiling at them both, nine years of lost time between friends seen in his eyes but he doesn’t appear resentful. No, Taehyung would venture to say he looks nothing but content. “I can’t believe I’m actually standing before you both...and with your son. I know you wrote to us, and I expected to see him but I just couldn’t…” He laughs, the sound something akin to emotional in its own way. “You haven’t aged a day, either of you.”

“You’re one to talk.” Jeongguk quips back, looking the other over with fond eyes. And Taehyung can say he isn’t wrong. Though he seems more eased in demeanor than the Yoongi of ages ago, he’s still very much the same alpha--same guard Taehyung remembers.

“Well, reunions aside,” Yoongi clears his throat, leaning against the tree and staring at them both and normally his gaze would be close to stoic, but Taehyung takes easy note of the way the alpha’s cheeks flush a soft pink, his lips setting into a tight line like he’s almost shy to speak further. “I didn’t just come all this way because I missed you both...though I’ll admit the letters are barely enough these days.”

“Sorry...I know it--”

“No.” Yoongi shakes his head, waving off both their apologies. “Believe me, I understand and I could never fault either of you for it. After all, is this not what we fought so hard for back then?” There was no lie in that, every single one of them knew the sacrifices they’ve made and it would’ve all been for naught if they had stubbornly thrown their desires away to keep some semblance of what they had before. This was to be Jeongguk and Taehyung’s life, one they loved and wanted---even needed. And by the looks of it, even those who remained in the castle had become acclimated to their life, had seemed to carry on with equal adoration of the world they’ve built since.

“You could say that.” Taehyung answers, leaning against Jeongguk happily, knowing he can’t feel an ounce of regret in his heart. “I hope the others aren’t too angry with us?” But Taehyung knows they wouldn’t be, can already hear Jimin and Hoseok screaming at him to stop worrying over them when he has a family to protect and love out here.

“Angry?” It’s almost like the idea catches Yoongi off guard, but he quickly recovers with a chuckle, rolling his eyes for good measure. “They couldn’t be happier to know where you’ve both come. In fact, Jimin’s already calling himself an uncle.”

“Oh my…” The image that conjures warms Taehyung’s heart, his lips curling into a fond grin because Jimin has been begging him to meet their son for ages through their letters. He always promised he’d bring him along, one day...but six years passed since Seokjin’s birth and it became harder to travel with a newborn and toddler. He supposes now would prove a better time. “I’ve been meaning to go...we both have. I’d love to, actually.”

“Well now is as good a time as any.”

“What do you mean?”

That blush comes back to Yoongi’s cheeks, his fist hovering over his mouth as he clears his throat awkwardly, shifting from boot to boot like he’s close to running off instead of speaking up. “T-There’s to be...a bonding.”

“A bonding?” Jeongguk speaks up, eyebrows raised in surprise. “Hoseok? He’s finally decided to settle down, has he?”

“Uh--”

“I can’t believe he didn’t tell me.” Taehyung huffs in betrayal, but there’s a blooming sort of elation in him, the idea of Hoseok finding a mate more than good news.

“Wait---”

“Jeongguk, we should go! We won’t miss that, he needs my help to--”

“It’s not Hoseok!” Yoongi nearly stutters over the exclamation, his flush growing deeper until it’s spread down his pale neck, making both men stare back at him in wonder. “It…” He sighs. “The bonding is to be between…”

It dawns on Taehyung shortly after, his eyes widening before he’s pointing at the guard, that warmth in his heart growing even stronger because it’s been so long and he knows his best friend and Yoongi have grown close, practically mates in every sense of the word besides official but they were always more slow to move, perfectly happy to be traditional in a way. Taehyung would even admit he knows the intimate details of their relationship through letters, always smiling fondly at how shy Jimin could be about it. “Jimin and...you?”

“Y-Yes…”

“Yoongi!” Taehyung nearly topples him over, pulling him into an excited embrace as he coos over them and their love, mumbling about how much joy they’ll have together. “You both deserve it, we’ll be there, of course, we’ll be there.”

“I just needed to tell you in person...felt more...right.”

“Nine years and you’re barely mating him? Have you even kissed?” Jeongguk interrupts their moment, the teasing tone not lost on the guard who huffs through a laugh, no doubt recalling all the years before where he pined from a distance, too reserved to make a move or court the omega.

“Jeongguk! Leave him be.”

“He’s not wrong.” Yoongi snorts, nudging the other alpha with a knowing look. “However, some of us prefer a more traditional approach and not the ‘steal an omega on his bonding night and mate him then’…”

It’s Jeongguk’s turn to laugh, the small shameful blush making Taehyung smile, even when his mate says, “Well...it was worth it.”

He can’t say he disagrees.

“If you’re both done comparing love stories,” Taehyung motions them forward, heading up the hill. “Come inside for breakfast, we can talk more of bonding arrangements and travel plans.”

“It will take place at the start of the next month,” Yoongi offers, his arm wrapped around Jeongguk’s neck as he playfully tugs the younger alpha with him. “That should be just enough time for us to travel back, given the fair weather at that.”

“Two and half weeks on horseback?”

“Give or take. I brought along one of the royal carriages, which should make for an easier journey.” Yoongi says.

“Very well.” Taehyung opens their cottage door, the fresh smell of bread delighting his senses and he can see Seokjin now running down the small steps from the floor above, pulling on a new tunic as he heads towards the two alphas excitedly. “I think that’ll be more than enough time.”

“For what, papa?” Seokjin hooks onto Jeongguk’s leg, letting his father carry him around like that even when his attention remains on Taehyung. “Where are we going?”

“To see family, little one.”

*

It took exactly two weeks to end their journey, from the point of packing what they could to settling in the carriage while Yoongi and Jeongguk caught up outside holding the reins. Fortunately, all the new sights were easy enough to distract Seokjin, his large doe eyes sparkling at the most mundane things but Taehyung can relate. All the time he spent traveling with Jeongguk made him aware of the small details, from different birds in the forest compared to the kingdom, to the way his surroundings changed scents so drastically. He supposes these are things most take for granted, but to him it was perfection. Seokjin may have an abundance of areas to roam in his young age, but other than the outlying villages, they didn’t travel too far. With a young pup it made it harder, dangerous even given the right area, so they wished to wait before ever making too long a journey but this was, as Yoongi mentioned, as good a time as any. Deep down, Taehyung was more than grateful for the opportunity. Being able to watch his son poke his head out the windows, fingertips reaching for the large vines of a willow tree as they passed, was just another sight to make him feel appreciative.

“Are we almost there?”

“Keep asking and we’ll leave you to the bandits.” Jeongguk leaned back into his seat, now resting inside the carriage with them after spending most days out with Yoongi directing the horses. They were nearly at the castle, the familiar view of woods coming into sight with willow trees, and birds he can recall from memory now, even just by their songs.

“There’s bandits here?”

Taehyung isn’t sure if he should be bothered by how casual his son asks that, but it would suit him well enough to hold that courageous streak in him. “Your father is just teasing, Seokjin.”

“No.” Jeongguk smirks, pulling his son into his lap and pointing outside the window, the blur of trees flying by as Yoongi leads the horses into a harsher trot. “There really is. They just hide out in the brush, waiting for bad little pups to spirit away.”

If he’s frightened, Seokjin doesn’t show it, he just huffs in annoyance, glaring up at Jeongguk as if he should’ve been rid of these ‘bandits ’ ages ago. “Go fight them.”

The demand makes both parents snicker, Jeongguk shaking his head adamantly. “Absolutely not. I’m too scared.”

“No, you’re not, papa. You’re just being lazy.”

“Ouch. You sound too much like Yoongi now.”

Taehyung smiles at their back and forth, eventually swatting at Jeongguk’s arm to stop goading the boy into trivial arguments. “Both of you quiet down, we’re here.”

Within seconds the carriage begins to slow, the familiar sound of the portcullis opening making Taehyung gaze out the window with his son, who hops around his lap a little too enthusiastically it nearly hurts him. “Settle down.”

“But Yoongi is getting off, can I go with him?”

Try as he might, Taehyung can’t refuse those eyes and he nods with a small smile, letting his son bounce out of the carriage in one eager bundle, running after his new favorite uncle in stride.

“Did you ever think we’d be back here?” Jeongguk speaks up, getting out first just to aid him down the steps, mindful of the robes he wears.

“Yes...eventually.” Taehyung takes his love’s hand, keeping hold of it even when they’re down from the carriage and bowing at the guards who man the gates. “Should’ve been long ago, but…”

“Hush, Tae. It’s as it should be, I think. Whether now or before, at least we’ve made it.” His mate brushes aside his hair, tucking some fallen strands behind his ear and leaving a comforting kiss to his cheek. In a way, Taehyung will admit it’s strange to be in the middle of the castle grounds, sharing affection with an alpha who shouldn’t have been more than a mere guard to him...but here they are, and when he glances around taking it all in, something about it all feels incredibly right.

“Yes, I suppose that’s true.”

“It is, love. Besides, one year or nine, I promise you the others aren’t angered by the absence.”

“That so?”

“Mmhm.”

“And how do you know this?”

Jeongguk nods towards the castle entrance, the high steps coming into view and Taehyung glances up to see him, Jimin, eyes wide and lips parted in cheerful astonishment. His attire is much different now, and Taehyung can guess it’s Hoseok’s doing to have given the servants more than his father ever did, or any ancestor before them. The omega is clothed in ivory trousers and matching tunic, the high collar tailored to him, with just a few cotton ruffles coming from it. In all honesty, he’s the very portrait of what a prince should look like. “Jimin…” The omega looks down at them all, Yoongi stopping at the foot of the high steps with Seokjin holding his hand. Taehyung sees the way Jimin briefly smiles at Yoongi, before his friend comes bounding down the steps, arms already outstretched and then he’s engulfed in the warmest hug he’s known.

“It’s been nine years, you idiot prince.” Jimin muffles the words into his neck, breathing in Taehyung’s scent like he’s afraid he’ll forget it.

“Not a prince anymore, Jimin.” He laughs, rubbing gingerly at Jimin’s back to soothe him.

“You always will be to me.”

“Can I at least be your friend first?”

“Taehyung,” Jimin leans away, cupping his cheeks with a relieved look. “You know the answer to that.” They spend an inordinate amount of time embracing each other, even when their alphas pass by, Jeongguk patting Jimin’s back in greeting, they aren’t disturbed. Not until he feels a tug at his leg, shifting to look down and see his son staring up at him, more inquisitive than afraid of the stranger and Taehyung believes it’s just comfort of another omega that lets Seokjin feel unbothered by the new presence.

“Oh.” He lets go of his friend, nodding for Jimin to glance down and when the omega follows he nearly crumbles in adoration at the sight of the child. “Jimin, this is Seokjin, I know I’ve been promising you--”

“The fact you hid this precious boy from me is betrayal enough.” Jimin smiles at him, though, kneeling down and immediately tugging Seokjin into a hug, both of them appearing fond of each other already. “I can’t believe how big he is already.”

“He does grow fast.” Taehyung admits, watching as Jimin pinches Seokjin’s cheeks, an act that would make the child recoil if it were his parents but apparently if it’s Jimin he’s perfectly content to endure the affection.

“Do you want to meet your other uncle?” Jimin asks him, to which Seokjin nods eagerly, letting Jimin take his hand and haul him up the steps, Taehyung by their side. “They’re all waiting in the throne room.”

“They?”

“Ah,” His friend glances back at him, giving a shrug but the glint in his eye speaks differently. “Another old friend, is all.”

“So cryptic of you.”

“You won’t be disappointed, I promise.”

Taehyung takes his word for it, moving along the halls as they make their way in, his eyes perusing the new decor and renovations done. He can recall how the hall down his left used to be barren of anything but old stone and broken sculptures. How the door leading through that corner led to a stairwell, filled by portraits and when Taehyung finds more free time today, he’ll be sure to look upon it again. To see how different it is from the last time he was in there. The memory makes him smile, knowing that day was something of a terrible heartbreak, knowing Jimin had been the one to find him and hold him in comfort. How strange that is now, because he’ll find he’s no longer filled with a constant dread as he trails deeper into the castle.

Time has done this place well, he decides. Under the hands of his brother and friends it no longer feels a dungeon to him. If he so wished, he’d even dare to call this place something of a home to him now.

“You alright?”

Warmth engulfs his side, an arm wrapping around his waist and pulling him closer, Jeongguk’s steady gaze on him like it has always been. Now it feels free of any burden, has been for years but to feel that love in this castle is beyond a blessing to him. “Yes, do not worry. Just...brings back so many memories, doesn’t it?”

“Hm, it does. I was telling Yoongi I’d like to see how the guards quarters look now. He’s been bragging about them as it is.”

“No more cots and shared rooms?”

“You remember my complaints about them?”

“I do.” Taehyung replies, gently poking his mate’s side. “It’s one of the poor excuses you gave me back then, just to spend a night in my chambers.”

The admission makes the alpha laugh, a knowing look in his eyes when he turns back to Taehyung, fully aware and unapologetic of his lies. “To be fair, I always knew you didn’t believe me.”

“So?”

“So, clearly you held no qualms about my company.”

“No.” Any other answer would’ve been a blatant lie on his part, so he relents to the prying eyes of his mate, Jeongguk now smirking triumphantly in that attractive way. Taehyung can’t fault him for his pride, however, and merely rolls his eyes at him, tugging him down the hall to catch up to the others as they pull open the throne room door.

Seokjin immediately runs back to their sides, making Jimin giggle at the sudden shyness he shows. Taehyung understands, though, because the throne room has always cut an intimidating figure, and even with its now blue carpeting and silver trimmed throne it still spoke of power in all its trappings.

“Taehyung? Jeongguk?”

They both turn around from where they’re facing the throne, startled when they find Hoseok there, parchment in hand being given to a nearby advisor who quickly bows and rushes off. He’s not changed much, Taehyung notices, his hair still cut the same, eyes still lively and kind. He’s dressed in a deep blue robe, the trim of the sleeves black and they flow all the way to the ground. In truth, he looks kingly and in all his years of growing up here Taehyung would’ve never believed this would be the outcome. Now, he knows deep in his heart Jin would’ve been a fine monarch but if there was anyone worthy enough to fill his shoes it would and should be Hoseok.

“Hoseok…”

“I anticipated your visit, but I still cannot believe it’s you...my gods, come here.” The beta rushes forward to them, leaving a gentle kiss to Taehyung’s temple and wasting no more time to take them into a hug. Unlike the others, he doesn’t dally too long in the embrace, opting to peer down at the boy who looks at him with so much awe in his eyes. Hoseok seems amused by it, and true to his usual excitable nature, he leans down to pick his nephew up, bundling him close to his chest and cooing at how adorable he is. “I’ve been waiting to have you in my arms for years, Seokjin!”

“You’re my uncle Hobi?”

Taehyung sees the way his brother’s eyes glaze over, evidently taken by how innocently Seokjin says it. The sight itself is heartwarming, making him regret not coming sooner for a split second until he realizes Jeongguk is right; it’s as it should be.

“I’m so glad you all came, I know it wouldn’t have been as special without all of us here. Yoongi’s been pestering me to give him leave to surprise you. I’m elated it all paid off.”

“We wouldn’t miss it, Hoseok. Not ever.”

“You have no idea how much it soothes me to hear that. However, I do ask you stay a while, even though the bonding is in just days, I was hoping you’d be receptive to a week or two of visits. I’ve missed you both terribly enough, let me have time with you and this one here.” Hoseok nuzzles his nephew’s cheek, making the boy laugh in his grasp before he wiggles out of his arms and back towards his fathers.

“You know I cannot say no to that request. We’d be happy to.”

“Good because--” Hoseok pauses when the door to the back opens, some advisors going in and out around the conference table set there, but it’s one man that captures all of their attention, but only Taehyung and Jeongguk seem surprised to see him. “Ah, Jihoon! Come, come.” The beta waves him over, the alpha already smiling as he stalks across the marble, gaze hovering over Seokjin.

“I see your time away has proven fruitful for you both.”

Taehyung blushes a little at the comment, Jeongguk just smiling proudly down at his son, who looks just as stunned by the other man as he was Hoseok. But he still gives a small bow to him, making Jihoon laugh as he kneels down to greet him well.

“Hello there.”

“Hi…”

“Do you know who I am?”

Seokjin looks up at his parents, Taehyung mumbling out the name and it’s enough to make Seokjin gasp a little. He steps closer to the older man, small hands cupping Jihoon’s face as he says, “You’re my grandfather.” And the shock on Jihoon’s face is worth all the time they’ve spent away.

“I…”

It’s not everyday you see a king lost for words, but here Jihoon kneels, lips parted in surprise as he blinks back at their son. Of course, he’s known of Seokjin’s existence, even gave his blessing through a letter when he heard of the name chosen, but their correspondence wasn’t as often as it was between Hoseok and Jimin. Taehyung would estimate it has been at least two years since he wrote to the man. He knows some things that have transpired, such as Jihoon taking over Hajoon’s reign within months of returning back to his kingdom all that time ago, knows Hajoon had died in the dungeons several years into his imprisonment. Jihoon also never bothered to rebond with anyone, held no heirs and therefore was uncompromising when he told Hoseok all his lands would be his upon his death. Taehyung recalls how much Hoseok had refused at first, writing to him multiple times that he couldn’t find it in himself to receive so much, but in the end, stubborn as ever, Jihoon got his way.

Taehyung is grateful to him for it, for a number of things he’s done for them all and it was his desire their son be raised with someone he could call grandfather. A man they trusted with their lives.

“I suppose I am, Seokjin..it’s my honor.”

That seems to thrill their son, his arms coming to wrap around Jihoon’s neck, effectively distracting the king from his current duties. No one has it in them to complain, however and really the time away from politics is more than deserved for them all. It’s the reason Taehyung leans closer to Hoseok, his inquiry soft as to not disturb the serene atmosphere. “May I see them?”

“Taehyung,” Hoseok squeezes his hand, that same bright smile he’s always worn on his features directed at him. “You know you don’t need to ask. They’re yours to visit whenever you wish.”

“Yes, forgive me. I just...there are moments I berate myself for never coming.”

“Please, there’s no need. If you fear Jin’s disappointment I doubt he has any, wherever his spirit may be.” Hoseok chuckles, threading his arm around Taehyung’s as he leads them out of the throne room and towards the gardens. “You being gone so long, finding your happiness is precisely what he wanted.”

“I know....I do. I only wish to say...that I miss him as much as I did back then. Dare I say, even more.”

“Me too, Tae. Everyday.”

“I wish he could’ve met his nephew...he’d have loved him, I think.”

“Believe me, Tae, that isn’t even up for debate.”

*

Taehyung wasn’t sure what he was expecting when they came out here. The last time he glanced upon his brother and Namjoon’s resting place had been those nine years ago, a day after the funeral. They had buried them together, side by side, their gravestone one elongated slab of marble, engraved in the proper way to show the two as heroes. It had taken Taehyung hours to leave the gravesite, his mind reconciled to grieving at the time. One look upon the stone and his eyes would swell up with tears, his heart straining in his chest but he can at least, with confidence, say that isn’t the case anymore.

It wasn’t a matter of lost affection, no...Taehyung had just learned to be grateful for the loss in a way, rather than guilt ridden. Jin’s letter said as much, directed him to find something more than the life he had here. To never feel he wasn’t deserving of more because of the cost. It took time, as all things in life did, but he got there. With Jeongguk, Seokjin and the letters to keep him company, he grew to love his eldest brother even more for providing him the chance to be here now.

“I will be by the roses, Tae.” Hoseok leaves him with a touch to his back, Taehyung peering over his shoulder to find the others joining them. They stay a distance from him, giving him space and he is grateful for the chance. It gives him the time to look up at his brother’s likeness, amazed at how Hoseok had commissioned two statues to be done. The once marble gravestone was now adorned by sculptures, the two men gazing over the entire gardens. Impressive to admire, and when Taehyung looks at them, he can’t help but feel a strong stirring of peace in him.

“Who’s that, papa?”

Taehyung feels a small weight run into him, his hand instinctively moving to rest over his son’s head, fingers stroking over the soft tresses. “The statues?”

“Mmhm…”

“You know all those stories I’ve told you about your uncles, Jin and Joon?” Seokjin nods up at him, still peering at the sculptures, amazed by the way they tower over all of them. Taehyung already feels dwarfed against them, he can imagine to a child it’s even more terrifying in a way. “That’s them, little one.”

“They looked like that?”

“They did and they,” Taehyung holds back a sigh, feeling the tears prickle the corners of his eyes but too unwilling to let his son worry any further. “Are the very reason I got to have you in my life, got to have your father. Without them, without their sacrifice...none of us would have been able to live as happily as we do now.”

“If you’re happy why are you crying?”

“They’re happy tears, I promise.” His son holds his hand for a moment, looking skeptical but then he moves away, letting his small palm touch the base of the statues. He appears to hesitate there, staring cautiously at the likeness of his family, but then his lips stretch into that large grin, so like Jeongguk’s as he says, “Thank you, uncles.” The sight alone makes Taehyung hold back a sob, his heart bursting with pride at the scene. It isn’t the miracle of letting Jin meet his nephew, but it’s something. A reprieve in all the guilt he held long ago, and when Seokjin takes his own hand, leading it to the statue as well, he knows in the end it was all so worth it.

“Taehyung, Seokjin!” They hear their names being called, and Jimin is the one to summon them towards the seating in the gardens for lunch, and while Taehyung kisses the top of his son’s head, telling him to head down there, he stays behind for a while longer. His fingertips sweep across the names in the marble, tracing every letter with intent. He’s not sure how much time has passed, but when he hears footsteps approaching, he gets the idea it was longer than he expected.

So, he lets his palm slide off the marble stone, but it doesn’t remain empty for long. He feels the way Jeongguk comes towards his side, the alpha quickly replacing the cold of the statue with his own warm hand, lacing their fingers together before bringing them up to kiss across them. He gives Taehyung a soft look, leaning in to press a kiss to his lips, only moving away when they hear the others beckon for them once more. And Taehyung, he hears them--he does...but he still takes that extra second, lingering by the statues and gazing up at them one more time. “Thank you…” He feels Jeongguk squeeze his hand, not impatient, just supportive in the way he holds it. Just like he’s always been. By his side, unrelenting. “Both of you. For everything.”

Notes:

Thank you. I will start by saying that. Not only to those who have read this story since the beginning (July of last year, wow), or those who found it halfway through..but to those who also come across it at its end and those who chose to wait until it was finished. Thank you, all of you! It means a lot to know my hobby brings joy to you, and that you've looked forward to every update. It was a tedious process of editing this story, and I hope it was satisfying overall. I'm happy to finish it, because now I can focus on new works to edit and that's always exciting. Still, in a way I am sad to let this go, I enjoyed writing Taekook in this, and Jin especially...still so sorry about Namjin... but I hope you enjoyed this story from beginning to end.

As always, thank you and subs, kudos, comments always appreciated.

Stay safe, my dears.
