Amaya's Tale

Chapter Text

Amaya went up to the room she had been using while staying with the Bakugos. She changed out of her uniform into a pair of dark jeans and a red sweater before she repacked her clothes into the duffle bag and made sure her toiletries were all packed safely away in her pocket dimension before coming back downstairs. As she reached the bottom, she was pulled into a hug by Mitsuki. “You be sure to tell us when you get to your fosters house, so we know you got there safe. You hear me?” Amaya nodded and mumbled an affirmative against the woman’s chest before she was released with a hair ruffle and immediately pulled into a quick hug by Masaru. Who assured her that they would be able to see her again soon and that she would see the boys still for training and school. Izuku was next to pull Amaya into a hug the Midoriya tears made an appearance as seemingly endless tears seamed to fall from his eyes. He told her that Inko wished she could be there to see her off but got called into work early and Katsuki had his arms crossed his chest and was glaring. Amaya telepathically told the boy she would miss him and went to walk past him. As she did, he scoffed and pulled her back into a hug. “Thought you could leave without giving me a hug, did you?”
Amaya smirked as she pulled away, “No, I just know you would have grumped more if I were to have been the one to initiate.”
“Why you little!” He reached out to smack her upside the head and just missed as Amaya dropped and stuck out a leg causing him to trip. He growled and darted after her as she left the house dropping her bags on the front porch laughing as she continued to dodge away from her friend to the amusement of the adults and green-haired child. The game finally came to an end when Sato called out to Amaya after checking their watch. Katsuki took Amaya’s distraction as an opportunity to tackle the girl to the grass and pin her belly down in a move that they had been practicing. Amaya grinned and told him to keep practicing as he let her up. Sato came over carrying Amaya’s bags and motioned for Amaya to follow them.

The drive to the Toga house was short, about fifteen minutes from the school and Amaya noted that she would be coming to school from the opposite direction if she wasn’t planning on going on her normal morning run with Izuku and Katsuki. Now that she doesn’t have Ryusei to guide her personal training, she was going to have to work out a new schedule for herself as well as find a way to continue honing the skills they were working on together. Amaya spent the rest of the drive to the Toga residence making a note of all the things she would need to look into and further research so that she didn’t fall behind in her training. As she worked, she kept an ear on what Sato was telling her. Trusting her emotions to tell them what she thought of what they were telling her and keeping any verbal responses short and to the point while not being rude.

Sato spent the drive telling Amaya about the Toga family, as they had worked with them in the past. They were good people with two children. A pair of girls, one was a little over a year older than Amaya at fourteen and a nine-year-old. Sato watched the young girl as she stared out the window, she kept one ear tuned toward them and felt a small spark of interest at the mention of the Toga family children. So, they knew Amaya was listening, but it was obvious that she was thinking hard about something. Sato’s quirk gave them a bit of an advantage when working with kids though. They could feel how nervous she was, her longing for her friends and their parents, as well as the grief and self-blame she was keeping forced down. They would need to keep an eye on that when they came to check on her, as that wasn’t healthy to do in the long term.

When they arrived at the Toga residence Sato took Amaya’s bags from the trunk and Amaya found herself staying close to them as they led the way up the neat lawn and to the front door. The house was two stories with a small front yard, cream colored siding, and a raised flowerbed enclosing the front porch where a small table and chairs were set. Sato rang the doorbell and Amaya started playing with a bit of her hair and fought the urge to hide behind the social worker, she was so nervous. She lost the fight with her nerves and took a step closer to Sato moving just out of sight of the front door a moment before it opened. Sato reached a hand back behind them, Amaya took it with a shaking hand. Sato gave her hand a reassuring squeeze as the door opened to reveal a tall man with black hair and brown eyes. He wore a light blue button-up shirt tucked into a pair of dark colored jeans with a brown belt and grey slippers. He took a moment to take in the scene in front of him. Sato, the bags on their shoulders, and the child peeking around their side canine like ears drooped and tail just barely visible as it moved clearly anxious. “You must be Sato, please come in.” He said gesturing for the pair to come in stepping to the side and opening the door wider as he did.

Sato entered the house thanking the man, as they did. Amaya kept a hold of their hand as she followed. She was grateful when Sato didn’t take their hand back as they both changed into the slippers that were offered to them. Once they were done Sato and Amaya joined the man in the living room. There was a couch across from a wall mounted TV with a loveseat and a recliner around a coffee table with a few magazines, an open coloring book, and a pack of colored pencils on it. The walls were a cream color with photos on one of them most depicting the man with a blond woman and two girls both blonds like their mother. There was a bay window with a seat and two small shelves, each with a houseplant on top and books and nicknacks on the shelves behind the couch. To the right of the TV was a doorway to a hallway leading to the rest of the house. Sato let Amya pick where they sat. She chose to sit on the corner seat of the couch farthest from the doorway where she could see most of the room. Sato sat next to her on the middle cushion and Mr. Toga sat on the loveseat on the side closest to the couch. Once she sat down Amaya finally let go of Sato’s hand, she instead pets her tail where it rested in her lap smoothing out the fur in an attempt to settle her nerves. Sato spoke, “It’s a pleasure to see you again Mr. Toga. Where are your wife and daughters? I thought they would be here as well.”
“Little Miharu had a dentist appointment, so Rika is with her at the moment. As for Himiko, she should be around here somewhere.” Mr. Toga said with an easy smile before addressing Amaya. “Hi there, I’m Toga, Hiroto.”
Amaya looked to Sato, seeing them give a small smile they nodded so Amaya faced Mr. Toga and gave a small, seated bow as she introduced herself. “Nice to meet you Mr. Toga, I’m Shibata, Amaya. Thank you for letting me stay here with you and your family.”
“Go ahead and call me Hiroto, you’re going to be with us for a while so you may as well call us by our given names kiddo.” Hiroto said before looking back to Sato. “Sato, you mentioned some extra precautions that were being taken to ensure her safety. Mind running those by me again?”
Sato pulled a folder out of their satchel that they had by their feet and handed it to Hiroto. “It’s all in here, but to put it simply the police force has increased patrols in the area around her school and home as well as having asked the heroes in the area she tends to frequent to keep an eye on her and her friends as they go out and about.”
“Why just around her school and home?” Hiroto said, looking a bit concerned.
“It’s because aside from home and school the farthest I go normally is to Takoba beach, and that is on my daily runs with my friends before school.” Amaya said barely above a whisper.
Hiroto looked at her, “Really? Well, it says here that since the incident you have been staying with a family friend. I take it they are the friend you are referring to.”
Amaya nodded, “Yeah, one of them at least. My friends and I study and train together, we switch between their homes when we study, and my big brother came up with our training regimen and Auntie Inko said something about a surprise for the three of us that will help.” Amaya stopped realizing she had started to go off topic and had a question of her own for Hiroto. “You aren’t going to stop my friends and I from continuing to train together, are you?”
Hiroto shook his head. “I have no intention of stopping it as long as you and your friends are being safe. Why don’t you tell me what your training routine entails.”
Amaya nodded enthusiastically and explained that she and her two friends generally meet up at one of their homes and start each morning by stretching doing some yoga, which the boys’ parents had started joining them for, and after which they went for a jog to the trash beach and back before school. How after school they meet up at one of their homes depending on what the plans for the day were. Strictly study or bookwork days they would meet at the Midoriya apartment. While they would meet at the Bakugo house to study, spar, or practice with their quirks as they had a decent sized back yard and already had a safe space for their son to be able to practice with his quirk, and on days they met at Amaya’s house they were often spent studying, sparring, or on practicing parkour or other practical skills. She also explained the breakdown of their routine. That they alternated between physical practices and practical skills and that schoolwork or studies came first and were every day, and Sundays were their rest day. Hiroto listened intently and asked where they were practicing their parkour. He looked more than a little concerned when she mentioned that they practiced by running the roofs of the neighborhood. “Yes, we take precautions. I have permission from the heroes who patrol in the area to use my quirk to prevent injury as we do and my brother and I have been doing parkour since I was nine years old, so it isn’t like we decided to do this without any experience. With that he looked a bit more relaxed.

Once that was settled Sato and Hiroto went back to discussing the safety precautions that were in place or going to be in place to keep an eye out for the people who kidnapped her. As well as explaining that with Amaya’s situation both Hiroto and Sato were to be on her emergency contact list for school. After about fifteen minutes more Sato was leaving telling Amaya that they would be back to see how she was settling in a week.
“Amaya, let’s get you settled into your room before Rika and Miharu get back.” Hiroto said picking up Amaya’s duffle full of clothes and leading her through the house pointing out the different rooms as he did. Amaya hugged her bookbag to her chest as she followed. “So, across the hall here is the kitchen. We generally eat breakfast and supper together and lunch is generally prepped the night before and left in the fridge for you kids to grab when you’re hungry on days you don’t have school. Otherwise, we’ll give you money for lunch at school. Down the hall by the stairs here is the laundry room on the left and the powder room on the right.” He looked back at Amaya to ensure she was listening and she made sure to keep at least one ear perked in his direction as she looked around the space taking mental notes on the layout of the house. She also noticed that there were a few cameras, at least one in every room in the main living spaces. They continued the tour up the stairs. “First door on the left is my room, if you need myself or Rika at night just knock. Second door on the left is Miharu’s room and past that is the door to my office. Please keep out of there.” Amaya nodded her understanding. “Good. First door on the right is your room, past it is the bathroom you girls share, and past that is the guest room.” He opened the door to her room and gestured for her to go ahead in setting down her duffle just inside the room as he did. “I’ll leave you to get settled. Then supper is at 19:00 and breakfast is at 6:00.” He turned to leave and stopped facing Amaya once more. “Oh, I nearly forgot. We really have two major rules. One, eat at least one meal with the rest of the household, and two stay out of the basement without supervision. I have a home gym set up down there and I don’t want you down there without an adult to make sure you are safe. If you want, I can take you down there tonight. My wife and I generally work out together after putting Miharu to bed, it won’t be any trouble for you to join us.”
Amaya gave a small smile, “That would be cool. Thank you.”
Hiroto nodded and left the room shutting the door behind him, leaving Amaya alone to settle in.
