Chapter Text
It didn’t come as too much of a surprise when, two months later, Olivia found herself staring at a positive pregnancy test.
Part of her was tempted to call Elliot right now and tell him the news. Or, better yet, make him rush over to her place so she could tell him to his face and watch him cycle through all the same emotions she was feeling now: disbelief, fear, happiness, anxiety.
She held off on calling him though.
Despite her recent suspicions of being pregnant, she hadn’t started taking any prenatal vitamins, she hadn’t changed her diet or backed off on caffeine, hadn’t been sleeping when her body begged for it because of the job’s demands. She needed to make sure this baby was okay before she broke the news. She had to make sure her poor eating and self care habits hadn’t caused the baby any kind of harm.
So, she made an appointment that evening and, for two agonizing weeks, kept the news of the pregnancy to herself.
She finally let out the breath she’d been holding those entire two weeks when the image of the baby appeared on the ultrasound screen, its strong, healthy heartbeat echoing off the room’s walls. With a tearful grin, she stared in awe at the tiny life inside her womb while the ultrasound technician told her how good the baby looked and took a few pictures for her to take home with her.
——————-
She finally decided to tell Elliot two days later.
It was just the two of them in the precinct again, knee deep in a case that felt like it was getting colder by the minute. Neither of them were willing to give up just yet though, jumping down a rabbit hole of suspects’ pasts all because of a random hunch.
When Olivia read the same paragraph three times and still couldn’t recall what it said, she figured it was time for a break and pulled Elliot up to the lockers with her, knowing just what to do to clear their heads.
“What is this?” Elliot asked, visibly confused when he opened his locker to find a tiny baseball cap sitting on the shelf. It was the same shade of the dark blue cap he’d been wearing the last time they had the precinct to themselves a couple of months ago.
“Turn it over,” Olivia replied when he picked it up and held it like it was precious, like he’d break it if he breathed too hard.
Slowly, Elliot turned the cap so he could look inside. His eyebrows twitched upwards at the sight of the sonogram securely taped inside. It wasn’t until he saw her name in the upper left corner a few seconds later that his eyes widened and he looked over at her, her big brown eyes staring at him with too many emotions for him to make individually.
“Seriously?” He asked quietly.
Olivia nodded. “I’m pregnant, El,” she whispered.
Those three life changing words sounded so loud in the quiet precinct, in the very place where this little baby was conceived.
Elliot let out a breathless laugh and pulled her against his chest, his strong arms wrapping her in an embrace that was simultaneously tight yet gentle. She hugged him back, resting her temple against his before she buried her face into his shoulder.
“How long have you known?”
“A couple weeks,” she admitted when she pulled away, her hands lingering by his ribs while his lingered by her waist. “My eating and sleeping habits haven’t been great. I wanted to make sure he was okay before I told you.”
“He?” Elliot smiled.
“I did the blood test and the technician looked during the scan. She’s pretty confident it’s a boy.”
“I can’t believe it,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “We’re having a baby.”
His hands moved from her waist to her belly, his gaze finally following suit. He slowly slid his hands beneath her shirt, warm hands touching warm skin and he let himself fall to his knees. Olivia laid her hands on his shoulders as he pushed her shirt up just high enough so he could kiss her belly once, twice, three times, each soft smooch so affectionate Olivia swore the love seeped into her skin and shot straight up into her heart.
“Hi little buddy,” Elliot whispered. “It’s your daddy.”
He turned his head so his ear was pressed against her stomach, a position he had adopted more than a few times since they started dating a couple months ago. His heart swelled at the knowledge that she’d been carrying a little bit of both of them inside her at the time. He wondered if he had AU consciously known all along and wanted to be as close as possible to the baby.
“I love you little man,” he murmured, his voice so soft and rumbly that even with the precinct being quiet Olivia almost missed it.
“He loves you too,” Olivia smiled. She ran her hands over his shoulders to cup his neck on either side, her thumbs stroking the delicate skin there.
“Come here,” she said suddenly, urging him to his feet with a light squeeze of his neck.
He barely had a chance to get to his feet before she pressed her lips to his, the force of it causing him to bump against the closed locker beside his. Smooches turned into slow, tongue filled kisses where hands began to roam, resting on hips, waists, and ribs before Olivia ultimately wrapped her arms around his neck and his rested heavy on her ribs. When her breathing gradually became more labor beneath his touch, he pulled away and rested his brow against hers, his eyes closed.
“Let me buy you dinner,” he said when he finally had enough breath to speak. “We can head back to your place or mine, and I’ll take care of you.”
“Okay,” she smiled. “I like the sound of that.” She sealed her response with a final smooch before pulling away so he could close up his locker.
It only took them a minute to put away the most important papers in their search for new leads. She grabbed her purse from its hiding place in the bottom drawer of her desk and bumped hips with Elliot as they walked side by side out of the squad room, Elliot placing that tiny baseball cap on Olivia’s head as they rounded the corner.
