Chapter Text
CONTEXT ON WHAT LINK ROT IS IN REAL LIFE;
Link Rot is a real phenomena on the internet where links on websites will stop working. As the internet adapts and changes and grows into new filetypes, outdated websites will be broken down because the internet has stopped supporting the websites they linked to, let alone the websites themselves. This is why links often have to be updated on websites, to prevent this from happening. It's not necessarily damaging (other than the prospect of lost media), but just annoying mostly.
LINK ROT IN MY INSANE HEADCANONS:
okay now with that out of the way To Biografts link rot is a type of computer "virus" that can effect biografts when their code/systems havent been updated in a while. the reason of why it's so feared is because, as the name implies, link rot can start infecting and rotting away other parts of the biografts code. what it attacks is normally random, but often times it happens to attack their defense systems and, namely, The code subspace put in place to keep biografts from becoming sentient.
link rot IS contagious and it mostly spreads through biografts sending signals to one another (whether that be for assigned tasks or alerting eachother). biografts arent necessarily insentient, they have a vague level of consciousness, but thats mostly because the more time a biograft spends around a living demon, the more sentient it becomes. the reason THAT happens is because demons naturally have magic and that fucks with their systems a little. normally it's nothing Big but randomly a biograft might turn to you and ask you like whats your favorite color or something
speaking of how demons' magic can mess with a biograft's system, being around live demons actually Speeds Up the rotting process of link rot; essentially infecting the biograft's code and making them become sentient even faster.
there's no real "cure" to link rot because as blackrock's technology gets better faster it gets faster batter, basically grows exponentially, meaning that technology goes out of date VERY quickly. so there's no stopping it but it can be prevented by just actively keeping biografts' code and systems up to date.
