The Boyfriend of the Man

Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Summary:

Yeah sorry this chapter is kinda short, it’s like 12:30 am and I really wanted to write but didn’t really have the energy to try too hard. Hope this is an ok chapter 2, lmao

Chapter Text

Tommy’s eyes widened. Some guy in a black cloak was standing still beside him, hunched over a little. Noticing the eyes on him, the figure's head looked upwards, revealing a young face with widening eyes and clear struggle to hide a hint of panic.

Tommy suppressed a shriek, as his sudden movement caught him off guard quite a bit. The stranger quickly regained composure, and as if on cue Tommy interrogated:

“Who are you ?”

The boy hesitated a little, but eventually his face evolved into a defeated look. He looked back at Tommy with a cold, hard gaze very unlike his attitude a second prior.

I am Wlvin Eang, descendant of Thanatos, and I have come to… harvest your soul,”

“Harvest my soul ? I’m not dead, idiot,”

Tommy teased. Wlvin glared and returned to his hunched position.

“I noticed,”

He mumbled arrogantly.

“So what are you doing here?”

Wlvin only shrunk farther away, clearly embarrassed.

“There was a little… mishap…”

Tommy just cocked his head, looking at Wlvin expectantly. But Wlvin wouldn’t say another word.

Too confused and head still full of clouds, Tommy gave up. This is stupid. He turned and hopped off the bed, heaving his backpack on his right shoulder. Wlvin didn’t move, only hunched over and seemed to do his best to hide behind his black, ominous cloak. Tommy peeked out of the curtain before fully shoving it aside, stepping into the full Nurse’s office.

“Well, whatever you’re doing here, have fun. The bell is gonna ring any minute and I gotta be on the bus with Ava-”

He felt a cold hand on his shoulder.

“I’m coming with you, then,”

Wlvin said, tension and authority in his voice. It was telling that Tommy could not get this guy to leave him alone so easily, and he didn’t have the energy to try in the first place. So he just hauled the other strap of his backpack onto his left shoulder and sighed. He checked his phone and the numbers on the lock screen shifted to 3:14. After an expectant moment, the school bell dinged and Tommy strode fast- paced out of the office, ignoring the slight disorientation and throbbing of his head, up the stairs towards the main entrance to DHS.

Acknowledging the firm “stay behind me” the kid’s body language screamed, Wlvin slowly and shamefully followed behind him.

How could he be so stupid? How did he just portal to a living person? What made him think he could do this himself?

All Wlvin could do was wallow in his shame and embarrassment. If his father were watching right now, he would be oh so very ashamed to have a son like him. A failure.

Noticing how far ahead the boy was, Wlvin felt the need to pick up the pace. He glided right through the door that the kid stormed through, who did not make an effort to hold it for him. Wlvin watched as he climbed the stairs of a yellow bus, watched as he acknowledged the bus driver and found an empty seat. Wlvin followed suit, sitting directly next to him who opened his phone and began tapping fiercely at it. Putting it down and turning to face the window, it was almost on cue that a girl in a maroon jacket and cargo pants made her way through the aisle and plopped down in the empty seat across from them.

“Tommy– psst, hey!”

She whispered, rather audibly.

Tommy turned to face her, leaning forward to he could see past Wlvin. He stood and awkwardly shuffled past him to he could sit next to the girl. They huddled in a little bit and began to whisper to each other profusely.

Wlvin watched for a moment, unable to remember a time he had someone his own age to talk with that wasn’t a bodyguard or his father, or a prisoner. He wondered what it must be like, to have a companion like that. Noticing the sudden longing he felt, Wlvin did his best to push this feeling to the side and remember what situation he was currently in. He had to find a way to get out of this; this kid– Tommy– wasn’t going to tolerate him forever and Wlvin didn’t think he could tolerate himself here much longer.

However, just as he was going to use this time to contemplate his next move, he heard someone calling his name.

“Wlvin? Hey, do you exist? Or is Tommy going insane?”

Wlvin turned to the voice, realizing it was, in fact, the girl, looking expectantly in his general direction. Tommy stared at him with an urgent, “do something” look, and that’s when Wlvin remembered: he was not visible to any of these people. Besides Tommy of course. He must have told this person about his presence, why else would she be calling his name with that mocking tone full of disbelief?

This must be embarrassing for the kid, maybe Wlvin should do something to prove he actually did exist. Wlvin caught himself reaching for Tommy’s backpack, intending to lift it. Something he was taught from a very early age: if he screws up, if he does get stuck in the realm of the living, letting people know of his existence could be extremely dangerous for his kind. With this, he dropped his arms and looked back at Tommy, at a loss.

He is doing what is best, his father will come looking for him eventually.

Despite how much he reassured himself this would be over before he knew it, the frustrated and defeated look on Tommy’s face as he turned back to his now laughing companion spoke volumes, and mirrored exactly how Wlvin truly felt in that moment.

FANART IS WELCOME!

Notes:

Psychopomp: (in Greek mythology) a guide of souls to the place of the dead.
the spiritual guide of a living person's soul.
"a psychopomp figure who stays by her and walks in her dreams"

Thanatos is the Grim Reaper’s full name, look it up. Weird stuff I researched for this; don’t look through my search history.

FANART IS VERY VERY MUCH WELCOME!
