It may have seemed a bit quiet in Archive terms for a while, but that is because our designers, coders and testers have been beavering away behind the scenes on some big projects. We're happy to report that the HUGE amount of new code produced over the past few months has now been deployed to the Archive - we're very excited about the new features being introduced, and we think that you will be too!

Highlights

There are lots and lots of new things in this deploy: check out the Release Notes for release 0.7.3 to see a full list. Here are a few highlights:

New front end

One reason we have not deployed new code for a while is that we've been undergoing a site-wide review of our front end code. Our fantastic front-end coder lim has reviewed everything for validity and accessibility, while the lovely Ira remodelled our 'post new' form. You'll notice lots of small changes everywhere, highlights include:

  • The 'works blurb' (the description you see when you browse a list of works) - we've streamlined it and removed the labels so it's easier to see lots of information at once. We'd love feedback on the new design!
  • The 'post new' form: We've made it possible to select more than one category, changed the way you select warnings, and generally made things simpler.

We welcome your feedback on the new design, but we ask that for the first week, you focus on telling us if you have found any bugs! This will make it easier for our wonderful Support team to work through your feedback and pass it to coders. We'll collate more general feedback separately and use it to tweak the design (remember that we are also planning skins to customise the look of the Archive, so there will be more options in the future).

Metatags

For those of you who have been frustrated that our tag interface didn't give quite the control you might like over RPF fandoms and fandoms with a shared universe / in different media, etc, we have good news! A massive amount of work on the part of our AMAZING coder Elz has gone into changing the way tags work behind the scenes to include metatags, which will help us deal with these problems. For more information, check out Metatags: a user perspective. The changes in tags won't be immediate - our wranglers will need time to finish overhauling their policies and make the changes - but our mighty team regularly moves mountains, so you should see improvements pretty quickly.

Collection and challenges - gift exchanges!

This release sees the next set of code for challenges. It's now possible to have people sign up for your gift exchange challenge and give their prompts on the Archive itself. More amazing feats of coding from Naomi, who has been working with the mods of the multifandom challenge Remix Redux to develop the new functionality, and there are even more features still to come.

Please note: We have not yet written the code which will match up challenge participants and send out their assignments, so if you want to run a challenge on the new code, bear in mind you will have to wait a few weeks for us to roll out the other half of the functionality!

User rename

After many, many support requests forlornly informing us of usernames that wound up being not quite as you wanted them, we have implemented a rename option. Please note that changing your username will break links which included your old username! For more information check out our tutorial on editing your username.

User icons (eventually right now!)

User icons YAY! Another treat from the lovely Elz. Check out our tutorial on user icons for all the details on how to upload! We're especially excited about this because icons are our first chance to see how hosting fanart might work on the Archive (watch this space for more on this very soon).

Major performance upgrade

This one hopefully should be invisible, but awesome new coder Ronan has completely rewritten our back-end HTML formatter so that it is about twice as fast! If you notice stories not displaying as they used to, please let us know.

This is just a small selection of all the amazing work that appears in this deploy - don't forget to check out the Release Notes for release 0.7.3 for the full list.

Yeay team \0/

Thirteen different coders contributed to this code, including new members amc, Ronan and Ira. \0/ It also represents the hard work of many, many other people: our support team passed on your feedback to our designers, our designers worked hard to improve things based on your feedback, our coders implemented the design, and our testers moved mountains in order to get everything checked out so that we could be sure that everything was in working order. Now the new code is in place, the whole process starts again, with our tag wranglers and support team handling things on the front line and everyone else working to build the next release. We're incredibly grateful for and proud of the energy and dedication that goes into this project.

Get involved!

If you'd like to be part of all this activity, there are lots of ways you can be involved!

  • New initiative! We would love your help in verifying that all the new code on the Archive really is doing its job – if you'd like to browse the Archive for fun and (karmic) profit please check out our post on verifying Archive code.
  • Give us your feedback via the Archive support and feedback form. If you spot a bug, let us know! If you have a request for a new feature or an enhancement, we also want to hear from you! We also enjoy and appreciate praise *g*. The fabulous Archive Support team answer all feedback, but bear in mind that new code and the the arrival of two more big challenges may mean they are slower than usual at getting back to you.
  • If you'd like to be even more directly involved, then volunteer. We always need more coders, testers, tag wranglers, designers, and support team members (especially support!). We aim to be a warm, welcoming and diverse community.
  • On the heels of our recent membership drive, we'd also like to remind you that we appreciate your financial support! In order for us to keep growing and provide a long-term, stable home for fandom, we need money to pay for our servers! If you can, please do donate to the OTW - now with even more shiny thank-you gifts! Every little bit helps.

Remember, if you like something, hate something, or love what we have but want even more shiny things, we want to know! The Archive of Our Own is for all fans and we want to cater for fandom in all its delicious diversity.

Welcome to Revision 2364, up from 2101. This includes a huge number of changes with some exciting new features, a lot of background improvements and bug fixes.

We welcome Ronan, Ira and amc who have their first code for the AO3 in this release. We're pleased to note that 13 of our fabulous coders contributed to bringing you these changes - that's a large, active team and one we're very proud of.

Our next deploy will be within the next two weeks and will contain the Assignments code for Challenges.

Highlights

Lots of exciting stuff: code for running challenges, tag wrangling tools, better navigation and filtering for collections, navigation for news posts, improvements to category tags, improvements to series listings, easier way to edit tags on a work, and more.

  • CSS / Accessibility / Page Structure review - this will be visible in subtle ways on almost every page. A huge amount of work has gone into this and we are very grateful to lim who has shared her expertise and time to make this possible. The new site should be much more accessible for a wide range of users.
  • New HTML formatter / parser
    • This is what strips out non-allowed HTML and tidies up unclosed tags and so on. We get significant performance improvements with this change, which is very attractive - however, this update may cause some changes to the way a small number of works display. Please be patient and tell us about any problems you run into (via the Support form) and we'll polish this over time.
  • Metatags have arrived!
  • Username editing - you can now edit your username
    • Please be aware that we are not redirecting your old URLs, so if you do this, you may break offsite links (although links to individual works you have posted will not be affected, as those URLs do not contain your username).
  • One icon per pseud is now supported - Tutorial: uploading a user icon
  • Challenges - the code for sign-ups is in and available for use
    • This is a two-part piece of code; while you can now sign up for a Challenge you also need the Assignments code (coming in the next drop)
  • The default for viewing works has been changed from 'View Entire Work' to 'View Chapter By Chapter'. If you prefer to view the entire work by default, you can still set this from your Preferences page!

Known Issues

See Known Issues page.

Next Projects

We'll shortly be deploying the second half of the gift exchange code for challenges - the part that will do the matching and assigning.

We're planning some tweaks to search in the next deploy, and longer term a bigger redesign.

We're planning a new support interface on the Archive, which will make our poor overworked support team very happy!

Welcome to Release 0.7.2. Revision 1957, up from 1789. This is the big Yuletide release and very likely our last significant release of 2009!

A special thank you to our testers for checking over a vast number of changes in a very, very limited amount of time. They did a ton of work to help get the collections code finished and make this year's Yuletide possible. <3

Highlights

  • Collections and Challenges! This is the big new shiny toy, and it will be getting quite a workout with the Yuletide challenge in the coming week! For more information, check out the Collections section of our FAQ (more info coming soon!).
  • Warnings have been revised a bit based on user feedback and cross-committee discussion. For a detailed explanation of the changes, please see our latest post on warnings.
  • The fandoms pages are currently undergoing a redesign. What you'll see now is a very basic version, but it should load quite a bit faster than what we had previously, and the work counts should be more accurate. You'll also be able to browse collections by fandom - it's also very basic, but we wanted to get it in there!
  • Finally, we made some changes to tags that we're very excited about, allowing them to be longer and contain a wider variety of letters from different languages, and we've done a lot of work to improve the accessibility and cross-browser compatibility of various pages on the site, which is something we'll continue working on in the new year.

Known Issues

Please see our Known Issues page.

Next projects

First, we make sure everything goes well with the Yuletide challenge. Then, we take a nap. Then, we start attacking our list of projects for 2010. \o/

Release details

Bugs Fixed

  • The header and main navigation should now at least be visible and functional in IE 6. It's not a browser we plan to support fully, but we hope to make things somewhat usable for people who are stuck with it.
  • In IE 7: multiple improvements to the homepage, the links to comment on or bookmark a work, the edit profile page, the comment form, tag links, and the new user page.
  • Other front-end fixes to the homepage, the profile page, the edit work page, the page to edit multiple works, user pages, the support form, the reading history page, and, of course, the collections pages. (Go, go, front-end coders!)
  • The character limit on tags has been raised to 100, making it much easier to (among other things) list threesome pairings.
  • Tags can now contain a much wider variety of characters, including international unicode characters: letters with accents and umlauts, non-Western alphabets, etc.
  • Fixed the very annoying bug with filters not accurately reflecting edits made to a work's tags, which caused works to show up in the wrong places when browsing. (Note: once we're sure this is fixed going forward, we'll be able to shuffle all your works back to where they belong, but that will happen in the next release.)
  • When you post a new work with an invalid tag, the valid tags should still be there when the form reloads.
  • When you go to the languages page, you should no longer be able to get all works in English at once.
  • You should never get more than 1,000 works at once, on the main works page or on any other page. The upside is that the pages won't take an age and a half to load anymore.
  • When you post a work with a pairing and an unofficial/non-canonical name for one of the characters in that pairing, they should now be collapsed the way other cast tags are if the wranglers have set up the relationships behind the scenes.
  • Bookmarks on user and pseud pages should be listed in the order in which they were created, not the order in which they were edited.
  • The links to mark comments on your works as spam/not spam should be working properly now.
  • The admin backend is now about a thousand times less hideously ugly than it was before. (Poor admins.)

Other New Features

  • Added a hit counter! If you go to your preferences, you'll see that you can control both whether other people can see hit counters on your works and whether you can see them on your works when you're logged in.
  • Added a link to our Known Issues page in the footer of each page.
  • Added special stylesheets for Internet Explorer, which should be a big help going forward.

Welcome to Release 0.7.1.2. Revision 1789, up from 1762. This is a fairly small release, with a few bugfixes and the first round of code for Collections and Challenges \0/

Highlights

Collections and Challenges! This release includes the first set of code which will be needed for Collections. Most of the changes are not visible ones: we've put in some of the behind-the-scenes code which will be necessary for importing from other Archives (we'll be using this to rescue stories of Yuletide past from the decaying Yuletide site, all being well).

Known Issues

Please see our Known Issues page.

Next projects

We're focusing on Collections and Challenges from now up until Christmas, in order to be sure that everything is tickety-boo for Yuletide. We're also looking to make some improvements to how the site displays in IE7.

New things
